[How to] update and root jellybean 4.1.2 (P5110) - Galaxy Tab 2 10.1" Android Development

This thread will help you to update and root android version 1.4.2 on your galaxy tab 2 (P5110 only).
This solution requires access to a PC running Windows.
This procedure was tested on stock 4.1.2 ROM and may not work on other versions.
WARNING:
I am not responsible for bricking your device, using this thread is at your own risk!
Requirements:
- Odin (download)
- Latest galaxy tab 2 android firmware (download)
- Clockworkmod (download)
- SuperSU v1.10 (download)
- Samsung usb drivers (download)
Process
Step 1:
Copy SuperSU v1.10 to the root of your SDcard.
Install the Samsung USB drivers.
Step 2:
Make sure Samsung KIES is not running on your computer!
Step 3:
Make sure your tablet is not connected to your computer or another power supply.
Shut down your tablet and turn it on holding both power and volume up (right) button pushed.
After some seconds you'll see a yellow triangle, push volume down now.
Step 4:
Connect your tablet to the computer and start Odin.
When Odin is succesfully connected you should see a orange box lighting up. (in Odin)
Step 5:
Extract P5110XXCMA2_P5110OXXCMA4_SMO.zip to a place you can find it.
In odin, click on PDA and select the tar.md5 file you just extracted.
Step 6:
Click on start and let Odin flash your tablet.
Step 7:
When flashing is complete your tablet should restart, turn it off again and repeat step 3.
When you're in download mode again click on PDA in odin and select GT-P5110_ClockworkMod-Recovery_6.0.1.0.tar.
Step 8:
Click on start and let odin flash clockworkmod on your tablet.
Step 9:
When flashing is complete your tablet will restart once again, turn it off again.
Start your tablet by pushing volume down and power at the same time (not volume up)
Step 10:
Once you are in recovery, use volume button (UP/DOWN/LEFT OR RIGHT) to move around and POWER button to select an option.
Select install zip from sdcard. Choose SuperSU v1.10 file you already copied to root of sdcard.
Step 11:
Once you're done flashing you can go back to the main page of clockwork recovery and clear cache.
When that is finished you can reboot your system
That's it!
Your device has been updated to version 4.1.2 of android and rooted with superuser.
WARNING: Do not install ROM Manager until developer says app will support Tab2 10.1 < Posting this because someone bricked their Tab2.
In addition, ROM Toolbox may not work properly (1 crash reported).

You can install the update above, it will reset your recovery to default.
That way you'll be able to flash the new recovery
Thread changes: I deleted superuser and added supersu, this way root will work.

Hi,
Thanks for the tutorial.
We bought 2 Tab 2 10.1's yesterday (It's our wedding anniversary on Monday these where the gifts we bought each other) and after spenging last night flashing PA, CM and PACMAN I settled on a stock rom.
All the others just don't have the right feel..... Where is the Sotmax rom when you need it...
Any way so my tablet had root and a custom rom installed already (and a back up) and was stock after flashing.
For the mrs I just followed this and all went according to plan.
Only thing I can say is the link you have to teamhacksung.org is broken.
I did also flash philz touch straight after this.

anyone got a working one?

I think that, if Kies is installed on your pc, you dont need to install samsung usb drivers again...

I've updated my Tab 2 to 4.2.2 but am largely unimpressed so wanted to use this method to root and then install a custom ROM.
If I use the Android firmware from the link above, will I be back on the older version of Android (which doesn't bother me), or do I need to follow all them steps above but use the 4.2.2 rom from somewhere?
Anyone?

Wow, no love. Was wondering the same thing. ^

Can I use this method with stock JB 4.2.2?

No. There's a different root method for 4.2.2. Android-Andi posted a root method for that firmware in the development section. It's in here somewhere...

-1-About this post-
This thread post is an overall tutorial post on how to update your GT-P6210's firmware to the latest version, Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS). This post is only for the WiFi edition of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus (GT-P6210), if you have a different Galaxy Tab, I suggest you NOT follow any of the details explained in this OP. If you happen to find another method of rooting and obtaining ICS with a recovery on your device-- congratulations! . While that is cool, this guide still proves to be the most sufficient, stable, and overall safest way to flash the upgrade without any bad effects.

