Surface Pro Hard case? - Microsoft Surface

Trying to figure out what people have on their device.

VaporMg. Vapor-deposited magnesium coating on an aluminum frame. Dark matte color looks classy, feels great on the fingers, and adds surprisingly little weight. Very durable, though; it can take a drop onto concrete from three feet or so with just a scratch that only slightly mars the aesthetics; the case wasn't actually damaged.
Hell, with the Surface RT, somebody had one fly off the roof of their car at freeway speeds and then get run over, tossing it into the air again. There were dents and scratches, but the case was still intact and there was no functional damage to the tablet at all. VaporMg is some seriously tough stuff.
You can get thicker, heavier cases, but I don't really see much benefit.
However, this topic (like many other things), has already been discussed. Please use search before posting!

That's a great story, I'm looking it up now. I work in some extreme environments and worry about it.
Oh and I did search. I think one day we may have a better forum/topics area for our Q&A's that would definitely help.
Rodeo been there...

The surface is hardly a cheapy plastic android tablet. Its pretty much a block of metal with a screen. Hence why its so heavy compared to the competition
Pretty sturdy device. Made a hell of a bang in john lewis when I knocked it over, nearest assistant just laughed when he saw me worrying about if I had damaged it (I get paranoid over things that arent mine and the possibility of breaking them) and mentioned that the same unit I had knocked over had already had a meeting with the floor twice on the same morning they set the thing up in the first place.

If you're either real paranoid about the possibility of damage or work in an environment where there's a really high risk of damage, then getting a case makes sense I suppose.

Also, in case you missed the joke: VaporMg is what Microsoft calls the way they make the shell of the Surface tablets (RT and Pro). It's not an external case. It is absurdly sturdy though, much stronger than the chassis on an iPad or most Android tablets.

Might be a bad idea considering there's no surface case that leaves area for the vent and then again, as hot as the surface gets, it might melt/burn a hole in your case.

Still nothing? My Surface is suffering daily minor scratches and the skins don't hold up well. I just wish there was something that could clip to the back.

Still wanting something here as well, had a cheap "leather" one for my RT, the Pro is thicker though so I need a new case :/

To be honest, I never had this problem when my skin. I also kept it in a slip case when I went out. I used this as my skin and I JUST took it off a few days ago to exchange my pro. After I took it off, it looked like I just bought a brand new pro. No scratches at all. Mind you, this pro slide across a concrete floor on it's back with the skin on a few times.

Cases / Shells - what're you getting / reviews:

Ultimately I settled on the trident case, pictures in this post. Thanks to gtny930 for finding it for us.
There are some other good case recommendations scattered through the thread, as I get the time I will source them up here for easier reference.
--------
Hey all, i've been searching amazon off and on for cases for our wonderful device, and finally pulled the trigger on one:
Link here
Says it's by HTC, and I ordered from BlueMall, at $0.32 I couldn't not get it...
Rubberized case, two pieces to fit the slide function, looks like a winner.
I doubt it'll be as good as an otterbox as far as protection, but a buddy of mine has an otterbox for his Inspire 4G - and suffers from serious overheating problems. Since our phone already suffers from that with the stock battery i'm gonna pass otterbox by on this phone. (Anker 1900 battery solved overheating problems for me)
Anyways, at less then $3.50 shipped, seemed like a fantastic deal.
Meantime, I have a screen protector and bodyglove on it now, which seems to be a good temporary fix until some proper protection was available. Love the glove, but to me it's only a temporary solution.
What're the rest of you doing for a case or protection for your phone? I'd love to hear about it.
ArmorSuit and HTC Messenger
I got this:
http://www.amazon.com/ArmorSuit-MilitaryShield-Protector-T-Mobile-REPLACEMENTS/dp/B0058XMYDU/ref=sr_1_3?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1314661800&sr=1-3
I posted "customer pics" of what is looks like on my phone too at Amazon.
I'm coming from the G1 and was used to the G1 sleeve so I also bought this:
http://www.amazon.com/HTC-Messenger-Pouch-HD2/dp/B003DZ13OG/ref=sr_1_1?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1314661896&sr=1-1
It's a nice fit and doesn't stick out the top.
As a side note.. I also bought the case you posted. I like it but it won't fit over the ArmorSuit and I really like how the suit looks and feels on the MT4GS. The phone with suit fits well in the pouch...good combo in my opinion.
Found this on Ebay. Still waiting for it (and MT4GS) to come. =[
I'm not allowed to post links yet so just put a dot in between.

