A week ago Tuesday, my TF101 (B40) and dock (B90) were working fine. I charged them up and then put them in a carry bag for a weekend trip (still docked). I never used it on the trip or the following week. This morning I tried to power it on and it wouldn't; I figured it was a dead battery. Still docked, I plugged it in and the light was solid red on the dock (not blinking red which it usually does when depleted). After over an hour, I still cannot power on my tablet. I now have the tablet plugged directly into the wall, no dock, but I thought I'd post to get some ideas in case that doesn't revive it. If it was all the way dead, how long would it likely take to charge enough to come on? Is there a way to see if there's something else? Unfortunately for me, I have some data on it that isn't on the microSD; is there any way to even get in a state to copy the files off as a USB drive or something?
It's unrooted, stock Honeycomb (I never upgraded because I use Flash in the stock browser for Amazon Prime).

Have you tried holding the power button for like 10 seconds, it could have just locked up holding it does a reset a bit like taking the battery out and putting it back in.
Also I believe in between the headphone jack and the HDMI there is a little hole, might be worth having a Google but I think that is another reset type button.
Even if the batt is completely dead it only needs to be plugged in for 5 secs for your to be able to switch it on with the power still in.
So it's been an hour and a half and it still won't power on, even holding it down for 30 seconds, and also doing a Volume Down + Power for 30 seconds. I'm trying to get a full charge on the dock now to make sure it isn't my charger or cable, and then I am hoping that re-docking will supply enough power to bring it on.
Edit: The dock now has a full charge, indicated with a green LED. The tablet is docked in and won't power up.

Actually, it might be working..
Try plugging it into a TV or another screen via HDMI cable..
I had a similar problem with mine, where I thought it was a power thing but infact it was a dead touch screen..
I actually did a complete flash back to stock via this method and sent it back for repair.
Lucky for me it still had the little sticker on the bottom of it and they replaced free of charge..

^^ This.
Otherwise I would completely kill the battery on the tablet, then try to recharge it via dock or direct cable, you may want to hold the power button for 30+secs to attempt to get it working, and see if your computer will detect it in APX mode via cable.. (Power + Vol up, no image will show) Then try reflashing it.
ToD
Thanks for responses so far. It now is recognized by Windows and I was able to get my data off, thankfully. I can't find my HDMI cable but I will try that soon to confirm it as a display issue.
Is there any chance it got a corrupted load from something OTA (I was still on Android 3.x) and is stuck in APX mode? It is a stock device but I read that APX-mode doesn't show you anything on the screen (like Fastboot does on my phone).

If its recognized by windows normally its not stuck in apx mode (windows detects "apx" mode, and you cant openly transfer files in apx) im assuming your not covered by warranty, you could pull it apart (easy to do) and see if anythings out of place, e.g loose connections, possibly even the battery connection but top priority is getting a hdmi connection going to see if its just the display or more.
there is a good youtube video that i used to confirm that i had touchscreen death.
its a tear down video and shows how to push the touch connector back into position as this seems to slide off
on a few devices, thus you lose touch screen.. check the q&a thread as i have posted a link to the video a few months ago..

^^ This, they are well known for pulling their own display cable out of place when they receive a knock, the ribbon cable is wrapped around the battery so when you knock it, the battery shifts and pulls the ribbon cable out of its socket, fairly easy fix once you get the back off and find the cable

Thanks to everyone who responded! I confirmed via HDMI that the tablet is working and the touch interface is active. I'll tear it down this weekend and put that cable back in!
So I'm bumping my old thread, because despite my good intentions in March I didn't try to open it up until a few weeks ago, and then the cable looked properly seated. I still disconnected and reconnected it to make sure and the tablet display still doesn't work.
Is there a chance I did something wrong or could it just be a bad display or other circuit board? I checked and via HDMI the touch interface still works. I don't want to give up on it because a repair or even buying a different TF101 off eBay is cheaper than a TF700+new dock.

I recently hard bricked my phone it wont turn on, hold volume key and try putting in download mode. Connected to Charger no background picture or lighting at all. So i was frustrated and messed around with my phone and apparently unbricked it.
I held down the volume keys power button and plug in a usb jig and it went into download mode after numerous attempts trying to turn on the phone show some kind of lighting to just regulalry use the Usb Jig. if you have a hardbricked sg4g u can try this method.
I hold the volume keys for couple sec then plugged in the jig and it went into download mode after numerous attept to get some kind of BAck lighting to use the jig regularly
ack lighting

Yeah I used a usb JIG to fix my friends captivate the other night. JIG is apparently pretty universal to get into Download mode on samsung phones.
I'll be keeping that JIG handy in case I ever need it again . I took a iGO power tip and stripped the black rubber off, then disconnected the iGO part from the USB wires. Then slowly removed the silicon plastic from the wires.
Touch the yellow wire and black wire (pin 4 and 5) with 3 connected transistors and bing! download mode.
Was his regular bricked? Like it showed some kind of lighting?

