Anybody developing on a Mac? - Galaxy Note II, Galaxy S III Developer Discussion

Anybody cooking ROMS on a Mac that has time to work with a rookie via email, gtalk or whatever to help get me going. I can be very intentional with my questions and your time.

Which device will you cook rom for?

I am using mac by running ubuntu vm in vmware. I tried the pure mac route but ran into too many problems. That was a while ago. Since then, problems with mac<->samsung usb have been fixed, and the latest mac heimdall works. I saw a thread in the last few days were someone was using mac successfully.
When/if you get it working please share or write a guide.

[Q] hi guys noob here!

I just got my g tablet.
I want to root the device and later install a rom I was thinking on robeet`s tntlite
My question is, do I have to install first the 4.2.0. and later the 4.2.5 supplement?
Do I have to root it to attempt rom trials or can be done without rooting? anyway i was thinking to use z4 root.
any advice?
Thanx in advance Im absolutely new to android but Im an ios developer.
Would post a link if I had my tab with me but if you look in the development section there is a thread telling you exact steps to do what you want to. It has all the links for downloads you will need.
Oh this method involves mounting and unmounting partitions instead of using a rooting tool. Its worth doing this way. I felt it taught me more about my device. Good luck and have fun!

Thank you for replying, I was following this article:
How to unleash the power of your g tablet from android police( I cant post links yet)
I will search for the thread you are mentioning but if you can later please post it here I would really appreciate your help.
I recommend this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
HOWEVER... read about the available ROMS first. Check out the features and the caveats. See if Flash is already installed so you can skip a step in that instruction guide. Etc... Etc...
Most importantly... have fun and let us know how it goes ;-)
Edit: FYI... The current crop of custom ROM's come pre-rooted for your convenience. It's no longer a requirement to root the device first.
Thanx a lot bro, you helped me a lot with your reply, I will attempt all this at home since my office is 100% mac.
btw is this g tablet mac compatible? lol sorry for the noob questions
Quetions are good. They allow us to help and learn from each other.
Mac Compatible... Oh, yes. I'm typing this from my MacBook Pro which has a VirtualBox session running linux when necessary for nvflashing ;-) Your gTablet's internal memory can be mounted on your Mac desktop via USB or it can be shared via FTP or AFP using a few free apps from the market. Best of all worlds in my opinion.
Yep that's the thread I was thinking about. Glad someone found you the link.
Exactly what was said before, don't forget to have fun and let us know how it went for you and what rom you decided on.

As already referenced, this was the thread that I used, for my first upgrade.
I would recommend loading CWM as well, to redo your partitions to 2,0
Out of curiousity:
Did your new tablet boot up to a welcome screen with setup questions & an end user agreement or did it present you with a home screen ?
Thanx guys, Yap at the end I decided to went with tntlite 4.2.5
LGcubana
My gtab presented me with a home screen and since the beginning crash after crash! so dissapointing... inmediately picked up a new update and everything went smoothly after that, flash running, angry birds from factory presets and so on but I still wanted to moded the tab so that´s what I did.
Btw any of you guys know of a barscan app for the gtab so i can download apps faster from sites like appaware? I don´t know why but the android marketplace is not letting me install that app. Compatibility perhaps?

[Q] Noob needing help rooting my Sprint Wifi Xoom Tab

I have seen and tried to root my Xoom using the methods already shown on this site. One requires a password that the thread creator won't respond to, another requires USB, Java, and sdk downloads which confused the heck out of me since I am a noob at this. I have the HTC evo and I have it rooted and fairly knowledgeable on flashing roms, kernels and over locking but this is new terretory for me.
Please help me with a simple straight forward tutorial. I would greatly appreciate it.
Do you have a Wifi only Xoom, or Wifi+3g? Which version of Honeycomb is currently on your Xoom?
I think he is referring to Xoom WiFi.. Ironically, Sprint sells WiFi only Xoom

Try looking here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049485
If you are not willing to learn ADB, then you really shouldn't be rooting anything, including the evo.

Make sure you are running ubuntu 10.4 and you can find info HERE and HERE.
So the recipe to start is ubuntu 10.04 (LTS) and the download the source?
Thanks!
Any help with adding root, busybox, deodexing, unsecure boot.img, etc? the basic tweaks i mean..
that would be more than amazing!
what is ubuntu used for when writing roms? would like to know the above as well
ubuntu is used to compile android from source.. ubuntu/mac.. windows i believe also can be used, but more painfully.. so ubuntu FTW! and the android kitchen runs smooth on linux, just tried yesterday and figured out the root/busybox stuff.. just the kernel thing is a little blur yet..

Hi,
I think you can use Heimdall (a linux alternative to Odin for some galaxy phones) on a galaxy note 2. If it doesn't work you can maybe root it via ClockWork Mod (CWM). But Odin Mobile (an app that you can find in the Play Store) is compatible with your phone, so give it a try.
Greets,
Amin

[Q] ARM samsung chromebook: Getting fastboot and adb up and running

Hey
I have gone through a forum thread and it seems there has been progress in getting adb and fastboot up and running on arm based samsung chromebook 3.
please refer: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2157230&page=3
I am working on a project where we would like to get android jelly bean up and running on an arm based processor and run an application designed for this environment.
Any ideas before we purchase the hardware and try it out, if someone has got this working. What were the possible issues we could encounter?
Thanks!
any inputs on this?
Hello Everyone

I know how you feel DUDE. Its like we are all alone and unless you grew up speaking kernel you are gonna have a haaaaahd time.
I have tried so many times.... I just cant get it in the right place. All I care about is getting to fastboot. The Samsung X300 is a very weak machine so theres not much point in loading it up with linux.
Ive dropped begging posts all over the internetz since July. Glad to have met you bro -- lets figure this out.

Yes, I know how to search. Still does not clearly tell me how to properly install the adb into my path. Its that final connection I keep messing up.