MT4GS Cases / Shells
The rubberized hard Body Glove shells offered by T-Mobile (and sold on Amazon, eBay, etc...) are bulky and are missing holes for the microphone above the camera lens. I ended up buying the full body Invisible Shield and it looks great. The only problem is that they didn't include a piece for the bottom front of the phone (under the buttons and around the touchpad). I can put a hard case over the shield if I want, for extra protection or to just change up the look.
I have the solid black case. Just some things to note. First, the back piece is very tight, and I don't think it will ever fall off. However, when removing and replacing the cover, the clips can easily scratch your phone. Second, one or two clips may not actually "clip" to the phone, but rather just get stuck near the top so it still holds from pressure. This really isn't noticeable, but it leaves indents from the pressure on the phone's case. In addition, the clips scrape up against the backside of the screen when sliding up the phone, and over time, start leaving a very noticeable mark. I corrected this with a just a strip of tape over where it was scraping.
The protector for the sliding part of the phone was a bit of an issue. It clips very tightly to the phone, but the clips scrape a lot against the edges of the phone next to the keyboard. In addition to making it a little more difficult to slide the phone, it leads to wear overtime (noticeable wear actually started in less than a few hours of normal use for me). I corrected this by actually cutting off the clips, and using double sided adhesive to stick that part of the case on. It doesn't scrape anymore, but at the same time, it just doesn't look good as the case doesn't properly hold together.
I don't really see how much of this can be fully fixed. I used to own a G1, and I didn't notice the issue of cases scratching the phone until it was too late, but I was able to notice it on my MyTouch. I'm hesitant to go for the BodyGuardz. I had one on my G1, and though it was nearly invisible protection, and protected 95% of the phone, I ended up dropping my phone and it landed on a sharp rock on part of the 5% that happened to not be covered (which ironically actually are the corners of the phone, where it is very likely to land on).
I'm actually a fan of the body glove case. I'm just waiting for something with more clearance because of the anker battery. I've heard goods things about the otterbox, but it is kinda bulky.

I was going to edit in my response about the case I got in the first post - but after this one I quoted I need say not much more.
I really want to like the case, it feels nice and looks good on the phone...but it makes it too much of a pain in the ... to get the back of the case off.
I didn't realize how often I pop the back of the phone open to swap out memory cards until I put the case on.
It lasted on my phone for about 3 hours before I took it off...and it scratched one corner of my phone when I did it. Scratch isn't bad, and it'll probably buff out over time, but it's the first damage the phone has suffered - ironically from the thing that was supposed to prevent this.
If you are never going to pop open the back of the phone to get to the memory card, and you don't mind the backside of your screen-half of the phone getting scratched up when you slide it open - then this is a pretty decent case.
I think the scratching the back of the screen part can be solved by using a knife to cut a sliver off the part that sticks op, then maybe using a small piece of electrical tape to cover that clip.
I like it, I want to like it, but I can't use it - I take the phone apart too damn much for a case like this to be practical.
I'm on the lookout for a gel-type case now. Think that'll be the perfect solution. If anyone finds one, please mention it here.
I got the black cheap case today. After reading the reviews I knew better than to just throw it on there. So I took a small metal file that I have, and proceeded to shave each clip down just a little. After a few trials I got the clips shaved down enough that they all fit and are not pressing against the bottom of the screen hard enough to scratch it.
The coating on this case was not really rubber. Its more of a dusted flat black. It's not slick to the touch, but it doesnt grip like the rubber of the phone.
The phone still fits into the generic style T-mobile mount. But its not as secure as without. I can turn it upside down and give it a light shake without coming loose. So hopefully it will be fine.
I got my psychedelic cover and I'm not very impressed with it. It makes the phone very bulky and awkward to hold (maybe because of my small girly hands -_-).
I find taking the back cover off particularly stressful because I'm scared I'd rip the screen off the keyboard.
Protection wise I haven't dropped my phone yet to see what kind it would provide but I'm guessing it wouldn't fall off the phone if dropped.
Haven't seen any dents or scratches caused by it.
I think I'd prefer it if it had a more rubbery feel as the texture is kind of smooth and slippery.
Overall, I'm satisfied with it but I wish I could figure out a way to take off the cover without the fear of destroying it. Haha.

