So for a bit I've been looking into tablets, and the G Tablet seems like its the right one for me (great hardware, already a great amount of work from the Devs here on the system) so I think I'll be picking one up after the holidays.
My question though: I remember reading a week or two ago (when doing my initial research) reading somewhere that the G Tablet could run Windows 7 in the future. Is this true? I originally strayed away from Win 7 tablets because I know how much of a hassle they can be, and after putting Android onto my HTC Vogue I went towards a droid tablet. But I also realised that if I could get a Win 7 boot on the tablet also (like one of the other tablets out there with a dual boot) then that would be great to possibly run some of my graphic programs.
So, does anyone think/know if setting up a dual boot on the G Tablet is possible? Has anyone started thinking about developement on it already?

Viewsonic is suppose to be coming out with a DIFFERENT tablet that can dual boot, but not the Gtab..
The Viewpad 10 is what they were coming out with. Don't know if it still is. The big issue for me is there is only Android 1.6 right now for the X86 cpu's. You also have to deal with fans, and the extra weight. I wanted a Windows 7 tablet but not so much anymore.

Yeah I know about that one, but strayed away from that because it was pretty much unavailable and more pricey (if memory serves).
I swear I remember reading it somewhere that the G Tablet would be capable of running Windows 7 in the near(ish) future, and I'm just trying to figure out if that is true or not.
Only if Microsoft rewrites Win 7 for the ARM processor and reduces the Bloat.
:-D I am sure at some point with all these Tegra 2 tablets someone will port Ubuntu onto the G-tab! This would be amazing considering all the tablet support that they have built into the recent netbook remix.

Once we have kernel source, we'll be able to do it....
Ubuntu is a definite possibility since it runs on ARM and the Android kernel itself is Linux based. But, just like any kernel change, the devs would need the source so that's the biggest obstacle.
The EEE Transformer is the pick for me i think, have just bought an ipad2 a few weeks back and it sucks (no jailbreak = no customization) [No offence Apple lovers]
Tho i would love to have a Windows7 tablet with the EEE's AWSOME dock, SD Reader, USB ect ect, but also run android on it. will it be possible to dual-boot the two OS' ?

No. windows seven doesnt.run on arm hardware. Windows 8 might. But no one.knows when that is being released. But to answer ur question. No though you can remotly connect to a pc

Definitely not possible currently, as nobody has access to a Windows 7 build compiled for ARM processors, at least other than Microsoft themselves and perhaps a few outside people doing testing for them...
Eventually, an ARM build of Win7 or a future Win release (depends whom you ask) is on the cards (http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/04/21/us-dealtalk-intel-idUSTRE73K7ZZ20110421 "Microsoft's plans to make future versions of Windows 7 compatible with ARM is another reason why Intel needs to move faster to get into Microsoft devices, Shah said"), but I'd guess you won't be able to buy it retail, and even if you can, whether or not you can install it depends on a lot more than just whether the processor architecture is right.
I'd give this a chance of "slim to none".

Your best alternative to a Windows 7-running tablet similar to the transformer would be the Acer Iconia W500, which is similar to the A500 except for the fact that it runs windows. It will also have a keyboard dock accessory, although i personally prefer the ASUS offering
Rumor has it that the Eee Pad Slider (transformer with a slide out keyboard buit into the back) will have both android (ARM) and windows 7 (AMD fusion I believe) based models.
The dual-form nature of this item would fit a dual-boot scenario perfectly. Boot into Android when used as a tablet, boot into Ubuntu when docked. Just curious as to the possibility of this.
As far as I know, Ubuntu supports ARM architecture, so the Tegra 2 chip should work well with it. Ubuntu 11.04 was just released with the integrated Unity interface, which looks wonderful with the touchscreen: http://unity.ubuntu.com/projects/utouch/
The Unity 2D interface should fly on the Tegra 2, even if the Unity 3D mode lags.
Now I know that on the Xoom, we were able to run Ubuntu on a VNC server and connect to it locally, but that is obviously not an ideal solution, due to VNC's weakness, and the general inefficiency of it.
Are there any devs working on something like this so far? I am sure there would be a very sizable audience for something like this. I'd be happy to do any necessary testing, and I'm sure more will as well. I also wouldn't mind taking this as an opportunity to get involved with the dev community (I have a thorough background in CS, just no experience with this specifically), I'd be happy if anyone were to take me under their wing. =)

I was just thinking about this yesterday. Dual booting Ubuntu and Android would make this the perfect device for me.

I'm tempted to wait until this is guaranteed to happen before buying this thing. I need a new portable device for developing on the go, and I also want and need a Honeycomb device for testing apps and casual content consumption.
At the same time though, if anyone knows of a site or thread dedicated to making this dual-boot happen (similar to the dedicated Toshiba AC100 page here http://tosh-ac100.wetpaint.com/page/Ubuntu ), I wouldn't mind learning all about it and potentially help if I can, so please share.

