(Q) Google Services Battery Drain - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I've seen in a lot of topics people asking about this but I have never seen a direct answer. Direct your attention to the screen shots.
Is there anything I can freeze in TiBU? I have my DS battery saver to slumber so anytime I lock my phone it goes to deep sleep right away.
Granted my battery life is phenomenal but I feel like it could be better.

Try turning off Google location services.

I keep it off.
Edit;
After looking back at my settings I guess I didn't turn it off last time I reflashed my rom. I'll keep an eye on it and see if that helps. Thanks.

Mine is always on but I turn off all sync. I don't see Google services ever in my top 5. Turning off might help but that might not be the issue.
From the other thread, your battery saver might actually be the problem.

Yeah if I see it again after this charge cycle I'm disabling, I'll keep trying things and will let everyone know what I find.

Device health application

All
Been lurking for quite a while now and have had the ATRIX 2 since the day after launch.
I pay pretty close attention to applications and their battery consumption. Today when checking I found that an app named device health application had been running. Does anyone know what this app is? Have google'd it. It didn't find any info.
Thanks!
Sent from my MB865 using Tapatalk
Thats a good question
It showed that it used 77% of my battery yesterday. If anyone runs across the true name of the app I'd like to know so I can disable it through the package manager.
Sent from my MB865
That's interesting. Its only used 3% of my battery today - so isn't a problem for me yet. However I have noticed of isn't responding to a force stop yet.

It's always been <10% batt usage for me until the other day when I noticed it was up around 15%. I selected it in the batt usage screen and it's battery usage appears to be GPS and not so much CPU. It had the GPS on for 25mins total that day. I find this a bit rediculous and decided to just freeze it with Ti Backup. It's now not contributing to CPU usage, and I don't notice the GPS symbol w/o firing an app that uses it. I also haven't noticed any ill effect yet, but I'd be interested in knowing what this thing does.
I suspect it's a moto app for collecting device stats to aid in trouble-shooting issues, but that's just a guess. I'm not a fan of apps out of my control just firing up GPS at their whim. and no, I'm not willing to go full manual and start GPS myself everytime an app needs to use it. My phone works for *me*, not the other way around.
that's interesting. I haven't seen it on my since the day I posted about it. Didn't notice it doing anything with the GPS. I keep mine turned off unless I need it. Will have to check that one out if I ever see it again.

[Q] What is eating up my battery?

Ok so yesterday and today my battery has been atrocious. 5 hours on IDLE and it went from 100 to 55%. What the hell? Under battery usage it says android OS ~23%, clock ~18% and android system ~22% as the top 3.
Get the app betterbatterystats and see what was keeping your phone awake. It was most likely a deep sleep issue. I would also suggest cpu spy. Goodluck

as ckck says, this app will help you narrow down the problem as to which app it is. Its a paid app but a free dev version is available here on xda. CPUSpy as he also mentioned is an app to check whether or not your phone is going into deep sleep. If it's not, an app is definately keeping it awake, which is your problem.
If you're running the ICS leak go to Settings->Sound and uncheck "Touch sounds" and "Screen lock sound". I did this and it tripled my battery life.
I use 2xbattery app with email push set to 30 minutes. It is a great battery saving. See proof.

I preffer Juicy Defender Ultimate, it does things for you with out much settings, like email push it just pings and sync on it's own, major thing it turn data off, and I found data is one of the biggest battery users
2x battery does the same. I tried to post screenshot on my last post but Somehow xda app will only update jpeg and my leaked ics stores them as png.

Rarely going into deep sleep.

Hey, I recently installed paranoid android v20, (my first custom rom on this phone) and I'm noticing that my phone isn't entering deep sleep very often. Last night I rebooted to refresh everything and get fresh numbers. I plugged it in and put it in airplane mode. And this morning it showed 5 hours in 192mhz and only 1 1/2 hours in deep sleep. (I only slept for 6 1/2) any idea what I can do to increase the use of deep sleep?
More detail: I have my cpu set to 1350mhz max - 192mhz min, with interactive governor, using Kernel tuner.

You can go to settings, developers options, and make sure that " stay awake" is not checked. Because if checked it will prevent device from sleeping. Also check permissions on your installed apps and make sure they don't say prevent phone from sleeping. You can also try the app from the market called " Deep sleep battery saver " it puts the device into deep sleep when not in use. I think this will be helpful for you! Best wishes and hope I've helped you!!

Stay awake is off. And I tried that app before and I'm not sure if it worked. But I'll try it again. And how would I find out which apps have "prevent phone from sleeping" other then checking each app one by one? And, other then uninstalling, how would I disable it? Thanks.

You could install BetterBatteryStates.
It monitors 'wakelocks' which keeps the phone awake. You might find the app/settings to blame.