Quick question - in the pictures you uploaded to Amazon the phone back and sides seem to have a checker pattern. Is that pattern due to the protector?
The otterbox exists for this phone? Or you speaking generally about the otterbox product line?

Yes, it's a woven "carbon fiber" pattern. I took the pictures at angles where the light shows it more clearly. I think it looks nice and provides a "non-slip" surface as well without adding any bulk to the phone when you want to use it, which I personally prefer.

Thanks for linking this and posting the pics on Amazon., I'm going to order one today.
Thanks. I ordered one and installed it yesterday. The front and back went on great. I had more trouble with the sides but that is because I am not the most deft person around. There are a lot long thin pieces but MT4GS has a lot of moving parts. The phone looks great from the front. But the back has a bubble or two - again my clumsiness.
I wonder how long Otterbox will ignore this phone? Annoying....
Meanwhile, this HTC shell is gettin it done. Only complaint is that its not Otterbox.

That's about the same thing I got that I posted about before - just mine is in black.
I know I said a few posts back that I wasn't going to use it, but I had to do something to try to keep it safe.
I've been using it for a few days now, and while I have my gripes, I suppose it's okay.
I got tired of not being able to put it down anywhere, for fear of scratching the camera lens. This case sits further down then the lens, so it isn't the thing the weight of the phone rests on.
Before, i'd have to find something soft to put it down on everywhere I went, which was annoying. I wouldn't put it in my pocket, because they are always full of dust and whatnot - that little grainy stuff gets into the phone and I didn't want that.
Now, with the case on, it doesn't fit in my belt holster anymore - so I have to put it in my pocket or carry it. Desperately seeking another solution but coming up short.
What i'm thinking about doing is drilling some holes in the back of the case, and attaching a belt clip to the hard case shell itself.
So now i'm looking for either a belt holster or a clip I can attach to the hard case itself. Whatever ends up happening, i'll get some pictures and put 'em up here.
What I really, really, really, really want is a soft-rubber case, like a gel case of some sort that can absorb shock - not some hard plastic thing.

Can you 2 that got this case tell me if it fits OK? I hate cases that feel like they are going to fall off after they are on...does this one do that? Specifically when you slide the keyboard up with your thumbs does the front part of the case feel like it would fall off because of your thumb pressure?
Just wanted to be sure it was somewhat well constructed...the $5 price tag just has me concerned.

No, it's fine. I've dropped the phone twice and the case hasn't come off. And it certainly isn't about to come off from handling/usage of the phone. It fits snug. Supposedly its made by HTC, if that means anything. The case does it's job without problems.
Just waitin for Otter.....
Any body have a silicone case? Or one of these?

It fits snug, coming off accidentally isn't a problem. Both the top piece and the bottom piece are secure, normal - or even some exaggerated abnormal - use won't knock it off.
The longer I use the case the more it grows on me, I really like the silky feel of it. There have been a few situations already where having a case protected the phone - I haven't dropped it and hope I never do, but since it's becoming a portable video game system/controller amongst other things it can't be without one.
I suppose you could do far worse then this case, but i'd trade it for a gel-type rubber case in a heartbeat. Hard cases don't protect from shock damage.

Never posted here b4.

Hey so I wanted to know does this phone have any creative cases. If so can provide links and pictures

