Hi, A short but effective guide for people who want to root their Desire S while keeping HBOOT 2.00.0002 and S-ON. This is what I did with my phone yesterday, but took me a lot of time to figure things out, so I'm writing this for myself and other people.
1) First of all set up ADB and Fastboot. [GUIDE] Easy and simple adb and fastboot setup for newbies (Windows only)
Also download the ROM you wish to install on your Desire S and put it on your microSD card. For this tutorial I choose Reaper v2.1 rom by lowveld.
2) You have to unlock your bootloader first via HTCdev so that you can install EXT4 recovery and custom roms. In the dropdown list select ''All other supported models'' and follow the instructions.
If you successfully finished the HTCdev unlock tutorial, your phone has a unlocked bootloader.
3) We're going to install EXT4 recovery. But first download ''4EXT_Recovery_v2.2.7_RC5.zip'' and extract the recovery.img file to the folder where you installed fastboot and adb. If you followed the tutorial in step 1 the folder will be ''C:\android-tools''
Now make sure Fast Boot is turned off on your phone. Go to ''Settings > Power > Fast Boot'' to turn it off. Unplug your phone from your computer, it's time to turn of your phone and boot into your bootloader.
Press Volume Down Button and Power Button at the same time to boot into recovery. Now connect your phone to your computer and select fastboot.
(Power button to select, Volume Down/Up to navigate)
Go to start->run-> type cmd and press enter. A command prompt will now appear.
Type:
cd c:\android-tools [press enter]
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img [press enter]
Click to collapse
EXT4 recovery is now installed on your phone. Turn off your phone in bootloader menu.
4) Open the rom (.zip file) you downloaded in step 1 and put the ''boot.img'' file in ''C:\android-tools''
If you followed this tutorial correctly, you already copied your desired rom your onto your MicroSD card.
Now we boot into the bootloader again, this time we select recovery.
Go to: wipe | format>and select: wipe data/factory reset (this may take a while), then select wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache.
Go back to main menu in EXT4 recovery and select ''install from sdcard'' select ''Reaper_V2.1.ZIP''. After the rom is installed turn your phone off again.
Boot into recovery, connect your phone to your computer and select fastboot on your phone.
Go to start->run-> type cmd and press enter. A command prompt will now appear.
Type:
cd c:\android-tools [press enter]
fastboot flash boot boot.img [press enter]
Click to collapse
After it's successfully installed, turn of your phone and just boot normally. It may take a while for your phone to boot up.
Your phone is unlocked, rooted and has a custom ROM.
Enjoy
Note: Some new ICS roms require different kind of HBOOT. I use Fallout v5.0.0 without any problems.
Just press the 'Thanks' button instead of saying thanks.

Was thinking about rooting/unlocking but wasnt really sure of myself doing it without bricking it. Most of this guide i already knew but it gives me confidence before making the jump

Why did you temp root at step 2? As soon as you restart your phone it'll be gone.

So it's not permanent? meaning step 2 is unnecessary?
@n0elite
Yeah, if your phone is locked (2. hboot) or s-on (0.98 hboot) if will just give you shell root, useful but not required for what you doing.
this looks promising, i think i'll try it someday
so i'll be root after i finished this procedure, or just temporary?
Finally. This was the missing link in this forum!
I had the intention do write one, but I am S-OFF and cannot verify the steps without going to Stock then doing the steps and then downgrade and S-OFF again. Too many things to do just in the name of a correct tutorial. Anyway thanks I am glad that somebody finally wrote it!
P. S. : please notify ben_pyett to include it in the Index thread

Damn, where did you read to pull the battery? NEVER PULL BATTERY AT RUNNING OR BOOTING SYSTEM EXCEPT YOUR AWARE OF THE POSSIBILITY TO GET A PAPERWEIGHT AND DON'T MIND IT!!
Did really take a look at the recovery? What is written as last line?
Ok, but your phone is off now, if not reboot to bootloader with
adb reboot bootloader
at the command line.
Otherwise start it with vol down and power.
There use the fastboot command to flash the boot.img, if you're lucky it will work.

What rom do you use? Maybe the recovery script forces a restart, sry, but anyways use vol down vol up and power or adb reboot bootloader to force a reboot.
If it's really needed only pull battery in between the small gap after shutdown and boot, but not at running system.
Try it the other way round, first flash the boot.img, afterwards flash the rom.

What did you do before the phone wouldn't boot?
I followed your directions, I installed version Reaper_V2.1'''' I closed, I opened the phone and I gave in "Fastboot", give the command:
cd c: \ android-tools [press enter]
fastboot flash boot boot.img [press enter],
but it says "error: can not load boot.img", if I saw a video where I realize I'm wrong or my phone failed.
Put boot.img in c:\android-tools and then run the command again

Okay, I tried the taco root exploit as suggested here.
Since I'm new to Android, the process was a little vague for me. Finally managed to get it done properly after reading through I really don't know how many pages here on this forum and google searches. Didn't wanna risk a brick, lol.
I've just written down the step by step procedure if someone like me needs the help.
1st off, my device is a Sensation running 2.3.4 OTA stock, unrooted/ untouched and Revolutionary fails to S-off this phone.
Edit: Just got a brand new Sensation Xe where I faced the same problem, no OTA etc (I unpacked the phone), but Revolutionary S-OFFstill fails. Tried the same methode below and it is S-OFF now. Screenshot of the new phone below:
DISCLAIMER
Using the following method might void your warranty.
I am not responsible if following this method results in bricking your phone.
Whatever you do is at your own risk
You'll need the tacoroot.bin file (I got mine from the htcsupertool v3 zip)
ADB set up.
HTC drivers. I used the HTC v 3.0.0.007 drivers.
Copy/move the tacoroot.bin file to a folder and open a command window from there or move it to the Android SDK/ tools folder (my set up) and navigate there from a command window depending on how you have ADB setup.
Run the following adb commands.
Code:
adb push tacoroot.bin /data/local
adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/tacoroot.bin
adb shell /data/local/tacoroot.bin --setup
The phone will reboot to recovery.
Press Volume Up, Volume Down and Power.
Reboot.
Press the Power button once if the screen remains blank (dark).
Wait for boot.
Run the following command.
Code:
adb shell /data/local/tacoroot.bin --root
The phone will reboot.
Run Revolutionary.
Once Revolutionary is successful, reboot.
Run the following command.
Code:
adb shell /data/local/tacoroot.bin –-undo
Done. Go ahead with custom recovery etc. I did not install any custom recovery with Revolutionary as I didn't want to risk anything. Someone better equipped folks might be able to say if that would disrupt the whole process.
I've installed ARHD 6.5.1 XE on this Sensation now, no issues. It's a friend's phone, my own XE is running the same without all this drama )
Note: Shamelessly copied bits and parts from all over the forum and the net. Thanks to everyone here and no offense if something has been taken from someone without acknowledgement.
Warnings and Disclaimers
TacoRoot may void your warranty. This is not an s-off/unlock, but a temporary root method – and an unstable one at that (note, however, that it’s technically a “quasi-perm” root in that your phone will stay rooted after you pull the battery). Your phone will be unstable until the undo parameter is used, and may not fully boot. ADB, however, will come up as root.
If your phone breaks as a result of this exploit, neither Android Police nor Justin Case can be held liable.
Edit: I corrected the command line to undo tacoroot, thanks to mathrania's post below.
Thanks for the guide... just a comment:
Instead of : adb shell /data/local/tacoroot.bin –undo
it should be: adb shell /data/local/tacoroot.bin ––undo
I just died trying the first command
thanks..

I also ran revolutionary while on boot loop and it completed successfully. However after that im now stuck in boot loop and am unable to run the --undo command. I've tried running the --undo command while in boot loop but it dosnt seem to help.
Sometimes it will make it to the wallpaper for a few seconds then just reboot again..... Anyone know how i can fix this?
just some additional info: revolutionary definately worked. It shows S-OFF in fastboot on Hboot 1.17.1111
I dont think im not bricked but i just need some assistance getting things back on track!

Any other ideas?
EDIT: ok i mangaed to get clockwork on the phone and I'm rocking insert coin no worries. Thanks for your reply.
I achieved the unlocked bootloader, at least I believe, per instructions via the HTC website. But I can't seem to be able to flash a recovery or achieve root. I can boot into HBOOT, when I try to click Recovery, it takes me to some page explaining software is not to be distributed, blah blah. Then it just boots up like normal?
I'm afraid I don't understand? Everything i've tried fails, why is that?

You skipped right over the "can't seem to able to flash a recovery."
Please explain in detail the instructions you followed AFTER unlocking via HTCdev.com. This includes files you downloaded, where you put them, how you attempted to flash, etc.
These details will be very helpful. Don't worry, sounds like you're not in any serious trouble at all. Just don't go flashing anything you see.
Also, please post this to the Q&A forum or General next time. This development forum is intended for development posts ONLY (ie. ROMs, Kernels, Radio's, etc). Just a heads up. Welcome to the forums
Aahhh, forgive me!
And thank you for the patience and understanding!
I used the Hasooon2000 toolkit. I got as far as getting to the screen where HTC wants to confirm with me that I do want to unlock the bootloader, I clicked yes, and it rebooted. Then I tried to flash recovery. The CMD prompt will say it was pushed to the phone successfully, but when I try to reboot into recovery, I don't get very far. To my understanding, I can't apply perm root without getting to recovery, but with the bootloader unlocked, why can't I even flash one?

Ahhh, not to stir up the pot here, but you're getting vague again with what's going on. You say "when I try to reboot into recovery, I don't get very far". What do you mean by this? Details are extremely important in helping you. Sounds like you're saying that recovery was successfully pushed, but then I didn't get any details as to what's going on when you attempt to load recovery. Also, which recovery file did you use? Use this one
I'm not trying to get on to your case here, but you've got to be really specific when you say stuff doesn't work, because that doesn't help us diagnose your issue. When your recovery is done flashing, you should be able to access the bootloader by holding Pwr + Vol-Down for like 5 secs, then choose recovery (that or fastboot>recovery....I cant recall if recovery is a main menu item). What happens after you choose that? Mine shows the htc splash screen, with a development message in red, and then it boots Clockworkmod.
No, no, lol I totally understand, I guess I am being vague.
I was going to go into details, but I was at work. Interestingly enough, my phone died, and when I plugged it and let it charge for a little bit, the phone booted right into CWM touch - so odd! So I was like, ok, i've achieved root - well, no, cuz I opened ROM Manager and it says SU couldn't be found.
BEFORE, when I would do what you said I should do, it would take me to the HTC splash screen where it was in red text, some disclaimer about some proprietary information crap, then it would skip recovery and just boot into Android -___-
Let's see if I can replicate booting into recovery now. (What method are you using to flash your recoveries?)
EDIT: Well it looks like I can't get back into recovery. Same thing as mentioned above. I can get to the fastboot screen, but if I click recovery, it takes me to that HTC disclaimer screen, the little loading bar loads then - poof - screen goes blank and Android boots up.
I have the same problem -_-! Can someone help please
The recovery image was flashed succesfully from Hasoon2000's toolkit. But when i go to the bootloader and select Recovery, I get the red warning for from HTC about how this is for development purpose only... then the phone's screen goes black, then it boots into the stock ROM.
Cant flash recovery
Hello everyone.
I have a similar problem. I successfully proceeded with the bootloader, but now I can't install the recovery. It simply wont flash.
I was following the xda tutorial that's in this very forum, but i got stuck: In my desktop i downloaded the needed files (or so I believe), and so i have in my desktop a folder called "carpeta" (random name) with these files within: adb.exe, adbwinapi.dll, fastboot and 3 different recovery images i have tried to flash.
I use mac, so i open the command prompt for mac (terminal) and go to the "carpeta" folder and after that, I type "cd fastboot flash recovery xxxxx.img" (the xxx are the names of the recovery images that i have in the folder, one at a time) but it simply wont flash anything. I attach a screenshot to ilustrate what happens...
Please help me

