If you want to use the update, I would just manually flash it, not download it OTA (of course, you wouldn't be using the custom ROM any more after doing that).

so.. i bought my nexus s 4g today, it will be here in a little over a week. do you guys think we will have full root access and maybe a stock rom that we can tweak by then?
i assume clockwork will be the recovery we will need to use? sorta excited here.
all i need is a stock rooted rom and a custom kernel with sbc and ill take care of the themeing.
we also are going to need a cdma section on here for the nexus s.
Excited huh?
Assuming existing CWM recovery works, all you have to do to root is use fastboot to unlock bootloader and flash CWM recovery, then in CWM flash the SuperUser zip. That's it!
SBC is an HTC thing. You won't find it around here.
Get your Android SDK ready now, and you be rooted within 10 minutes of getting the phone!

actually i was hoping some new nexus s 2.3.4 owner might be able to tell me if gingerbreak.apk works on 2.3.4, because if that works then its perfect for people just looking for root...

like i said we will need a cdma section here for rooting & flashing the recovery/roms.
i hope we get some decent devs for the phone as well. i see netarch makes some kernels for gsm.
How did you order it already? ? I though it comes out the 8th.

Earlier today my phone kept trying to download new firmware from VZW. I was running stock root. I flashed a new Rom and that hasn't re-occurred.

Would have been interesting to see what the url for the update being offered was. You can usually find it in the logcat listings for the phone when it's being offered.
What version of the stock ROM were you on?
Did it say how large the update was?
1.103.65.7 is the firmware I was running. It didn't say how big the file was either. I freaked and didn't want to lose root so I flashed another Rom.

hello, I'm considering putting CM 7 on wifes phone. MY does not have an "update"package which would receive an OTA. Will a custom ROM inhibit this rather remote possibility. I think if this phone ever gets an update it will be via a computer update program and not OTA.

Yes it will block ota's. It will never have 2.3 unless you put cm-7 on there it seems.

The CM 7 vs Stock ROM for activation.
The CM 7 ROMS do not do activation/ provisioning right? One has to go to Stock to do that?.
Thanks

You are correct. That's a good reason to always have a stock ROM (or backup) at least on standby if necessary.
I find stock ROM easy to backup and restore, the problem for me is the recovery. I'd like to be able to backup my recovery and make a flash able zip.just don't know how to.

You mean, the recovery you boot into? There should be no reason for you to change it very much.. Although didn't b_randon14 manage it? I don't think it's possible, as up until this point I've never seen a flashable Recovery.
I recommend miui for MT. It works really well. And lasts me about all day. I'm using the 10/28 update

So the question is in the title. Will the update brick or indoor my phone? If I wanted to install a rooted version does anyone know of a working mirror?
Thanks in advance.

From all the threads in general, it would seem the update does unroot your phone. Also from those threads it would seem flashing a custom recovery and, subsequently, the su zip will give you root back. I don't know of a pre-rooted version out yet.
i just upgraded to ics a little while ago using rom manager, i had to go back to stock 2.3.3 which unrooted my phone but did not lock the phone . I was wondering the same thing and that is how the heck do i root my phone now lol. my phone still shows the unlocked lock on the boot up screen under "Google" but i dont have SU permissions anymore. if I still have su.zip file and cwm can i just use fastboot and flash the img and su.zip ?
What if I don't have my original files to roll back to stock GB? I just downloaded the version Koush put up on his twitter...will that allow me to flash in CWM and update?

Download stock images from from manager then update to 2.3.6 then you can flash the one from koush's twitter.
Root will be lost after update. Currently flashing su.zip wont work. Still trying to figure it out.

We might just have to re*root when they release the info.

Let me ask you also, I'm currently running Alpha13 w/ Francisco.Franco kernel. Is the official that much smoother that I should lose my root?

Does anyone from Brazil (or some near country) received the ICS OTA? I'm back to 2.3.6 - just to see how the update is going here - and not even a clue about the OTA. Tried check in, clearing data of Google Framework, etc... I know I can flash the OTA but would be nice to see some better update support here
Thanks!

Ha..ha....ha...... not funny
Did you flash a zip that contains stock kernel, stock rom and stock recovery? And of course did the superuser app appear in the app drawer after first boot?
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk 2
hehe im not a noob on it. i have installed the images from google ( https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#soju ) without superuser, so im on stock 2.3.6 with bootloader unlocked only and CWM touch (this shouldnt matter for OTA AFAIK).
EDIT: oops, forgot to delete the install-recovery.sh so im with stock bootloader as well

Hi! I'm from Uruguay.
First of all, lets make it clear that I'm a Big NOOB on android. My Nexus S is my first android phone.
I've a brand new Nexus S, updated with Android 2.3.6. I've tried to update over OTA, but the phone displays that the software is up to date, giving me no chance to update to ICS.
I didn't make any modification in the software of my phone.
Thanks.