Here we definitely differ - when I got my first doubleshot it was the first case available. I picked one up but really didn't like it. No shock absorbing, tends to scratch the outside edge of the device when putting on or taking off...
Then moved up to the trident case when it came available. Absolutely love it. Trident has shock absorbing springy goodness, plus was pleasantly surprised to find dust filters where speakers/mics are.
...but anymore my doubleshots run around in their birthday suits.
I got a silver one ( thanks yogi! ) and put my black backplate on it. Just looks damn sexy.
No cases allow it to show off it's beauty, so I just take really good care of it.
The black one, my first smart phone ever, sometimes is naked, sometimes wears the trident.
I don't know if a better case can be found then the trident - but it does have some drawbacks. Most notably being the usb port and headphones jack are exposed.
I hate those hardshell cases with a passion though. Nice to know someone likes them, different people like different things.
I know what you're saying. I noticed a small scuff where the last two clips connected a couple of months after I first put one on. It wasn't too long ago I saw my first Trident case and they look like a really durable form of protection. My hardshells aren't nearly as good although they do protect it from scatches overall. I'm alot like you in respect to how much I baby this phone though and have only dropped it once since last November when I got it. Luckily it was in my rubberized Tmo case at the time even though it was on the carpet in my office. Not padded like the trident but it does have some small spongy strips inside to kind of support it and reduce shock.
I carried it a couple of times "naked" but I was always kind of freaked out about having nothing at all on it. But I will say this....It's a BEAUTIFUL phone that is a shame to have to cover with anything. But....I may be a bit prejudiced.
I haven't used a case since I dumped my iPhone 3GS three years ago.
My phone spends it day either on my desk or in my pants pocket. (Back pocket for jeans, or front pocket for slacks.)
I have had three phones in the interim; but each new phone was an upgrade, not a replacement for a broken phone. And, yes, I've dropped all three onto concrete multiple times. but so far the only damage has been a dented corner or nicked finish.

Case for kids

I know there have already been posts for cases for the Surface but I couldn't find the info I needed on here or the great Google.
Anyone have suggestions for a case for kids? Specifically the 1-3 year old crowd. I know the Surface on it own is very durable and would be fine for my use and could probably hold up to drops from the little guys height but I am worried about liquids (spills, drool) and mysterious other substances that usually are sticky. HAHA
He usually only uses it under supervision so ideally some sort case or sleeve that is water resistant and has a clear cover for the screen would work. He uses it once in a while so low cost wold help and fitment is not a big deal since I would only put it in the case to give to him.
' Boys got to have Yo Gabba Gabba on the go ya know.3
cases for the surface are scarce at best. all i've seen is a bunch of flip cover style cases or just carrying puches. You aren't going to find anything like otterbox/etc. with these, I've been trying to locate similar ones myself due to my job environment.
I will speak for the durability though. Mine slipped while walking down a building hallway and bounced and skid about 10+ ft and had no major damage.
If it's for the PRO, I'd drop the thought of getting a sleeve. The PRO has venting around the back and would be a nightmare if you stuck it in a case like they make for iPads and android tablets.

[Review] Boxwave Book/wallet case

Hey everyone, I'm back with another review. This case caught my eye and I had to own it...immediately. The first case that I actually *wanted* to own. Honestly it wasn't perfect based on the pictures. It is a flip case made in the style of a book. Bookbinding is one of me hobbies and I thought that it was very fitting. So, here is my review. [EDIT] I must have misread the page, I read it was genuine leather, but it is leatherette, and that is why it smells so terribly.
Amazon Link: Boxwave book case (leatherette)
PRO's:
It fits nearly perfectly
Provides adequate protection for the body/screen with one flaw (see cons)
It has enough space for 6 cards (doubled in each pocket) and space behind the cards for a few folded bills.
CON's:
Smell. holy mother of god was this smelly when I took it out of the plastic bag. I choked a little and had to let it air out outside for a day before it was bearable to use in the house. (yes, that bad) and it still has a scent.
Volume. While it doesn't add much weight at all for the size of the phone and case, it does add a lot of thickness. Though it does look exactly like a book, so I guess that is expected. Might be more of a casual case for use in a backpack or purse, so maybe not a con, for you but for me I use my phone in my front pocket.
The card slots are made of something other than leather and it left greasy marks on my xtremeguard screen protector. Not sure if it was because I left it outside over 24 hour period or if that is how they are in general. Your choice.
The volume and lock buttons are a little cramped, though the case holding the phone in place is actually really thin and easily pressed still. Just something to note.
Overall I would say the my desire to own this case has given me a little favoritism in my review. I honestly LOVE how this looks and wish more companies would make them. A really unique design for this unique phone. If you love having something that 90% of the people owning a Galaxy S4 won't have ever heard of, then this case if for you. Everything works nicely and is cut nearly perfectly. a solid 4*/5* for this one for me. Photos and *maybe* a video. I'm just getting started with reviews and I am not use to talking to a camera instead of typing reviews. But tomorrow photos will be uploaded and posted. (batter dead on camera!)
I forgot the pictures! :victory:
Review update: I love the way this case looks as I have said in the previous post, but I want to add that the fact that you cannot use a plastic screen protector on your phone without modifying the case. For this alone I would give the case a new 2*/5* It just isn't worth the problems...but it does look awesome...
I had to take the pockets out of the case because of a problem with them sticking to my screen protector which screwed up two of them before I found out the reason behind it was the adhesive they used to keep the leather attached to fabric inside on the actual pocket.
you can see the line of adhesive here.
Problems with the case that holds the phone on. It has cracked in the upper right and bottom left corners and I have not dropped the phone, either in the case or out, there is no reason for it to be breaking yet. Waste of money I think. I'm going to be sending an e mail to box wave tonight.

