usually you will get the black screen of death when:
-after a phone call
-during/after charging
-when hitting the power button to turn off or turn on your screen.
do you think that the gingerbread launcher is causing this problem?
Ive read on other forums on different phones that the launchers were causing the same problems on their phone as well and when they switched launchers, it all stopped.
is this a reasonable explanation?
Nope. It happens to my wife on GO Launcher as well.

Only SOD I ever come across is the call SOD. That happens when running Trinity kernel on CM7 or CM7 based roms. Morfics updated Trinity kernel I assume has fixed the SOD as I haven't come across it while running CM7's nightly 199.

This is when your phone goes on permanent "sleep" as in your screen wont turn on. Only way to turn it on is to do a batt pull and reboot.

i use 2.3.7 eaglesblood running the trinity kernal and knocn on wood no problems at all. Hope i dont get that phone disease.
The kernel is the problem. I've said it a million times. Its why CM7 based roms don't do this and those with custom kernels. My Asus transformer did this (tegra 2) until a custom kernel came out.
Change the kernel and fix the SoD.
LG G2x - 2.3.7 CM7
Asus Transformer - 3.7 Revolver OC/UV
Black Screen of death
I recently flashed EB 2.3.7 / 2.5 (runs amazing by the way) but have one small issue. When charging my phone at night it goes into perm. sleep mode for the last 3 nights. My wake up call never goes off . I read somewhere it may be kernel related, so I flashed faux .46 hoping that would resolved sleep issue. It has not, anyone else have any insight?
Thanks.
That happens sometimes or stock ROM.

Hold the power button down for a long time. After about 30-45 seconds, something will usually happen. Sometimes the home screen will flash on for a second and then go black again, sometimes the home screen will come on but will be in a frozen state and won't accept input, and sometimes the screen will come back on normal. This will allow you to avoid a battery pull maybe a quarter to a third of the time you get an SOD.
When I unlock my phone (as in push the unlock button) the screen remains black but lightly lit. The bottom four buttons remains lit when the screen is touched. Currently I'm using Eaglesblood 1.5 Rom with latest Trinity 1.1 GHz. I tried using the latest CM7 Kangs and the stable 201 rom with both trinity and faux with and with out overclock and the same thing still happens. Even with a clean wipe it still happens. Currently I have Juicedefender, AdAway, KeyboardManager Launcher, Go Launcher (have used ADW and ADW Ex) running. I have advanced task killer as well but it's not set to autokill.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do to remedy this problem? If not i'm stuck with the usual battery pull each time the screen goes black. Also I don't think it's a sleep of death because the phone is not frozen as the touchscreen and side buttons are responsive. It should also be noted that the battery is NOT hot when the screen is black.
Also, I'm using an overclock widget that's set to 432000-1100000 screen on, and 432000-750000 screen off. I have tried varying the frequencies too. Should I change my values?
Try uninstalling juice defender. I had issues with a similar app.

Overclocking can be handy, but if you set it too high or overclock your phone too much, it could damage the phone itself. I uninstalled my "SetCPU" once I learned that. However, it could just be that there is a hardware fault within the phone that is causing the screen to be black. Maybe the LCD or backlight?
Happens to me too sometimes on both weapon and cm7.2.
I just do a battery pull and hopefully it doesn't happen soon again.
Uninstalling juicedfender seemed to have fixed it for me thanks so much!

i know there is a setting to use the volume rocker buttons as unlock buttons, but that does not always work, but besides that is there anyway on the g2x to lock the screen but not have to use any button to unlock it? any app that will let you swipe a pattern to unlock the phone when the screen is off?

How would this be possible? If the screen is off, you can't use it, and thus you can't input anything, and if you can't use any buttons, then there's no way you can unlock it. What are you thinking about, voice recognition?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA
no, i still want the phone to lock, i just dont want to have to push any buttons to get it to unlock, for the screen to come back on.
for example, i had a nokia nuron that had a slide switch on the side that would lock the phone, it turned the touchscreen off so you didnt accidentally start something. but it also had a screen timeout that would just blank the screen, then you could touch it and it would come back on without having to use the slide switch
i want to blank the screen without locking it. turning off screen lock you still have to use the button to turn the screen back on
I'm speechless!

This would also cause another problem. The screen being blank but still active would kill the battery really quickly.

well thats true, but it did work like that on my nokia. but really how much more battery would it use if the screen blanks but doesnt sleep? not anymore than if i was using it, probably even less
oh well, guess its just wishful thinking
How can you lock something, and use nothing to unlock it?
For example, you use a key to lock your door, you must use a key to unlock it. Or, you can leave the door open (leave the screen blank), but risk getting robbed (battery drained). I'm sorry if the analogy is bad, what you're asking for is ridiculous.

ok, i think what im doing is confusing blanking the screen with locking the phone, 2 different things. im just concerned that button is gonna get a lot of use and wish the volume rocker wake would work better. oh well
thanks for everyone's input, was just hoping
Blanking the screen like it reduces the brightness after a while? If so, there might be an app for it, but it will definitely reduce your battery greatly.
Either way, don't worry about the button. You probably won't have the phone that long, or you'll break something different.

