I'm trying to copy some large files over the network but the network keeps loosing track of the machine I'm trying to copy to.
The machine gets to about 2gb then falls off the network...
Anyone else seen this or know of a fix?

Is your surface going to sleep?
We talking via ethernet or wifi? I had issues on windows 7 copying a 900mb file via wifi. 4 out of 5 bars signal on my laptop and 5 bars on the desktop. File stopped at 750mb every god damn time. Ethernet cable fixed it immediately (and gave a nice boost to transfer speed, no idea why but my laptop will not surpass the 5 megabit barrier under wifi. Hit 26 via ethernet.).
Wifi, signal is fine and I'm making sure its not going to sleep by tapping the mouse when the screen dims a bit..

Hi,
Could anyone tell me what's the rationale behind this:
When the device connects to the internet via 3G in order to receive mail or whatever, it will just stay connected until you bother to manually disconnect it. But when using wifi, which unlike 3G doesn't cost by the byte, it will disconnect as soon as the screen goes off?
Why on earth is that? Instead of running the hell away from cellular internet as soon as possible it does so with the free wifi? Is there any way to change this behavior? Or am I the only one who's bothered by this?
Besides that, more often than not, I'm having problems connecting to wifi... sometimes it would attempt to connect to a network and then give up and say it's unavailable (even though the signal is excellent and I'm right by the AP). other times, it appears connected but there's no internet... anyone else has these problems? Is my device defective?
Sorry if I'm ranting...
Thanks!
I think the behaviour is to save energy. When the screen goes off, the device "thinks" you don't use it anymore. Wifi drains your battery very fast, so the phone tries to reduce it.
For 3G it's the point, that there isn't much data transfer in order to stay connected. Maybe a few kb for the whole day (I don't know if there is any data transfer anyway, but when it's verly little). That's much cheaper than to pay for the full block (for example 100kb) everytime you disconnect. So staying connected saves money in most cases. That's why.
Connection problems: Do you use any encryption? Maybe that's the problem. So far I use wifi only for data transfers between my Macbook and the device. But I don't have any problems.
If you search hard enough you can find apps that might jus tkeep it on.
One such app is KaiserTweak which will keep that wifi on when screen goes off. problem with kaisertweak is that i have heard it can hard reset some peoples devvices, depending on what options you select.
i might give it a whirl because i hate it when my connection is lost, i end up using my data connection when i dont need to as it tries to take over when device wakes up!
edit: seems ok so far no hardreset yet!
Thanks, will try that.
I flashed a 6.1 rom and it seems to have made an improvement. Now it would connect fine to my home router every time and not just occasionally (it uses the most basic wep encryption). Still no luck at work though... just as before it appears connected but I can't reach anything inside or outside the lan. The encryption there is the more secure wpa-psk and there's no mac filtering.
Anyone successfully connected to a wpa wlan?
Okay, a little about my setup. I have tested on Slim ICS 2.7, 2.9; Codename Android 1.4, 1.5.5; as well as AOKP (I dont know exact builds, but am on the latest now - build 28). I have a Cradlepoint MBR 1000 which is a b/g/n 4g router (though I only have cable hooked up - was bought originally to allow me to broadcast my Clear 4g service, but Clear doesnt work where I live now).
EVO 3D, iPhone 4s, All my laptops, HeroC, Kyocera Echo, Roku...I mean everything connects to my Wi-Fi EXCEPT my NS4G...WTH?
Does anyone else have this issue?...could it be some settings with the N router?...I cant believe everything but this phone works.
Please help. It is so frustrating to be limited to 3g that works intermittently while I am at home. I have all my apps from the Google Play backed up to my sdcard so I dont have to connect to install them...it is a huge pain. Thanks in advance
Need some more description. What settings do you have on the router, how have you tried to connect, does it connect then drop out, can you see the network at all, etc?
Either your phones wifi hardware is gone or your house.
So here's what you can do to narrow down on the problem.
Tell me if you can connect to any other wifi hotspots outside your house. If it does connect then problem is router if it doesn't than problem is with the phone.
Good luck.

I have the same problem but only at home .I don't anderstand a lot about this, I change my rom with ice scream sandswich 4.0.4 it was working with 4.0.3. Where is the problem. Thanks for your help.

