Ever since I flashed to the unofficial release of Froyo for the Captivate, I get an error when I try to apply an update.zip file in 3e recovery. It won't even let me into Clockwork recovery. I've tried a factory restore with ODIN (JF6), along with a Master Clear.
The exact error I get is this:
--Install from package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:Signature verification failed
--Appling Multi-CSC...
Installing Multi-CSC
Installation Aborted.
Any help or ideas to why this is happening would be greatly appreciated
It won't work.
You need 2e or CWM.
Ok. Excuse me, cause i'm new to all this, but how do I get 2e back. I had 2e on there before hand, and as soon as I flashed 2.2 from Samsung it turned to 3e. Everything was working fine, cause I acutally had your ROM running but decided to try the stock Froyo to see if I could fix some problems with one of my apps.
EDIT: Gosh I feel like an Idiot. Never even tried recovery on 2.1. Sometimes I just get a bit ahead of myself. Guess I am gonna have to make do with a different rom if I want Froyo.
flash a kernel with 2e recovery
Use ClockworkMod Recovery to install your "update.zip" files. 3e recovery requires files to be signed. 3e Recovery is also standard on Froyo, so simply "flashing a kernel with 2e" means you'll be running a rom on Eclair (2.1).
For your phone to get into Clockwork, the only file named update.zip on your phone, should be the one that was downloaded through ROM Manager. Any other compilation of files that you want to flash to your phone must be named something different.
Phone to DL mode, use Odin (attached) put the attached file (unzip first to get the .tar) into the PDA slot and hit GO that will put the 2e Kernel on your phone use CWM to put the update.zip on your SD reboot install package and there you go.

Ok, my bad.
Now that's a solution for JI6. There are quite a few ROMs on JK3. Is that JK3 compatible? Bottom line is that Froyo is native 3e recovery. I'd rather deal with 3e recovery & use CWM vs. patching 2e recovery.

JK3 is a i9000 rom. it hasnt been out long enough, but since its an i9000 rom, you would need a reoriented kernel in order for it to work with the captivate anyway....which means that a dev that has made the kernel would have added that feature in.

Hi there,
I'm a newbie to android. Just got my i9000 (international version of Galaxy S) for two weeks which I like it very much and flashed it to the official Froyo 2.2 (Build ZSJPD, which to my understanding is based on the European JPO) straight away. But only recently that I find out that it can neither boot into the recovery nor the download mode via the 3 button method, which makes flashing via the Odin impossible for me. I tried to download the Rom Manager to install the Clockwork Recovery Mod but I faced the same problem as the top message of this thread, i.e. it cannot get into the unsigned CWM recovery as it is running the stock 3e recovery.
Nonetheless, thanks to the "Quick Boot App", I was able to go into the stock recovery mode by clicking the dedicated button. So my question is:
Is there any way I could flash the stock kernel back to 2e recovery, given the above condition, so that I could run the CWM recovery?
Is there any apps, which would actual install a different kernel so that I could bypass the stock kernel?
Hope big guys out there could give me some hint and show me the way! Otherwise, I would miss a lot fun and can't even apply the Universal lagfix.
Alex
I thought the i9000 had a different button combo to get into download mode?

i think you would do better to post this question in the i9000 forums, or better yet, SEARCH the i9000 forums for the answer as you are currently in the CAPTIVATE forums. we have different hardware buttons.

Put this on your internal SD card along with your ROM of choice. Reboot in to recovery and install packages 2 times. The second time it will be in clockwork recovery and you can flash your ROM.
I just had the same problem after doing countless ROM flashes in the past. Perhaps its something in their server preventing the download of CWM? Anyways, thanks for the .zip. Worked like a charm!
yes thank you very much for that zip u saved my life well appreciated
Keep that .zip on your HDD and you can bypass Rom Manager (and all the associated problems) altogether.
I have my phone rooted and unlocked. It's the AT&T Captivate but I'm using it on T-Mobile. I've had no problems so far with it.
I downloaded Clockwork's Rom Manager (v3.0.0.7) and tried to Flash ClockworkMod Recovery to begin experimenting with ROMs.
When I click on that it tells me "An error occurred while downloading your recovery."
I have over 4 gigs of memory left and I have 3 bars on 3g and WiFi going. No internet connection problems (i checked the net using market and using the browser, it works fine.)
What else could be causing the problems.
I'm just wanting to get a good stable rom going which ditches all the junk AT&T put on the phone.

I Can't get the update.zip file to work. After I reinstall packages is says E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (No such file or derectory) Installation aborted. I've tried it probably 20 times today with no luck.
Thank You
Nothing like flashing to find out it wasn't working. Thanks for making my day go better.

if the update.zip is already on your /sdcard/ then there is no reason to try and download/flash clockwork recovery.....thats what the update.zip IS
thats what i thuoght but not true. even goin in normal recovery and selecting to install packages gets a error some about no such directory or something even though updat.zip is there even fix permissions gives a error
I'm having the exact same problem. After reading the development section I have decided to flash a custom rom from my stock rom. Installed "Rom manger" from market, then tried to run the "recovery" got the same error msg. Also uploaded the update.zip to my /sdcard the I got the below errors:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted

Did you flash back to stock JF6 first not JI6?
try this cuz this is what i did and the update.zip worked just fine for me
1. one click back to stock jf6
2. master clear
3. root with galaxy s one click root
(after the root there should be an update.zip in your sdcard)
4. replace the update.zip in the root of your sd card with the one here posted which is the clockwork recovery one and if you want while u do that you can throw in the rom that you want to flash in there as well to kill 2 birds with one stone
(i will re post the update.zip for cwm just in case)
5. power off the phone and boot into stock recovery and hit reinstall packages two times
6. you should now be in clockwork mod recovery and can now flash the rom of your choice
this is what i did and everything went smoothly but this is just me if this helps someone else plz let me know if this works for you
p.s. i will make a video if needed just ask
Try This
After flashing back to stock do a master clear from Odin3
Put update.zip onto internal sd
Boot into recovery
Reinstall packages
After boot enable USB debugging and mock locations
Get Rom Manager from market
Start Rom Manager
Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
Flash away

You guys are making it harder then necessary, the update zip I posted is the clockwork recovery MOD, just flash stock, reboot into recovery and reinstall packages 2 times and you will be in the green clockwork recovery then you can install zip from sd and choose your ROM you placed on your internal sd card. No need to root every again as long as you keep this update zip handy.
I too am having problems with Rom Manager. I just wanted to change modems. No go. So I used the power button to go into Recovery mode, picked the modem file, flashed it then told the menu to reboot system.

i have samsung vibrant with 2.2 stock rom updated via kies. after update i rooted it with superoneclick. and i got superuser app on. then i downloaded rom manager and installed clockwork recovery, in rom manager it says what version is installed and everything but everytime i go to recover it shows me stock samsung recovery mod. so clockwork isn't actually installed. and when i try to flash custom rom via rom manager it goes to samsung recovery mod does somethings and just reboots to normal rom that im running. can anyone tell me what's missing or what am i doing wrong?
Same here
I'm having the same issue. I have SU in apps and Rom Manager has SU permissions. Thanks in advance for any helpful advice.
found a fix. lemme know if you need any help. the step with 3e whatever was weird but just follow the link and download. after doing the shell thing in superuser (don't reboot) run the 3e thing you just downloaded... should be a dos type user interface.

Can't go back to stock Samsung Vibrant ROM!!
“I'm in a similar situation... I've been trying to go back to stock ROM by flashing several new stock kernel images, but i need to find a fool proof way to flash back to stock. The newer stock kernel images are not allowing me to mount the necessary files - I'm not able to find the older stock kernel images without any of the mounting issues.
"E: Can't mount/dev/block/ST110
(Invalid Argument)"
"E: copy_dbdata_media: Can't mount DBDATA: copy default media content failed."
Any one has an answer/solution to this? THANKS”
Did you try installing busybox.. then try installing amon-ra's recovery in rom manager or at boot screen.. the screen where you can select fastboot or recovery and stuff

I have been using Odin 1.7 to flash the stock images. None of the newer stock kernel images have been working for us, hitting us with mounting issues. Now we cannot even get past the standard bootloader and do not have the luxury of a custom recovery. We need an old but reliable stock kernel without mounting issues so we can at least get past the bootloader.
I have the samsung infuse 4g and I have tried the methods in these forums to replace the 3e recovery with the modified version that allows unsigned zips...but when i replace the reovery file in system/bin/ nothing happens it does not change the recovery at all and it will not accept unsigned...I also tried the odin flasher to put a infused kernal on it and it bricked my phone twice, but I used g2g's ultimate unbrick and it works excellent...what can I do???
PS: I am rooted and used root explorer to replace the recovery file!
EDIT: I did change the permissions, and when I try flashing clockwork mod recovery from rom manager it does not do it...also when im in the 3e recovery there is no option for re-install packages...there is restart phone where that is..help?

Did you change the permissions? Rename the original to something like "recovery.bak." You also need to install clockwordmod from the Rom Manager app(get it from the market) After that boot into recovery and select the "reinstall packages" twice, which should get you into green CWM.

I you are rooted and on stock froyo, use SGS kernel flasher from the market. Use it to flash the community kernel v8. That will give you modified 3e recovery, and in my opinion its the easiest method.
PS. It will take about 10 mins to flash this first kernel because it has to change the partitions to ext4.
You can find detailed instructions in gtgs infused v2 rom.

not exactly,
it will give you cwm recovery voodoo lagfix edition and eliminate 3e recovery all together.
3e is stock recovery for froyo and gb on Samsung phones. what I must ask the op is what OS version and what carrier are you on?
edit: if that's a Rogers infuse as I see you are on Rogers then you may need to use a custom kernel to use cwm. take your pick of any gb kernel, they are all built on Rogers sources.

I am a noob to linux however I have been trying to understand it for a year so its starting to make some sense but very complicated .
I have read numerous threads but am having troubles finding the right way to get this to work, so If someone could point me in the right direction I will be very grateful.
I figured it out on my own. Now I can properly reboot into recovery without any error messages.

odin/heimdall flash the root kernel or any other custom recovery 2.3 kernel back to it. the recovery replacement is for froyo. gb keeps the recovery file in the initramfs i believe so it can't be permanantly replaced without extracting and repacking that part of the kernel image.
you should simply install SGS kernel flasher and then flash the InfusionGB-CoreA2.zip kernel ! that will give you CWM. Working everytime for me ^^
