(Q) ParanoidAndroid 3.+ - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I have just a quick question. I'm sure that it isn't possible but I figured I'd ask anyways considering what you developers are capable of.
I'm currently running ParanoidAndroid 3.+ and I was wondering if there was a way to have multi windows like I have on my note 2? I know stock roms have this feature but I'm just too darn attached to aospa! Thank you in advance!

I believe the multiwindow feature is exclusive to Touchwiz ROMs, I might be wrong though. I ran Synergy for a while because of the multiwindow feature, however I think it's more of a gimmick than something that in functional for the S3. I just stopped using it. Even without multiwindow, you still have so much customization with PA.

[Q] Type of Galaxy Matter?

Hello everyone,
I am probably going to be upgrading to the galaxy siii in 3 days or so and I am just making sure that it doesn't matter what type of Galaxy siii I get, for example the white vs. the blue one, wil that make a difference in terms of rooting and flashing aoskp?
Also would you guys recommend getting the nexus or the siii? I really do not want touchwiz so I will be flashing cm10 or aoskp asap... Would you say they are stable enough for everyday use at the moment?
Thanks,
Ljbaumer

The color doesn't matter. What matters is the model number which will vary depending on the carrier. The S3 is definitely a superior phone hardware wise. CM10/AOSP/AOKP is not stable enough for everyday use IN MY OPINION.

Thanks,
I know for a fact that I will be sticking with Verizon on this upgrade (that should work?), what isn't working with stock android at the moment for the sgs3?
The main deciding factor for me is really just if some version of aosp (stable-ish) is working for the phone because I cannot stand touchwiz.

The unofficial CM10 builds are mostly working, and lots of folks will call them daily drivers. At the moment, as far as I know, there are some issues with MMS and handoffs between 3g and 4g. MHL-out might not be working either. Beyond that, CM10 is in pretty good shape.
You have some good options for TW-based ROMS, too. Between debloated ROMs, third-party launchers and lock screens, AOSP versions of apps like Messaging, and modded notification shades, you can pretty much hide or replace most of what you'll see of TW. It works quite well if the remaining CM10 bugs are deal-breakers.
Once you disable the wifi notification the stock rom is more than good. None of the custom roms IMO are up to snuff to bother flashing. I'm sure people will say otherwise but the GS3 has very minimal bloat. Doesn't even need rooted YET.

The Synergy ROM is great. I also do not like TW but am using a different launcher (Apex) and everything is working fine. The color does not matter but I have noticed a bunch of posts from people wanting to trade their blues for whites...
Thanks for all of the information guys,
MMS is not very important for me (SMS is) and I don't really have a problem with having issues with switching between 4g and 3g, but what is 'MHL-out'?
Also are there any good step by step rooting, installing recovery, etc guides out there that someone can link me to? I am coming from Motorola and HTC phones and I am completely unfamiliar with how Samsung phones are set up... for example, do we need to bootstrap this since the phone has a locked bootloader?
If you check in the Development section for the samsung galaxy s3, you can see many rooting methods. I personally used the one by Noxious Ninja, because it was fast, effective, and was convenient because I flashed AOKP immediately. If you are planning on using a custom rom with a custom kernel, you will need to use a kernel with KEXEC support. Through a couple reboots, it will successfully enable you to use roms that support it.
AOKP in my opinion was super stable once I cleared up the data issues manually. I used it for a long time as a daily driver and it worked really well. The only reason I switched to SynergyROM was because I was trying to try something on my S3.
EDIT: Oh yeah, MHL-Out is the interface for outputting video from the S3 to say a television.
Thanks yosterwp,
If I were to use AOKP do I need to be running a custom kernel or can I run the stock kernel?
If I don't change the kernel should I be able to OC?
If you were using aokp, all you would need to do is to get a KEXEC recovery, and then flash aokp rom and gapps like you normally would. And BAM! You should be running AOKP. No custom kernels to flash on your part, as AOKP includes its own kernel.
Just note that since you are using a custom kernel, your s3 will appear to bootloop (or restart many times), but that is okay as you will eventually land in unicorn utopia.
EDIT: As for OC'ing, I believe by accident, the developer had left the rom overclocking to 1.9GHz by default, you may want to lower that.
Alright, thank you for the warning about the accidentally OC'ed CPU.
Will SetCPU work fine for changing the processor speeds on the SGS3 or will I need a different type of OC'ing application?
Also what is your opinion on Paranoid Android? It looks quite cool in my opinion but I am not sure if I would like it better than CM10 or AOKP. I guess the only way to know is to try it out!
Thanks again,
Ljbaumer
Yes set cpu will work for regulating over clock.I have used paranoid on galaxy nexus and loved it.I havent tried it out on my s3 yet tho.I have liked the jelly bean Rom that's out for this phone so it maybe another option for ya also.

Thanks,
Quick question, I just got the SGS3 about an hour ago, will rooting with "i535VRLG1" work? Or am I screwed?

What is the best i815 experience ROM without sacrificing features?

Hi all,
My i815 is coming in tomorrow. I've been digging around for the best ROM to put on it, and I wanted to get some opinions. I would love to do Iocerra's CM 10.1, but I'd rather like to use the IR functionality of this tablet. It looks like this ROM may be my best bet, but I'm not 100% sure its fully operational.
Any thoughts?
The main functions I need are 3G/4G, GPS, hot spot, and IR.
Any insight is much appreciated! Having a Galaxy Nexus with Jelly Bean and having this thing on Honeycomb tomorrow is going to drive me nuts I'm pretty sure.
Brandon
If you want 100% features, go with the ICS "leak" -- the rom you linked to.
Otherwise, CM 10.1 has the best support as no other custom roms support data or the GPS on the i815.
Samsung includes all the apps you need (and all the apps you DON'T need) for stuff like the IR blaster.
What JB features are you going to miss on ICS?

Thanks for the reply. I am going to really miss the butter.
My i815 came in today and actually came with 4.0.04 already on it! I was stoked to see that. Its pretty fluid, definitely workable to keep all of the features. This will do for now, although I do wish someone would be willing to fix the IR blaster, but I assume no one wants to because it might be a ton of work for little payoff in the grand scheme of things.
Thanks, again.
Brandon
ICS isn't all that bad. I did disable most of Samsung's bloatware, though.
I've noticed that I get MUCH better blacks on CM 10.1 though. When I used LCD testing program that makes the entire screen go black on the stock ICS rom, it really was more like a glowing dark grey. On CM 10.1, I do the same in a pitch-black room and see only a hint of light. Have you tried testing your AMOLED screen yet and/or noticed anything similar?
Well according to me the best is CM10.1 but there are some problems with calling, GPS & Bluetooth. So, use CM10...

CM10 doesn't support GPS.

[Discuss] Which are you more excited about, TW 4.3 or AOSP 4.4?

So with the probability that we'll be getting OTA 4.3 soon and the official 4.4 nightlies bound to start anytime, which are you most looking forward to?
I love the features of TouchWiz, but I've migrated to CyanogenMod since 4.1.2 feels really dated now.
Which features do you like about your respective favorite and why?

I'm not here to make fun. I think TW has as many benefits as AOSP does, just for different reasons. :highfive:
Just wanted to see what everyone else's thoughts were.
I am running CM 11 and I have enabled ART. I was excited about TW but as of right now I am just happy with how stupid fast this is.

I have owned my s3 since release. I have ONLY ran AOSP since day 1. Haven't even tried TW hell I might like it.
Will defiantly move to 4.4 once there are cherry picks. I enjoy aosp so to answer your question 4.4!

Please do not check the box "yes this is a question" as it puts a [Q] in the title and then those get moved to Q&A
I have edited your title to read [Discuss], although the whole AOSP vs., TW subject has been beaten to death
It is just a matter of preference and many of these threads can be found across XDA

4.3 TW to be honest
Want to see if it boosts Quadrant benchmarks since the CM11 builds certainly haven't
Who cares if the quadrant score isn't higher? As others have said, 4.4 is insanely fast! I don't need a score to tell me that. 4.3 TW may have higher quadrant scores but it won't touch 4.4 AOSP for real life speed. Apps open instantaneously, lag is nonexistent... What are you looking for?

Ofc TW will bench better since they "cheat" to boost scores in certain benchmarks.

Actually Ubuntu Touch is what i wan't the most
I like TW. I have been running carbon since goodness is MIA. I can say I look forward to a new TW. I miss some of the features.
Tough question. If we even see TW 4.3 anymore, I'd say that. I was on the cm11 builds for a few days, and like most aosp roms, it is plagued by camera quality and data issues. Data is fine in good service areas, but low/fringe areas struggle, then it murders your battery. I had to come back to TW for stability. I know cm11 is young, but even some aosp 4.2 and 4.3 roms give me similar results with the camera and data issues. Just my experience.

