Micromax A116 HD - General Topics

Please rate MicroMax A116:
Design and build
Compared to the A110, we’re happy to report the A116 scores much higher in the build quality department. The front looks similar, but the rear cover now has a glossy finish with a fine sprinkle of pixie dust. This gives it a nice shine and also manages to conceal quite a bit of fingerprints. The entire handset bears a striking resemblance to the HTC One X, so it scores high on aesthetics as well. The battery cover is easy to remove thanks to the soft plastic. Inside, we have two GSM SIM slots with the microSD card slot in between. None of these are hot-swappable and you’ll need to remove the battery to insert the cards. The power and volume rocker buttons assume their usual place on either side of the handset and are easy to reach. The headphone jack and microUSB port are placed on the top. The Canvas HD is slightly narrower than the A110 thanks to the smaller bezel around the screen; it is lighter as well at 157 g. The handset is quite comfortable even if you don’t have large hands and fits snugly in your pocket. You’ll want to be careful where you place your phone, though, as the protruding camera lens could get scratched easily. Overall, we really like what Micromax has achieved here; it is definitely a step above the its previous offering.
Features
Interface
IPS panel makes a return in the Canvas HD, but instead of a lowly WVGA resolution, the A116 boasts of an impressive HD (1280 x 720) resolution, which makes all the difference in the world. Text is sharper, images are more vivid and crisp and the UI simply looks better. The panel itself has good viewing angles along with good colours. However, we noticed that the videos didn’t have the same level of vividness as photos. All our test videos and the ones we shot had weak black levels and the contrast was quite low, so it appears as if there’s a white haze throughout. We only faced this during video playback and through any video player. The A116 features a lightly-modified Jelly Bean 4.1.2. You get notification toggles and extra settings in the menu to configure the two SIM cards. The Canvas HD is powered by the MediaTek MT6589 quad-core SoC. This is made up of four ARM Cortex-A7 CPUs running at 1.2GHz and a PowerVR SGX 544MP GPU. The SoC is fabricated using the 28nm process, so it should sip power rather than gulp it down. The chipset also houses the baseband radios, so there’s no need for a second chip. This budget oriented SoC packs in quite a punch as well. In benchmarks, the Canvas HD is right on the heels of the HTC One X and the Samsung Galaxy S III. We got an impressive 13043 points in AnTuTu and 4004 points in Quadrant, which is pretty good. All this power, along with a whole 1GB of RAM, translates well into real world performance. The UI is incredibly smooth with the occasional lag creeping in. Apps open and close quickly and games like Temple Run 2 and Angry Birds Space run smoothly. Even while running these heavy tasks, the phone gets warm at the most.
Media
Music playback is handled by the stock Jelly Bean player. The quality of audio is strictly average at first, but sounds good with a little equaliser tweaking. The rear speaker is quite loud, so you won’t miss any of the alerts even in a noisy place. You get 4GB of internal memory and a slot for expanding it up to 32GB. Video playback is much better this time around. The custom video player supports MKV files as well and the A116 handles 1080p video smoothly. There is a very minute lag that creeps during playback, but it’s barely noticeable.
Connectivity
The Canvas HD only supports two bands for 2G and just one for 3G. Other connectivity features include Wi-Fi ‘n’, Bluetooth v4.0 and USB plug-and-play support. Other than the Play Store, Micromax also bundles its M! Store and M!Zone for added content. The bundled apps include some games like Cricket Fever, Fruit Devil along with some productivity apps like File Manager, M! Buddy and HookUp.
Camera
The 8MP shooter seems to have been lifted from the A110, albeit with a slightly different interface. There’s the usual selection of exposure, colour effect, scene modes and white balance. For stills, the camera is also capable of burst mode, up to 99 shots. Unlike the One X, holding down the shutter button doesn’t kick-start burst mode immediately. There’s a little lag and that’s mainly due to the focus speed being a little slow. Even for macro shots, the camera takes more than a couple of seconds to focus before it’s ready to capture. The image quality is pretty good for indoor and outdoor shots. The sensor is able to pick up decent amount of detail and accurate colours. Once you zoom in to 100 percent, the details get a bit hazy, but that’s to be expected from a camera at this price point.
The funny thing is, Micromax claims that the A116 is limited to 720 video when it easily manages to record in 1080p if the video quality is set to "Fine". The video container used is 3GP and moving objects in the video don’t have a very smooth motion as it’s not 30fps at this resolution. It's still passable, however, and 720p video fares a lot better.
Battery life
This was an area of concern for many from the time Micromax announced the A116. A 2000mAh battery powering a 5-inch HD screen and a quad-core SoC did not sound very good. Surprisingly, the Canvas HD managed to deliver 7-hours and 45-minutes of continues video playback. This translates to roughly 14-hours of real world usage, which is not bad all things considered.
Verdict and price in India
The Micromax A116 Canvas HD is available for a bargain price of Rs.13,990, which easily makes it the most powerful smartphone under Rs.15,000 right now. The best part is the powerful specifications on paper actually translate well into real world performance, which makes this very usable as a primary phone. The Canvas HD is lighter and slimmer than the A110, has a much better screen, comes with Jelly Bean, packs in a powerful SoC, 1080p video recording and playback and a surprisingly decent battery life. This makes it a steal at this price point, so no wonder it’s sold out everywhere. Apart from the lack of an OTA update option and the video playback looking a bit dull, there’s very little to complain about here. While we highly recommend the Canvas HD if you can find it, we’re really eager to see XOLO’s A1000. This handset is priced the same as the A116 but features a dual-core SoC instead of quad-core. While this does limit the video playback capabilities to 720p, we should get better battery life and based on XOLO’s previous offerings, we should expect better build and finish as well. It also has the awesome BSI sensor we saw in the A800. For now, the Micromax A116 Canvas HD is the handset to beat in the mid-range price bracket.

i want to know capabilities of IPS capacitive screen installed in Canvas a116.

