The veil of confusion - HTC One S

Got my 1Sc2 yesterday, after having S4 ver for few days (don't ask). I'm so confused with all this (or non of these?) threads about this phone, and I suppose I'm not the only one.
Could someone please who got his head around this make a sticky thread in C2 section with all the basic stuff and links to guides (if there are some) for s-off, rooting, recovery, debranding ota update and so?
After spending some time reading threads just got even more confused! We can't s-off, but can get recovery, but we can't root while we have custom roms...Just a lot of mess.

Most of stuff you need is here

[Suggestion] We need a simple yet in-depth firmware guide

I've noticed a lot of people asking for help when it comes to updating firmware, many people thinking they bricked the phone when they haven't deleted the PG58IMG file, or installed a rom. Some people don't understand ***LOCKED*** in the 3.12 firmware, etc etc.
I feel we should have a definitive guide on firmware updating written up and stickied in one of the subforums. I'd do it myself, but I don't know enough about it (enough not to "brick" my phone however) and I'd hate to spread the wrong information.
Anyone care to chime in?
what about THIS ONE or THIS ONE
the instructions are there already for everyone to read...the problem is they don't read them...i know when i'm doing something new i spend far more time reading the instructions that actually doing it

Custom ROM Help

I was wondering how you would install a custom rom to my ds with the following:
Hboot 2.00.0002 unlocked bootloader with htvdev s on and not rooted.
Thanks in advance
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App
Install a custom recovery, i.e. clockworkmod, see here under section 1, step 2.
do I have to be rooted?
EDIT: I can't s-off my hboot version is there any way to downgrade?
The suggested guide will still work.
If you want to downgrade, there are two threads here (look for them) already for that. Get shell root, then change the misc version then install the RUU.
can you please give me the link to the thread? and what are chances of bricking if I downgrade? And do I need a goldcard and what is one? Thanks
anyone know what to do?
If you cant use search then you are 100% likely to brick your done....
Go the general section.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1031 ....... Then at the topish right it says search this forum....... type in "downgrade" and make sure show threads is selected (noting worse than a million posts from the same thread)...... then its the the two top ones.
Fear not though I have the link here to the search results.
I understand this is all some sort of crazy back water town language and customs, I really do, so take a week and read read read and read, NOBODY is unable to understand it, crazy I know, but is possible.
And if you did some research you'd see that your questions have been asked (and answered) several times.
Good luck for the week ahead.
thanks a lot so if my phone is branded (which it is to vodafone) i download the vodafone ruu? I am following this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399331&highlight=downgrade
does anyone know what to do?
Any help appreciated
As far as i know downgrading works with both branded and unbranded ruus, but i would recommened to use the branded one. Afterwards i would flash the eng hboot (0.98.200) which simplifys further customization.
Sent from my HTC Desire S
i don't understand the bit about the eng hboot what does that mean? and do i need a goldcard? and what is one?
anyone know what to do?
Decide are you going to use HTCdev unlock or are you going to downgrade. If you are sticking with HTCdev then ignore the ENG hboot.
And just make the goldcard already, and no you don't need root, I have two goldcards in drawer, just to be safe, so make the card. I've already told you what to do, you refuse to listen.
I also told you to take a week and read cause you don't know your elbow from you foot currently, and stop bumping your post every few hours.
I won't help any more cause you can't help yourself.

Unlocking, S-ON/OFF, root - explained

Hi!
First: I have read many threads, but I am (like I guess many others) still a little confused on the newest development with HtcDev in game, with regard to unlocking, rooting Desire S. I need a rooted phone in order to install rSAP bluetooth support so it can connect it to my carkit.
I am not an expert, but I have successful rooted my Desire and Desire S (applied an pre-rooted stock ROM), which I also managed to get back to stock. Meaning: I have some experience, although I admit I do not understand linux and other expert mumbo-jumbo.
I believe that answers to this post could help many others looking for the same answers on this forum and trying to root their devices because of SW needs and not ROM experimenting.
My current config - running software 2.10.401.8

