The only two ways to sim unlock or phone is through xtc clip and paid unlock code.

XTC clip cannot root, XTC clip makes your phone S-OFF, you can after that downgrade the phone and root it!
check this example in the Wildfire forum:

Hello raskal, please tell me what should i do to make fastboot flash command working.
I unlocked my desire by XTC, security is off CID is Supercid, but fastboot flash is not working. i cant flash recovery.
Itried to do this by putting PB99IMG.zip on sd, and flash over recovery, and fastboot flash recovery ....... and both of the doesn`t work.
I can also confirm it works, i have had mine done and very chuffed!
A CoreDroidMoD rom is on its way
P.S
You can root it with GingerBreak after S-OFF
is there any other way to make it S-Off apart from the Xtc clip? or is there anywhere you can get it done, instead of buying a Xtc clip?
Xtc it's the only way currently, people Are working on a software method....
Some people offer a mail order xtc service, where you send your phoner to them, they s-off it and then post your phone back, should be about quarter th the pricE of buyinG xtc online
you'll need to find an unlocking shop that does this in your country

Some questions about the clip itself:
Are there more types of clips? if you buy one will it certainly give you s-off ?
If you buy one, will it work for future model phones (then it might be worth the money)
If you buy one and get s-off, is there allready the certainty of getting root?
Thanks

Only 1 type of clip - Although a payg clip is in testing elsewhere on forum.
It will certainly give you s-off.
noone can accuratly say whether it will work on future models.
Yes you will certainly have root after s-off

As ben_pyett already said it's the only way right now - unfortunately as I see it they (HTC) do the same with all the new ones coming out...
If I'll have time - something I'm always lack of - I'll make up a proper rooting guide with pictures.
In the meantime if somebody needs S-OFF just send me a PM.
BTW see you soon Ben

Hi thanks for reply i bought xtc clip from ebay seller fonefunshop but they have there own site aswell.
Ive got generic htc rom on no help.

I do not think the xtc clip does a sim unlock. Debranded ROMs have nothing to do with carrier locks I'm afraid.
XTC clip usually fully unlock the phone, including simlock.
For those wanting to have a look on the PAYG clip, check here : fonefunshop.co.uk/cable_picker/96007_XTC_Clip_PAYG_(Pay_As_You_Go_-_Red_XTC_Clip).html

I saw their website, and seems that they are selling Payg without debranding option and you need to pay extra fee to get that.
that's what I understand from website
contact them to be sure
Hi what you do is unlock using the xtc clip and then on the goldcard created u put a generic htc image that u can extract from exe of this forum and then enter bootloader again with card in and the bootloader will then initiate the "upgrade" to generic software for you.
If u not sure theres a guide in the desire s forums.
Ive done it this way and im running generic software

Hey guys i just got a new htc desire s locked to vodafone uk. Is there any simlock utility to unlock it. Something other than buying an unlock code. I m pretty used to doin soff eng boot etc with desire hd so if anything like that is also involved even then its fine.
Thanks alot huys

I think if you give Vodafone a ring they'll provide an unlock code, no?
Sent from my HTC Desire S
There is no software option for this (atm)... Look for somebody with an XTC Clip nearby! This will remove Simlock and S-Off your device...
There's a list of XTC Clip owners around in the forum, but I can't find it right now, sorry!

My question - any solution for rooting and S-OFF for my Desire? I tray everething (UnlockRoot, SuperOneClick...), but no results Please help...
i think you must be s-off with revolutionary before root
to use revolutionary, you'll have to downgrade your hboot.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318919
But I think you can get around that by using the HTC Dev website to s-off. I've never used HTC dev before so maybe someone else can shed some light on that

Is it possible to get S-OFF without downgrading my HBOOT?
Yes as I mentioned before with htcdev but I'm not sure on how it works. Maybe someone else can help with that
Sent from my Desire S using xda premium
I used manuals from HTC DEV site to unlock bootloader. After successful unlocking I used this instructions
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390496
Now, I have rooted my Desire S!!! But... ALL THINGS from my phone is deleted
My HBOOT is still 2.00.0002
Any solution to change S-ON to S-OFF?
I don't think its necessary to have s-off but when you flash a rom, you'll have to flash the boot.img as well.
I'm not sure why you lost everything though

Htcdev can unlock your bootloader but it won't s off.
To s off you'd need to downgrade hboot n use revolutionary.
Read up on the forum your question has been answered many many times

sadsac is correct, htcdev can only unlock your bootloader, nothing more. But you will need for other steps to get mobile s-off and root.
In my case, I also had got HBOOT 2.00.0002 and revolutionary do not like it, so i had to downgrade:
