[Q] Unlock Tool doesn't unlock repaired tf700 - Asus Transformer TF700

Hi all,
I sent my Infinity in a couple of weeks ago and after a whole lot of waiting I finally got my hands on it again today!
Sadly, as we all know, you get it back with a locked bootloader.
Usually that's not an issue but the Unlock Tool doesn't work for me.
I tried it a couple of times but no luck so far.
Do I have to revert to ICS to make this work or anything?
Or is there another trick/workaround to solve this issue?
Any help (*ANY* help) would be appreciated
Thanks

Really just a guess ... but I think I have read something in other threads about MAC address and mainboard serial number not matching any more once the board has been exchanged. As far as I know, the unlock process contacts the Asus servers and does some kind of checking. I have read from others that had success in contacting Asus support and have them match all the items again.
Please take this with all care, just guessing here ... but maybe you can carry on your search in this direction.

This ^^ sounds about right -- I'm sorry, adelancker, but you're the latest in a loooooong line of TF700 owners who got their repaired device with a permlocked bootloader. (And to add insult to injury: I've never heard of anyone getting into contact with ASUS and resolving it -- although one guy tried three times over, and then reported he had contacts within ASUS now that could help resolve the issue. He was selling that unlock ability, but you had to pay a pretty amount in advance... Nice scheme, huh? ) Actually, I've heard of only three XDA-ers having it returned to them with the ability to unlock retained.
Man, this sucks. I really do feel sorry for you!

If this is true, this takes a whole lot of the joy of getting it back away!
Hopefully I will be able to convince them to set things straight.
I'll keep you posted, but I fear the outcome...
Any trick you know of that'll speed my infinity up, without going to custom roms?
I guess rooting should still be succesful? And then what? Install systemtuner, fstrim, browser2ram and see if that's enough?
Doesn't seem like I have an option here

Yes, rooting should still work -- I haven't really looked into the downgrade path options and if it requires a custom recovery, though. I'd root it if possible, and then tweak the hell out of it.
I fear as you do, but you might drop ASUS a line anyway -- you've got next to nothing to lose. Take care, and good luck!

I can post up a few build.prop tweaks but without a custom kernel you may still suffer.
Best thing you can do is update to 10.4.4.25 and disable all the asus bloat for now.

What has been said about the MAC address is correct. The success rate of people shipping their tablets into RMA to fix the MAC address issue does not seem very high. People are reporting they get the tablet back with the same issue regarding the unlock tool and unable to get the device tracker or OTA updates to work.
Email Asus support and flat out ask them to check the servers in Taiwan and find out if the MAC address listed in your tablet is the same one on the servers. They have the serial number already will just need you to supply the MAC address. If it comes back saying it is not and you need to RMA it, good luck. Question then becomes did the person responding to the email really check or just saying to RMA it so they can close out your email ticket.
The response I got last week was my tablet not matching what they have on the server and send it in. I'm debating if it's worth spending 15-20 bucks to mail it in, wait 2-3wks, only to get it back with them saying there is nothing wrong with the tablet and still be unable to unlock. That seems to be general outcome. In the email I explained I'm unable to use device tracker, receive OTA updates, or use the unlock tool. I explained the issues with MAC addresses for devices being incorrect on the servers in Taiwan as a known issue causing these problems. I supplied my MAC address that the tablet gives and asked to have them verify what they have.
Sorry to say but only Asus can fix this problem. If you search the forums for this topic you will find threads on it. Some had mentioned trying it with the sd card removed has worked. Give that a try. If you disabled the two tracking programs Asus has in their stock build, turn them back on when you try to unlock. Just keep trying a few times randomly and you might get lucky.
If I ever get my issue resolved I will for sure post in the forums for others.

We had already a thread for this, albeit for new devices:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2146543
Mine works now.

The only success I have read about is 2-3 people asking Support to contact Taiwan / transfer the ticket to Taiwan as they seem to be able to correct the MAC in the systems.
After a week or so they fixed the MAC in their systems and the unlocking works again.
I have requested ASUS Germany to contact Taiwan 1,5 week ago but no luck yet. Still hoping they can work things out and I will keep on pushing.

Wary of you doing the build.prop cos if you cause a boot loop you can't restore form recovery. You could reflash the full asus update though right? You comfortable with that?
Also don't forget to force gpu in developer settings.