Did you get a response? I was looking at one of these myself because I want a good wallet case with the clear space for the ID, and those are hard to find.

Otterbox Defender

I'm thinking of replacing my current Samsung Book Cover case with the Otterbox Defender series case on my Note 8. My experience with the Defender series is great, it's a great case on smaller devices but I want to know what it's like on this device. This particular case has a built-in hinge, sleeve, and screen protector. If anybody is using/has used this case, please let me know how it is.
Here's a link: http://www.otterbox.com/Galaxy-Note-8-Defender-Series-Case/sam2-galaxy-note-8,default,pd.html?dwvar_sam2-galaxy-note-8_color=20&start=2&cgid=samsung-galaxy-note-8-cases
Best investments I made for my Note 2.0 and my Note 8.0. I got the glacier color to match my phone case. The protector sleeve is actually pretty nice. Sorry I am at work and can't post photos. When the tablet is in my day bag and with the protector over the screen I am 100% sure that nothing witll happen to the screen. The hinge is actually in the "sleeve" and allows the tablet to be stood up straight or at an angle for whatever view you prefer. Someone mentioned that there is no SD card accedd but I bought the Samsung USB adapter that plugs into the power cord slot and I run my 1 TB Passport external drive off that to watch movies, view and save documents and even listen to over 10000 songs I have saved on it. Only down side to that accessory is that it SUCKS the battery life. If I could find a splitter where it is charging and using the TB drive I will be set. The case is a lil wider than the Gumdrop and a few ounces heavier but its not too noticeable.Other than not being waterpoof this is by far the most protective case out there for the Note 8.0. I went from the Samsung "book" cover type, then bought the Gumdrop case thinking that was the best one out there but if I would have just waited about 3 weeks I could have saved $65 but oh well. So if anyone wants either one I will sell them dirt cheap. I would say buy it because you will not be disappointed.
Cheers
I just received my OBD today! I was so excited to get it installed onto my 8...the thing is like a virtual tank now!
Had official bookcover on it previously. I would have never bought one but it was a freebie with my purchase. I liked how the cover sort of flipped over onto the screen, almost like it was magnetized. I never used it as a stand because I read that it make them not lie flat anymore. Also like the on/off feature, to which I am accustomed on my Note 2 via "Smart Cover" app. However, that case felt very flimsy. The top cover would slide around on the screen when closed, and give the impression it could slip right out of your hands when carrying it. Protection from a drop? I doubt it! Liked the slim form but having children and a daily commute to and from work, throwing it in my handbag every day, or even taking it out at lunch to read or play a game...I was VERY paranoid and toted it around like a newborn!
If you don't want any added weight or girth to your tablet, then don't get the OBD. It does make it a bit bulkier, heavier, yes. But a HARD plastic screen cap that SNAPS into place when not in use? Awesome! Perfect for transporting in a bag or even just under your arm. Piece of mind, for sure. I'm not testing it out with any drops to be sure, but I'm pretty certain it would fair pretty well.
The outside rubber silicone shell was harder than I thought it would be. However, I think it seems like it would be more durable than a softer material. It's tough to disassemble, so that's also a plus that it won't just come apart on a whim. The built-in screen protector seems pretty decent. Clear as glass. It feels a bit funky with s-pen but it's not horrible. Just have to get used to it. It also seems just a tiny bit bowed (maybe it is just the one I got) so when you push down with the pen near the center you can feel it love ever so slightly towards the glass. Really, no big deal, and could just be mine. Gladly I overlook this for the extra insurance.
Love the rubberized side buttons and port covers. I think they are a definite plus to keep dust & such out. It's not waterproof but if water would get spilled nearby while sitting, or splashed from rain or whatever, it would definitely deflect some or all of it. Don't drop it in the fishtank or the toilet and you should be fine!
I'd be glad to answer any questions. I just got it today so I haven't used it too much yet, but I can tell I'm gonna love it!
Thanks for the feedback! I'm definitely going to get this case!
Awesome..!!
Well I too carry this case for my Note 8.0 and it has just made my Note a strong MACHO product....
I got this case for my Note 8 last week and I love it.
I had an Otterbox Commuter on my iPhone 4S: saved it on one occasion in particular that could have cost me a new phone. I also had the Otterbox Defender on my old iPad 2. Both the old iPhone and old iPad are still going strong for my special lady friend and look brand new thanks to Otterbox.
I now have the Otterbox Commuter on my S4, Defender on Note 8 and I'm waiting for my recently ordered iPad Mini Defender.
These are great products, especially if you are a bit rough with your stuff.
How does the s-pen respond to the screen protector on the OBD?