His was bricked in the sense that you could turn it on, but it did nothing. Yes, lighting but nothing happened. No AT&T Logo etc.
As soon as I JIG'ed it (3 seconds holding the transistor ends on the 4 and 5 pin) it instantly brought it into download mode.

Jig is just another word for tool. In this case a tool to get a bricked samsung device into download mode.
Read up a bit in this thread. I stripped an iGO power tip ($10 at radio shack) that is for the USB port on samsung phones. Then used three transistors wrapped around and covered with tape ($0.99 at radio shack) to touch the yellow and black wire (pin 4 and 5 on the usb end).
This causes the phone to go into download mode when the 3 button salute and other options fail.
You can get one for 8dollars on ebay

Yep, you are correct. I already had the materials. Additionally, wasn't a situation where if I had to go get them I wouldn't. Waiting for shipping would be too long.
Definitely multiple ways to get a jig.
very good info Joe, I bookmarked this in case I run into the same issue.
you're all talking about SOFT bricked devices here...
If you have backlights when you turn the device on, but no on-screen display (no AT&T or custom ROM logo), your device isn't HARD-BRICKED.
With the exception of the first run / initial batch of Galaxy Vibrants, the 3 button recovery and/or download mode options should work just fine (and you don't need a JIG; but it doesn't hurt to have one handy. My buddy's I9000 would NOT go into download without a JIG; but my SGH-I897 would, no problem).
Holding VOL up & VOL down while the device is off and then inserting the USB cable will put you into download mode. if this works, you have SOFT brick, and can breathe easy.
HARD bricked devices have no back-light response -- not from A/C *or* USB. They don't turn on, and the JIG does NOT work... I am speaking from personal experience here. Flashing does have its risks...
The only way I personally know how to fix a HARD-bricked device, is to send it in for warranty repair/replacement (and hope that Samsung doesn't dig too deep into why the device is borked).

or be one of the lucky few that spent the money on a riff box jtag
For the price of a riff box you can buy a new phone (more or less. you're looking at about $229 + shipping -- and there's no guarantee it'll be successful).
The dude who makes Cognition ROM (@designgears), hard-bricked his galaxy and the riff box jtag didn't fix it, FYI (according to his tweets).
After I sent my SGH-I897 in for service, I replaced it with a new-in-box/unopened Dell Streak 5, for CDN$50 (total). So, even if Samsung send it back as-is, I'm only out the cost of the captivate ($550) plus $50-- which, at the end of the day, is still better than a kick in the ass with a frozen mukluk.
hello guys..
recently i downloaded some ROM and i wanted to flash it, and that wasnt' my frist time i ever flash a rom..
and reset the factor and the cash then reboot and then no respond at all from my Galaxy Note...
not even a light or respond to A/C nor USB..
i tried to make that simple USB JIG but didn't work..and i think it is a hard brick...
so i think i will send it for maintenance, but my serious question is.. is there any chance i will get my NOTE work again? or did i lose it forever??

I had same problem with battery. After going below 5% it got into something like "charge loop", so I asked my friend to lend me his universal charger and then I bought the one I linked you, just in any case if that happen again.

When the phone goes full-retard mode*, it charges and then auto-boots and drains faster than it charges. It's the damnedest thing when it happens. You can't keep it from booting when it's decided it wants to so you have to sit there and yank the battery every time it starts trying to boot.
*Motorola has a patent pending on full-retard mode. Google needs it to fend off Apple.