Be careful here - the problem is not always the MAC-address.
For my TF700, Asus had the correct MAC-address stored, but OTAs, Device Tracker and unlocking did not work nevertheless.
From my Logcat entries I saw that the server refused to 'talk' to my tablet, so I assume that the Asus server in Taiwan just didn't know my tablet.
The issue is fixed now BTW, Asus Germany forwarded the ticket to Taiwan.
So if you talk to Asus support, do not insist that the problem is the MAC-address - if your MAC address is correct and you still insist that it is wrong the Asus support won't take you serious anymore.

Already did! Checked force gpu, disabled all animations, etc.
Just doesn't match up to what did with CRomI
I'll first need to get root, but my tablet isn't recognising the EP201_768_SDUPDATE.zip as an update, I am afraid.
And without that, I can't even get root lol
By the way: I sent a mail to Asus, and they told me to send it in to get the unlock bootloader issue fixed.
Why on earth would they need me to send it in (once again!)?

Hahaha ^^
They haven't charged me yet!
Maybe because I was super mega angry in my mail and mentioned the EU-consumer law a million times.

doesn't unlock and presumably void your warranty? I'm surprised they even let you send it in? Or are all of these instances non warranty repairs?

What can I say? I am a good negotiator I guess...
Just kidding. If you're European, you can always use this EU consumer protection law, which always has your back for the first 6 months after purchase.

Well I'm just asking because I just got my tablet yesterday and am still deciding whether or not to unlock it.
It seems like asus is pretty nice about repairing unlocked devices though.
And no, I'm in the USA

If you're from the US, I can only recommend you to buy a third party warranty such as the Square Trade one.
After that, you can do whatever you want and you'll never have to worry about losing warranty after unlocking your tf700 ever again.
As a side note, unlock your device as soon as you have time! It makes your device that much quicker.
Just sucks that Asus somehow prevents me from unlocking it after the RMA.

how long does it take for 3.1 update to be pushed to device?

I purchased a Transformer yesterday which will be my second one. I returned the first one. Wondering why I have not received the 3.1 update on new device. The first one updated over night. Anyone have any idea what the time frame is for the 3.1 update? I have a full battery and great wifi signal. I have checked in about phone for updates many many times. I have done a search and nothing seemed to come up regarding this. Any and all help is appreciated.
I received mine today... connected to my wifi... 5min later it updated.

I must admit and also agree i cannot understand why people cant just download the update from the asus website.
I think it is an issue though maybe with the lack of a decent manual,if it was mentioned when you opened the box up that firmware can be manually updated from the site we wouldnt hae to view the same posts all day.
Also it may mean we have a lot of new users which means they are selling the transformer like hot cakes.

Because the serial number on my TF is invalid. When I checked in to register the device it kept coming back "invalid serial number" I contacted Asus and was told to take the device back for exchange or refund as they have an internal investigation as to why units were being produced but not entered into data base and they have no time frame for resolution. Seems it is spread throughout the globe, look in this forum and you will see it is an issue for numerous devices. No valid serial number means NO warranty down the line. So what good would it do to manually update when you have no warranty??? Also why should an individual settle for a $400.00 device not functioning as it should out of the box??Yes not having a valid serial number and no warranty and no update are unacceptable. Please excuse me for asking a question on this forum. I got a refund as they had no Transformers on hand for exchange. I now have decided not to purchase until they get this serial number issue sorted out,(if they ever do)or perhaps looking into the Toshiba Thrive.
You should return it if you have a invalid serial number, your going to have warrenty issues if you ever need to send it back for repair

Yes Exactly what I did. I checked the display ASus in Office Depot where I purchased the device and it has not been updated either and has full wifi signal and plugged into power supply and I did a manual check and it came back no update available.. I wonder if it has the invalid serial number issue as well. I would really like to know how wide spread this "invalid serial number" is.
well i had to manually update mine. because it never got the update. but when i registered it, it registered fine.

Worry do not. No one can, its not asus issue but also acer and motorola (and maybe more honeycomb tablets manufacturer).

Iconia users (me) suffer from delayed updates and then they're pushed 1 or 2 days (by states or regions) then pulled away, so, some are stock, some updated and some have 3.1... wich I think is worse.

[Q] What's the deal really? (Unlocking Bootloader)

Can anyone definitively explain the reason why some can and some can not unlock their bootloader? I've searched all over the forums and see reasons the span from left to right. I typically just lurk in the background and figure out methods to install custom ROMS on my own, but this unlocking situation is starting to chap my my arse. I've been trying for about two weeks to use the ASUS tool, but it ain't working for me.....I keep getting the same connection message that other's are getting.
Anybody got a good answer or an even better solution?
From what I've read it seems to be because of their method to track who unlocks. It takes your serial number and then they know so they can void the warranty. However a certain amount of numbers also got put on that list. So when you go to use it it doesn't work because it's only a one time deal to prevent from relocking /unlocking. I'm not 100% sure on this because there isn't really any information available but that's what I've heard from a bit of looking around.

