Guys, i've the gray version since 4 days.
I've preferred the gray because of chipping issue on the black.
I've managed it with maximum (maniacal) attention,
never dropped
never hitted
never rubbed
and now i see a small chipping on the sharp edge
i've read in many forums that this issue is only related to the black micro arc ozidated coating, that the gray version does not have.
I looked for official information from HTC website but I have found anything that suggest a different process for the 2 versions.
How can I be sure that is not the same "chipping issue" ?
Anyone experienced the same problem on the gray version?
(sorry for bad english.. and bad focus of the photo)

As far as I can see it's a manufacturing issue. When you took it out of the box, did you check all the edges of the phone or you observe this aspect later?
I've checked immadiately and i've not noticed.
however i was in office (not much time to spend on it)
and i was relatively "exited"
and relatively "sure" that it cannot be possible.
I can say that i'am pretty sure that, out of the box, there was no chipping.
I see, but I don't know what to "chip" on this shell. Maybe the paint because he has no ceramic coating like the other version.
We will have to see if other users are complaining about these issues also. I''ll report back at the end of this week or probably in the beginning of the next week when I'll receive my Metallic Grey HOS.
Nevertheless this issue is starting to make me nervous and suspicious regarding the quality of the 2012 HTC products (see the issues on HOX and the ones of Ceramic HOS).
the gray version doesnt have MAO so that cant be the reason for the chipping..
This is the first ive heard of chipping on the gray version....unless its been caused by the user, Keys in pocket, sharp nails or something lol
get a case on that badboy !! its so slippy without one, eventually you will drop it

I also thinked so, but i can assure, like i've already written, that is not a "user caused" problem.
and when you say "the gray version doesnt have MAO"
Where is the official source of this information?
Do you have a link to an official info by HTC?
i've searched for the official source (not forum/blog/users) but found nothing...
I dont have no info, I just thought the black version was MAO and the gray wasnt
In the MAO failure thread, they were all saying the gray doesnt suffer this,, I thought it was because it didnt have MAO,,,Unless its cause its gray you dont see it ?
EDIT: found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24655384&postcount=43 its not official, and it also proves how wrong i am lol
I've chatted with HTC assistance,
when i mentioned the "chipping issue" on the gray version they said that i've 30 days for a free change.
in the meanwhile I'll keep monitoring to see if the defect increases...

standard answer, they probably wait for more similar issues before doing something
The grey version should not have MAO process to its finish.
According to HTC website:
"This stunning phone comes in two exceptional finishes. The first goes through a special process that transforms the surface into a ceramic, super-dense finish that is five times more durable than stainless steel. The second finish is a gradient, anodized metal with a striking light-to-dark fade across the phone."
http://www.htc.com/uk/smartphones/htc-one-s/#overview
go to middle page, default shows "Amazing camera" section but you can choose the third option "Stunning design" and it's written there.
So TWO finishes should be different and the first one refers to MAO, so the second one should be non-MAO finish.
So this chipping is not MAO related on grey version.
I am very surprised to see it chipped, more likely to be a manufacturing defect given what you said that user causing it should be excluded.
I have had my first grey one s for about 3 weeks it looked new when I took it back to shop for exchange due to the "Tampered" sign in bootloader. My second one has been a week now, no "chipping" at all. Hope yours is just an exceptional case and glad to see HTC gave positive feedback to it.
thanks man, I was doubting my own instincts then lol

thanks! when this morning i've seen the small chipping i started thinking that the tho coatings were identical...
I've not been able to find this information
The grey One S does not "chip" but due it much too sharp designed edges it's really really prone to any contact with harder material. Ive been paying attention line hell and then dropped the phone in my pocket, heard the bitter sound I for sure didn't want to hear: my keys have been in the pocket. The phone just slided down in the pocket for a few centimeters and touched those keys once. I immediatley looked for it and hell, there are two tiny spots like on your picture. i can only tell that my Desire wasn't that prone. Indeed after a couple of months I was treating it kinda rough and it still looks very good..
I will use sandpaper around the top edge.... so I will not have to worry about
Hey all,
Quick question here... Firstly, yes, I am a noob. I have an HTC One X on AT&T. My brother actually helped me root it and I'm running the Xi40 ROM I found in these developer forums.
Anyway, about 2 weeks ago, I dropped my precious One X, and cracked the screen. The LCD underneath was fine. I was considering replacing the screen/ digitizer myself, but after plenty of reading, it was just too much for me. So I had a local repair shop replace it. When they replaced the screen/ digitizer, they broke my original LCD, so they replaced the the whole combo (being screen/ digitizer/ and LCD). Well they actually put a international version of the digitizer in my device, and I know, because instead of saying "AT&T" at the top, it says "HTC"...
The replacement doesn't sit totally flush to the device, but I can push it in and it seems like there's space for the screen to fit it. Basically was the repair done wrong, or is the international screen actually different from the US version that's disallowing it to fit flush to the device?
I'll try and get pictures up later if anyone is interested.
Cheers.
I dont think the screens have any differences between the international version and the ATT version so maybe they just did the procedure wrong

Thanks for the insight. Currently I'm just trying to push it into place or something, hoping it will snap in. Any cases you guys would recommended that wraps over the sides to maybe help the screen stay flush?