Guys it works if you flash the recovery manually through the command prompt. I think there might be a bug or something in the toolkit because the manual way worked for me.
Here is what I did:
(I am not a programmer so I can't guarantee this will work for you. Worked for me, but try at your own risk)
-Copied the recovery image to the same folder as abd
-Plugged in the phone with USB debugging on
-Opened command prompt
-navigated to the folder with adb with "cd folder_location"
-typed: "adb kill-server", then "adb devices"to make sure the device was connected
-typed "adb reboot-bootloader" to boot into bootloader
-typed "fastboot flash recovery recovery_file_name.img"
-Select bootloader>recovery using the vol up and down and pwr button
and voila recovery
Hope this helps
I'll give it a shot later tonight on my lunch break.

Make sure that you navigate to the proper folder using the "cd" command.(for example" cd C:\Fastboot ", if your adb and recovery are in that location)
Make sure that the Clockwork Mod recovery file is in the same folder as the adb and make sure that you type the file name correctly
I used these file and put the recovery image inside the folder after unzipping

This actually worked for me. I am rooted, and am now running a custom ROM.
Thanks so much for all your help!
Hey everyone
i seem to have made a very tiny bit of progress here since now i can type the commands and make it start, but only that... starting.
my command box is stuck in a "waiting for device" message that will start nothing, and my phone is just there, untouched.
i never thought flashing a recovery would give me this much of a long headache...
help anyone? how do i make my pc stop "waiting for device"?
Have you tried a different USB cable/port? I had a similar problem but moving to a different port worked.
Sent from my HTC VLE_U
I have the same problem i did everything as in the guide posted here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1583427
But when i flash recovery through fastboot ( fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img) everything goes ok but when i want to boot into recovery i get stuck on the HTC screen.
Than i wanted to go to recovery trough fastboot ( fastboot boot recovery ) i get message cannot load recovery.
If you need more info for help i can provide you guys with the screenshots.
Thanks in advance Nikola.
(Method 1)
Ok so you're trying to put this really cool new custom ROM on your phone and then suddenly, your phone won't start up or go to recovery… well my friends, you have got yourself a bricked phone. The thing you worry about the entire time you're rooting, and flashing your phone, has now become reality. Well, fear no more, for I, have found a way to unbrick your device! after bricking my phone and finding different ways how to do it...
Because we are not able to swap or get the sdcard out from the phone, it makes it difficult on how to add a ROM.zip and re-install. Another issue I found is that CWM will not be able to read the sdcard if you do an adb push ROM.zip /sdcard/ROM.zip or by mounting the sdcard adb shell mount /sdcard . If you have this issue will explain later
So let's get started.
Step 1: Turning Off Your Phone and Reboot to Boot-Loader
Because you have a bricked phone, you can't just hold the power button. So if your phone is not already off then you're going to want to turn off by pressing the volume down + power button until the phone shuts off then turn on to boot-loader by pressing volume down and press for 3 seconds the power button. once in boot-loader select fastboot.
Step 2: Adb push to SD card
I assume that you have install CWM, if you don't you can download it from HERE. Once downloaded install CWM fastboot flash recovery CWM.TOUCH.5.8.3.1.img, where your done go back to boot-loader and select recovery. Once in recovery do an adb push of a ROM, in this example I used "Energy ROM" you can get the ROM from HERE. Once you have your ROM rename ROM.zip and push adb push ROM.zip /sdcard/ROM.zip, you will get a message stating the size of the the push.
If you can't do a push because you got an error message will explain later.
Step 3: Wipe The Phone
Make sure to do a Factory Reset / Wipe before installing ROM
Step 4: Reboot back to fastboot
Once you install the room you will need to make sure you have a boot.img for the ROM your using.
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash boot Recoveries/boot.img
YOUR DONE
If your the unlucky one's that can't do an adb push to the SD card do the following.
- Reinstall STOCK Recovery fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
- Lock OEM fastboot oem lock
- Unlock OEM fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock/Unlock_code.bin
- Reinstall CWM Recovery fastboot flash recovery CWM.TOUCH.5.8.3.1.img
That should fix the problem on how to push back to the sdcard
If you have other methods post them below...
Sticky!!
But this won't work if you flash a wrong radio, will it? I thought that if you flashed a wrong radio, you couldn't get anything done, even not booting into bootloader, because it boots the radio first?
I'll second that this method works. Did for me and is easy to do once you take your time. Also make sure you have all the right files and you make sure to type everything word for word in ADB..
This tutorial already exists as a sticky in the Q&A section:

Nice writeup.
For every new Phone I own, the first thing I do after flashing a Custom Recovery is Making a Nandroid Backup of the stock Rom. If something goes wrong after flashing a bad rom I just restore to Stock rom.
A real life Saver for me.

It worked for me when I bricked my phone and had to find ways how to be able to load a ROM back to the SDcard and reflash it...
This is a combo of a tutorial cannondale wrote and one I wrote myself.
His is stickied in Q&A section, mine is in Android Dev section...
Not sure why this is here lol.

Try to relock your bootloader first.
In fastboot:
fastboot oem lock

Issue
Ok, still running into an issue. No errors when I push, I locked, unlocked, tried everything again. Reset everything, installed fresh CWM, tried it all over...
What's happening is that it's saying it pushed the file over, but I can't find it anywhere after it's done. This happened the first time I installed custom...I just can't remember what I did to get it to work...
Anyone has the link of stock recovery for HTC One S z560e(ville c2)?? i get error 155 when i try to install with RUU.
After i flash the cwm touch recovery I cant boot into recovery... my phone is stuck on the HTC boot logo with the red text underneath. Is it a problem with recovery or should i try install an RUU. My phone is HTC One S villec2 (S3).
Hi, at first i would say sorry for my english
So, i want install on my htc sensation custom rom, so i unlock bootloader on htcdev website, everything gone perfectly
Second step was installing CWM recovery and phone rooting, thats gone good too. Tutorial for CWM and root install i have take from this: theunlockr.com/2012/09/20/how-to-root-the-htc-sensation-on-hboot-version-1-27-0000
In next step i did wire-trick on ControlBear 0.5 beta, but phone don't want to reboot and make JuopunutBear logo, so i try to find 0.6 beta, but i can't found it. I found 0.7 beta, and on this wersion i did wire-trick, i miss a little bit with wire (wait too long) and program send me an error, i must click Enter for exit, and i clicked. From that moment my phone don't want to boot, all time i have JuopunutBear screen. I can go in bootloader, but my recovery don't want to start, so i install recovery and root again and try to restore backup from recovery, but system still don't want to boot.
At this moment i can go to bootloader and i have unlock bootloader with htcdev, recovery and probably root, i haven't s-off. My HBOOT version is 1.27.0000
Please help me, i don't know what i should do. Maybe i still can do wire-trick? I don't know :crying: I tried to find RUU, but two RUU don't want to open, and third send me info that they can't update soft and i should download correct program for update ROM memory.
Please help me!:crying:
Hi.
Run your phone's appropriate RUU, care for the region and the model as well, to be exact. For sensation XE, it has an extra LE in its name.

install 4ext recovery and then enable smartflash then restore the rom backup youve got ..(step #2 and step #3 ..from this guide)
if phone still not booted then do the extra #1 step from the same above guide ...but use the boot.img from the backup you've done (will be available at /sdcard/clockworkmod/backups)
Thanks @ganeshp !!! Phone is booting and android works Thanks a lot :* You're my hero
btw, i used method with flashing my boot.img, becouse restore from 4ext didn't work

Where did u go wrong? Are you s off now?
I'm not on s-off, , becouse controlbear (0.7 beta) send me an error and i must click enter for exit, after exit my sensation don't want to boot. Probably i have waiting too long for second wire "click" on sdcard, and program send error. Now i have unlock bootloader, 4ext recovery and root, i dont know which version of controlbear i need for wire-trick. If you have good version please send me a link to download
Send from my HTC Sensation