I remember now why deep sleep battery saver doesn't work for me. It turns off wifi at home, yet I need wifi for groove ip phone calls. So can't use it. I'll check out better battery stats, maybe that'll fix it. Thanks.

Okay, last night I charged my phone and left it unplugged with better battery stats monitoring. This morning I look and find a 22% drain after 10 hours, 9 hours in deep sleep, 1 hour awake. I checked and 44% of partial wake locks was Google maps. Why? Am I being tracked? Sheesh! So I used link to SD to freeze it until I need to use it. (which isn't to often as I primarily use Waze for navigation, maps is mainly for bus directions.) hopefully that will increase my battery life. Thanks!

Yeah okay, maps wasnt the problem its googles location service thats always checking where i am. So I disabled it. Hopefully that will fix the problem.

I have a similar problem, that is when I look at battery status plot under settings sometimes I see that the phone NEVER goes into sleep mode (always awake).
I installed BetterBatteryStatus and I see a lot of time spent under "partial wakelocks": mainly AlarmManager and Event Log Service. Any hint on how to solve?
Thank you in advance.

The guy who made the app is very responsive and a lot of the people there will help you. so, make a dump of your partial wake locks and submit it in the thread. you should also read through it a bit to understand others problems which may be similar to yours. see thread link below.

google search would normally be up there, it also includes the launcher plus other things. you use googles launcher dont you? the play store and calandar storage is being used too often.
Did this issue appear in the last weak or so? I'm encountering the same issue, it drives me nuts.
Using same apps as usual, no gaming and still my battery drain is far worse than before. I have even disabled Google Now and Location all together.
Installed GSAM now to analyze the stats, nothing unusual in Android battery stats compared to the stats I had before.

I wouldn't necessarily say my drain is bad, but yeah google play services did start showing up for me the past two days. I think it might be because of the google search update. Could be from the parking location feature.

the play services showed up on mine as well, 2 or 3 days ago. my phone normally sleeps better than a knocked out baby, but since the play services showed up, i see it wake every few minutes on my battery usage chart(draining some extra battery). been changing my permissions not allowing anything to wake my device, but it still does.

It could be that mine doesn't usually sleep that well that I'm not seeing a huge difference. Speaking of permissions though, I actually made it so G+ can't wake the device because I don't use it, and it still wakes it sometimes.
Try gsam from play store. And if rooted....gsam root companion as well.
Do a full charge, 100 to low....no reboots. Then print a few gsam screens. The main screen, app screen, and in app screen.... Click the drop down and screenshot time held awake and kernel Wakelocks. Also, maybe "screen" screen and radio screen.
I know its a lot, but between all these your issue should show up.
Tho....if you have terrible signal ever while on data....that will crush your battery.
Good luck!!
Yes I have noticed that now my Google play services is right at the top. I might as well try a placebo and do battery calibration. Fingers crossed lol

You're battery calibrates every time you charge it. No need to do anything else.
I'm noticing more than the normal amount of "suddenly my battery is draining" threads. Seems to coincide with the update to Google Search. I also noticed my battery draining itself with nothing being reported in the battery page last night but a reboot put an end to it as usual.

Massive drain with no wake locks

Hey all
I had a wake lock trigger that was draining my battery so I decided to try and find what was causing it. I turned off all background sync and disabled GPS. I charged my phone to full and then let it drain over night. As you can see in screen shots... Massive drain occurred with no visual signs of the cause. Anyone have an idea?

Did you get any shots of the Kernel Wakelocks and Partial Wakelocks screens in bbs? That's where you would see the culprit(s). Also, do you ever do soft reboots? Some people (including myself) have experienced increased battery drain with no visible wakelocks after soft rebooting. Doing a full reboot seems to fix it.

I've disabled wifi and it drained to dead. Going to recharge to full and see what it does off wi-fi. What could I do to see why/if wi-fi is killing it?
You can see it is draining it in your screen shots. Maybe you didn't fully disable the background Wi-Fi usage. "scanning always enabled" for example

Doesn't look like its disabled correctly. Your screenshot shows nearly 8 hours Wi-Fi.
Maybe there is a bug in your settings data.
Not sure if you're rooted or not but maybe a backup / wipe is the best course of action

ahh, thats a little better, but itll drop a little more with use. while 20 is a little high, id still classify as normal. really anything up to 20% is normal. typically, after a full cycle, i see android os between 9-15%. but it would all depend on exactly how you use your phone.

i see that chrome(and chrome sandbox) is taking a huge amount of battery for very little use. 21% together, just to respond to xda..
Install system monitor from play store and check CPU freq and number of CPU's online while screen on.

As said above....use the phone normally and check when its almost drained. It will surely be much lower.
If location is on...it will probably be higher than 10% I'd guess. If so....completely normal.
