TIP Desktop cradle Transformer - Asus Transformer TF700

As i found. he original Asus desktop cradle to expensive i have decided to make one my own. Or better assemble of excisting parts.
I ordered a desktop cradle of my former tablet the Tab 10.1 on aliexpress. And an USB cable from Asus.
Opened the box, pulled out the Samsung connector. And removed the plastic housing of the Asus charger connector.
With a little cutting on the old hole of the case. I put in the Asus connector. Glued it with hot glue. Drilled a hole in the back of the case to leave the cable in tact.
And Voila a nice solid desktopcradle. For around $18.
Sorry for the bad pics.....but you have a vision on how it looks..
Good luck on making one of your own.
Here a link of my ordered cradle

Wow that is simply awesome! I'll forward this to our design team as a "Hey check this out". No promises though... me being a TF700 owner, I'd love to have one of these!

Hows the reliability of aliexpress? IE, are they gonna steal my cash and run.

They are very reliable. I have ordered many times for several parts. Like led strips and so on. so no need to worry

I can get a similar stand for the iphone from a store called 5 below. (thay are an east coast store like the dollar store just everything is $5 or less) But I assume I can do the same thing with a stand there and just pop the cable out

Pfew I don't know. I know this because I still had this stand. What's important is that the place of the connector is not to far away of the back of the cradle. So the back of the tablet can rest to the plastic of the cradle. Otherwise the connector bends under an angle. With this configuration it's perfect. (I hope you all understand)

How this holding up after a few weeks of use? I'm a bit skeptical about the the possibly of bending the connector over time. I can deal with a broken connector on the cable, but I don't want it to damage or stretch the internal 40 pin slot.

It's still okay. There is not much weight to stress the connector.
Believe me I am very cautious with my equipment. It's working great. Only thing to look out for when placing it that the connector is in the middle of the port. Solution is making a mark which I didn't.

Wow very nice :good:

DIY-USB-Cradle made out of the box

Hi,
I was a bit bored this evening and I thought I could build myself a usb-cradle for my diamond. I just slammed it together because I just wanted to see if it could work.
What you need:
- the orginal plastic box your diamond came with
- good aiming skills, (i was too lazy to measure anything)
- about 60 - 90 minutes, depending how fast you work
- some tools i guess
- NO glue! Everything will fit so there is no gluing needed (i hate gluing)
What i did:
- cut out the shell the diamond was lying in, cut the top bit off and cut out a gap for the usb cable to fit through. This will be called the "tray" where the phone will be sitting in
- cut a gap into the top of the box to slide the "tray" into it
- cut a small hole into the back edge of the box, for the usb cable to fit through, when the box is standing on the table
- please take a look at the pictures so you might get a better idea of it
Hope someone likes it
greetz, Greebear
PS: you can even hide the charger and usb cable under it
EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nG0EKw0r1Y

i actually use my diy cradle every day
but im upto making some improvements...
trimming it down and adding some rubber feet and weight...
Jeeze guys..appreciate initiative, but you can buy a cradle from HK on eBay with a UK AC adaptor for less than a tenner....
,,,nice to see the box recycled I suppose
aaah, i had the box lying around anyway, this way its more or less usefull again
i know the cradles costs nearly nothing, but it was just good fun to build
recycling foam. i am using this to keep my devices upright on my night table.
foam from a TV and knife. that's all. easy to add the usb plug for charging in diamond's "cradle".
Was also thinking of making something from hard foam, one for home and the other for office.
I have a bunch of scrap lexan and acrylic panel material 3-6mm thick at work. I guess I'll have to try my hand at making a cradle. It would be useful since I just throw my phone on my desk right now and I really don't want to get it all scraped up.
There is something nice about making stuff that you could buy...just because you can.
what could be even better is when you have acces to a mill... mill it out of a massive block of acrilic
I found a good usb-cradle too.
"Freedent box" + piece of rubber, it doesn't look nice, but it's very simple for office desk.
For home, I have the HTC Cradle !!!
I was thinking something like this since I'm creative and I don't want to pay that much for a htc cradle.
Get some plastic, design it, mold it. Make a box.
Get the Dongle that has a 3.5mm, 2.5mm, and a usb connector.
Anyone see where I'm going
That way, my cradle will be able to attach to my 5.1 system
I'll post pics if I ever get to it.
Something like this:

I don't want to dampen your enthusiasm, but I tried one of these a few months back and while the idea is great and it works fine with certain devices, the shape of the TG01 back is such that it doesn't have a sufficient surface area in contact with the rubber pad to work. It is due to the slight curvature and also the raised ridge just to the side of the speaker port. Basically the coefficient of friction is too low and it gently slides off.
It is better (but not perfect) turned landscape; you might improve by gently removing the platic ridge, but I decided not to mess about and returned the item.
Da-i-jo-u-bu! (no problem) as they say here in Japanese-o-land!!
K... you have got a point there, thanks man, so I got the black silicone case for the TG01 from http://www.amazon.co.uk/BLACK-SOFT-...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1276388504&sr=1-1. The back should be now relatively flat, I really appreciate your advice, I don't think I would have picked up on that. I assume with the silicone that it will be more sticky too. I plan on only having the device in portrait on my desk, I will let you all know of any issues if I have any, I will post some pics of the device in the cradle on my desk. I also ordered a right angle micro USB plug-in for my device so it doesn't look strange on my desk. The angled plug-ins are looking really cool, have a look on eBay, just search for "angle micro usb" and you will have about 4 different types of angled USB plug-ins. I think that having an angled adapter will make the device look really sharp sitting on the cradle rather than having this cord stick 5 inches outta the side of the machine.

Inductive charging mod SUCCESS!!

I finally got it working! I had to use the usb port so I'll need to get a touchstone for work, home and car but it is pretty sweet. It is pretty straight forward, but the hardest part was cutting the usb in half and soldering on it. I used http://www.qianqin.de/2011/09/18/samsung-galaxy-s-wireless-inductive-charging-mod/ as a reference. The wiring for the (+) is in the pics, but for the (-) I just slipped the black wire through one of the small holes in the bottom of the back cover and sandwiched it between the sim card and the metal sim holder to gain a ground.
I know it's not elegant, but I just wanted to share. As far as I know no one else has done this with a sensation.
Wow, that's pretty cool man.
Nice work mate, I love seeing people experiment and come up with new things
Nice!
I think there was another person that tried but didn't get it working because he was using his stock cover and also said he couldn't get past some of the wiring. I forget but I think it had to do with the sd card being in the way or something.
But good job in getting it done!
Can something like this be done to keep from cutting the usb?

Unless you have a industrial grade precision solder station I doubt it. The internals are too small and crowded unlike the HTC EVO or Incredible. Believe me I tried; my phone has been completely broken down around 4 times already.

That definitely would be easier than cutting into one, but the actual metal "plug" portion of the usb is too long. My pics are really blurry but I had to remove the pins, separate the inner plastic and outer metal, cut both in half and surgically bend the + pin into a square "J" shape, glue it in place, reinstall the metal casing and solder the pin to the wire without melting the plastic bit that holds the pin. It was a B!TCH!
Even though I cut the connector in half (actually closer to 2/5) it still sticks out just a bit unfortunately. There is a positive resistor inside the phone that could be used, but things are so tight that I doubt anyone short of a surgeon could solder to it.
nice job mate

Instead of soldering and dealing with melted plastic, is it possible to use conductive glue? I have never used something like this especially if I am trying to send some decent power though this.

I'm in the process of doing the same thing to my Sensation. I wanted to make sure that the Touchstone charger would support the weight of my phone in it's case, so I took the short cut of using parts from a microUSB charger to route from the induction coil terminals to the charge port. I'm halfway through routing all the necessary connections to go through the board instead of the charge port. In the attached picture, I've highlighted 2 test points that will let you route your +5v line into the board. I'll use the metal housing of the sim card reader to attach the ground.

Since the back of the phone is metal and its always going to be in a case I'm going to have to use pogo plugs or some other form of metal contacts to go through the back housing to allow me to pull off the case/back whenever I need. I'll have my charge port free to use over USB as well

Cheap ebay magnetic charger cable isn't that great!