Intro
garyd9 originally ported ClockworkMod Recovery 5.0.0.x to the Tab 7 Plus (all variants) in late 2011. Gary's since moved on to bigger and better things, and so has ClockworkMod Recovery. As of ClockworkMod Recovery version 6.0.0.x backups and restores should be faster, take up less space (due to file-level deduplication), and there's a swanky new look (though a bit iOS-y).
wtf is "recovery" anyways?
Recovery mode is a minimal, alternative mode of booting which allows you to install software from zip files, backup/restore your device, and perform low-level operations like factory reset and formatting partitions. All Android devices have a recovery mode (it's part of the stock AOSP environment), but the default recovery mode is very limited. For example, it only allows you to flash zips which have been signed by the vendor's private key.
ClockworkMod Recovery was developed by Koushik Dutta (@koush), and is much more flexible... If you want to flash CyanogenMod, you MUST have a non-stock recovery. Right now that means ClockworkMod Recovery.

Flashing with Heimdall
I recommend flashing with Heimdall; it's open source and cross platform, whereas Odin is a leaked internal tool from Samsung, and only works on Windows. I absolutely cannot give guidance on using Odin. As of this time I recommend using Heimdall 1.3.1 (1.3.2 has a known bug which prevents flashing some files from completing successfully).
You can use the GUI (heimdall-frontend), or flash from the command line. In Linux it's easy:
Unplug your tablet from USB
Turn your tablet off
Hold Volume Down and press the power button, keep holding Volume Down for 5 seconds
Plug your tablet back into the computer
Type:
Code:
sudo heimdall flash --recovery p6200-clockworkmod-6.0.0.8.img
After that you should now have ClockworkMod Recovery installed.
Booting into CWM
There are a few ways to get into ClockworkMod Recovery:
Using adb, type: adb reboot recovery
From CyanogenMod's power menu: hold down the Power button for a few seconds, then navigate to Reboot -> Recovery.
With the tablet off, hold Volume Up and press power, keep holding Volume Up for 5 seconds
Disclaimer
I've tested backing up and restoring to CM9 and stock a few times, and it seems to work well. But please back up your stuff with other applications, like Go Backup or Titanium Backup just in case something goes wrong with restoring.

Just wanted to say thanks for the write up and the files! The upgrade to ICS went smooth like butter! The tab runs so nice with ICS on it, much more responsive and fluid. I had stock HC, only rooted and I was able to just drop the ICS firmware right on top via odin, no problemo. I hit start and walked away, came back to "Optimizing Applications". Did the CWM and Rooted. Loaded up Apex ICS launcher, finally!! Nice job!

Clean way to install Cyanogenmod

I want to install Cyanogenmod on my i5801 running froyo. Looking for a simple & clean method.
After hours of surfing, I have reached these two tutorials:
android.gs / update-galaxy-3-i5801-apollo-cyanogenmod-7-2
newtechie . com / 2012 / 01 / how-to-install-cyanogenmod-7-on-samsung.html
Which one is the recommended way? During my search, I learnt of something called Clockworkmod. Is there any need to first have CWM on my phone? Are there any prerequisites (other than mentioned in the tutorials) that need to be taken care of.
During the learning process, I have already rooted the phone using Super One Click, v 1.7.
Please help.

If you have already rooted your phone, flashing cm is not very complicated.
just follow simple steps
1.download the cm7 odin package
2. download odin package for i5800 with ops file
3. open odin ..choose ops file
4. click 'one package' option
5. select cm7 tar package.
6. start phone in download mode pressing power, home and vol down together.
7. connect usb cable ...odin will show yellow color in one port
8. start upload and wait until reboot
9. wipe data factory setting while still connected with usb and pc
10. wait until odin says 'pass' with yellow turning blue.
11. disconnect usb and use cm7.

It's not a must but if anything does go to then it comes in handy because you can just restore the backup.
To get Cwm you can root your phone using superoneclick the flashing g3mod 2.5 kernel.