LOL OMFG thats a good one man
um, youd prolly be better off just charging it up, booting into bootloader and reflashing the sbf appropriate for you
I already did that....its just showing a kid peeing on the motorola logo then bootloop again...
Had s similar problem (blackscreen while usage, then stuck on bootloop even after flashing stock SFBs) .. i fixed it by doing .. nothing. Just leaving the battery out of the phone a few days (one night was not enough!)
Ok! I got into the bootloader! But it said "battery low cannot program' but i charged almost 8 hours! With the buttons with light everytime i plug in the wall charger!

u have really activated the retard mode*, meaning the phone will boot up while charging and the bootloop is sucking the battery dry.
2 Solutions: Pull the battery, everytime the phone boots. I did that for 1-2 hours and it was not enough ....
2nd solution: buy an external battery charger

If you can get it to the point of Calvin Pissing and then boot loop, then the problem could be just that you need to Wipe Dalvik and cache partions and reset.
But I see now the problem is that you don't have enough juice. Try turning the phone off completely and then pull battery for a 15 mins or so. Then put battery in and plug in but do not turn it on. A battery icon will appear with charge amount. See it if goes up or down after about an hour. Think that if you can get it to 30-40% it should be enough to boot up and then wipe.
50% is the usual base amount for sbf flashing though, so might want to wait for that. If you haven't already flashed the SBF and have a working ROM in there already, stay on it and try the above. Would hate for you to wipe everything, including OR and Root, if it is only a charge issue and not the ROM itself. Check cords and plugs too.
thanks mate!! but im here in SAUDI ARABIA i have different card (
I've never had to resort to this yet, but:

This phone is just really, really, unbelievably stupid sometimes. If it thinks it's supposed to boot with minimal power, the only way to stop it is to do a proper shutdown (requires you boot successfully first or get into adb and run "reboot -p") or yank and replace the battery--that usually gives you about 15min before it will try to boot again. I used to just constantly wait and yank the battery whenever it started to boot. I got tired of that and got a second battery and wall charger pretty cheap online ($5 total, genuine Motorola). The bottom four leds on with a black screen is a tell-tale sign of full-retard mode.
are there any solutions? i cant do this myself ..... but thanks man for your help!

I did this once
It work fine
You just connect 2 of the 4 wire in an usb cable (you have to sacrifice a cable)
I gonna search a little more you have better pics with a droid i think
but you have to remove the battery. i don t know if you have too but it s less dangerous (the battery can t explode) and it s much more easy to connect the wires
I did this:

You just connect the red to the + and the black to the - You do your Macgiver so that don t move (i use scotchtape but you can see he is using wire...)
Really easy (more than it s look like)
I just don t touch the phone during the whole flash progress
But i read that you can charge the battery directly by connecting the wire on it (the same red + black -) you charge it during 30minutes and you have enough to flash
You can see it in the pic in the bottom left
But I don t test this trick i recommend to use the first one...

And what do you use to stick the wire scotchtape or something else?
I have a lot of battery issues lately... For info I have my xt720 for 1year and 3mouth i buy right after motorola release it
So if that can help someone...:
This is my first post with my first battery "blackout"...
My phone is dead !!!!

It don t want to charge anymore
This morning i notice it wasn t fully charge after going out but i came back before it die so I plug it i had about 10% left
5min after it make me some no battery alarm ( 3 or 4) like if the phone was not plug anymore i replug it. it works but without moving it it stop charging
It reboot but with 5% battery and die
Now i can t boot anymore
Sometimes my led light but it never boot...
I hope it s only my usb cable or my electric plug that is causing it but i don t think so since i don t touch it when it stop charging...
I don t know what to do!!
It was my only phone...
The next day:
My phone come back to life after one night without battery...
Don t ask me why but this morning it charges like always....
I think its a motorola ota update... loool it s time to change !!!
The evening of the same day i plug it as always (it works well all the day) and not any problem
but this morning (the next day morning) my phone was out (black screen and not any reaction when power on or when pluging it...)
I remove the battery about 10minutes then i plug it and it works (it take about 1hour to start but the battery was totally empty so this is normal)
I m not sure what i m going to do right now...
I think the battery is the problem but i can t be totally sure.....
I hope the nexus prime will be release soon and worldwide...
I m going to try the new Mz CM7 and a battery calibration but i don t believe......

So I remember this from another thread yesterday and I had a similar problem. However my wifes is a bit different. Riddle me this. Her USB port is either not reading or not connecting. I checked her pins and plugged in my phone (works fines). I even went to /system/app/usb.apk and reinstalled. I even jiggled it softly, then wildly and then softly again to no avail.
Any ideas? We can take it in to CBW but man I hate that place with a passion. Would love for it to be something I can fix myself. At this point, i have to charge her battery in my phone and then swap them out until she either gets it fixed or replace the whole damn phone. I spent most of the night backing up her stuff last night (for some reason cannot do a nandroid of /system, data, cdrom, cache, cust or ext. Not sure what is the problem with that. She has 2.1 with app2sd script (much like ESB only not app2ext but rather app2sd)
This has happened to me a few times and freaked me out a little. Rebooting the computer (not the phone) worked, though. I think the USB stack on the desktops/laptops must get confused sometimes. It was even phone specific. One phone would work and the other wouldn't. After reboot both worked again. I feel myself becoming more and more superstitious.