Please update how the GPS is working. Is it trouble free and how fast is fix to sattelites

i prefer samsung mobiles <>.

its quad core gives around 70% performance compared to flagship devices like S3 at less than half of its price.

how is it different from a110

I read a review of Micromax Canvas HD and they are saying Micromax Canvas HD A116 is a really attractive handset, both feature wise as well as in terms of performance. I have not enjoyed my games and videos any more on a smartphone that costs less than Rs 15,000 as I did on this handset. Read full review:-

You can visit thinkdigit.com and check their review as well... it seems Micromax Canvas HD has some issues.

May be it has some issues but in this range you cant get like this features which is micromax is providing...n you can see demands of that mobile in market.

i am using a micromax device, its good in some parts better check the features like camera clarity and quality, ear piece volume etc., dont fall for the screen as it looks..

mmx a116 is nice having 1 gb ram i have mmx a110 recently purchased its an awsome mobile so a116 is definitely a good choice

MMX 116
Question here is the built quality of the phone. I did not like the plastics used in A110. But that said, you can't expect a below Rs.15k phone to have all features of a phone which is around Rs.35k

Stop discussion and start development
Hey if any one will give the link of stock ROM of a116 I'll make a custom ROM for it even though I don't have it

*Service center and my retailer supported me very well as I dealt with some software bugs(hang, inaccurate battery % etc.) in my phone *But all solved**replaced my phone after 1.5 months*
*My credo is that do not buy very costly mobile over 15k and use it for 2 years and then sell it out at half or more specially if you love buying new tech mobiles
*I was also confused it with xolo q800 but the main problem is “only”xolo service
Physically existing service center only in few areas but they will support you through courier services so some had bad experience while others have good experience.
Have a look at comments http://gadgets.ndtv.com/mobiles/new...d-will-take-on-micromax-a116-canvas-hd-340830
*This s5 titanium has snapdragon processor and quattro gpu&processor is not as fast as 504q power vr sgx544&mtk 6589 but these lva&micromx are considered low grade brands so your choice performance or brand when on a tight budget !
*Much better and trusty than those karbon, intx, zenn, celkn, gioneee
*At least this lava has list of authorized service centers mentioned on its website ...so be safe and in fact I’ve been using 2 other lava mobiles since 1.8 years so no problem until now
Go for it you will not regret !
Please like if you find it helpful
Thank you
I love my LAVA IRIS 504q. Yes after using Canvas 2, Canvas hd, HTC sensation I'm in love with it.
Its a superb phone under 13K ( I got it as low as 11,900)
I used canvas 2 and canvas hd and Lava beats them in every aspect..
It has got most perfect vivid and vibrant display in its class.. Even compared to the display of Sony Experia Z's display its neck to neck or even better..... exaggerating?? try to see it with your own eyes and pop your eyes out...
Its like holding a 25k phone with superior display, superior build quality, superior look , superior performance, best touch response even compared to high end smartphones and obviously with the most feature-rich and strong ROM .
Can you believe it comes preloaded with Modern Combat 2, Whats App, MX player, Fusion, Flashlight, Hungama, Opera along with stock browser, Variety theme and many more super apps along with gesture control..
And other brands must be ashamed about the intelligent magnetic flip cover . You can't get more convenient and better quality flip cover even with 1000 bucks.
So you come to know it has got magnetic sensor ( yep, u can install compass on your device) along with light, proximity, accelerometer, gyroscope (again leaving competitors ashamed).
No wonder it's selling like hot cake leaving Canvas HD way behind in this competition ...
Lava's finally coming good. I remember my last workplace which was close to their manufacturing unit in Noida and these guys sounded pretty motivated a few months ago. Maybe this new roll-out of better devices is the reason for that.