[GT-P51xx|SGH-I497|SGH-T779] CF-Auto-Root

Check your device model ! Settings -> About device -> Model number. See the third post for exact supported model numbers. If your device is a totally different model, it will not work (may even brick) !
CF-Root is the root for "rooting beginners" and those who want to keep as close to stock as possible. CF-Root is meant to be used in combination with stock Samsung firmwares, and be the quickest and easiest way for your first root.
Donate
CF-Root has been available for many devices and has clocked over 8 million downloads. This is not even counting custom ROMs that already include it. Don't be a leech, buy me a beer (and use the "Thanks" button!). Imagine if every CF-Root user has donated me $1...
What's installed
- SuperSU binary and APK
- Stock recovery
Installation and usage
Flash the CF-Auto-Root package as PDA in ODIN (details on how to do that are in next post), and your device should reboot into a modified recovery (signified by a large red Android logo) and it will install SuperSU for you and restore the stock recovery, and reboot back into Android.
If you don't get to the red Android logo, boot into recovery manually ("adb reboot recovery", or boot while holding Power+VolUp+Home).
Using this root increases your flash counter. You should run Triangle Away (see below) after rooting to reset the counter. Note that if you want to run custom kernels or custom recoveries, your flash counter will be set to 1 at every boot. Either configure Triangle Away to reset the counter at every boot (Play version only) or only reset the counter when you need to go into warranty.
Did you see the red Android logo during rooting, but SuperSU does not appear? This may sometimes occur due to left-over files and settings, however, you can usually install SuperSU from Google Play at this stage and it'll just work.
Not included - Triangle Away
Triangle Away can be used to reset the flash counter after installing CF-Root. The flash counter keeps track of how many custom firmwares you have flashed, as this voids warranty. (No idea what this about ? Read up on it, you will want to use this !)
Not included - adbd Insecure
As this CF-Root does not include a custom kernel, adb shell does not have root access by default (you can still get it by typing su inside the shell), nor is adb remount supported, nor will adb push and adb pull work on system files. adbd Insecure can be used to remedy this situation. (No idea what this is about ? Don't worry about it !)

[CENTRAL] CF-Auto-Root
For requests for new roots and generic discussion - please keep device specific discussion in the thread you are viewing now.
ODIN Installation (detailed)
- Follow these instructions to the letter. Do not touch any buttons or checkboxes that are not listed below to touch!
- Unzip the attached Odin3-vX.X.zip file
- Download and unzip the CF-Auto-Root-....zip file (see posts below this one)
- If you end up with a recovery.img and cache.img file, you've extracted twice. You need to end up with a .tar.md5 file - don't extract that one
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start Odin3-vX.X.exe
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Auto-Root-....tar.md5
- Put your phone in download mode (turn off phone, then hold VolDown+Power to boot - if it asks you to press a button to continue, press the listed button, or run adb reboot download command)
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure Repartition is NOT checked
- Click the Start button
- Wait for Android to boot
- Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)
- NOTE: Sometimes the device does *not* boot into recovery mode and root your device. Just do the entire procedure again if this happens. If it still will not install root and such, make sure that in Odin "Auto Reboot" is not checked. Then after flashing, hold VolUp+Power (for several seconds) to boot into recovery manually. This will start the install process.
New to Samsung? Unfamiliar with Odin? Think all the above is a hassle? Get used to it. It's very simple, and us Samsung folk use Odin (or Mobile ODIN ) for everything! It's so very very convenient once you get used to it. Notice the 30 second comment above? For experienced users, the entire process indeed takes only 30 seconds!
You may now optionally want to install and run Triangle Away to reset the flash counter.

This makes it a lot easier rooting the Tab.
Will try it out right away
Samsung P5100
Used CF-Root on my P1000 when you made that available. Now have just used your CF-Root for Tab 2 on my P5100. As usual excellent work and also just bought Triangle Away from the Play store. Thanks Chainfire for doing this for us.
Great, I will post the results tomorrow
Root
I have to be honest, no full rooted device...
Flash the CF-Auto-Root package as PDA in ODIN, and your device should reboot into a modified recovery (signified by a large red Android logo) and it will install SuperSU for you and restore the stock recovery, and reboot back into Android.
So the Weltwon method is still my root..
But TriangleAway v2.15 works on 4.03.+ 4.04. + 4.1.1 THANKYOU.
Working good!
THANKSS
thx lot

It's possible to reinstall CWMManager.apk on P5110 ?
Hi‚ can i flash this CF-Auto-Root in Mobile Odin in same time with a new ROM ? Or should i flash the ROM first and then CF-Auto-Root ? Thanks for your answer.