He didn't do the best job putting it in, then again a lot of us got our phones with the screen not sitting flush as well.
and it isn't necessarily the T3 international version, the Rogers version (which is the same S4 variant) also says Htc on top. Either way though, you're fine.

That may not be true. The Teg3 One X uses panels from Acer and Sharp whereas the XL uses Sony panels exclusively. It seemed kind of odd but if they are actually sized differently it makes sense.

I've just received this phone from CPW in UK (L09 single sim) and noticed that it doesn't have visible ugle black bars around the edge of the screen, which I've seen in all review videos for silver and white versions.
I'm assuming this is colour related and not necessarily region related. Can anyone confirm this?
I was really interested in the white version but unavailable in the uk so would have to import but not if it has the black borders.
They all have black bezels but they are imperceptible in the gray model due to the black fascia.

That's what I assumed initially but I've checked thoroughly with torch and no black border at the top and bottom. I'll try to add pics if i can.
The black bezels borders seem to be visible on all colours except grey colour.
I did own grey P9 plus but the black bezels were very much visible if i remember correctly more so on the gold version.
I could be wrong though.
You will try to find anything to complain about, fanboy?
Not sure if you really have the phone or not but better to send it back if you own it.

Another insecure fanboy not sure why people get so personal whenever someone has an observation.
Not sure where you see the complaint here though re bezel, it's actually good thing black bezel not being visible.:silly:
It's an observation not a complaint, I hope you do realise the difference. Lol

Yeah the silver and white models have the horrible looking black border. It's probably not as bad in person vs videos though. I thought the same before I bought my mate 7 and 8 and it wasn't as bad or even noticable in person.

Thanks for sharing info, you could be right perhaps black bar doesn't look as bad in real life. It is very intrusive though wonder why not just have same black front for all colours and just have different backs.

I have a P9 and have noticed reviews etc have the ugly black borders around them. However my P9 has no black borders at all that are part of the screen. Where the bezel ends, the screen starts immediately. I have no clue why this is, but for my phone it is a fact (definitely not complaining though), I assumed as a lot of reviews come from the US, that they were reviewing clone P9's without knowing it. However I do not think this is the case.
After trying and failing with the S8/S8+ I decided to go for the U11.
I ordered two phones from Amazon, one for myself and one for family. They were the amazing silver. We powered them on, and then noticed backlight bleed along the lower edge. The guy on this review is the only reviewer who mentions it and shows the problem:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2017/0...pretty-good-phone-if-anyones-still-listening/
Not only that, but both phones had a dead pixel on the screen (But I think that's just my bad luck . I took it on myself to watch reviews on youtube, and I think the lower edge problem has been there on every review unit, but no reviewer mentioned it.
I really am considering a switch to the U11, but I have a serious screen OCD so I wanted to put it to you guys... Do you all experience this? And is it terribly bad on every day performance?
Thanks

No shadow, no dead pixels (just went through a full pixel test - jeez this backlight will blind you on full!), no scuffed glass, nothing. It's the first device I've ever gotten from HTC with no complaints about the screen (my M7 had a yellow tint as did the M8 and the first few weeks of owning my 10, the glue hadn't settled so it was pink tinted and I had to have the Sprint store open up 8 EVOs before I found an acceptable screen to give you an idea - never had a dead pixel except on AMOLED ironically enough).
It's the Sapphire Blue.

Yeah out of all phones I've ever ordered, this one is by far my favorite. Ridiculous battery life, no lag, great screen, no gimmicks (edge sense is actually quite useful - I use it to launch my camera immediately when I'm out and about), excellent camera, doesn't overheat, crystal clear call quality, loud speaker set up... Only thing I don't like is News Republic chewing up my battery and not being able to disable it.
I haven't even rooted it yet. Every other phone I've rooted within a week, oftentimes the day I've received it. I ordered it May 16th from HTC on pre-order and got it on June 9th. No phone has ever been in my possession that long without being modded somehow, even if it was just changing the launcher.
The light bleed problem affected every review unit as you said, and there have been several threads here mentioning it. My conclusion is that nearly every U11 has the problem although it's rather subtle so not easy not to notice if you don't know about it.
Personally I'm rather OCD about screens and I'm not happy about this defect but I'm now used to it. The location is just one that you don't look at normally. In fact I think we've grown used to ignore the lowest part of the screen as it's where ads normally sit. Also it kinda helps that the bleed gets reduced a lot depending on the angle you look at the screen from.