So I am studying and taking notes on papyrus when all of a sudden screen goes black.
And it's not like it went to sleep mode because if I hit the power button it makes a sound but does not turn the screen back on.
When I click the second time it turns the screen on, as if I turned the screen off and on while it was black screen.
Has anyone experienced this?
So far I have had this only happen while taking notes on Papyrus, I have 30min set to turn of screen and this happens during my note taking...
Also I am using GMOD SPen, to turns of capacitive sensor. -Maybe it could be the problem?
The only input I can provide is that under the same circumstances as you, ( GMD to turn off capacitive touch) and using papyrus, I had no such issues.
Something I feel I should share though, is that the spen latency is greatly decreased in papyrus on a custom ROM such as baked#8 but you lose the Samsung features.
Just my 0.02
Regards
Jack
What about Android Revolution HD 5.1?
I was having serious latency problems earlier but that was due to 2d gpu acceleration.
Once I disabled that I still see some lag, but it's much more tolerable.
Should I try the rom you mentioned, is the latency really that good?
So far, the least latency I've seen was with software called "write" although it has a lot of useful features Papyrus is still my favorite.

Well, if you are comfortable with taking a cwm/twrp backup the you can try it for yourself
I noticed a great deal of difference personally.

Jack
I've actually had the exact same issue, although I use LectureNotes: I can be taking notes from anywhere between 2 minutes and 30 when the screen suddenly goes dark (but not off). Pressing the power button turns the screen off and another power button press brings you back to you note-taking app.
I thought this was an issue with LectureNotes' auto-saving feature, but after seeing this thread, I'm thinking it's system-related (software or hardware).
Anyone have any insights into why the screen randomly goes dark while using the S-pen?

I have had the same thing happen to me while using " Note Anytime ".
I'm using the app and the screen goes completely black, wait 3 seconds or so and the screen comes back on.
I'm using the new B3 stock ROM.

I noticed that I am getting this while using the s-pen.
This does not apply to just papyrus, it just randomly happens.
Please let me know if I should return this to Samsung as I only have 90 day warranty on this refurbished note 10.1
Do you have auto brightness selected? I never have this problem when I use manual brightness but notice it when I use auto brightness.
I just open a topic about this before I notice this one.
I get this problem also, I had this with a few different apps.
And i use auto brightness.
I will try contacting samsung to here what there have to say

I've the same problem.. no rooted, original 4.1.2 galaxy note 10.1.
somebody said that would contact Samsung: have you any additional information?

I do have the same problem (with LectureNotes, but this is the only pen-focused app I use). Independently of auto-brightness, this should not happen. Any news from Samsung?
My infuse is randomly turning off (not bootlooping). No particular time of the day. It is not critical but very annoying. Almost evertime I need the phone quickly, it appears off.
Currently running [ROM] 4.2.2 - Jellybean - AoCP 5.6 - The Collective - Final and it appears fine. I am also using an extended battery and though the case back was loose, so I checked that and put in a small wad of piece of paper as a filler to pack the battery in a little more and also cleaned all the terminal connections between battery and phone.
Just wondering if anyone else is having this issue and what to do to correct it?
yes i think its a pretty normal issue for a Infuse. Mine was doing that when i was running Froyo. Now it just reboots.

Reboot is the power button issue (most of the time). This one likes to turn off. Since I padded the case with a little wad of paper, no turn offs but I suspect, now that I said it, it will start turning off again...LOL.
I've had issues with the phone mysteriously turning off ever since running JB. Maybe ICS too. I don't recall ever having an issue with 2.2.
We have five infuses in my family....3 on Froyo and two on GB. I am the designated troubleshooter. (geek)
We have occasional reboot, often during heavy use. I'm not sure I've ever seem them turn off...if it has happened, it's not often.

Its the power button. Lots of people have the issue. What I recommend is upgrading to a rom (Beanstalk for example) and in the settings have the volume buttons also turn on the screen and then download a remapper that you can change the power button

You sure about that? wouldn't power button issues making the phone restart rather than simply turn off?
I guess if the power button did not work at all and simply was non-responsive the phone could be on and you'd never know it for sure, but at least in my case I know I've missed phone calls when it's off so i dont think that is the case.
I don't think it is the power button issue. It randomly turned off, it did not just reboot. Since I added a piece if paper between back and battery, it has only turned off once. Prior to that it was turning off a couple of times a day.