I have updated all the CF-Auto-Root downloads. The scripts have been slightly improved, the roboto font is now used, and SuperSU has been updated to v0.98 !
There is no need to flash the updated version if you are currently successfully rooted (you'll have gotten the latest SuperSU from Google Play updates already).

i just want to be clear on this, because i dont have experience with samsung devices. i just got the p5113 (potentially not keeping it, but if i do) and it came with 4.1.1. so here are the steps as i understand it to get a custom rom going.
1. run through the cf autoroot steps as outlined in OP
2. download ROM manager app from play store, and flash latest touch recovery through that.
3. flash custom rom + gapps from there.
please let me know if any of that is incorrect. thanks!
Flashed via Odin 1.85 the HK 4.1.1 onto my Tab 2 10.1. Then rooted with CF Auto-Root. Worked a dream.
I've got an odd problem. Although I've been rootingfor years (GS1, GS2, GS3 and now Note 2) and very familiar with ODIN. But my Tab wont go into Download mode via power/volme up. I can go to the stock recovery from power/volume down but not to download mode. Any ideas what Sammy has done and how to circumvent?
EDIT:
Started working now after the 4.1.1update. But the one click is now ;(

[GUIDE][I9500][Help Thread] Updating, Resolving soft bricks, root issues and stuff.

This is the guide for updating to 4.3 from stock unrooted state or while having a custom rom on it.
Many people have suffered bootlops or worse issues when trying to update to 4.2.2. Alright. Thisthread will also be used for helping people who hace bricked their devices and i will actively help whenever i can.
This process is quite tedious for unpatient people so stay away from the thread if you cant follow all the steps.
Pre-requisites:
Galaxy S4 I9500 (exynos/octa)
odin version 3.09 (attached to 2nd post)
A stock 4.3 firmware package (take it from firmware thread)
cwm 6.0.4.4 by S.a.M.e.R_d (for root users) link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2489234
adonis.pit (8.94 gb) (attached to 2nd post)
cf autoroot(for root users) link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2292615
Degrated Shadow's KNOX Remover.zip script (attached to the post
some patience and brain (no links for these .. lol.. cant attach either)
Scenario 1: You aren't rooted and have all the status's official and old bootloader on 4.2.2
Best way for you is to connect to the kies and download and update and install it through kies.
Do not download otas.
For some people it gives bootlopping error and for some it just works alright. It bootlop'ed for my brother but not for my friend who were on same stock firmwares and all.
if it is bootlopping now
1. Go to recovery (when phone is switched off press power butoon+volume up+home button)
2. Wipe Data/Factory Reset (this will wipe your data and its necessary because now you cant downgrade without triggering you warranty bit)
Scenario 2: You are on prerooted stock firmware.
Download the 4.3 firmware package(with 4 files)
Set the drivers up on windows
1. Open Odin v3.09
2. Put appropriate files in AP BL CP CSC
AP=previously PDA
BL=bootloader
CP=Modem
CSC=file starting with CSC
3. Download the adonis it and put it in pit.
4. Connect device in download mode (when phone is switched off press and hold power button+volume down+home button)
Voila you are done.
Scenario 3: You are rooted and are on custom roms or a custom pit (adonis_c.pit comes with 11.82 gb storage which is incompatible with 4.3 firmwares.
1. Flash pit seperately without the firmware package in odin v3.09
2. Perform a battery pull then put the battery back
3. Go into download mode (when phone is switched off press and hold power button+volume down+home button).
4. Flash the 4 package file
AP=previously PDA
BL=bootloader
CP=Modem
CSC=file starting with CSC
5. Flash cf autoroot by chainfire by putting it in AP
let it root and install stock recovery
6. Go back to download mode and install GT-I9500-CWM-6.0.4.4.tar Build #1 as AP
Step 7 and following are to be followed for using custom roms although they arent available at the time this is posted. wanam has relesed 3.0 but is a test rom
7. Boot back into recovery and go to mounts and storage
Format everything except the ext sd card
8. Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik Cache(in advanced menu in cwm)
this whole step might seem unnecessary but always be at the safer side
9. Install the custom rom and boot back into android
10. Flash the KNOX remover script by me
11. YOU are good to go
Voila you are done
NOW FOR ROOT USERS
after setting up all accounts and stuff
1. Go to play store.
2. Update supersu.
3. Open supersu and install the binaries.
4. Flash the KNOX remover script by me OR Install Titanium Backup link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&hl=en
5. Freeze or delete all knox crap. ( I prefer deleting).
6. Reboot.
Now you are set and ready to install all the apps and root is working.
Scenario 4: you are on 4.3. want to flash a custom rom. and dont care about warranty.
1. Flash CF autoroot by chainfire/ Flash latest perseus kernel
2. Then power off. go to download mode (power button+Home button+volume down)(
3. Flash cwm 6.0.4.4
4. Flash any custom rom you want now from recovery. but remember to format system atleast once before that.
Credits: @Chainfire ( for cf autoroot)
@S.a.M.e.R_d (for cwm 6.0.4.4
@wanam (for explaining that the security policy is hardcoded into the kernel)