Not necessarily. Setup of each router can change in numerous ways so as to stop certain devices from working, as can certain phone settings not allow connecting to certain routers. It is not quite so black and white, and we already know the router works.

Sounds like a channel setting problem. Easiest way is to open up your router config and change the channel between 1 and 12 and this shouldn't happen again. Alternatively you could mess around with your build.prop.
Harbb is right, you might want to test several things within your router:
Change channels (use 1, 6 or 11-12)
Set it to only use on b/g connections (don't use n)
Different authentication methods (WPA2 with AES, etc)
And make sure you don't have a limit on your DHCP settings (just to make sure you don't have a ton of devices connected so it's not handing more IPs) or MAC filter.
Okay, sorry for not replying sooner. I posted this, then went to bed.
@Harbb:
It does see the network, lets me connect, put in the password, and says it is connected. It always says the connection is poor when I know it should be a good connection. The phone then shows the wifi icon and up and down arrows inside of the icon...I never see a portion of blue. When I try to download from the market, it will act like it is working, then the icon will disappear/reappear numerous times before it tell me there is not a connection.
As for my router setup. I do not know what information will help in this but here is some info: I do not have MAC filtering on, WISH is active (dont use it), WPA2 Only Personal AES (this is what I use), Channel 6 (I have tried channel 11 because I read somewhere the Wii needed 1 or 11 or one of my devices needed it), Transmission rate is Best, Channel is Auto 20/40 MHz, Mixed b/g/n (to utilize N and G, it has to be on this setting, there isn't an option for Mixed n/g), it is set on 192.168.0.x, NetBIOS mode type is Mixed (Broadcast then Point to Point).
@shockem I have not tested it with any other hotspot to see if it is just a problem with that router and this phone. I will try if I can find an open hotspot and let you know.
@Billchen0014 It does detect the network and connects, but drops it constantly...I cant even download a <1MB file from the market.
@Harbb (2) Going by your advice to daviki...it looks like I need to check another router. I go by a Starbucks, so I will try their hotspot...unless it isn't free, then Ill look around.
Thanks everyone who is helping me with this.
@Oogway, I will try G only and see what happens...if I use Mixed it has to be g/b or b/g/n. As for DHCP there is only 2 maybe 3 devices connected and No MAC filtering
Could it be the Wifi country code issue?
Is that something on the phone? Also, I tested different channels (1, 6, 11) as well as b/g and g only. Still no go.

Thanks for the info. Test another hotspot (preferably one with a wpa2 password too if possible) and let us know. I'll reply later with some things to try as I gotta get going.
Okay, I did test one more thing. I sat right next to the router and it had full bars. Stayed full and my speed tests were great. Moved to where I sit on the couch about 30 walking steps away and no connection. I know the signal reaches because it is where I use laptops and other devices. The PS3 and Wii are further away and have no issue. It is not a clear path, but there aren't any doors between the router and the couch.
Just some more info...leading me to believe it is an issue with the phone. I get horrible service with Sprint also, so it may be connected. I don't know.
Any ideas? Is it just because of how far away I am?
Again, thanks everyone for the help. It has been so frustrating ever since I got the phone.

Wifi Analyzer can give you a dB reading on the signal strength if you'd like to try that from a distance too. Wifi at uni likes to show low bars quite often, however alot of the time i have great signal and it shows through wifi analyzer. May not be related since uni is a peap connection, but worth a shot anywho. Might give another hint on whether you should seek out warranty or router settings.
Well, my TF700 works decently aside from this issue:
My Wi-Fi will pretty much drop instantly when I attempt to airsync/airdroid copy something over to the TF700. Anybody else have this issue?
Anybody able to use airsync/airdroid successfully?

i'm using wifi file transfer pro and i get about 3-5MB/s when sitting right next to the router. the speed often drops when transferring files and it even stalls and then soon afterwards to goes a higher speed again. no idea if this problem is because of wifi file transfer or the tablet I/O lags which is really an issue (even with .26 firmware), i can't watch a movie when transferring some new movies via wifi to the tablet..
i had the "completely dropping wifi" issue only once but i think it was because of bad signal.
Good Morning,
By connecting the NAS via wifi network, the notebook can transfer files at a speed of about 4-5 MB/S, but through our ASUS TF700T can transfer files at a speed of about 1.7MB/S.
How come?
What do I need to set to be able to speed up data transfer and watch movies smoothly?
Thanks
Will have to test later.
I wonder if asus have reduced the power consumption in 4.2.1? If so that could explain what you are seeing as the signal strength is not as strong.
I can try to test the old power profile to see if it helps.
Thanks for the answer, great sbdags!
I tried the wifi with the NAS both your CROMI 3.6 JB 4.1.1 and then with Asus Stock 4.2.1 but it was always so slow.
Tonight I try to remove the fuel consumption.