There are some devs who definitely pulled this off on the Atrix and I had Ubuntu on my phone so I'm sure we can get it on the transformer. I'll try to find them and see if similar methods can be used.
It'll take years but I don't see why it wouldn't work. If I can do this on my old ass wm6.5 phone then it's possible on the TF!
Maybe it wont take years, but more of these tablets have to hit the market. Still so many people waiting on their preorders, me included.
I think that there might be quite the interest in making this happen. I remember reading somewhere that Ubuntu allready runs on the Tegra2, so why should it be far into the future before we see it running on the Transformer?

So far i'm quite impressed with this little tablet. It crunches bytes as fast as i can throw them, and customizing it was easy enough. Although with the dock station and Tegra 2 it does feel more like a netbook than a tablet.
Android 3.0 IMO is the best compromise between a desktop and mobile phone OS. Although it's expandability is not quite what i would wish it to be. Possibly once more developers gear their programs for the higher resolutions and more powerful CPUs this will change. For now dual booting Ubuntu and Android would be perfect.
I'm on board with any project coming about to make this happen, and would offer up my hardware and feedback for beta testing. Hope to see a dedication in this direction soon!

Yeah, it's VNC. That's not that hard, we're talking about straight booting INTO Ubuntu.
i have this image from my desire, which boots linux xlde (or something) i cant get it to connect to that image. Pockecloud just get Server disconnected.... maybe another image.. actually that was loading it from removable MicroSD, im now going to try copying to the internal memory "SDCARD" as that would be what the script would have orignally been setup for. I will post results as soon as this has finished pasting the files...
EDIT: still cant get this to work, seems like terminal is ending too quickly which i think means the loopback memory doesnt work, i think thats how it works anyway.
No lock with WYSE pocket cloud or android vnc, i think we need another build for honeycomb, well not so much the OS but the Tegra chip instead.

Maybe it's not all that farfetched getting Ubuntu to run on this device, or any other Tegra2 base tablet.

looks like dual booting may be fairly difficult; I wouldn't mind soloing ubuntu touch os on mine...
I think dual booting may be difficult, but I think chain booting (right terminology?) from Android first and then into Ubuntu would probably be possible.
I don't think many people understand how hard it will be to create a bootable version of Ubuntu. VNCing is easy for the most part.

Is the VNC version that bad? Is it very slow or the picture is not full color? I'd like to use it maybe for Open Office (or something lighter) and some programming in text editor.
Looks like there has been significant progress on this. backtrack has been released for arm.. its a security-centric distro, but its built on an ubuntu base.
I'm downloading the img now.. dont know about dual boot though. guess someone needs to port grub over first =)

Technically? Yes, I think so. The WinRT version of the surface uses Tegra 3, so it'd be like doing an Android SDK port.
Legally? Absolutely not. Asus didnt pay for the Infinity to be licensed for winRT. If it does get done, you certainly wont be hearing about it here.
Then again, that hasnt stopped the HD2 people from freely discussing and using WP7 here, so maybe I"m missing something.
Thanks thats good to know. Someone mentioned it that it is possible to have Android and Windows 8 on the Asus Infinity but I thought I would ask on here for clarification. Sounds like its the Tab to get with this possibility instead of a Win 8 Tab which everyone knows won't be long until there here also.

I'm not so sure about that. WinRT is closed source, so any attempts to get it working will be kludgy if the HD2's WP7 port (and Android SDK ports in general) is any indication. You'll probably have much better luck getting a native WinRT/Win8 tablet and hacking Android onto it.
Could definitely see Ubuntu working on it at some point though.

I'd rather see Ubuntu than Windows. I have a Windows laptop...I don't need a Windows tablet lol. This is my performance device, the tablet is my fun device (that I'm going to use for taking notes as well)

If history is any indication, we'll get Ubuntu. The TF101 got it natively, a TF201 native version is in progress, and if you dont mind a somewhat slow UI you could always run it in a chroot with root and vnc.

Nice, I'd love to run Ubuntu on this thing, especially if it runs nice with the dock. Then I basically have a netbook lol. I haven't really gotten into Ubuntu too much, but I'd love to try it. I have no room to install it on my laptop lol.

How much tablet-optimized is Ubuntu? Is there a difference between running Ubuntu and Windows 7 under a 10" FHD tablet? (apart from commandline and the obvious)

Depends entirely on how you have things set up, but in general Ubuntu isnt that great as a tablet OS unless your using Untiy which isnt exactly light on ram use. The appeal here is more for dock owners seeking a desktop like experience.
I guess it would be similar to Win7, since both would make use of on-screen keyboards but otherwise show a mouse oriented desktop.
Compared to Win8, its a bit kludgy since a native install of Ubuntu would have to reboot into Android for a tablet UI whereas Win8 has metro. A chroot install would be able to easily drop in and out of the desktop, but then you'd have to use VNC which means the desktop UI would be kinda slow. Good enough for, say, office or photo editing but not for viewing videos or playing games.

Actually you could install it to a USB drive...no problem....for your laptop.