As much as I'd love to use CM11, I can't stand the AOSP camera and that is why I use Touchwiz. CM11 looks so good though, and apparently has something called "ART" which apparently is good, so I will probably flash a CM11 rom to give it a try, but will end up reverting to Touchwiz like always because of the camera.

Exactly like me. I don't even like the TW interface, but the camera and data issues always make me come back. I tried CM11 over the weekend, and it was really smooth. ART is pretty cool, too. Makes the apps launch almost instantly, but isn't compatible with all apps. Makes for a lot of troubleshooting and xda reading. What made me switch back to TW was when my girlfriend and I were literally right next to each other using our phones, she had 4G (Galaxy S4) and I had no data. It never came back until we moved to an area with a little better signal.

ART is not part of CM , its a experimental runtime environment that Google has inserted into 4.4 . At this point it's mainly experimental for developers. Many / most current apps don;t support it.
If you don;t like the way TouchWiz looks , you can run any other launcher on a TW ROm and have the best of both worlds, stability and all features working with a different UI appearance.

Just my .02 but the TW vs. AOSP was never just about appearance. It was more about the amount of "bloatware" on TW roms that some never use or see any need for. Most of the Samsung features and apps fall into the this category.
I just went back to a TW ROM due to way too many random reboots, shoddy data, and mediocre camera quality. It's a love hate relationship, because the only thing I like about TW is the data and camera, while the UI and buttery smoothness of AOSP is what I really enjoy. TW ROMs always lag for me. If only we could have both together...

Apps you don;t want are easily removed or frozen. They don;t hurt anything just sitting there anyway. The Custom TW ROMs have the useless items removed while retaining the good stuff like All Share and the IR Remote functions. They also add the options to install themes, lots of 4.3 and 4.4 features etc. That's why there's not a lot of excitement about 4.3 or 4.4, we already have most of it.
I am excited for both.
I really wish there was working multiboot for the d2vzw, though. When I'm traveling, I'd rather be on TW because I find battery life and camera quality are much better. Otherwise I'm on AOSP.

AOSP Multi-Window Any Time Soon?

Now let me say I LOVE the freedom and beauty of CM, AOKP, and all the AOSP type ROMs, but I keep going back to TW for the plan convinces of the Note 4 like features like quad-view, the ability to be able to transfer stuff from window, and other newly incorporated features since the N4 and LP. I know these are newer features and devs need time to get these this going, but I wonder if it will infact be implemented or not. Its heavy and my cause issues. I hope we do see these things added plus now that xposed is LP compatible I think the world of AOSP LP is just starting. Would you like to see features added from TW and ported over? If so, which ones? Or if not, why would you not like it? Im not a dev so Im unsure of compatibility or issues if this was done. I would love to hear from you.

Galaxy Note Pro 12.2- Pen Apps Not Working After Flashing CM12.1

Flashed with cyanogen, pen apps not working?
Hi,
For some reasons I couldnt post in the developer section where I already started posting a few days ago...
Anyway I just sucessfully flashed my samsung notepro 12.2 with the latest:
CyanogenMod 12.1 (Android 5.1.1) | LOLLIPOP | 20150823
Everything works fine so far but now that I wanted to try the pen. I noticed that the apps and the button on the pen does not work. Neither does the side panel where you on the original firmware drag from right to left, and it has bunch of apps there.
I guess this is not anything faulty but Im wondering if theres a way to get this functionality back?
Thank you
Spen support and apps is only available in Touchwiz based ROMS. Sadly there is no simple solution, the drivers don't work on non-TW Roms.

very weird... Your telling me that someone made this rom for the samsung NOTEpro and did not include functionality for the pen? Isnt that what the device is used for? If so then very sad indeed....
Can you find any help from here?

Unfortunately so.
It's not the ROM dev's fault, though. Samsung's Spen drivers only work with Touchwiz, they're dependent on TW's files. Build a ROM without TW and the drivers can't run.
It's the same for the Note 2, Note 3, Note 4 and likely the Note 5 as well.
Wait, does it means the Spen doesn't work on GN Pro with CM, like, at all ? I can survive with the S Commander and so on I don't use that at all, but does it means that drawing software won't work ?