Yeah, saw that post. Tried it too......nada. I've got a C30KCT S/N too.
Just curious for those of you that have successfully unlocked your tablet.....did you happen to register your device's S/N with ASUS?
No registering necessary. Just go here:
http://usa.asus.com/Tablet/Transformer_Pad/ASUS_Transformer_Pad_TF300T/#download
choose android as your OS and click on Utilities and download the Global link and transfer that apk file to your tablet and run it. You should be be unlocked after running the program and following the on screen instructions.

The app you just told people to download is the same one that isn't working. The problem they're having with the app is that they get a network error when they run the app. The error is because the user's serial number isn't in the Asus database. This wouldn't be a big deal if you could just tell Asus and ask them to fix it. Unfortunately, the instant you run the app, you lose your warranty, so when you tell them that you ran the app and it didn't work, they tell you you're out of a warranty, and they can't help you.
The only solution anyone's found so far is to keep trying and hope Asus adds your serial to their database.

Thanks for the heads up did not know that I guess my friends and I have been lucky then unlocking our bootloaders I mean I unlocked and rooted about 10 tablets and didnt come across this lol.
Yeah, the problem first got attention when a bunch of people weren't getting OTA notifications. Some folks went to devicetracker.asus.com and entered their serial numbers and were told that the serial number was invalid. These same people got tired of waiting for the OTA and decided to just unlock their tablets and install custom ROMs. Unfortunately, they just got a network error. Someone, at some point, called Asus support about the OTA and was told about the database problem. Apparently, it hasn't been completely fixed yet. Eventually, I think, most people either got their OTAs and/or the unlocker started working. There were also reports that downgrading to .17 and doing a factory reset solved the problem for some people but not others. Other people said that clearing data for certain services made it work, but not everyone got that to work, either. The only options you have are to either wait or return the tablet and hope the replacement doesn't have the same problem.
So, if you've received OTA's and registered with device tracker it'd be a safe bet they have you in the their db, right?
Yup. I meet both criteria and just unlocked successfully.

Unable to unlock, registered through Asus

I apologize, I do realize that several threads have been posted in regards to this matter; however, I have not seen any clear answers or solid consensus to what one should do with this issue. I bought my tablet at the beginning of January at Office Max ( live in USA) and almost immediately registered through Asus website. I have heard mixed reviews to whether or not registering has proved useful, but I can say that it has not for me. I have tried unlocking almost everyday since I bought the device. I have contacted Asus several times via telephone and email and have received a different response to the matter everytime. I would rather not RMA the device, as I use it for college; however, I will if I have to. I have also heard mixed reviews in regards to those who have RMA'd their devices and several have stated that they were still unable to unlock after receiving the device back... I am also unable to download OTA updates through the device which does lead me to believe that there is an issue with the MAC address, but I am not certain in that thinking. This issue has of course been frustrating, and honestly I am looking to others for answers, as I said I really only want to RMA the device if I truly have to..... Thanks for your time.
Hello Hammersuit,
I am experiencing the same troubles with a (german) TF300T, delivered with version WW V10.4.2.18.
I downloaded the ASUS "Unlock Device App" from the ASUS site. Any unlock procedure results in an "unknown network error. please try again later". So I registered my device and kept it online for some days (as sugested here). This did not work either, so I contacted the ASUS support asking to check the SN and Wifi mac.
The answer was, that they would not support the unlocker app. But the guy was kindly enough to check their database and said everything should work fine. Also I should use the latest Firmware.
The TF300T wouldn't auto-update the firmware, but I was able to manually update it to V10.4.2.20 (Downloaded from ASUS website, unziped once and put onto SD card. The update was immediately detected and it worked).
Status: I am running V10.4.2.20 now, but the unlock still does not work.
Edit: Just saw this thread here. I think I'll try asking ASUS to re-validate my mac as suggested.

I was able to manually update as well. This leads me to believe that our issue does lie within a faulty MAC address or S/N. I have yet to test my patience by contacting Asus again, but if you can form your question around the basis of OTA updates as opposed to unlocking the bootloader they will at least attempt to help. I think that asking them what your MAC is and possibly correcting it will be the only way to resolve this issue...

