BT Keyboard
BT Barcode Scanner (For Work)
Xbox 360 Controller
Various USB Thumb Drives, MicroSDs, and HDDs
Video Adapter
Not too many but enough
The ones I currently use are all that I need surprisingly
HDMI to VGA adapter
USB ethernaet adapter
USB stick
USB HDD
Office Canon Printer over network
I use the new Microsoft Wedge mouse (love it), USB DVD burner in bag (just in case), and a new Cisco USB to Ethernet adapter (just in case). Oh, and of course the Microsoft Type cover (love it).
This Surface Pro is by far the hottest tech toy of the decade. The screen is rocking on this bad motha!
I use my Surface Pro as a Desktop Replacement, so I need a lot of peripherals when im at home and I don't want it to take an eternity to plug everything back when I sit at my desk.
For that reason, I bought a Toshiba Dynadock u3.0 where I plugged all my peripherals, and then I only need to connect a single USB 3.0 cable in my Surface to get:
- External Mouse
- External Keyboard
- DVI for External 24" screen
- DisplayLink External USB Video card, where I connect another screen
- External Hard Drive
- External DVD Reader/Writer(uses 2 x USB port)
- XBOX Controller
- Headset
- 7ports USB Hub
So I end up having all these peripherals on my Surface and Triple-Screens.

Great suggestions on the usb3 hub. Does the Ethernet work?
When I'm mobile, my type cover and pen, and a whole lot of SkyDrive space (and my Rig Kontrol 3 for band practice and gigs - for those using Native Instrument's Guitar Rig (5 Pro here) with Rig Kontrol: you need the beta USB driver for a noise-less sound, the power on the USB 3 port messes with the signal on the USB 2.0 Rig Kontrol).
"Docked" on my desk
- Type cover
- Pen
- BT Mouse
- Mini Display to HDMI adapter to an HDMI 27" monitor
- USB 3.0 4-port powered hub
- USB 2.0 7-port powered hub
- iLok key
- USB 3.0 2 TB external drive (music recording)
- USB 2.0 1 TB external drive (backup / storage)
- USB 3.0 LG BluRay R/W external drive
- Headphone jack is used as line out (line in to an older reciever powering 7.1 sound in my home office)
I will pick up another monitor in the coming months to run 3 at a time, this one over USB (but I haven't looked into it yet )
For now I'm using the type cover, and it works well enough. I need the practice to get totally used to it. I may put an external keyboard into the mix when my proficiency gets up to snuff w/ the type cover.

The gtablet has a USB host port so I was curious what might be supported by the base kernel. Here is what I've tried so far. Please add your devices to the thread.
- Logitech USB keyboard
- 16Gb USB flash drive
- 100Gb USB hard drive
iPod works
My 30G iPod works when disk use is enabled.
Also working:
Dell USB keyboard
Sandisk 2G flash drive
ATP USB SD card reader
has anyone tried connecting a USB hub and multiple devices?
Wont work (sadly)
Canon 40d
Although at first I was all excited when the camera said "busy"
Sandisk drives will work IF you have removed the U3 crap off of it
Aaron
Jutauser...what brand and model of external hard drive did you use? I'm decided on whether I should get a larger microSD or just use an external USB HD
I'm on on Vegan beta 3-
Working
-Droid 1 SD card- it charges it too.
-SIIG JK-US0312-S1 Black USB Mini Multimedia Keyboard- I just bought for my gTab
not working
-new apple USB keyboard
-Logitech USB headset with mic- was hoping for Skype
My USB mouse works on the VEGAn build, but not on the Tnt Build (not even the new one, sadly).
I have a USB splitter cable coming from HK, in the next few weeks - want to see if I can split off to use both a USB keyboard and mouse on VEGAn.
Logitech trackball (mouse) model unknown due to missed sticker works great on Vegan rom!