Did that. Actually swap hers into my phone to charge it up and then put mine back. Sucks b/c she is a stay at home mom, so she needs her phone. Seems to me to be a hardware issue. Maybe something connecting the usb port to the phone. Short or bad wire or something like that. She's going to CBW to day to do battle.
if it's really a USB port problem, or lose contacts in the USB of the phone
you can always charge it with an external charger

Our carrier replaced it with a Nexus S, so I might be hitting you up for some suggestions. Easye420 mentioned that you turned him on to some things over there. I'll root it and unlock the bootloader tonight and check it out, then probably PM you.
The problem with ebay and all the internet sellors is that i will have to wait for 2 or 3 weeks to get it....
I will have to quickly go to Paris during the lunchtime (i hope i will find one)
For the info last news of my dying battery...
Now it can t boot with out being plug....
But when it s on then the battery always stay at 0%(I never see the 0 before my battery issue) even after 3 or 4 hours of charge
but a little bit fun when i plug it i have the battery charging animation and it show me that my battery is fully charged...
The end of the story...
I just get my new battery (a standard motorola the same as the stock) (cheap and very fast to get if there is someone having battery problem on Paris... let me know by pm)
and I think everything is coming back to normal...
I m not sure yet cause the battery% is acting weird but i think it s the calibration
When i first plug it it show me 50% after a boot it shows 0% but it was charging...
After another reboot it was at 90%....
My moto is making fun of me!!!
But i think everything will come back to normal after a full charge and discharge...
I will let you know

The first day i changed the battery it worked well i fully charge it and to calibrate it well i fully discharged it (until the phone shut down)
But now it don t want to charge again!!
When i plug it was booting at the beginning but after the boot it show 0% of battery and shut down after 10seconds
I test it 4 or 5 times and now it don t boot anymore
When i plug it sometimes it show me the animation with 50% of battery but it never move and shut down after max 5minutes (and now even this never happened)
I was asking myself about buying a battery charger like you say allgamer but i m not sure if that will work or if it s really broken
Now it don t have any reaction no matter what i try........
I don t know what to do i was waiting for the nexus prime but it will not shown up until at least 2 mouth (maybe more in France)
I think i read one time a guy who connect the power wire of an usb cable directly on the battery to charge it... It was a milestone battery i think (but its the same for the xt720)
Someone know something about that???
I m trying to recharg it only by connecting the wire to the battery...
We ll see... I don t have other solution for the moment (I try it before buying a battery charger)
I did this (bottom left)

After 1hour of "this way" charging
It seems to have charge but just a little (even if i plug it to the charger and not to usb. It is a lot faster when charging the phone)
I can boot it but it still don t charge (i was hoping it will charge again after the battery get a little more juice)
I have plug it another time i will let it charge for 3 or 4 hour it should let me boot and use it a little more i hope....
I had the same battery problem.
I did the same trick to boot up to flashing mode, and flash back to stock sbf.
After that, battery manage to recharge.

Mine don t want to....
I charge it for 3 or 4 hours and it boot without a problem (even if it show 0% battery again) I was able to go to bootloader or recovery but that s not my problem i just need to charge it and it don t want....
I think i m gonna buy a external battery charger. But that sucks it s about 50€ (i already spent 20€ for a battery...) and i m not sure that it will work...
What ROM do you have installed? I think some on the recent CM7's replace the charge_only_mode with a reverse-engineered non-motorola one.

I don t even try this.... It really seems to be a hardware problem
I m backing up my old 6.3 right now...
edit i hope you re right but it don t want to charge even when in the system... I mean after the boot i can play a little bit before the system shutdown and it don t charge even when it s power on...
It s still booting (i hope i m not in a bootloop i don t have the battery for...)
edit 2: the battery last enough to boot but it s the same...
Im gonna buy an external battery charger tomorrow.... I don t have any other choice...
Okay my sister is having major problems with her Xoom. At little background information. Me, my sister and my other brother all received Xoom 4Gs as Christmas gifts. They are all unlocked and rooted. And up until now no major problems besides the occasional lockup. Now to the problem at hand. She was playing a game on her tablet and set it down to go do something. My brother, whom also has a Xoom, picked it up and hit the power button and the little red light next to the camera flashed. So he plugged it in. An hour later the charge light was green which she found odd because it normally takes a few hours for it to charge from dead. She tried to turn it on and nothing happened. No light flash no nothing. Later that day, I tried all the little tricks to get it to come on but nothing works. The only thing that does "work" is the charge light. I took the back off and disconnected the battery for about a minute, I didn't think to check the voltage while i had it apart though. What could it be, would really like to get it back up and running by the end of the month for a trip we are taking.
Or is there a way to get her data off of it?