CUBE has released two new models last month, but it seems the attentions all went to the Talk 79 (U55GT), which has a 7.9-inch IPS display, a quad-core processor and full phone functionalities, that very few people actually noticed the U39GT. However, I am a much bigger fan of this slate, which sports a 9 inch FHD Samsung PLS display, and owns features such as the peppy RK3188 chipset, 2GB RAM, Bluetooth, etc.
Key Features:
◇9 inch 16M-color PLS display at WUXGA resolution (1920X1200 pixels), 256PPI
◇Rockchip RK3188 SoC., 28nm quad-core 1.6GHZ Cortex-A9 processor, Mali-400MP4 GPU, 2GB DDR3 RAM
◇Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS with heavy customizations
◇16GB of built-in-storage
◇2MP front facing camera, 5.0MP rear-facing AF camera
◇AAC Stereo speakers
◇HDMI TV-out
◇Bluetooth 2.1
◇Anti-rolling frame
◇USB host
◇MicroSD card slot
◇1080p video playback
◇5200mAh Li-Po rechargeable battery
Design
The U39GT looks just like a smaller version of its larger, and older brother: the U30GT2. There’s sufficient amount of bezel on either side of the screen, so you can use it in any orientation. When you're holding the device in landscape, it's really comfortable, but the 16:10 device is so long and skinny that it feels top-heavy when you pick it up in portrait. The iPad's much more amenable to being held both ways — in portrait for reading and browsing, landscape for movies and games — while the U39GT is very clearly designed to be held sideways and used in landscape.
Of course, the front is dominated by a 9-inch PLS display made by Samsung. A 2MP front-facing camera sits comfortably on the upper left corner, which can be used for online video chatting. But the intelligent light sensor, which helps the tablet to automatically adjust the display brightness, is nowhere to be found.
All the keys and connectors are hosted on the left edge. You will find a power button, a volume rocker, a Micro HDMI port, a MicroSD card slot, a 3.5mm audio jack and a 2.5mm DC port there. The metal trim around the sides gives the tablet a solid feel.
The AAC stereo speaker gates are hosted on the right edge.
The back of the U39GT is magnesium aluminum alloy, which is not only good-looking, but also very durable. The frosted texture also helps to avoid slippage, and provides a welcome contrast from the glass front. It’s completely bare except for the Brand and regulatory logos, and the 8-megapixel camera in the top right corner.
The Chassis doesn’t have a single screw on it, so it feels even more solid!
Its 8.9mm thick body also guarantees a solid hold and great portability.
Display
As much as the superlative the design deserves, the most impressive feature of the tablet has to be its display. Boasting a Full HD resolution of 1920x1280, the slate's 9-inch PLS LCD panel offers effective color reproduction and clarity from virtually any viewing angle, making it the ideal choice for hosting everything, from video content to 3D gaming apps.
From the photos above, it is obvious that the U39GT crushed the Beneve Miracle One (Dolphin), which uses the same LG display featured by the iPad2, in both colors and pixel density.
However, the brightness is not really satisfactory enough, outdoor viewing would be difficult.
Audio
CUBE boasts that the AAC technology enhances any audio played through the device, but the stereo speakers on the right side of the U39GT produced average audio. Regardless of what is played -- from Alicia Key's "Brand New Me" to Usher's "Scream" --the sound was not loud at all, as if I was listening to someone's radio from a few meters away.
Interface
The U39GT ships with Android 4.2.2, and adopts a WIN8-like launcher that is exquisitely designed by CUBE, it offers five home screens including a Start home screen, a Social Networking home screen, a Gaming app home screen, an Office app home screen, and a home screen of Other favorite applications. Even the application drawer has been designed very metro-like, and all the shortcuts and widgets will change to cubes once they are dragged onto the home screens to fit the interface.
Performance
The U39GT is powered by a 1.6GHz quad-core rk3188 CPU, backed up by 2GB of RAM. Although this is not really the most cutting-edge SoC. for Android devices, it is still incredibly smooth in day-to-day operation, with almost no performance hiccups, and smooth scrolling in home screens, menus and apps alike. The RK3188’s beefy Mali-400MP4 GPU also means you’re well-equipped for graphic-intense games.
In our benchmark tests, the U39GT scored at the front of the tablet charts without blowing away the competition. Not simply because it’s powering too many pixels, but more capable chipsets such as Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8064 are now used in tablet products.
1) Antutu
Although the 15,648 overall Antutu benchmark score is dwarfed by the APQ8064 powered Sony Xperia Tablet Z’s 20,259, it does handily beat the 13,989 notched by the Exynos 4412 powered RAMOS W30HD.
2) Geekbench
In the Geekbench test, the U39GT doesn’t really shine, its 1,205 score bottomed the 4 devices we use for comparison.
3) Quadrant
The Quadrant score of the U39GT is also not that satisfactory, almost on par with the snatch of the should-have-been-weaker RAMOS W30HD, and lags greatly behind the Sony Xperia Tablet Z.
4) 3D Mark & An3D XL
In both the graphic-focused 3D Mark and An3D XL tests, the U39GT notched quite decent scores.
5) Vellamo and CF-Bench
Vellamo is by far my favorite Benchmark application, the scores of certain device are very consistent, regardless of the version of the software. Again the Tablet Z topped the charts, but the U39GT also more than held its own against most of the other quad core tablets.
In the CF-bench test, the U39GT also notched a pretty impressive score.
In the real world use, the slate is particularly well-suited for viewing PDF books and magazines, with colors displayed vividly and text appearing crisp and clear. It's also well-equipped for handling most gaming apps with minimal compromise, including demanding 3D games like “NFS” and “Asphalt 7”.
Not everything's perfect yet: scrolling in the browser can still be stuttery at times, and for some inexplicable reason the screen still takes really a while to rotate. But apps don't crash nearly as often, and general slowness and lag is even closer to being totally eradicated.
CUBE has done a good job with multimedia support and features for its tablets. For video, the U39GT supports MP4, RM, H.264, DivX, Xvid, and WMV files at up to 1080p resolution. For audio you get MP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WAV, and WMA support. You can also mirror your screen using Miracast with supported HDTVs or connect the slate with an HDMI cable.
The tablet has 16GB built-in storage, as well as microSD support that can add up to 32GB of additional storage to what is already on board.
Connectivity
Probably due to the metal back it uses, the U39GT disappoints in Wi-Fi connection, at a few meters and wall away the data reception could be severely crippled, a strong Wi-Fi tether is strongly recommended if you are going to own this tablet. The addition of Bluetooth V2.1 means you could connect your tablet to things such as input devices, headphones or sound boxes without the annoyance of cables. I only realize the value of Bluetooth when I want to play SEGA Virtua Tennis with my friends!
Cameras
Let’s be honest — most tablet cameras are pretty crappy. The kinds of shooters you’ll find on even a high-end Android tablet are roughly equivalent to the cheap, blurry, grainy cameras found on low-end smartphones. And the U39GT is no exception, neither the 2MP front-facing camera nor the 5MP rear-facing camera delivers high quality shots, even though the rear-side camera has Auto Focus support. If you just need to use them for video chatting or scanning D-bar code, it does get the job done.
Photos snapped by the rear facing camera.
Battery Life
The U39GT’s 5,200mAh battery is relatively small for a tablet with a 9 inch FHD display, even the much smaller and thinner ICOO ICOU Fatty2 (7.85 inch display, 7mm thick) packs a bigger 5,500mAh battery. Well, shame on CUBE!
However, thanks to the 28nm process and PMU, the longevity of the tablet is better than the battery figure suggests.
It takes about four hours to charge the U39GT from zero to full, and roughly 7-8 hours to drain it dry. Actual battery life will, of course, depend on how we use the tablet, and variables like high brightness and heavy downloads or streaming will zap the battery a little quicker, but we found it comparable to other 9-inch competitors.
Battery rundown test 1:
Single-looping a 720P MP4 video, the U39GT held its ground for 9 hours and 36 minutes, this was a much better result than what the battery capacity suggested.
Battery rundown test 2:
Streaming an online TV sitcom consecutively, the slate stood up for 7 hours and 48 minutes. Although this is no iPad4 level yet, it is enough time even for the heaviest users in a day.
Verdict
The U39GT is far from being one of the best Android tablets currently, I would give that honor to the waterproof SONY Xperia Tablet Z, the eye-watering Google Nexus 10, and the stylus-enabled Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1.
However, with dozens of Chinese tablets coming into the world every day, the U39GT still stands out by simply being the only one sporting a 9 inch PLS display at FHD resolution. At the budget end of the market there are few better alternatives to the U39GT. The device offers solid specs and an impressive screen resolution, costing less than the 8.9-inch PIPO M7pro it is in direct competition with.
The Good:
High quality chassis, no screw design.
Fabulous display.
Solid Performance.
Reasonable Price.
The Bad:
Uninspiring outdoor visibility.
5,200mAh battery.
Poor Wi-Fi reception.
Incapable cameras.