I bought a couple of these from ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151247910444?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
The USB plug end is huge, and the magnet is very weak. It's OK if you leave it flat on the desk, but picking the phone up means it's more than likely going to fall off.
I'd be wary of this kind if you're thinking of getting one.
I'd like one with a very strong magnet so that I can plug it into a USB battery pack and leave it in my pocket without wondering whether the magnet connector has fallen off.
Any suggestions?
I also bought such a cable. Mine is actually pretty good so far. Magnet power is good enough and the overall cable is just as good as a standard Sony cable. And only 3 euros incl. shipping.

I don't think you will have any luck finding one like that, as the connector was never designed to be used as a stand alone cable, it was always meant to be inside a charging stand/dock. Even if the magnet is very strong when pulling straight out from the connector (like being able to lift the phone with it) it will still come off super easy if pulled at an angle.
Maybe you could buy a cheap dock, then cut some in it so that all that is left will be like a clamp that goes around the edge of the phone and holds the cable steady? Or maybe some cheap case where you can glue tha connector to the case and only use it when charging?
Are they no official magnetic charger available? Isn't anyone here using?

The only official magnetic charger is the DK32 charging dock. The cables that most people buy are the same cables that is inside the dock, but it's impossible to know whether they are original parts or just copies since Sony doesn't officially sell that cable as a separate unit. The ones that sellers claim to be originals could very well only be meant as replacement parts or a simple way for phone repair shops to charge the phones.
The magnet is weak and actually takes some effort to get it to align, I was hoping that it would suck itself in like a MagSafe connector does. It also charges at about 70% the speed of the original USB charging cable even when connected to the same ipad wallwart.
I'm unimpressed with my knock-off cable but for the price, I can accept the mediocre quality.

Well I paid 15 for mine (bought from a retailer) and they don't do refunds.
Lesson learnt...
What do you expect from such a small magnet? Imo it's quite strong already. I got this cable, which doesn't have a stronger magnet but aligns better, and it's cheap - I'm from Germany though: http://www.ebay.de/itm/-/291037184668
I also have the one the op has, with that one the phone started charging but it was so slow that it never finished. Modifiying the plastic and pins didn't help.
Not sure if it fits here, as my cable was not bought through ebay...
I got the OEM Magnetic Charging USB Cable for Sony Xperia Smartphone Black with Sony logo on the magnetic plug and it doesn't look too good: cheap to the looks and touch. The cable is thinner and feels flimsy compared to the USB charging cable that came stock with the phone. The magnet holds so-so but won't do too well when grabbing the phone, answering a call or whatever. The USB plug is huge, feels and looks cheap as well and can't be fully inserted into the charger; a bit of the metal part will stick out, that is.
I didn't do a full charge so far, so, can't commend on that part. I didn't measure the time but from what it felt like, the magnetic cable charges pretty fast - I'd say about the same rate as the stock micro USB cable (both with stock wall socket charger). But pay attention if you move the phone; the magnetic plug comes off really easy and might cause some bad surprise the next morning (the moment you wake up and notice your phone died on you and didn't wake you up ... about 2 hours ago, which was about an hour before you should've left to go to work and so on).
Now, if I'm not mistaken, witrigs says somewhere on their site that there would be huge difference between the Original OEM  cable and the cheaper 3rd party ones the also offer. Honestly, I can't imagine the really cheap ones are much worse (as far as look & feel and usability goes).
I bought two of the following a few weeks back (for work and home) and overall am quite happy. The magnet is reasonably strong - I can lift the phone to check an email etc without it falling off - not sure about a phone call with it attached though...

The magnetic ability is okay, not very strong but if you let the phone on your desk, it´s no problem.
I don´t know if a stronger magnet can damage the phone.
I placed a cable of this in my car-holder and fixed it with a little point of glue and there´s no problem with vibrations while driving.
And also good at this cable:
You can not reverse polarities!
I hope i could help you.

However, for my order, delivery took about 2 weeks, which is pretty fast compared to most of my previous orders from China (usually 3 to 4 weeks without the customs interfering).