I wanna know if you can install and run ubuntu NATIVELY on the galaxy note 10.1 because I know people have installed ubuntu natively on the Asus Transformer pad, and I dont see why cant this device handle it.
So developers please answer this!!!!

Hi! I'm also looking for a native build of Ubuntu for the Galaxy Note 10.1 but what I wanna ask you is the performance of chroot. Are you able to type in LibreOffice without a lag? I'm one click away from ordering a device and I really need a full office suite for educational reasons (I'm a student).
What is more, my own hopes are about another way of getting better Ubuntu. The project you use (linux on android) aims to have native video output for some devices and it might be really better than a fully native Ubuntu. The GUI will be fast but at the same time Android will stay one click away with full support etc. What do you think?

im a student too. my aim was to buy the TF300T at first. then when i went to the shop, the staff told me that the TF300T batch was full of returns because it was pretty sh**ty So i decided to buy the N8010 (Galaxy Note 10.1)
which is really better than the transformer because it has 2gb ram all the other cool features.like s pen and all that. i wanted to buy the transformer because it came with the keyboard dock which you can turn it into sorta netbook then i could take it to school or something. i was planning on installing ubuntu on it but ye.
so when i got this galaxy note 10.1, i rooted it and ran ubuntu like mentioned about. honestly, there is a slight lag but its not that extreme. only like milisecond(s) lag. *no other apps were running except for terminal emulator, vnc viewer and complete linux installer.
i think this is capable of doing more because literally ran a minecraft server in there LOL it loaded up pretty fast. but i havent connected into it and played yet. youtube video is working. which means it has flash support. my screen protector should arrive today so i can play around more with it. i'll load up ubuntu again. post some screen shots and maybe a video if u need one
the resources manages shows all four cores in the cpu and shows 1.8* of ram. which is good. and more than 1.2gb was available when i was running the office suite that was there.
Summary:
This is good for a start, im hoping to see developers start working on Galaxy Note 10.1 more and more. (i think its just this is still new cuz it only came out recently)
This device is really good for school. Snote app has so many features infact the device has 'samsung features' which i still havent touched on
Hoping to see some thirdparty keyboard docks for this since the samsung one is about 90-100 dollars (USD) i believe and about about 120-150dollars here in australia :/
I think the reason for the transformer pad to have native support cuz asus gave out the source code on their website ? *once i was in there website and it told me to choose the OS between android and other os*
which i belive u can install another os pretty much.
asus also had kinda a bios sorta menu when u boot it up.

In the case of Transformers, ASUS had open-sourced the bootloader and it was capable of booting something different than Android from scratch. That's a different story for Samsung GN 10.1, but we have a chance for native build since Samsung is developing drivers for the Exynos platform and more or less the bootloader they have is open-sourced or cracked.
As for the OFFTOPIC about learning, thank you a lot for your reply! If you can post a video of LibreOffice typing experience, it would be nice but there are a lot on YouTube already and impression is more important than videos. Personally, I have used on other N-trig tablets LectureNotes (non-free app from market) and Quill(fully open-source) and I find them many times better than S Note.
BTW, once Canonical should release the Ubuntu for Android official project, m?

Hello,
If you want to root the Stock ICS XSA for N8010, you will have to download the firmware from : http://www.hotfile.com/dl/177420056/592b6c1/N8010XWALI6_N8010XSAALI1_XSA.zip.html and root it your self.
I have attached the rooting files (thanks to zedomax ) and extract the files to a folder. and follow zedomax's instructions.

BUT this will not get rid of the Samsung user interface. If you want to get rid of the STOCK SAMSUNG STUFF, you will have to consider flashing CM10

Great news for tablet owners. Ubuntu will support Nexus 7. So Tegra 3 devices first and maybe Exinox later...
I really hope Team Hacksung will jump into this and make out tablet the best device ever. It will be much better then any W8 RT device because of Ubuntu ARM repositories, lots and lots of app (Libre Office, Gimp, VLC..etc).

I just bought this about a week ago and I am loving it. I am going to college and working on electrical engineering and about to take more c++ classes. Do I have to run Ubuntu natively to use a C++ program, or whast the best way?

It would be better if there was a native distro of Ubuntu for this. Ubuntu running on top of android maybe laggy (with your requirements). I still dont understand why developers arnt looking into this If u have a good internet connection at home you can use Splashtop to stream your pc into the tablet. all the touch features work. Its free for local use but if u want to use it remotely (pc at home and tablet at workplace) theres a membership for it.

I rekon since note 10.1 is abit new they havent made native ubuntu. I got rid of samsungs os and installed cyanogenmod 10 on it. Its jellybean .and way more smoother and faster. Yes pressure sensitivity is working. U can also use the stylus as the cursor (mouse) while hovered on top of the screen without touching the screen. Minor bugs but i use it and i use lecturenotes from the google play for my school... I wrote a tut on how to install cyanogenmod since people couldnt flash that rom thru clockworkmod. Hope this helps
