[Q] Is it possible to turn the screen off when connected to an external display? - Asus Transformer TF700

I would like to watch Netflix on a TV using the tablet, but the screen remains on at all times. I set the brightness to zero, but the screen is still a bit distracting and I'd prefer to not to waste battery life unnecessarily. I found an app on Google Play called Screen Standby, but it requires root. Are there any other alternatives? I would root my device, but I am on the latest stock JB firmware, so rooting seems complicated. If this is required, what is the latest tutorial on how to root? You would think this would be a feature built-in to the Android OS by now.

Screen Standby (HDMI out + Black Screen FTW!)

As I'm sure many of you know, HDMI mirroring on the Infinity works well, but having two screens on while watching a video or playing a game is distracting.
Screen Standby is a new root app that disables the backlight on your tablet or phone while still allowing touchscreen functionality to remain active. That means while your tablet may look off when outputting to HDMI, you can still use it to pause, change apps, and do whatever you want while saving battery life at the same time. To turn your display back on simply shake the device. Unfortunately the proximity sensor function isn't working at the moment, at least on CM10.
I'm surprised it's taken this long for an app such as this to come along, but I can confirm it works on our infinity and on CM10 as well.
You can find it for free at the play store here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nkahoang.screenstandby
and the XDA thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1934495
And I would suggest you turn on two-stage screen off as that allows you to switch to whatever app you want to run before you go dark. Hope this helps!
Interesting... I've been wanting something similar to this. Think I'll be trying it out once I get my cable.

[Q] Display no longer turns off with HDMI use after update

Stock TF700T, unrooted, etc., 4.2.1
Prior to the update, when I connected to TV via HDMI, to watch Netflix movies, the Tablet's display automatically turned off once the movie started playing. Required no action on my part.
Since the update, the display stays on, and I can't see or find any setting that will change this behavior.
The TV display looks great - no system bar at the bottom or anything - but it is obviously a waste of battery power to keep the display on, it puts unwanted light into a darkened room, etc.
Any way to restore the original behavior, which makes so much more sense?

Battery Problems

I'm using a Nexus 5, its my first Android device, and so my first time rooting.
I rooted yesterday using the Android SDK, and installed TWRP.
The root worked perfectly, and I have tested it. All I have done since rooting (unlocked boot loader at the same time, so I'm clean on stock), is install a few Play Apps like Twitter, WhatsApp and then BusyBox and dSploit.
I haven't added any customisations or anything, and my battery is now awful!

My screen has been on for 50 minutes...
I have brightness on the lowest setting, have turned off vibrate on touch, turned off Wi-Fi, turned off Location, set to use 3G not 4G, set display to turn off after 15 seconds...
Im sure it can't be anything to do with the root, but I don't really know too much about it. Is there a problem with 4.4.2 and battery life?
What else can I do to improve it?
Ideally I'd like to be able to have a max of 3-4 hours screen time, and the device to last for 14-15 hours.
I was easily getting 14 hours before I rooted/updated, but now my battery life has just screwed up.
Why is the OS using up so much?

Click to collapse
Is this not the first charge since you first saw the problem? The Android OS bug occurs sometimes. I would reboot and see how it is on the next full cycle.
sreen may be turning in coz some apps might be asking for root access.
I think you try greenify app and hybernate useless apps, m sure this will help you.

Power management? How do i have it run like a normal android phone.

I don't want to compromise any features to gain a bit of battery. Is there any power settings which get keep things running the way most android phone run?
Also i heard that by default apps will not run with the screen off and that you need to allow apps to do this on a per app basis? Is this correct? how do i get to these options?
For your first question if you set battery to Intelligent, it will use smaller cores for normal usage like web, social media, youtube and such and bigger cores mainly to performance stuff like playing games. Honor got this pretty balanced (got 6hours SoT while watching Twitch for and hour and playing GTA:SA for about half hour)
For your second question. You can disable this feature completely - go to Battery settings in Phone Manager > Protected apps and from there you can select Protect All. This will let all your apps run in background so you wont miss any notifications (also I believe that Marshmallow Doze is somewhat implemented in EMUI too)

How do I turn off display module and then turn on easily?

Hi there's an application which requires you to keep the display turned on to listen songs and play videos, but how do I turn off and on the display module of my phone easily (if possible without adb)?
Or is there any alternative solution for this? I don't want to keep my display on because I need to listen music for hours sometimes.
Im using AOSP EXTENDED ROM 8.1 OS.
Thanks.