@runedrune (for solving my doubts in day to day life)
Samsung (for knox crap, painful security policy, irritating enforcing mode of selinux, and the smoothest ever touchwiz ROM)
Alright. SO this thread will be used for hel;ping people who have soft bricked their devices or similar issues like not getting root or sound problems

This place wont stand for spammes and they will be reported.

[N900] ALL-IN-ONE Guide[Root/Recovery/ROM/Knox Reset(claim warranty)/Revert-to-Stock]

Note: There are a lot of guides all over XDA-Fourm for the things that i am going to share in this thread, I am just trying to get all the things at one place and in easy manner, so i request you to please don't ask why another thread . I have mirrored all the files in this thread to my own Drive links so that it would be available till i die , you can find the original links in References at the end.
I am just a normal user, been through all of the things mentioned below just like many of you, but there are still users who are new to all these stuff. So i thought of getting all the things at one place and write the steps in a layman's language. If there is something wrong and needs to be changed, do mention that.
This guide is for the Exynos version of Samsung Galaxy Note 3 only which includes:
How to Root
How to Install recovery
How to Flash a new ROM
How to install Xposed on TouchWiz based ROMs (5.0 and 5.0.2)
How to Reset KNOX & Revert to Stock (to claim warranty)
Downloads:
1. Odin v3.07(odin application- needed to flash stuff)
2. USB Drivers(drivers for windows)
3. 'CF-Auto-Root' file by @Chainfire(to root)
4. Bootloader to Reset KNOX counter
5. TWRP Recovery (Use this when you have to flash CM based ROMS)
6. CWM 6.0.7.0 OR Philz Touch 6.47.7 (use these when you have to flash TouchWiz based ROMs)
7. Stock Firmware - from Sammobile Mirror for N900XXUEBOE3_N900ODDEBOB2_INS.zip (Indian Version)
8. XposedInstaller_3.0_alpha4 (Tried and tested)
9. xposed-v65-sdk21-arm-arter97-V5-generic OR xposed-v75-sdk21-arm-arter97-exynos.zip (Works with the latest N900ZSUEBOK3 firmware)
Step 0. Backup
Take backup of your contents (contacts, messages, images, videos, etc.)
Step 1. Getting things ready
Download & Extract and Install USB Drivers 1.5.20.
Download & Extract Odin v3.07.
Download CF-Auto-Root-ha3g-ha3gxx-smn900.tar.md5 (make sure you get a file with .md5 extension).
Step 2. Connection
Run Odin on your PC (as administrator).
Turn off your phone.
Keeping the volume down and home button pressed, turn on your phone.
Get into download mode by pressing volume up after you are asked on the phone screen.
After all the above, connect phone with USB cable to PC.
One of the box will turn yellow and confirm that the phone is connected
Step 3. Root (KNOX will show change in counter, but you can always reset that when you need to claim warranty)
Choose PDA in Odin and select the .md5 file extracted in step 1 (don't change anything else in odin)
Press “Start”, the process will complete in few seconds and phone will automatically restart.
Congrats!! You rooted your phone, you will get a SuperSu app in the app drawer.
Step 4. Custom Recovery
In Odin choose PDA and select any of the two recovery as per your need:
twrp-2.8.7.0-ha3g.tar
OR
n900-cwm6.0.7.0.tar (philz zip file is not odin compatible, you can flash it within the recovery)
the press “Start”
Step 4.1 Full Backup (Similar to Restore Point - only after flashed a custom recovery)
Turn off the phone
Keeping the volume up and home button pressed, turn on the phone, you will get to recovery.