I'm very OCD regarding LCD screen and the phone itself. The phone is perfect except for the light bleeding, a stuck pixel and some sound static in earphone. Otherwise the phone is perfect like the camera, sound, battery life and performance.
As I bought the phone from Hong Kong its a pain in the... To return it. So with a 10% discount off that seller gave me I learned to enjoy and love the phone.
My HTC One X, M8x, 10 U11 and the S8+ all suffered from flaws being the S8+ the worst (random restarting and pinkish screen tone) so I'm not a lucky person about phones.
@evak2979 i sent you a message but basically it's about accepting defeat when it comes to small flaws, unfortunately there's not more to it. Although of course, if your phone has serious build issues that no one else has it should go back to HTC.
I have is as well. Actually this is my second unit (Black), the previous (Silver) had it as well. I can see it in display test application but I would say it is not affecting normal usage. Overall I am happy with display quality.

Like I told my new pal on PM, I got the S8+ new for a very good price (539, UK).
If that sinks, I'll bite the bullet and return to HTC. It's funny because I don't mind scuffs, or scratches, or what. I just want a normal okay screen. I remember being happy with Note 4, with S5, With M8, With M9.
Then this new fashion started with every display being the dumbs
And the S8+ arrived with dust under the glass.
I've fought for a long time with my OCD to accept that AMOLEDs will never have consistent whites (though my one plus 3t is perfect, the one phone I've kept over the months). As of late with the S8 it's also been, full red edges, dead pixels, dust specs.
Let's try the U11 again. If it just has light bleed and no dead pixels I'll keep it...
I don't have light bleed.
I use edge to launch my calendar.
Sound through the earphones is shockingly good!
It looks dated in any other color but blue or red.
Those bezels? Ug.
The screen is beautiful and they've coated with oleophilics that feel INCREDIBLE.
The camera is excellent.
It's a very VERY good phone.
I have it on mine, but It's hardly even noticeable... Definitely not a game-changer for me. It's not enough for me to return it for a new one.
Just updating that I received my HTC U11 black, and I sent it back with a dead pixel. That's the third U11 with dead pixels, the first two having been silvers from Amazon.
I have also encountered issues with S8s (dust under glass), but not so much or frequent.
I want to get a U11 more than I do an S8, but I am really really skeptical about a few things - the build quality of the panel. The reports that some of the units are not so water proof (The solar reds apparently, a youtube search I did testified to that.
Sorry for diverting this thread from its original post, but I am really curious about you guys' opinion. I agree to having screen OCD, and that I should lower my standards when it comes to white consistency on AMOLED, for example. Or even some light bleed on LCD panels.
But dead pixels? Dead pixels on 649 pound devices, top end flagship? What is going on with QC and how lost must we drop our standards.
And if anyone thinks I am lying I am happy to provide with pictures...
If anyone from the UK has a relatively faultless HTC, please tell me where you bought it from so I can buy from there myself. And which color variant.
Thank you.
Hi, I believe you as I have the same problem with my Asian version. But can you share a picture? I want to compare mine with yours.

Of course...Here. Same on all three, just in different positions.
Mine is in a similar position but it's not black. Indeed it changes according to the color but of course it's different from the rest. Mine is more a defective pixel than a dead or stuck one. I thought it was the same pixel issue but it's not.

Nah mine is dead dead.
I am considering a 4th U11. At this point, I don't even care about the light bleed. But 3/3 with dead pixels, it can't just be bad luck. That's the thing. I mean this is very bad QC. None of the reviewers are mentioning things like this. Or the issues with the S8 screen.
I think at this point someone needs to step up and say : ok guys, these are the GOOD things about the phone. But there is also
S8 (red tints, even after patch. Bad smudges on grey. Dust particles under panel)
U11 (Dead pixels. Light bleed at bottom of the screen).
In the end, the only trustworthy review is XDA forums and its users.
A while ago, i saw a post regarding the weight of the essential phone changed from the older devices. when i went to best buy to exchange it, it weighed noticeably heavier than the previous phone i had. also, the last phone had a slippery gloss and had problems. the new one i replaced hasnt given me a problem and im quite happy with it because some usual bugs others experienced.
i dont know what the weight of the last one is, but what i want to make a thread of is have your phone weighed, post the weight and reply with the list of issues and feel of the device. lets see if there theres any theory to this.
so my phone is:
.4lbs or 6.4 oz.
not that slippery compared to the last one
camera works pretty good
doesnt get hot easily, battery life lasts 5-6 hours on screen time
Interesting that phones would have different weights.
6.6 oz on a postal scale. Purchased yesterday, haven't started using it yet.

Yes, well, phone, sim card and original plastic film protector things that were on it in the box.
Anyone else?
If I had a way to measure I would, I'm curious. Mine is a white sprint variant and the finish is glossy but I'm not sure what to compare it to, it's not slippery though.