I got a link for 0.5beta, I'll pm you incase in case you want to try it (I haven't. Just got it yesterday, havent had a chance)
edit:used the one click tool to root, controlbear worked like a boss, took a few tries with a wire trick, phone rebooted once but no harm done
So if my phone don't want to boot system and stuck on JuopunutBear screen i can unplug my phone, plug in again and still try to do wire-trick, for that moment when phone will have s-off?

you can always try the wire trick multiple times ...even when the phone is stuck at juopunutbear screen.
however if you want ..you can revert back the phone to working condition too (except sdcard) ..controlbear has this functionality too
check troubleshoot point #4 from my soff guide for further details ( link in my signature )
This is the answer for 10 points
This is what i need. Thanks a lot. I will try to do wire-trick again in future (now i know what i need to do when phone is stuck on that screen )
Thanks a lot
Edit, If i have rooted phone, i haven't use temproot.bat ?
Hi, it's me ... again..
I have done wire-trick today, but i have problem I done it, but controlbear send me text that they can't find device after wire-trick, i have unplug phone and try to restart them. I saw joupunutbear screen - again. So first what i have do i opened troubleshot and made 4. a), but phone still stuck on this screen. so i want to go to recovery, but i havent it I have try to flash recovery, but i recieved text that is unavailable or something. So i try to flash boot.img, but i can't do it too I have opened my Bootloader in sensation and i saw that i have ***LOCKED*** and under that S-OFF RL. So if i have ***LOCKED*** bootloader i can't flash anything, right? (boot.img, recovery, itp) I should unlock bootloader again or what? I'm stuck on joupunutbear logo already and have in bootloader ***LOCKED*** and S-OFF (if it's true) Please help me ... again It's possible i haven't root

just remove the temp root with remove bat.file or whatever it is called
Ok, i have used this, but phone still is stuck on joupunut screen.
While i do wire-trick i haven't use temp-root, becouse i had unlock bootloader via htcdev, i had root and recovery - now i havent anything

check only step 2 from here(flashing a recovery)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631861
edit: first do this
flash jb hboot from unlimited.io site(it is unlocked patched)
http://unlimited.io/jbhboots.htm
download the one for sensation(the ics one)
then flash the recovery.img
When I type this:
sudo ./fastboot erase cache

into CMD, they send me text that "sudo" isn't recognizable as command or program Maybe i'm too tired...
EDIT: Okay, i'm so stupid :/ i type that without "sudo ./" and now i have hboot 1.27.1111 and i have flashed recovery 4ext. Now i can make root again and install ROM from SD card like this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2531054 ?
EDIT2: recovery display info that i must do full wipe and microsd card wipe. So i can't restore backup from sd now, right? I must do full wipe with sd card too and install ROM from sd card?

first: if you are willing to flash a custom rom then there is no need to root your current one
all custom roms comes pre-rooted
second: there is no need to wipe your sdcard.where did you see that?
just make a nandroid backup from recovery just in case
then format all partitions except sdcard from recovery
flash the new rom
done
Ok, i have one backup (i made it about 2 weeks ago, when sensation worked normally), so i think i haven't make second. And my recovery is now in safe-mode, so when i wipe partitions it will be normal, right?
Tomorrow i will download Vipers 5.0.0 JB and install it Thanks a lot

While recovery is booting, every times when i open it, it boot from 0, for second i can see something like "can't mound sd" or something.
when boot is done, recovery recieve me text:
"ATTN: recovery is in safe mode this is because the following partition is not accessible: "cache"
Please enter the wipe menu and wipe cache!
If you changed hboot you should choose to format all partitions (except sdcard)
Afterwards please reboot recovery"
And above "reboot now" i can see " ! SAFE MODE ! "
When i go in Power Menu and chose power off, i can see:
"You are currently in safe_mode.
You means that your internal partition are not accessible.
please wipe all partitions and then reboot recovery!
reboot recovery now? "
Yes or No, i can't power off device, i must take out battery.