Thats sad, and since the releases of new CPU and new models are very fast, the community foruns cannot cope with this.
You search for a community forum about android, and you find topics and sub-foruns about old products....
Very nice review.
My advice, do not buy the U39GT-3G version. I own it and it has been sent to me by this shop http://www.cube-tablet.com with an incorrect IMEI number. I cannot connect to the internet using my data SIM card.
The incorrect IMEI nummber of my device: 111111111111111 (15 times 1).
I am so fed up by this shop, I only wanted to have this device because it has a 3G SIM card slot and now this, do not buy this product with the 3G SIM card slot. The WiFi only version may be fine, but avoid the 3G version.
Good review, chinese tabs are good for prcie but I am worried about the OS upgrades! is there any custom rom development on cube tabs?
On one hand sorry for ressurecting a relatively old thread on another the reviewer made an embarrassing mistake, one which would avert a would be buyer. The aspect ratio of the slate is 3:2 , not 16:10, which makes it the opposite of "too tall", in fact it's the only android tab I know which is not "long", everybody else use this damned 16:10 ratio which is only good for movies and mediocre for anything else (pretty much for anything that tablets are good for).
To sum up, if this tablet's build quality was not suspect I would forgive it's low battery and recommend it to anyone. Android manufacturers take cues, abandon this "phone like" aspect ratio and start releasing more square, less...oblong tabs. Ergonomically android tabs are rubbish and there is a reason why iPads still reign supreme, in fact if it was not for the abysmal aspect ratio androids would have been taking over long ago in tablets.
Anyway hope tabs like this will be more part of the news...
great tablet, maybe ill get one :d

I received my new U55GT today from TD.
Stock firmware (20131021) was (partially?) rooted, installing SuperSU (using MTKdroidtools) completed the rooting.
Using MTKdroidtools I managed to install CWM too, exactly the same way I previously did on my Ainol AX1 poseidon.
Just google for the correct procedure.
After that I made a backup and removed Chinese bloatware.
I'm impressed by U55GT's build quality, stereo sound and the very clear and crispy IPS display.
GPS is fully functional in the Netherlands (out of the box, no modifications needed).

Hi, did you try using this U55gt on Att 3G data? I'm planing to buy one, but I would like to know whether it is compatible with Att.'s 3G network frequency 850 and 1900 MHz ?
Thanks,
Andy

Cube U39GT - Disappointing!
Stock ROM is very uncomfortable and unstable. Very often crashes. Is not so beautiful (personal opinion). The biggest problem, however, is poor coverage of the wireless connection! I'm not sure that really supports standard N, as written in the description ! When the router is about 1.5 meters without walls or other obstacles, the network is stable, but the speed is very low - around 500-1000 Kbps (compared to the speed of my phone is about 5-6Mbps HTC Desire, my laptop - 50-60Mbps)! When the router is in the next room, the network becomes very unstable and occasionally interrupted, rarely exceed 200kbps speed (for comparation with the phone - the network is stable, and the rate is about 2-3 Mbps). HTC Desire does not support N standard and compared to newer phones network is quite low! I do not think this is normal and I would not buy again a device of this class! I root because I thought the problem may be software, I found only two custom Rom on the internet, but the problem remain!
I advise people who want to take advantage of the tablet using an internet connection, do not buy this device right! If you do not use the tablet for work on the internet, which I very much doubt, then no problem, but the cost of a device without an internet connection is very high!

Henk, still content with your cube tablet? do you have no complaints at all?
i'd also like to buy a low budget device, but i find myself oscillating too much between the one above and some other two with very similar specs, namely iFive mini 3gs from FNF and P8 from Pipo.
after guglin' a lot these days, i still cannot make up my mind...
any advice?