I just tried connecting my monitor (which is basically a 2 port + card reader powered usb hub) to the gtab and got mouse and keyboard to work simultaneously.
Working:
Logitech G9 mouse
Logitech G5 mouse
Logitech G15 keyboard
Some HP compact mouse
Not working:
Canon 7D
Anyone tried a non-powered USB hub? Also anyone know if you can map the right mouse button? Would make ScummVM more awesome than it already is.
I just tried a wireless lite touch keybord and it works perfect!!
Vegan-Tab b3
Also a regular usb memory works.

I've got a Sandisk Cruzer 8GB with U3 that works fine.
Hi All,
I have seen many posts regarding using external HDDs asking which ones work and which ones don’t. So I thought I would share my experience which I think (hope) would cover most situations and answer most questions.
This is what I used:
1. 1TB 3.5”external HDD USB 2.0 with its own power supply (like mostly all 3.5”external drives need their own power supply)
2. 500GB 2.5”Seagate Caviar Blue external USB 2.0 HDD. Runs fine on a standard PC/laptop USB port without any extra power supply
3. 128GB 2.5”Crucial SSD in an external USB 3.0 HDD enclosure. Runs fine on a standard PC/laptop USB port without any extra power supply.
4. 256 GB 1.8”Samsung S1 external HDD USB 2.0. Runs fine on a standard PC/laptop USB port without any extra power supply. A 1.8”HDD is often used in a HDD MP3 player like the classic IPod.
I have used the above using the original Samsung Note 10.1 USB Connector kit, so I can’t make comments regarding other connector kits.
I also use the Paragon NTFS&HFS+ app from the Google Play Store to be able to mount the HDD which were all formatted in NTFS. Without this app I could not mount the HDDs.
My Results:
1. The 1TB 3.5”external HDD connected directly to the USB adaptor and runs fine using its own power supply.
2. The 500GB 2.5”Seagate Caviar Blue external HDD connected directly to the USB adapter did not work. The Note 10.1 produced the error “High powered device”. However when connected via a powered USB hub (i.e. with extra external power supply), then this HDD worked fine.
3. The 128GB 2.5”Crucial SSD in an external USB 3.0 HDD enclosure connected directly to the USB adapter did not work. The Note 10.1 produced the error “High powered device”. However when connected via a powered USB hub (i.e. with extra external power supply), then this HDD worked fine.
4. 256 GB 1.8”Samsung S1 external HDD USB 2.0 connected directly to the USB adapter did work. It appears these 1.8” HDDs are considered “low power” and it did work directly connected to the USB adapter. This also makes sense as these HDDs are used in many MP3 HDD players and could have a low power requirement.
Summary:
I have used 3.5” and 2.5” HDDs/SSDs with USB 2.0 and 3.0 interfaces, and I could get them all to work either directly or with an extra powered USB hub. Using a powered USB hub is a pain but at least it works.
Hope this helps in answering peoples questions whether it is possible to connect external HDDs.
Good stuff...thanks.
You need to use a USB splitter cable and connect the portable drives to an external power source. I do it all the time with my 750GB Seagate 2.5'" drive on the go. I have a portable battery with 2 USB sockets. The external battery provides power.
Besides, this has been discussed at length here and is no secret.
I'll stick to my wireless Seagate 500gb HDD... And when I have time to mod it, I'll make it either 1 or 2 TB....
After tons of tries, the OTG function still not working in the way I expected, at least simply plug the USB stick to the OTG wire won't work(USB mice and keyboards work though, even my Logitech wireless mouse with an unifying connector works), but I noticed something really funny - - with a hub installed between the USB sticks and my Q, most of the USB sticks works, but not every hub, it's the hub in poor quality and build with bounded chip that works, I got a Fullspeed hub which have a Etron chip soldered on it but it never worked with my Q. What's more, if I connect my Q to the low-speed-bonded-chip-hub and then to the Full-speed-Etron-hub and then to a USB disk,it works!
The only possible reason I can imagine is that the OTG function of Q doesn't support any devices running on Fullspeed, and it needed a converter like a low-speed hub.
Any solution to this? Cuz carrying a extra hub around seems dumb!