I have exchanged several emails with support now with the same support person, I managed to confirm I do have a MAC address issue but she was adamant the only fix is to send it in. If only Asus had an xda rep who knows the real fix for this issue and correct all of ours.
I have the same problem. I was the bootloader unlocked but i sent my tf300 to asus because i had a problem with the usb and sd card of the dock. And now the bootloader its locked. I thought that asus locked it. I have tried to open again but it said the same error. "Error network conection"..

Unfortunately a lot of users here on xda have reported their devices coming back from AST no different than the day they sent them in... As a college student I really don't have the time to waste on sending in my device and it being returned back saying all is dandy lol. I wish we could root JellyBean without unlocking... then I wouldn't be complaining so badly...

[Q] Unlocking without Asus's apk

Hi,
last month I sended my TF300T to Asus because I had a problem with it. The tablet wouldn't upgrade itself and the sensor for the keyboard stopped working leaving the screen on.
My tablet was unlocked. I knew that there was a risk!
But when the tablet came back fixed, with the system 4.2.1 was happy and felt very lucky.
But now, I'm not that sure.
As the warranty finished shortly after the tablet came back, I said to myself that there was no reason to not unlucked it again.
I went to Asus's web site, downloaded the apk and runned it and:
I get the answer "Unknokn connection error, please try again"
In fact it seem that Asus does not want taht I unlock the boot loader again.
Is there another way..
Thanks...

Call Asus and tell them that they need to add your serial and new mac address back to their database so you can unlock it again. Keep nagging them until they do it. This is the ONLY fix for you.

Hello,
that's what I did, and the support guy told me that its impossible to reset my serial number in the database. He told me that I'll need to send the tablet back for tech service.
For now I have a RMA for sending back my tablet.
I won't pay for shipping, as they'll pick up my tablet at my house.
I found that a little strange. But for now I'l wait to see what will happen.
Thanks for your help...

Hi,
last month I sended my TF300T to Asus because I had a problem with it.
Thanks...

Have you paid for a repair? Has your warranty void by Asus?
Sorry to bring up an old thread...But does anyone know what a second error beyond the network one would be? It lets me verify my google account then sits for a long time. After that I can an error "Unable to unlock device at this time. Please try again later." Same serial number issue or something different?
Edit: after restarting a couple more times, I got it to work!

[Q] Am I in for a bad time? Refurb TF700T and unlocking

I just purchased a refurbished TF700T and keyboard dock from BuyDig for 269.99. Pretty good price. I briefly owned a TF700T before, and did notice the sluggishness out of the box, but a 1200p tablet for practically $170 is hard to beat. When I had originally owned it, I was aware of CleanROM cleaning up Asus' slow eMMC mess, but at the time given the expense of the device I wasn't willing to give up the warranty. So now that the investment is a little lower, I'm more willing.
The refurb I believe is carried out by ASUS who then sells them back to BuyDig.
The reason I'm asking if I'm in for a bad time is because I've seen reports of other refurb owners who had terrible times getting their devices to unlock, specifically with messages like "unknown" or "invalid" serial numbers when attempting to input theirs. Or they were getting network access errors when trying to communicate with the servers that were responsible for unlocking the devices.
Does anyone have any input on this or experience being in this situation?
Would also like to hear any reports of unlockable success by recent buydig purchasers.
The unlock bootloader poll is only showing that 20% of the responders have issues...but 32% is unknown.
Buydig has a 45 day return/exchange policy, so I’m thinking that I’m going to roll the dice and hope that I don’t need to try and return it.
The only way to find out is to try it! If one thing is consistent in this unlock mess it's that it's totally inconsistent.
Works like a charm for some, others can't unlock at all. And it does not seem to have anything to do with new/refurb/repaired under warranty

thanks. I just received my refurb today. is it possible to try out the unlook tool to see if it is going to work for a specific device without actually voiding the warranty?
I'd like to wait at least a week or so to see if any major hardware issues pop up. so far, tablet looks to be in working order but some more time before going all in would be nice.

No, you click the button, it either works, and your warrent is voided, or it doesn't work.
Or another option is to contact Asus, and ship it to them, and have them unlock it for you.

LOL! Never heard of that option! If you have first hand experience I would love to hear about it!
I think it's rather the other way around: You ship it to them unlocked for an unrelated problem and it comes back permanently locked.... Asus does not support unlocking.

No, I had problem unlocking it, and gave it to the local Asus refurb place, and had them unlock it for me, took them a week to finally unlock it though.

thanks for posting that. I'll probably wait a week or so then give it a try.
overall, I’m pretty happy with it so far. There is some lag – noticeable in Chrome – but definitely useable. Hopefully, I can get a custom/optimized rom running on this shortly.
Really liking the display so far. Native blu-ray files look great.