Questions:
1. From "factory clean" state on stock ROM - is it possible to make a backup of the system to which I could restore after flashing, unlocking, etc?
Meaning, I could restore the phone to stock without all downgrading, flashing,...
(I guess if possible, I would need to have e CWM or 4EXT installed, which is not possible unless rooted?)
2. I would like to root my phone (see spec. above) -what is the simplest method and the simplest method to revert it back to stock if needed warranty?
(I guess HtcDev+SuperOneClick ? - how is it possible to revert to stock?)
3. It there any other way to install rSAP support without root?
4. Could someone explain in bullets connection between (a) hboot, (b) recovery, (c) ruu, rom and (d) radio.
Thank you!
You're asking for a lot of concentrated info that could have been easily (or not so easily, but anyway) acquired by reading the answers to your questions, broken in parts.
I can write such a topic, but I'm sure it's already been written, and a little bit of search will take you to it. You should try.
Agree with Jack there. This is a lengthy answer you're asking for... and considerable time has already been invested by concerned users here, drawing up detailed tutorials for questions like the ones you've asked.
Do a little looking around and you'll find the answers you seek. They've already been written in detail. All it takes is a little time, and effort.
Cheers
I know, it is written already, but to be honest it is a little bit confusing when in one thread there is like "the best option" to do the unlocking via HtcDev and in other the users are warning others not to do it via HtcDev.
Also, with new SW update and Hboot upgrade things went a little different, that is why my proposal was to write those answers as up to this date in one place. I know that people that are really into that/developers and people that are daily xda-forum visitors may be up to date with all the things here, but for a average visitor it is just a lot of information which is sometimes contradictory...
So, If this is not too much, I would really appreciate you guys answering this and as I said, I am convinced it will also help many other "average" users here.
Best regards!
follow the link to the index I'm my signature, and spend some time to read some of the guides in the initial sections to familiarize yourself with terminology and basics principles, this will assist you
you may need to use HTC dev method to un lock so read that section. (although down grade and revolutionary is preferred but more complex)

There are facts, and there are opinions.
Facts are:
"For doing what you need in this way, do A, B, C. For doing it another way, do X, Y, Z".
Opinions are:
"Doing things THIS way is better than doing things THAT way".
And in addition to both of those, there are users - some of whom attempt things they have no understanding in, obviously fail and come to the forum for rescue - while not being able to understand the help they're getting here. Look in Q&A, you'll see enough such questions.
Between all that, as you understand, there is no perfect guide you're looking for. More than one way to achieve the result, a bit different results that allow you to do the same, but differently. No "know your Linux inside out in 10 min". You need to spend some time reading the FACTS, and as many of them as you can - and then you can have your own opinions, and do things the way you prefer.

Flashing a rom is scarey business and it can leave us worried aboout what happens when it goes wrong. I came here from Galaxy S, ODIN and customs, Windows 7 and ZUNE as well as saving many friends soft bricks which are a walk in the park compared to HTCs, but there are 3 major reasons why people brick their phones, thats right I said people brick their phones:
1) People dont read the entire thread through first and learn the process Before they flash, they just go ahead and do it.
2) If theres something they dont understand in the thread they dont bother to research it first, when it goes wrong, they panick and blame the tools, not them.
3) They dont have any patience and wait for things to finish, when the phone and PC are quiet, it doesnt mean to say theres nothing happening.
This thread will answer some of your HBoot questions, but read the whole thread, read peoples experiences:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443636
And as has been mentioned, read around before you do anything.
Best of luck.. happy flashing

Buying a Sensation next week. I'm really confused. Any help?

Hey,
Sorry if this is annoying, but I'm buying a Sensation next week and I'm confused about a few things. I've read a lot of the threads here and I'm still really confused on where to start with this phone. I'm not a total noob to android, as I have a sidekick right now but from the looks of the forums this phone is quite different with stuff like root, custom roms, etc., so I'm pretty much a complete noob with this one. So where do I start with this phone? I'm not sure in what order to do things and for some reasons I'm confused by the guide threads (what order to go in, etc.).
If anyone can help at all that'd be awesome.
Thank you!

Obviously you want to root the phone.. Just start here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
Then flash away whatever ROM you like..

That thread is outdated and that s-off method will not work unless the phone is still on GB, if the hboot is 1.17 then you can use that guide, but if the hboot is 1.2x (x stands for any number) then use this tool and read the first post carefully http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668276
P.S To find hboot take out phone battery and then place it back in and hold the power button and volume down at the same time until you see a white screen, which should show you your hboot version at the top.
Like the person above me said, you first need to find out what Hboot is it. I have just started rooting last week, about few days ago I successfully rooted my Sensation 4G with no problems and installed Custom Rom. If your Hboot is 1.18 or lower, it easier to use the thread given above which is what I used to root my Sensation 4G which it Hboot was 1.18. If your Hboot is 1.2X, it not gonna be as easy. What I did before rooting ever, was find information about rooting, and Custom Roms, recoveries, etc. to learn more about how to root and to do it properly so you don't **** up your phone. If you follow instructions carefully, you will have no problem, trust me, rooting is piece of cake. Here is a thread that will guide you of rooting http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/221212-faq-rooting-updated-7th-april-2012-a.html#14 It will tell you mostly everything about rooting.