BTW after upgraded to JB, I need the app 'OTG Helper' to mount the usb storage devices (in 4.0.4 Q will mount it itself), but mice and keyboards work just fine without this tool. And even with this tool, Q can only detect a SD card reader, but can't mount it (says no device found) and format the card to NTFS formation won't work either.Neither dose the USB hard drive(pressing the mount button and after a while it says the OTG didn't response but the busy LED of the hard drive flashs at regular intervals).
My CX-919/Measy U2C-D/Belkin Ethernet/USB 2.0 Hub combination: "Frankendongle"
I have been tinkering around with my CX-919/Measy U2C-D dock since I purchased them and wanted to show off my results thus far.
I wanted to add features while keeping the whole system as compact as possible. I also didn't want to block any of the connectors or ports so that I could maintain maximum flexibility and usability in the system.
The CX-919 has its own Micro SD slot and the Measy dock adds an additional full-size SD slot as well.
I would call this system 99% complete, as I'm building a custom cable that will bring power to the USB hub via the micro USB connector on the dock.
I'm using the coaxial power connector next to the micro USB connector with a 2.4-amp adapter for power. The two are hardwired in parallel so by utilizing the micro USB connector for power I can fully power the USB 2.0 Hub.
When the cable is finished the system will be considered "complete".
(I have the pieces here at home. but the "good heat shrink tubing" is at work so I'm waiting in order to make a better looking cable.)
I present for your entertainment: Frankendongle
The system:
*CX-919 Android Mini PC -modified with Finless ROM and copper SOC heatsinks. (A very fast and stable runner)
*Measy U2C-D dock -modified to allow full horizontal rotation and a layer of Velcro for mounting other devices
*Belkin USB-to-Ethernet dongle -modified with Velcro to secure it to the U2C-D dock
*USB 2.0 Hub (make/model unverified -eBay purchase, but any Android-compatible hub that fits the space will do!) -modified with a longer USB cable to allow for use with this system and Velcro to secure it to the U2C-D dock
Top view showing off some of the system's footprint and copper SOC heat sinks.
Front and rear views.
I wanted one free USB port on the rear for use with a USB hard drive.
The dock acts as a USB Hub on its own, and I wanted the Hard Drive and Ethernet adapters to only go through one USB hub for better performance. It's for this reason they are plugged directly into the dock itself and not through the additional USB hub .
Currently the system is being used with an iHome wireless keyboard/mouse for which you see the receiver plugged into the 1st USB port on the hub.
Side view.
This shows the Ethernet connector as well as the USB Hub's coaxial power port.
When completed, the custom power cable plug into this port to fully power the hub and allow for compatibility with the widest array of USB gear.
I use the system as a secondary one for surfing the web and watching videos when I don't want to fire up my big Windows PC. It also works great for retro gaming which I'm fond of.
It's certainly not the prettiest setup, but like I stated earlier it is very compact and works well for it's intended purpose.

Looks neat. Were you able to complete the wiring with the heat shrink tubing? Not that it needs it, but was curious.

thats loook greating job
Hry guys. New to Nvidia Shield. Was womdering if you can use the USB charging \ data cable and plug it into the usb port on the tv. Would this work? And do you need a special app to use it ?
I imagine that unless you are talking about reading some video files on your storage and playing those on the TV, no, it wouldn't work like that.
However, the Shield Portable does have a mini-HDMI port along with its micro-USB port. So you could just plug it into an HDMI port and you would have an instant mirror of your screen. In fact this is how you start up the "Console Mode" where you hook it to your TV and a charger, and you attach a Shield Wifi-Direct controller or a BT controller (or a wired USB controller I guess via a split charge/USB-OTG cable), and you have a nice way to stream your games from GRID, your comp, or native from the Shield to your big-screen TV.
TL;DR - No, wouldn't work. Don't need it though, you have an HDMI out on it.