I faced similar issue , the only thing that was showing was the notification light when charging, after reading all the forums i decided to plug in a micro hdmi cable to the tv so that i can see if the xoom is working.
and yes it was working perfectly fine!!! i could see the screen on tv and the touch was also working but i wasn't able to see anything on the screen(XOOM)
then i finally unscrewed the 2 screws and opened up the xoom , i removed the lcd connection and plugged it again! and THAT WORKED!!!
REALLY!!! TRY That!!!
here is a photo that can help you , you dont have to dig up the whole system, just disconnect the lcd cable and plug it in and be patient please!

Did you try connecting it to your tv using micro usb ?
When you push the power button , does it make the click sound?
Power button in my xoom got used off and became irresponsive , had to take off the back cover and glue some smal piece of foam to it, works, need to push hard but works.

i dont think it is the power button. when i connect it to my computer, the internal HD and the sd card shows up, and i can see all the files on it. that means xoom is working fine, it boot up. but i cant see anything on the screen. will have to wait for my micro hdmi cable and connect to a tv see if i can still use the touch sceen.
my son drop some water into it from where the sd card is. i took apart most parts, battery, motherboard and disconnect all the wires, still nothing.

This trouble started about a month ago. The phone was rooted but I unrooted, factory wiped and then did the ota update last week. The trouble did not go away, unfortunately.
If I am using the phone, and plug the charger in, after a couple seconds it will immediately power off and go to the green charging screen. If I try and power on from there, it will power off again around the time the blu animation plays. Sometimes, it will get to "Android is starting.... Optimizing apps (number) of (number)" It won't get very far into that before it shuts down again. My girlfriend also has a Pure XL and I get the same result when trying to use her charger.
Any ideas what could be causing this?
Thanks!
edit: SOLVED!
Here is what happened: When I first got this device in december, I rooted it the day after it arrived. A week or so later, the phone randomly got stuck in a boot loop. No amount of button presses and or holds helped. The only thing i could think to do was a battery pull. As I was pulling the battery, I tore the ribbon cable in half. Within an hour I had soldered in some kynar to patch the tear. It booted right up and charged no problem at all and didn't give me any trouble until these recent charging issues. Tonight I decided to open it up and check the connections again. Lo and behold, a solder joint had failed in the center (thinnest) part of the patch job. I de-soldered everything, cleaned up the old solder, split the cable up and was able to do a much better patch job this time around. Everything is up and running just like new again. Thank you folks for helping me troubleshoot.
For anyone wondering what the heck I am talking about, here is an image of a similar ribbon cable patch job. This ribbon has 6 tracks. The Pure XL battery only has 3.:

All that seems within spec;
Id try reloading the rom using spflash tool (read the unbrick thread, its full of information)
or if that seems too major of undertaking, maybe pull some adb logcats and see what exactly is causing the reboot

Yeah I rooted it again for logcat access. I used an app called catlog to see the logs (in real time?) Will checking the logs via adb show me the stored logs and hopefully whats happening just before crash?
At what point after powering the phone on does it actually start logging?

Logcat should start logging as soon as its service starts, which is early in the booting stage so it should be logging everything that the system spits out while the phone is booting up and while running.
If you know exactly what to look for and how to troubleshoot Android systems, then you can try to debug the issue yourself. If you don't, just post the log(s) and let someone experienced and helpful check it out. Logs should be the files stored in /dev/log.

Something I've wondered about soldering on those flex cables, does the soldering iron melt the plastic, I've got a few things that could be fixed if I had the balls to try it
Of the admittedly few flex cables I have soldered on, I can't recall the plastic ever melting. I always use some kind of blade to scrape the top layer and expose the metal tracks underneath. If they are really small and or close together, carefully cutting the plastic between the tracks can make the job easier as you can individually lift and solder them one at a time.
Hey. I'm having a similar issue with my phone. How do you get the cable out for the battery? I just purchased this phone with issues from someone and it looks like they tried to remove the battery and I'm having similar issue to you but I'm not able to get the battery out and I don't want to destroy the cable. Thanks.
How do you remove the battery?