[Q] tried many things, now need help for daughters phone

Hi Guys,
I'm trying to get a 'stable' rom for a phone I've given to my daughter (Evita / Telstra one XL).
I've tried a heap of things, tried to s-off, change radio files etc... Anyway, current status is that it's been unlocked, s-on, and I have twrp.. I'm using KickDroid XL v4.0.0 ROM, looks great, but the phone keeps on rebooting... Also loosing 3G signal, so have to reboot it quite a few times a day to resolve. (tired another rom, same problem, loss of 3g signal and multiple reboots during the day)
I'm sure it's got to do with the radio file, but can't seem to fix that. I've read 'so much!' information, but really confused now. I've tried to supercid it, unsuccessfully, tried to find the all-in-one toolking (bt it looks like its been removed)..
So, this is what I have when I boot it:
*** TAMPERED ***
*** UNLOCKED ***
EVITA PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.11.0000
RADIO-0.23a.32.09.29
OpenDSP-v28.1.0.32.0504
eMMC-boot

TWRP recovery
2.6.3.0
htc one xl

Any help in how to (or if I should) get the radio/hboot up to hopefully resolve the loss of 3G?
I'm no expert, but not that dumb either. I follow instructions from the start, but most of the time it gets stuck half way (ie, when doing supercid, boots to the HTC logo, but won't go any further)..
Any help really appreciated.
The problem is not that the ROM is unstable, the ROM is perfectly stable if you meet the requirements. The problem is your current firmware version. You need to update to the 2.15 firmware package. It does state that very clearly in the "You Need" section in the beginning of the Kickdroid thread. Please search/research properly before posting in future, it's part of the XDA rules. This issue has been discussed extensively in every single Sense 5 ROM thread, plus this is probably the 100th thread like this in our Q&A section.

Why are you even giving your daughter a rooted/modded phone at all? Unless she has an understanding of what root means, its not a good idea. Does she even need anything except a bone stock phone?
thanks timmaaa, I appreciate you taking the time out to reply.
I'll do some more checking on firmware 2.15... I've honestly read about 5 hours last weekend on various threads... some lead to dead ends (it toolbox), some I can't get to work (supercid)... I tried this a couple of months ago, and almost bricked it, but managed to get twrp working...
Redpoint73, are you asking why give her a phone, or why a rooted phone? The answer to the first one is that she is 11, and catches the bus to and from school. The phone is used in an emergency. I've rooted it to give her some new features, and because it was locked with Telstra and that is not the carrier we are using anymore (much cheaper options here than Telstra), so I needed to get rid of the firmware...
Overall, I appreciate any help. I actually run 5 forums (car related), and I fully understand noob's coming on and asking the same question week after week. Our forums have a lot less posts than this one (< 200,000), but we still have members, week in-week out, answering the same questions because they like to help, and because sometimes there is too much information out there to sift through, especially when somebody is willing to point you in the right direction with a friendly smile
duplicate post, (sorry, hit save twice!)

Its pretty clear from my post that it was root/mod that I was referring to. Root has nothing to do with Subsidy (SIM) Lock, and the firmware has little to do with the carrier you are on (I've been using the German T-Mobile stock ROM for a while now, despite being on AT&T).
Of course its up to you to decide what you do with the phone. But you should consider (if you haven't already) the security risk of giving a rooted device to a user that knows little or nothing about such things. Even more so for s-off, which is necessary for the solution that timmaaa suggested.
My question has less to do with exactly "who" the phone is for. But more to the point, when people come on here saying they are modding the phone for "someone else" (be it mom, third cousin, or whatever), if that person isn't doing it for themselves, its pretty questionable whether they need such mods at all.
ok, thanks redpoint73..
I understand where you are coming from, and appreciate your comments.
Now, anybody else like to point me in the right direction (to a link to get the latest firmware, or a compatible one working)?

You serious? timmaaa already told you where to find it.
Since I'm feeling charitable right now, here it is, complete with step-by-step instructions (only need to follow Posts #2 and 4): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2485865
The original thread where Turge posted his firmware package (see under "OPTIONAL", s-off is required before doing this): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=45072132&postcount=1
Or just install the Beastmode kernel (S-off not required): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2165880
thanks mate. I appreciate the charity, I really do I'm trying not to be a nob.. I'm actually having another go this morning... I've got win 8.1 (yeah, I know) so trying to get the latest driver to work is a pain.... Just trying x_factory windows, backups up twice, but then doesn't run the next command (to change CID)...
Anyway, thanks again. I'll persist on...
