[Q] i5081 never been updated - Galaxy 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all.
I have watched the NOOB Video. I have scoured the forum. I have looked at other Android sites. I,m at a loss.
I have recently been given an old stock GT-I5801 that was never updated and network locked to Orange. To be able to use the phone I unlocked it. I gave my rooted xperia x8 running a hacked 2.2 to my son, as I read that the I5801 had an official Froyo 2.2 update. I installed KIES, updated as requested when first running the software, and it doesn't recognise the phone. I tried uninstalling/re-installing KIES and not updating it, I found that the phone had two Home screens (orange and TwLauncher) I tried connecting using both.
I have found instructions on how to put the official firmware update on not using KIES but the links to the firmware its self are broken.
I decided to update to a Android system 2.3.7 / CyanogenMod 7.2, however the instruction require I root it, the instructions to root are for Froyo 2.2
I'm going around in circles, I'm at a loss. can any one point me in the right direction to get at least Froyo 2.2 official on this phone. Thanks.
P.S. I may of ignored the part in the NOOB video that tells us to be brief...........sorry.

Just flash cm7 or any rom with odin, check the flashing guide in sticky thread.

Well if that's the only way, would been nice to have a fully working 2.2 rather than a hack with issues. I'll go look into the least problematic one, cant be any worse than 2.1 stock.

GT-I5801 has indeed been updated to Froyo and Froyo is one of the more stable firmware/ROM for our mobile.
You can download any stock Froyo ROM of your wish from the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1497261.
Esle, you can look up to this thread to use any of the Custom ROMs which have better features than stock ROMs http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1234591
I prefer Kisadworx or PuruKisadHybrid.

Download Kyrillos rom or any rom flashable via Odin. Just flash it no need to root as many roms are prerooted.

Questions about ROMS on Rogers Captivate

I just bought my first Android phone, the Samsung Captivate on the Rogers (Canada) network.
I immediately updated the firmware via kies to 2.2.
Now I'm looking into custom ROMS because the lag is still and issue with 2.2 it seems.
Can I install ROMS like cognition on the Rogers Captivate even though it was an AT&T ROM?
If not, what are the best rogers custom ROMS?
Another thing, do I need to do the GPS fix with 2.2?
If you're mostly happy with the stock 2.2 you can easily get a lagfix through flashing a kernel..
As for custom roms, any of them should work on rogers as well as AT&T. There's guides on xda for how to flash back to stock using odin and then getting a custom rom. I haven't needed the GPS fix...running Serendipity 5.12.
I'm running Paragon 6 using the Rogers Captivate and I couldn't be happier. I have tried many roms and paragon was the one that I stuck with, if you flash some roms give paragon a try. The only problem with flashing custom roms is most likely you will lose your i896 boot screen and will get the at&t one. But there are ways to get your i896 boot screen back if you need to take your phone in for warrenty work. Happy flashing.

Thanks both of you.
One quick question.
I was reading one post about a guy flashing a ROM on his phone and could no longer use his Rogers SIM card because the rom was based off AT&T?
Did he do something wrong, should I not have to worry about this?
Err, after Googling around, I've read that after you update to the Froyo firmware via kies, it deletes your unlock code, am I going to run into problems here?
I have never had that problem, but I can't say for sure. There is a galaxy unlock program available for free in the market that can unlock your Rogers Captivate. Its called "Galaxy S Unlock." So if you do lose your unlock just re-unlock it using the above app.

Thanks a lot, that worked, I'm unlocked.
I also was successful at installing Paragon 6.0
So glad I didn't get the iPhone 4 now

[Q] Can't Root Stock Froyo Captivate S1 (upgraded to Gingerbread 2.3.3)

Hi,
I have searched and searched for an answer to my specific question and am having NO luck.
To start, my Samsung Galaxy S Captivate (on Rogers network) came stock with Froyo, and I hastily upgraded to Gingerbread (2.3.3 is what it's currently running). I tried to root the phone using Odin and Gingerbreak, both with NO success. It just hangs up for hours, doing nothing. Not rebooting, just hanging there.
My questions are:
Can I root this phone, despite its having been upgraded to gingerbread and isn't STOCK gingerbread? and if not...
Can I revert back to Froyo somehow?
Keeping in mind, this phone has NEVER been ROOTED.
Many thanks in advance!!
couldn't you use odin1click to flash stock 2.1 and upgrade back to froyo using Kies thn root with superoneclick? dont take my word for it though! lol im still a lil bit noobish
The member by the name of trusselo is the one you seek. If i remember correctly he has all the stock rogers odin one clicks in his sig.