In spite of all the scorn poured out on tablets with voice-calling support, they are the rage in China, with all tablet manufacturers trying to grab a slice of the market. The domestic voice-calling tablet segment is growing with a number of launches from both Chinese and international manufacturers such as Samsung, Lenovo, ASUS.
On the lower end of this market segment, one of the latest voice-calling tablets is the Acube Talk 7X (Quad Core). The Talk 7X (Quad Core) is the refreshed version of the original Talk 7 and Talk 7X, which were respectively released in October and December, 2013. Much like the original Fonepad, the new Talk 7X (Quad Core) comes with a MediaTek processor, supports voice-calling and in addition, it comes with upgraded specifications. But, can it do enough to unseat some very high profile competition? We take a look.
Key Features:
◇7 inch PLS display at WSVGA resolution (1024X600 pixels)
◇Weighs 320g, 191.2*106.5*9.9mm in size.
◇MediaTek MT8382 SoC., 1.2GHZ Qual-core Cortex-A7 processor, Mali-400MP2 GPU, 1GB RAM
◇Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
◇8GB of built-in-storage, expandable by TF card
◇VGA front-facing camera; 2.0MP rear-facing camera
◇Stereo speaker
◇GPS
◇Bluetooth V4.0
◇GSM/WCDMA, full phone functionalities.
◇FM Radio
◇USB on the go
◇MicroSD card slot
◇Standard 3.5mm audio jack
◇1080p video playback
◇3000mAh Li-Po rechargeable battery, 5-6 hours battery life
Design and Build
The Talk 7X’s front houses a 7-inch display surrounded by a black bezel. The front panel does not include any branding, which I would consider a good tradition by the Chinese maker. Thanks to the Jelly Bean's onscreen navigation keys, which mean the front of the device is devoid of physical buttons, leaving simply the black bezel with an earpiece, a VGA camera, a light sensor and a proximity sensor.
On the right side of the device are the rather excellent buttons, with the one piece volume rocker sited just below the power button. They have a very responsive feel and are easy to find with your fingertips. The buttons are colored white to match the finish of the rear side, blending in nicely.
Unusually, the Talk 7X has its micro-USB port located on the top of the device next to the standard 3.5mm headphone jack. While it's uncommon to find the USB port on the top of a tablet of this size, it is ergonomically sound as the Talk 7X is simple to use while charging.
The positioning of this port also helps reduce the costs of manufacturing the tablet, as the circuit board has the connection for the port at the top. Acube has avoided running a cable to the bottom of the tablet as it had to on the original Talk 7.
The 2MP rear camera is housed in the upper left corner of the white glossy plastic back, which gives the tablet a somewhat cheap feeling.
Actually, this upper part of the back is removable, underneath are the dual SIM slot and Micro SD card slot.
You could also find an aperture in the lower middle, along with some of the information Acube wants you to see.
Measuring at 191.2*106.5*9.9mm, it is smaller than most of the 7-inch voice calling tablet. The only smaller 7-incher with phone functionalities I can think of is the Huawei MediaPad X1, which, of course, is many times more expensive than the 7X.
Holding the Talk 7X with one hand between thumb and forefingers is a comfortable grip that can be maintained for some time, no doubt due to its relative lightness and weight balance.
Display and Sound
Unlike many other budget tablets, The Talk 7X hasn't skimped on the screen. It has the same PLS display used on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0, comfortably beating the TN displays featured by the Lenovo A1000 and Ainol AX2, which it is in direct competition against.
The 7-inch PLS display the Acube Talk 7X (Quad Core) sports has a resolution of 1024*600 (PPI=169), obviously not quite as good as the best in the business, but it's a step up on the previous Talk 7, which only has a TN display.
Being a PLS LCD screen, it has fantastic viewing angles, even better than most of the IPS panels widely used on Chinese tablets. It does suffer from a little more glare than I would like and the color balance seems a little favored towards a yellowish tint, but these are minor complaints.
Some users will probably find it uncomfortable to be able to discern individual pixels on the display at a typical viewing distance, as most of smartphone displays we look at every day have already gone beyond the so-called retina standard. However, this 7-inch screen still has a much higher pixel density than most of the laptops and PC monitors, thus it should not be much of a problem for tight-budgeted users.
Interface and Software
The Talk 7X runs the Android 4.2.2 OS, along with a healthy amount of customizations on top of it, but nothing to break the head-to-toe Android feel.
The Google Play store works brilliantly on the Talk 7X, with easy access to all the popular apps and games you could want. However there remains a dearth of tablet apps, a space where Google has struggled to engage developers, especially when you compare it to the wealth of high-quality apps made for the iPad.
Seven-inch tablets suffer much less though, as many phone apps still work brilliantly at this smaller tablet screen size.
Benchmarks
The Talk 7X is powered by a quad-core 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6582 processor (Quad-core cortex-A7, Mali-400MP2) with 1GB RAM, which is a huge leap forward compared to its dual core predecessors.
General system performance is reliable and relatively speedy, the Antutu Benchmark test returned a decent 16010, matching the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 and besting the ASUS Transformer Prime.
The 5636 Quadrant test result was also surprisingly solid.
The notching in Geekbench2 test was sound, but not very promising.
In the more graphic-focused Nenamark2 and 3D Mark tests, the 7X also did very well.
The browser performance was also proven to be super-solid, the Vellamo test returned an astonishing 1903, putting this $80 device in the same league as the mighty Galaxy S4. And this promise is further proven by the notch in the CF-bench test.
Performance
The way the Acube Talk 7X performs in real world also transcends its budget offering and low price. It's obviously nowhere near the top of the league and sometimes does feel like a machine from the past, but it handily beats many of the pricier cellular tablets such as the Lenovo A3000 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0. The 1.3GHz quad-core processor churns through tasks at a fair pace and it's certainly not unpleasant to use.
The animations when swiping between home screens and loading apps show some jitter at times, but there are no real delays. Apps load fast enough, but the difference in performance between the Talk 7X and my LG Optimus G Pro (Snapdragon 600) is noticeable.
Most games play well once loaded as the graphics processing capability of the 7X is actually very good, and with the screen resolution a notch down from that full 1080P, there are no issues.
Playing 1080P videos on the desktop YouTube page is smooth, and the touchscreen remained responsive to any sort of operations.
Multi-tasking works as well as you would expect given the 1GB of RAM on board. Switching apps is fast and painless, but there is a low limit on the number of big apps that can remain in memory. This isn't a reason to run a task killer, since Android manages its memory very efficiently.
The only time this lack of RAM can be an issue is if you have many tabs open in a web browser. Switching to a browser tab that's not in memory will cause the page to reload. Ultimately though, the memory is sufficient for pleasant enough operation.
Connectivity
The Chinese manufacturer has been promoting the Talk 7X tablet as a complete device, which has both phone and tablet qualities. Thankfully, the voice-calling feature on the 7X lives up to the expectation. The call quality on the 7X was impressive and the tablet was able to latch on to cellular networks even in weak signal areas which came in handy at times. There's also Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, FM Radio and GPS on board. The Talk 7X comes in a single 8GB model, but the storage is expandable with Micro SD card of up to 32GB.
Camera
I am not a big fan of the idea of taking pictures with a tablet, to put it mildly, but if a manufacturer is going to include a camera it had better be decent. The Acube Talk 7X’s camera…. is not.
What we're talking about here is a 2MP camera with no flash assistance. Don't even think about grabbing those Instagram-friendly macro shots here. You'll be sorely disappointed, as the backgrounds tend to come out clear leaving the foreground a blurry mess.
That extends to general shots. Images end up washed out, noisy and lacking in vibrancy and color accuracy.
The front-facing camera can get the online video chatting done, but you would never use it for selfie.
Battery
Despite having a fairly small 3000mAh battery capacity, Acube has managed to endow the Talk 7X with decent endurance by using a fairly efficient chipset. In constant use, the tablet is easily capable of 5-6 hours' screen time, which is considered pretty good at the budget end of the market.
The system did very well in standby, idle drain is negligible even with wireless connected.
Thanks to its standard micro USB port, charging the tablet is easy: it accepts any standard cable and is fast to charge for a tablet (With its standard 5V-2A plug it only took about 2 hours to finish a full charge).
Verdict
There's obviously nothing outstandingly good about the Talk 7X, but neither is there anything outstandingly bad. This is a budget tablet that actually exceeds my expectations in many ways. It's keenly priced and very capable.
The good:
For a device in this market segment, the Talk 7X has a PLS LCD screen, with nice color saturation, contrast, brightness and viewing angle, although the 1024 x 600 resolution seems like it's from a bygone era before 720p became the entry-level resolution for phones.
Audio through the built-in speakers is loud and reasonably clear, making this a great tablet for watching videos and listening to music.
Dual-SIM support is pretty useful for people who need two different mobile phone numbers.
At RMB499 ($80), it is affordable both as a phone and a tablet, and its performance is much better than the price would suggest.
The bad:
The rear-facing camera is a pretty poor effort from Acube and there's no real value in including it at this price at all.
The glossy plastic shell gives the tablet a cheap kind of feel, and has low resistance to scratches.
A 7-inch budget tablet that also wants to be a phone sounds like a silly idea. But the Acube Talk 7X is, in use, entirely sensible. It is stonkingly good value if a low-cost portable tablet is what you’re after.