Go to Backup & Restore and choose backup to sdcard or backup to extSdCard (will take about 10-15 minutes)
Now you have a restore point, you can go back to this state whenever you want.
Step 5. Flashing a new ROM (if you want to)
Although you must always refer the individual ROM thread as they may have some different steps, but this is a general way to flash a ROM
Download the ROM (zip file) and copy to internal/external storage on your phone.
Turn off the phone
Keeping the volume up and home button pressed, turn on the phone, you will get to recovery.
Follow as per your choice of clean or dirty flash (in the Note)
Then choose install zip, select your ROM, then “yes”
reboot the phone.
Done. You have a new ROM
Note: Clean install/flash means - wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache (sometimes wipe system too) then install ROM.
Dirty install/flash means – direct install without wiping any partition
Step 6. Install Xposed -only for 5.0 or 5.0.2 ROMS (if you want to, you will need a deodexed rom, won't work on stock odexed roms)
Download the XposedInstaller_3.0_alpha4 & xposed-v65-sdk21-arm-arter97-V5-generic and copy both the files to your phone (internal or sd-card).
Install the XposedInstaller_3.0_alpha4.apk but don't run the app.
Restart your phone into Recovery Mode. (turn off then pressing volume up + home and turn on)
choose install a zip, select the xposed-v65-sdk21-arm-arter97-V5-generic.zip or xposed-v75-sdk21-arm-arter97-exynos.zip
reboot your phone. (you will get android is upgrading which will take a while)
Step 7. Revert to stock with KNOX counter as 0x0 and system state as Official (you can claim warranty comfortably)
a. Download and Extract the bootloader.zip
b. Run Odin
c. Turn off your phone.
d. Keeping the volume down and home button pressed, turn on your phone.
e. Get into download mode by pressing volume up after you are asked on the phone screen.
f. Connect phone with USB cable to PC.
g. Choose PDA in Odin and select the Bootloader.tar file. (don't change anything else on odin)
h. Press “Start”, the process will complete in few seconds and phone will automatically restart.
i. Go to download mode and check if the Knox has turned back to 0.
j. Now choose PDA on odin and select the official firmware (download from the above provided link) and press Start
k. After completion of the process let the device start but don't setup the device, just turn it off.
l. Reboot to stock recovery by pressing vol up + home + power and wipe data/cache and flash the firmware again, once flashing the firmware is completed enter download mode and check if current binary and system status has turned to official. If not repeat the process from step j.

yes, you can get the KNOX to 0 whenever you want (there is nothing like hardware fuse). i have done that thrice
just download the bootloader file and the original firmware.
Also you can check out the referenced thread, users have posted their knox status photos

I keep getting stuck on the PIT thing then Complete(Write) fail error happens. I have repartition unticked and install then removed KIES for the driver. It's for SM-N900.

You don't have to change anything in PIT, all you need to do is select PDA and choose the file.

Changes:
Added new Xposed v75 link that works with the latest stock firmware - N900ZSUEBOK3 (deodexed), as previous version was giving boot loop with alexega deodexed rom.
For the 5.0.1/5.0.2 based aurora roms (s6/note5) port you can use previous version provided (v65) and the apk is the same - XposedInstaller_3.0_alpha4