[Q] Rooting LG G2x 2.3.4

Hi,
I was wanting to root my T-mobile LG G2x and I found a previous forum but it don't know if the methods will work due to the forum rooting for a 2.3.3. G2x were I have the new update that is 2.3.4 will the same method work for the update or is there a different way to do it, or would the program unlockroot work to do the rooting?
here is the forum I found:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255214
and is the legit site for Unlock root?:
http://www.unlockroot.com/index.htm
Bump. Did you ever figure it out? I'm having the same problem.
I flashed my phone that had 2.3.4 with a stock rom and was able to go from there.
Let's get one thing straight I am not at all a pro at this.
What led to me flashing stock was my dumb ass flashing my phone with a p990 version. XD

Can't upgrade to 2.2 - KIES doesn't recognize phone

Hi.
I have a rooted Samsung GT-I5801 with 2.1 and been waiting patiently to Samsung to resolve the KIES problem, but i'm tired of waiting.
All the official solutions i saw to upgrade had a warning to phone that where blocked to the operator. The fact that a i have it rooted removes that block?
How can i upgrade to 2.2?

Don't know about the block, but just search for STOCK FROYO OS in the dev thread
There is one with all stock firmware
Else go to samfirware.com (google for exact address) , register, and download the reqd firmware FOR THE REQD REGION

It would be nice to try custom froyo 2.2 roms. Stock 2.2 rom for i5801 has phone heating problem when used with continuous data connection. U won't get good battery backup either.

Thank you for your reply. Will try that.

[Q] noob needs help getting the Atrix 2 usable.

i have been using my inspire 4g for few years now with the stock 2.3.3 w/o any problem until i accepted the update notification from at&t for 2.3.5 which i hate now. Long story short, it just made my exchange email crap and it became a burden. I do not know anything about rooting so bought a used Atrix 2 hoping to have ICS on it.
But the phone came withe the following:
Android Version: 2.3.5
System Version: 55.11.11.MB865.ATT.en.US
Build Number: 5.5.1-175_EDFFW1-11
As soon as I power on, the setup screen comes in where I enter my google details and it takes me to home screen and all is well. But when I click the 'Contacts' icon, it takes me to AT&T address book directly and starts rotating endlessly. Never give me an option to disable AT&T address book in contacts. It goes directly there and never completes even though I have data and wifi enabled. I tried at&t support as i don't have at&t phonebook registered - they asked me to upgrade to ICS.
Then I tried the OTA ICS upgrade and it always says the 'The device is upto date and no software upgrade is necessary'. It never upgrades the OS. At this point, at&t said they can't do anything and asked me to talk to Motorola. Motorola said this phone is running a version that is not supported so they can't help either. I have been googling and reading a lot of posts in this forum for help without much success.
I did check out the following and asked for help there:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2047087&page=2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1779968&page=69
Can someone please point me a thread or give me steps i need to follow to get this phone out of stock and working condition?
I am also working on getting my inspire out of stock OS but would love to get this phone fixed first.
Thanks in advance.

If you want to get the official ICS then here is the fxz for AT&T US phones (if you are somewhere else or using a different carrier, then you probably don't want this and need to supply more info.)
A couple of things to note. Once you upgrade to the official ICS there is NO going back to Gingerbread (unless someone hacked something together and I missed it), but it's best to assume you won't. Make backups before you do anything, better safe than sorry. If you don't like not having an option to revert to Gingerbread, then there are other options, but not the one mentioned.
If all is good and you want to flash the Official ICS, then you can visit the noob guide which will tell you how to flash a FXZ and what is needed.
Thank you. I really don't like the idea of not going back to Gingerbread but at this time my priority is to get this atrix 2 up and running. So am ok to get the official ics but the following says i should go to 2.3.6 in order to get to ics. Is that still true for the link you provided?

The link you posted is for ICS Leak#1, that will get you on ICS and as long as you're on Leak #1 only, you can revert to Gingerbread by using a specific FXZ from the link you posted. Your choice. The Official ICS that I posted has everything and will overwrite everything, so whether you flash from 2.3.5 or 2.3.6 it's going to upgrade the bootloader and system. Just remember, if you use the Offical ICS, then no more Gingerbread. Personally, I haven't wanted or needed Gingerbread since I got ICS.
Dear jsknair.
You can directly flash with OTA ICS update, no need to go to 2.3.4 then update to 2.3.6 the OTA ICS.
I very easy as other guy said study noob guide. After that within 10 min you will be on ICS and its really good you don't think to go back to GB.
I like to thanks Jimbirdman :thumbup:to help me for update my Atrix 2.