I got in touch with Cube's support staff and they told me that their factory are testing Android 4.4.2 and that it should be released in a couple of days.
I've ordered this tablet, for slightly less than $110 it seems like great value for money. Hopefully I won't be disappointed once I receive it.
I do think Cube could have skipped the rear camera and increased the battery capacity a little instead. (Though I suppose it makes sense to have a rear camera if you use it as your main phone/tablet/phablet, I will mostly use the tablet for movies and games)

very nice review .
i also have this tablet for like a week now and i am very surprised to see that it manages almost every task with such ease.
the only thing in don't like about this tablet is the display unfortunately, ythe colors are not saturated, ther red is quite pinkish blue and green don't have too much power.
i am thinking of calibrating the colors but i don't seem to find an app to do this.
what do you guys think i should do?
thanks in advance

I think you're used to the very oversaturated samsung colours.
I bought this thing 3 weeks ago as an experiment to get my family onto skype.
Conclusion:
This is a supercheap-supertablet,
I compared it next to an Ipad-air(with a comic), and the colours almost match 100% (in my eyes)
viewing angles are excellent, and performance also (compared to price)
We also have a Galaxy Tab2 7", and this little cheap thing (that even can make calls!) outperforms it roughly.
Wow, after 4 years of membership.....finaly, my first post!

iOcean G7 review

Hello everyone,
just made this review about the iOcean G7 a while ago. I cannot post any links or videos yet so I made a small site, for the single purpose it looks a bit better and I can post the photo's and video I made. chinahardware.info/?page_id=9
I left out all the Antutu benchmark stuff, there is already plenty of that to be found. I hope someone finds it informative

Intro & Specifications
Welcome to this iOcean G7 review
The G7 is not the first phone of the Chinese iOcean company but definitely one with a new design. If you are not familiar with the iOcean company you can look up their website iocean.cc or go to their Facebook page. The phone that had put iOcean in the spotlights was the X7 Youth. It has (still) good specifications with a surprisingly low price, making it a very tempting choice. After the X7 Youth there were more ‘adult’ versions as the Turbo, Plus and Elite, all with different sets of specifications and prices. One thing remained: the design. All the X7 models are the same except for their internal hardware components. With the G7 the designers at iOcean made daring step. They slightly changed the design but more obvious: they changed the size of the phone. Where all X7 versions were enjoying a neat 5 inch FULL-HD display, the G7 has a gigantic screen size of 6.44 inch, technically making it a phablet (phone/tablet).
This devices comes with the latest of the MediaTek processors: the MT6592, an octacore processor with the Mali 450 GPU to support it with graphical applications.
My personal questions were if I would be enjoying carrying this colossal phone around and if the GPS-problems with the MediaTek MT6592 would finally come to an end.

Screen/Display
Let’s start with what is most obvious about the device when you see it: the enormous display. With a 6.44 inch display the G7 is one of the biggest devices I ever worked with. It is quite a bit bigger than the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
For the technicians amongst you: the devices comes with a Retina LTPS display and is an OGS, which stands for One Glass Solution. So the screen will be thin with good viewing angles. Since a large amount of the surface of the phone is consisting out of glass, I am glad they processed the screen with laminated glass, meaning it consists of two or more layers of glass and bonding interlayers before fused together though autoclave or chemically.
The above shows us that the display is big, thin, highly scratch-resistant and with the Retina LTPS it also means the display is bright and vivid. When the screen is on full brightness it is very useable in light areas and outside. I used it for a couple of days now and even on these sunny days I could easily read the screen.
This is supported with a stunning 1920×1080 resolution, granting the screen 342 pixels-per-inch. I used the iOcean X7 with 440 pixels-per-inch and I could see some difference but you would have to look closely and search for it. 342 PPI is still very impressive for a screen size this big and reading text is a real charm on this device. Giving the device a higher resolution screen would not benefit the price and the performance of the G7 and I personally think this was the right decision.
In the box I also found a screen protector which I applied directly but since the layered protection of the screen itself I think this is a personal choice.
Another bonus is the fact that you can operate the device wearing gloves or with wet hands. I found out these few days that the display is highly sensitive and I do no longer need my touch screen gloves in the winter which is a real big plus.
Camera
The camera of the G7 is even being used by iOcean to take photos of the new X8 model, which is coming up halfway in April, for their Facebook page. If the company itself is confident enough about the quality is has to say something, right? The G7 enjoys a 13 mega-pixel rear camera which out-of-the-box shoots at 9.5 mega-pixel. This is probably done to save memory and to quicken up the burst-shoot function. At 9.5 MP all photos will be more than sufficient for most uses: Facebook, Twitter, emailing them to friends/family, etc. Switching to 13 MP decreases the field of view as well a bit of speed in burst-mode but it is still very fast and it is barely noticeable. The front camera is 5 mega-pixel and can be used for conference and video calling or to make the much loved selfie. A trend is to not only increase the mega-pixels of the phone but also the aperture of the lens, meaning more light can travel inside which tends to produce better pictures.
I shot some pictures with the G7 myself and I can tell you they are of very good quality. I used different kind of settings; all photos taken inside were under medium-light conditions and outside it is clearly a sunny day. (They are shown on the website.)
One of the things I like to do with my phone is to watch videos on YouTube, mostly with other people. The low quality of the sound and especially the low maximum volume most of the other Chinese phone suffer from sometimes takes the fun away in doing that but with the G7 that will not be the case. The sound can be set to a very loud level while maintaining good quality with no distortion.
Now, something pleasant happened when I laid the phone on its back while playing music: sound actually got better! Thanks to a very smart design feature the G7 device does not fully touch the surface and thereby covering up the speaker grill. A small tab, looking a bit like a stub of the speaker grill, is attached so room is left between the surface and the device hence the sound waves can move freely. It gives a powerful and full sound which I have not heard with many devices. One small point could be that it makes the phone wiggle a bit when lain down but I highly doubt that would bother anyone.
Overall use & Connectivity
The biggest question for me was whether the G7 would fit in my pocket but even with the flip case it fits. Though it is completely understandable when someone would go for the somewhat smaller X7 or better the X8 in April. This is definitely not a one-handed device and both hands are needed to type. It is very useable for watch movies, series, YouTube and the like as reading and typing text. I am a forced user of the public transport every day and I use that time to read rapports for work, etc. Still not as comfortable as a good physical keyboard, on the 6.44 inch screen it is now also workable to edit and type text.
The overall build quality is very good with no plastic-squeaks, a strongly fit back cover and pretty narrow bezels. The only real point of criticism is that the three android control buttons on the chin of the phone do not lit up so in the dark. This may provide an issue when not completely familiar with the device.
The device supports all normal connectivity frequencies used in the West: for Wi-Fi: 802.11 a/b/g/n for both 2.4G and 5G. For mobile internet: HSPA+ 900Mhz/2100Mhz WCDMA.
GPS
The GPS has been a problem with MediaTek devices since a long time and let me happily start by saying that the iOcean G7 gave me a GPS fix in 3 minutes. This was indoors without any connectivity and updated satellite positions. Outside the same set-up gave me a fix in about 40 seconds. Compared to more expensive and well-known mobile phones MediaTek will always lose the battle but for the average Chinese branded mobile phone user this will be a pretty welcome result.
Conclusion
The iOcean G7 is one of the biggest Chinese phones I have ever handled but also one of the better built and designed. The overall quality of the phone is very good, the camera shoots very worthy photos, the sound capabilities are amazing, playing most games is absolutely fun (no stuttering), display quality is very good at least to say, making the G7 a very enjoyable device for everyday use. Considering all this, the price is very reasonable. If you are looking for an affordable mobile phone with a big display, this is probably the one.
A good functioning GPS and a size that still fits my pocket: my questions are answered, how about yours? Please feel free to post comments or send me a message if you have any more questions.
You can also send me an e-mail: [email protected]
Or look up more information on the official iOcean Facebookpage! Please give them some support and click the ‘like’ button.