Wifi Advanced settings, untick WiFi optimizations maybe?
Yes, I try to uncheck that option on by default.
Our Asus has wifi "n" right?
How should transfer the data?
Yesterday I tried to transfer the data by removing the option of saving the wifi but the speed remained the same.
I noticed that the netbook and the notebook clamp the signal at 150 Mbps while the TAB anchors it to 65 Mbps (of course in the same room).
How come the TAB does not manage to connect with full signal?
There is a program that allows you to vary the parameters of the wifi inside the TAB?
Netbooks and Notebooks connect to 150 Mbps regularly!

65Mbps is the maximum speed the TF700 can connect at.
In my experience this does not matter though as the max short burst speed achievable is ~55Mbps as shown in perfmon when writing to class 10 sd. It is lower than this when writing to internal storage. Max sustained speed I get over wifi is using andftp which gives ~50Mbps.
50Mbps over WiFi? You are lucky boy! I can confirm very poor and inconsistent WiFi performance. Speedtest.net is reporting odd results and also data transfer from my home NAS varies. Based on Speedtest.net WiFi speed is mostly 1-2Mbps occasionally nearing 30Mbps. My PC wired to same router is pulling files from internet easily at 60Mbps and from local NAS much more faster. I also tried factory reset to have rooted clean 4.2.1, but it does not helped. Also AnTuTu benchmark is not giving consistent test outputs on my tablet so I am assuming that this could be related to some newly introduced bug.
I have 65 Mbps data transfer via the Internet, but not as a hook to the router.
The netbook hooked to 150 Mbps and Tab 65
The netbook on the NAS transfers data at a speed of 10 MB / s while the TAB to 1.7 MB / S!
I thought that at least 5 MB / S arrived safely

I should clarify. I also get very low speeds using samba transfers. Max of about 30Mbps. I only see 50Mbps when using ftp (from local media server) to my 64gb class 10 sd card fomatted to ntfs. If I format to exfat or other I can't achieve as high a transfer speed.
After updating to 4.2.1 I had very low speed and it didn't improve until i cold booted twice.
I have nearly all 1080p mkv's on my files server and these can be up to 25GB in size. The only way I have found to reliably stream them from my server without stuttering is to use the FTP function in dice player.
From my point of view the problem lays in inconsistent WiFi speed. I can live happily with steady 10Mbps transfer speed for sure, but problem is that sometimes it is 30Mbps and sometimes only 2Mbps or even less, both on same network and router :silly:
I am trying in all ways. But I do not understand why do not you connect to wifi most of my house. The PC is connected, the PS3 also. But my nexus 5 no! I formatted several times putting the stock and also the custom rom. But the problem persists!
What do you recommend?

First, reboot your router and modem, and after that, reboot your phone completely. It may be as simple as that.
also, try disabling / re-enabling the pc's network access, (if it's windows vista / 7 up) i noticed this OS has a way of locking the network where other devices can't gain an IP addy.. especially if it's been on for a long period of time.
i had a vista laptop in my home which was in the corner connected to wifi i rarely turn it off, i got home one day & tried to connect my linux laptop & couldn't exstablish a connection, right wpa password & the works;
even rebooted the router & still...
i went into the basement where that laptop was, & rebooted it, then went back upstairs to my regular laptop, & gained a IP addy..

Can your phone not find it? Or not connect to it?
If it can't find it, try above.
If it can't connect, maybe the WEP Key has changed?
As he said his PS3 and his PC connects to WIFI so his N5 is the problem
Go into WIFI settings by pressing the WIFI symbol in the statusbar then press the three dots at the right corner on bottom, choose advanced and change the WFI frequency band just try the differnt settings you can make this may helps you to solve your problem
My N5 won't scan for WiFi networks. I have to type them in manually :/