It feels....different. Not as smooth as on glass. You can definitely tell there is more "drag" as you're moving the spen across. I am not one of those super-picky people who complain about everything (lol) so it doesn't really bother me.
The thing I've noticed most about the sensitivity of the screen protector (in general) is that it makes the screen a bit less responsive. You must press a little longer (we're talking such a minute split second though, and I'm talking finger here) and more deliberately. This is caused, in my opinion, by the fact that the protector is not sucked fast to the glass underneath. I can feel mine move the tiniest bit when I press on it (because it is not adhered but simply sits on top) and that small bit d, of space between it and the screen provides a slight delay. Don't let that scare you. It's really not that bad. Of course, like I said, consider the source here (non-picky-person!!!!) I would rather have a well-protected device with a inconsequential difference in touch than a vulnerable, naked one! IMHO
Can you remove the screen protector like in other Otterbox cases?
Just got mine today. I don't think you can remove the screen without messing it up. Prepared to be told I'm wrong though.

We are going on vacation next month and I don't want to go with just the book cover case. I just ordered this and can't wait to get it.

Cheers

So, after owning the Otterbox for 2 months and 9 days, both "tabs" on the side of the "sleeve" that hold the tablet on it have broke. I am by no means rough on this thing at all. Even with the tablet being in the case I am still super easy on it. Submitted an online warranty claim, Sent in a couple of pictures of the damage to Otterbox, they reviewed my claim and within 24 hours I have a replacement heading my way. So even though it broke, I am still 100% satisfied with their product and now with their warranty process. If you haven't gotten an Otterbox yet, I say get one.
Cheers
I have had mine a couple of weeks and I love it. I am glad to hear how responsive Otterbox is to replace it.

I finally received mine in the mail (1 month wait while overseas from OtterBox, BUT it was free shipping!) and I don't think I'd be happier with another brand. The rubber isn't super soft, nor does it attract lint. I don't think the rubber will stretch any time soon, it's pretty solid! Definitely happy with my purchase!
I'm moderately happy with the Defender on my Note 2 (screen protector isn't flush, rubber stretches) and an considering a Note 8. Anyone got any long term reviews on this case?
re: Defefender-Note 8
Mine has been fine, EXCEPT one of the little tabs broke off of the cover portion. Since it was less than a year, I contacted OtterBox to get a replacement. I had everything gathered beforehand...receipt, place I purchased it, etc...ended up that I didn't really need all that stuff. They just wanted pics documenting the damage, and they also asked for the batch number (probably for quality control purposes-it's imprinted in the rubber.) They sent out the replacement right away via FedEx, had it in a few days. Could not be happier with their EXCELLENT customer service. I'm sure if you did have issues, they would be able to address them with you. Oh, and the rep on the phone was super nice & VERY friendly. :good:
I have the poetic revolution and i couldnt be happier. Its just as solid as the otterbox but only 30$ usd 3 year warranty it took to days from amazon..its feels premium protects well ...