If I were you I wouldn't... The cable has an extremely weak magnet, it comes off at the slightest touch. It would be impossible to use whilst the phone is charging. I could have got the really cheap cable from Amazon but because of the reviews about it's weak magnet I instead got a more expensive cable from mobilefun.co.uk. Unfortunately it was the same poor quality cable.

It's not that the magnet itself is weak, it's rather the design of it.
I can lift my phone with the magnet, even shake a little up and down without it falling off.
However, as you might know the easiest way to remove a magnet is to tilt/angle it, which the design of this magnet makes way too easy.
After all, the entire connector was designed around being mounted inside a charging stand, where the phone's angle to the connector would never change. Using it as a separate cable was never intended, the cable you can buy for example at dx-box is the very same cable that is supposed to be inside that charging stand.
I think if they designed a cable where the plastic around the magnet and the connectors was laying flush against the phone, tilting the cable would become less of an issue.
That said, I can use the phone just fine with the magnet connected as long as I don't pull on the cable, as the magnet is strong enough to handle the weight of the cable with no problem.

It's not that the magnet itself is weak, it's rather the design of it.
I can lift my phone with the magnet, even shake a little up and down without it falling off.

Yup you are 100% right. I can indeed lift the phone up using the connector. The problem is with the tilt/angle as you've already mentioned above.
any of you is using thie cable from witrigs ?
http://www.witrigs.com/custom-magnetic-charging-cable-for-sony-xperia-z1-compact-black
i am also considering the magnector X, but if i plan to replace back by glass one, then purchase of this from witrigs is better economically. But don't know how does it works? How is it with charging speed and battery life?
and the last one, anyone using this original cable? and how much is it "original" ?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Ori..._PDA_Cables_Adapters&var=&hash=item3f32e3085b
I've bought one from Amazon and returned it, the cable was falling off at the slightest touch and it was even difficult to set right to charge.
I wanted it for charging the phone in my car, which already has a usb socket adapter, but with the falling out problem it was a no-go from the start.
On the plus side, I ended up with a Supremery charging dock, which is cheaper than Sony and works better (for me at least).
I don't use it in the car - just to be clear
but was it the same from amazon that i linked, or something far cheaper, "branded " by Sony ?
How is it with battery life on Supremery charging dock? Do you see shorter life and longer charging? Am asking because some guys were complaining for those on not original dock.
Thanks
Try this one out, apparently its got fantastic build quality and a very strong magnet.
Every review I have seen has given it 5/5 and most people mentioned buying another for the car/office etc :good:

I really would like to buy this Magnector X cable but I have not found a good way to buy and ship this to Austria/Europe. Any ideas where I can buy this with realistic shipping prices to get this inside the european union?
I bought 2 pieces of Magnector directly from producer: http://magnector.com/?product=magnector-x-adaptersony-xperia-magnetic-adapter
Calculating with delivery to Slovakia it was around 26€.
I am more than satisfied with this product and totally recommend it.
You can have only problem if you are using some case. It is designed for use without it.
Just order this, http://dx-box.com/high-performance-...e-magnetic-connection-and-charging-speed.html

What do you mean by that?
What do you want to tell us with that?
Do you mean "Magnector X" ?
The Question is: Is it nevertheless a good product?
(I don't really care if they just copy&paste the description of another "premium" product)
I already ordered two of those cables so maybe I have wasted some euros on a cable no one of the posters above has ever tested?!

I have 3 of the dx-box ones:
http://dx-box.com/brand-new-magneti...dapter-for-sony-xperia-z1-xperia-z-ultra.html
The magnet may not be ask strong as the High Performance one, but its plenty strong enough for me. I use one in my car and the lead has never detached even when I have gone over pot holes or bumps in the road.
Also, at home I find it stays attached well enough for everyday usage.
Ordered from ebay same product as Sony official except it didn't have Sony logo and was like 3 times cheaper.
I have received the magnector cable and can confirm that the magnet is very powerfull. One can easily lift up the phone by the cable.
It doesn't however automatically snap on to the two (tiny) charging pins. It takes a little bit of practice to make it work.