I am enjoying the use of the iocean G7. It maybe gigantic but it is not heavy.
Battery life is really good. For light use, you can get up to 4 days. For heavy use, you can get at least 2 days.
Does iocean use a "skinned" version of Android like sense or miui?

Its Android 4.2.2, I have not played with HTC or Miui but it feel like the standard Android. It came with Google Play Store and all the other apps. Don't think I see any Chinese apps.
It actually came rooted as well.

Hello,
My Iocean G7 battery lasts about 1 day (wifi and bluetooth always on).
I didn't find how to install CWM on it so I could do a wipe batterie's data.
Does someone has a CWM for Iocean G7 ?
Thanks
Yes a bit

I had no idea but I did a comparison for you. iOcean did use some sort of theme (not a entire skin) for their Android version but you can switch back to the standard Android look with 2 clicks (icon called Theme) does that.
I am using Themer now but in the video review on my website (chinahardware.info) you can still see the iOcean theme.
Does that answer your question?

Mine came with a small theme (mostly the icons were different) but I could switch back any moment.
Yours came rooted? Where did you buy your iOcean G7?

In Settings, under Device Administration, I got Superuser which I turn it on.
I bought my G7 from 1949deal - first time buying from them. Order on Thursday and shipped by DHL and arrived on Monday. I bought the brown case which I think is useless. Cannot find the slip-in case on your video.
I don't use Facebook/bluetooth and have turn off the gesture - thats why I think the battery life last so long.

You mean the orange case? Try Aliexpress.com It's a sideways flip-cover (bad quality btw).
Cannot find the Superuser setting you mentioned but I thought that will only appear when you root te phone, right?
How is the battery life on the phone? Better than other Android phones or just pretty similar?

I bought the orange case - its rubbish.
This guy has a slip case - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXMGeWo0W8Q which is like one of those for spectacles.
Not sure if it is 1949deal that rooted the phone before sending out. I learnt of it from the guy in the above video which is why I bought from the same seller as he did. He mentioned about it here - http://mtkforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=559&p=1929

Battery life depends on how you use it. It has a 3500 mAh battery - huge.
I don't use Facebook or bluetooth or push notification for my GMail. I use Whatsapp, Line, SMS and calls and some surfing.
For light use, I can get more than 3 day. For heavy use, I can get at least 2 days.
I already enjoying the use of the iocean G7. I think its gigantic its not heavy . Battery life is so good. For light use, you can get up to 4 days. For heavy use, you can get at least 2 days. you also use it enjoy it .........................................

The led flash is strong - red light for Whatsapp and green for Line.
Camera is great - people were impress with it when I took photos in a recent vacation.
good day how to root iocean g7 please help.
Bluetooth
The bluetooth is horrible.
There is lag with the headphone bluetooth, sometimes does not pair with bluetooth on the car.
In others features this phone is really good.
I hope that in the next firmware the iocean improve the bluetooth.
G7 flash and recovery
Hey guys,
I am also a proud owner of my G7... I certainly do love it, at the moment I think I have to flash it to a more recent rom since it came with a 4.2.2.
I want to flash to latest but I dont have a custom recovery installed. Will the inbuilt recovery be fine enough?
I am guessing you guys have an idea of what the way to get a recovery and flash it actually... and I use linux with adb and fastboot installed and it can see my device too although I could get a windows computer is necessary.
Thanks

MIUI is always a good choice
http://www.needrom.com/download/miui-by-miuipro-ru-9/
FunTouch OS was also very good
http://www.needrom.com/download/g7-funtouch-os/
To install:
Step 1: From the links above: download the ROM you want and put it on a SD-card. Not in a folder but in the root of the SD-card. Put SD-card in phone
Step 2: Shut down your G7. Not restart but really shut down. Then:
– Power button + volume button up, to enter the recovery mode. (First hold volume up and then press power button and keep volume button pressed until you see the recovery menu)
– Wipe Data / Factory Reset -> delete all user data (use volume buttons to select)
– Wipe Cache Partition -> Wipe cache
Step 3: Return to recovery main interface Install zip from sdcard -> choose zip from sdcard -> Select your ROM
Step 4: Brush complete, restart the phone Patience required – first boot takes a while

Doogee Turbo 2 DG900 Hands on review

Doogee has increasingly improved their products to their customers. Since Doogee DG580, Doogee will release Doogee DG900 and Doogee DG850. I am lucky to get a sample now. And i am glad to share with you. First, i will test Doogee DG900 with you. Because i really like this smartphone with high-end performance.
Exquisite 5inch FHD IPS Corning Gorillia Glass 3 Touch Screen
Doogee Turbo 2 DG900 has updated overally compared with other models, this time, it has 5inch FHD IPS screen with 1920*1080pixels screen resolutions. It is euipped with third generation Gorilla glass touch screen, which can help me prevent scratching. When i open the movie like "The flash", the definition is really high, and screen color is very vivid and real. It's worthwhile to have a try.
Powerful MTK6592 Octa Core 1.7GHz Processor
CPU is quite important for me to play 3D games, when i play Temple Run, the speed is quite swift. Due to MTK6592 Octa core 1.7ghz processor, the overall performance has been improved largely. Couple RAM 2GB ROM 16GB, it has added the speed of the smartphone to search the Internet, play games, watch videos or download any apps and so on. You got know how influential the real tech affect us.
18.0 MP Rear Camera 8.0 MP Front Camera
About the smartphone dual camera, it supports 18MP rear camera and 8mp front camera, as is known to all, most majority of smartphones has the main camera is up to 13.0MP, instead of 18.0MP, however, Doogee DG900 has 18.0mp back camera to shoot the real and ultra-clear pictures to record the unforgettable memory of our life. And 8MP front camera is also incredible to auto shoot for me. I can also beautify the myself by this smartphone.
Rear touch panel, making me do the apps easier
With the rear touch panel, i can now as easy as single handed double tap on back, giving me more freedom to use my hands.
Support 3G, GPS, WIFI, Bluetooth, Multilanguage, Play Store, etc.
Morever, of course it can support 3G and dual sim card, dual standby, which means i can use a 3G network by inserting 3G sim card, the other 2g network by inserting GSM sim card. This smartphone also supports Multilanguage, i can set up it in my mother tongue, which provides the much convenience without language barrier. Google Play store is installed in this smartphone, i can download more than 700,000 apps to perfect my needs. It is built in 2500mAh battery, which can support long working time for me. As for the standby time, it depends on the specific enviorment.
In conclusion, Doogee DG900 is the latest 5inch fhd octa core smartphone with RAM 2GB ROM 16GB. The trendy looks, hardware, functions and so on has increased me to not put it down.
Isn't doogee dg900 a crap?

Do you really think mt6592 can work smoothly on 1080p display? MT6592 can only work smoothly on 720p display and all slim glassphone heats up fast. You may say you just like the glass design, but can you really endure the TINY battery life? If you want to buy a good looking phone at $200 budget you can buy umi zero, even it's also a crap, but it got AMOLED display, SONY IMX135 and METAL design!
I'm looking for good real user reviews. Sound like spam the whole of it like you're selling it.
Spec wise it sounds great but we all know Chinese phones are mostly poor despite specs. However some companies are pulling their fingers out and making good solid devices. I like the look of this as I said so if anyone has one, can you please do a real review with the pros and cons.
Thanks

Not a review, but just a few points...
After my Samsung Note died (finally I am so happy), I bought 2 of these off Alliexpress, I for myself and 1 for my wife 2 weeks later. That was back in November/December of 2014. So we have had 6 months of daily use out of these.
The bad:
1. Started giving errors about no sd card and no sim card inserted. Used some sticky tape on the back of the sim and sd card to keep them in place and slightly increase the thickness. No issues since.
2. On a hot day using navigation (Google maps) and charging the battery, the phone will warn of a thermal shut down while sitting on the dashboard. I guess this is partly due to the protective case not allowing any heat to escape. Th next case will b a more open design.
3. One of the orientation sensors is not right. Google Sky maps gets disorientated when you view op. Down works.
4. Need for Speed crashes. (all other apps I've installed, over 130, works)
The good:
In short, everything else!
1. The 18MP Sony camera is fantastic, even in low light. The Samsung Note camera would not even take a picture in where the Doogee still takes good pictures in low light.
2. It's thin and light.
3. The colors are not as vibrant on the Doogee as on the Note, but the resolutions is exceptional at 443 ppi. Clear and a very good reading angle.
4. On low usage, it will last easily 2 days between battery charges. Where the Note would be dead by 5 PM on a busy day, the Doogee will still have 40% battery life at 9PM . I manage to drain it once by 9PM on the same day. Where on the Note, I had nothing running in the background and did my best to conserve the battery, I have every bit of eye candy installed on the Doogee, from live backgrounds to anything that sucks juice.
5. The Note was sluggish point. With Google Maps running, it was incapable of doing anything else... With the Doogee, I have never see it slow down, ever. Even with Google Maps and Open Street maps both running and navigating at the same time while watching a HD video clip. 8 cores wins every time!
6. The phone comes pre-installed with a screen protector, and there is an envelope with a few spares. After 6 months, the original screen protector is still clear.
7. The sound volume is much louder than the Samsung. You can actually hear the speaker phone even when there is a lot of noise.
8. Has more app storage space than the Note. Always had the Note complaining about storage. Never on the Dogge with more apps and more data installed.
9. Received 3 OS updates from Samsung in the 1st year. Received 3 OS updates from Doogee in the 1st 4 months!
10. The fast charger will charge it from flat to 100% in less than 2 hours!
The phone stays responsive, no matter what you do.
Will I buy another Doogee product, sure, any day.
Hope this help somebody....
