[Q] TW to AOSP TiBU SMS/MMS question - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I did a search and was unable to find a solution to my current situation. I am moving from a TW rom to an AOSP rom and want to move my SMS/MMS messages over. I did a TiBU of the "Dialer Storage 4.1.1 -I53...LK3 (SMS/MMS/APN)" from the TW rom and tried to restore that to the AOSP rom with no luck. The messaging app FC's on the AOSP rom and I just can't seem to get TiBU to work for restoring my SMS/MMS messages. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Not sure if it's the donate version or not, but TiBU gives you the option to save the message in xml format, which I think the format is more compatible. Not positive it's going to work, but it's an option.

You should have backed up the yellow pieces that say SMS/MMS and Call logs. Your best bet is to go back to the TW rom, back up the yellow pieces, flash the AOSP rom and then restore.

When I flash roms
When I flash different roms, I use an app called SMS Backup & Restore, because it writes an XML file to my sd card (I have to go to preferences and set the backup location to ExtStorage). I haven't had this fail on me yet, and I constantly switch between TW and AOSP roms.

When using titanium back, with the xml sms and call backup options, and restored from touch wiz to aosp, i noticed a problem where the call log would be stuck at the last restored call, and no new calls were being logged. I may have had a similar issue with the sms xml restore but cant remember. I eventually decided to just not restore either and start fresh. If i ever truly need those tw call logs and texts for some reason I have a tw nandroid from that time still.

Restoring system data

I wanted to install a custom ROM.
I recently had a Samsung Infuse 4G and it was easy to copy everything over as it has a similar/same firmware.
There are some things I wanted to copy over when installing a new ROM, mainly call logs and text messages and I also like the Samsung contacts app.
Is that possible?
Or do I need to use SMS backup and give up on the call logs?
it is usually not a good idea to restore system data when you flash a new rom so I'm going to guess trying to restore any system data from a different device might not be a great idea

Ritesh Sahu makes SMS backup & restore, also Call logs backup & restore. I use them both to retain messages and calls. Nothing for mms though.

Restore system apps? BAD idea.
Depending on which ROM you're looking will determine if you will have the ability too use the Samsung Contact app. MOST of the current ROM's are not based off of Samsung, in that case you would not be able to use it.
For backing up SMS/MMS/Call logs, I use SMS Backup+. It does them all, and it's free. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...1bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS56ZWdvZ2dsZXMuc21zc3luYyJd

What is the easiest method to change between ROM's?

Hello, and thank you for reading.
I'm a newbie when it comes to ROM's and all concerning them.
So I've been running the latest version of TrickDroid for quite a while now but would like to try some AOSP ROM's also (Liquid/CM/etc.).
As it might happen that I don't like them or I wanted to try an unstable ROM (for testing JB), how could I easily switch back to TrickDroid?
Is there such a thing as multi-boot or anyhting similar?
Should I take a full back with TWRP or what?
And can I have the same apps working with same system/app data on different ROM's; if I restore a full TB it should work fine, right?
Thank you very much.
No multi boot, but take a backup in TWRP and you're back to trickdroid quick enough if you restore it. I never tried restoring apps and appdata with TB as its not recommended especially when going to a ROM on another base like say from trickdroid to liquid or CM. Also stuff like SMS and call logs are tricky since the HTC mms and dialer are not available on AOSP roms so nowhere to restore appdata to.
So other apps should be fine except SMS and call logs?
But shouldn't 'SMS Backup & Restore' be able to put your messages into any ROM no matter what it's based on?

I use titanium backup to restore APPS + DATA on every rom and it has never failed me once.
It even works when jumping between all types of roms i've installed, including: CM, AOSP, sense based and MIUI.
My procedure is always.
1. Make a full backup in TWRP
2. use SMS Backup & Restore for my messages
3. use titanium backup > click batch selection > select Backup all new user apps & newer versions
4. still in Titanium batch selection > select Redo backups for modified data
This way you are straight back to the way you had everything, no matter what rom your on. you only have to redo your home screen
Tb can backup and restore user apps on any Rom.
But you cannot restore system apps between sense and asop
User apps are only downloaded apps so you can restore anywhere even on different phones
You could also if your using a diff launcher back it up and restore it then u won't even have to set up your homescreens.
Hope that clears it up.

Thank you everyone.
This helps a lot.

you could also use ROM manager or Goo manager BETA.. those two apps are available in play store and you can flash ROMs directly from there

[Q] SMS restore

Hi all,
Unlocked and installed CM10 ROM on my Desire S yesterday, all went well and its great having Jelly Bean on my phone. Few bugs here and there but nothing too serious. My problem is restoring my old text messages to the device. Before the installed i backed up my messages from within the Desire S stock messaging app. This created a folder on my SD Card with a file in it,after i unlocked my phone i was able to restore the messages from within the stock app.
After installing the CM10 ROM i cant restore from within the messaging app preinstalled or from any program(SMS Backup etc) in the app store. I take it the HTC stock messaging app can only restore the backup file it made. So is there any work around or are messages gone for good.
Thanks in advance.
You could restore the stock rom, flash SuperSu or superuser to get root access, and backup your messages with titanium backup (preferably xml), then restore cm10 backup and restore messages with titanium backup.
Quite time-consuming, but you would have your messages again.
Or maybe you could extract them straight out of the nandroid backup with titanium backup, but i don't know if that's possible.
A better bet - although it still involves restoring your old ROM - would be to use SMS Backup & Restore. I paid for the full version as I have it set to automatically backup all my text messages at 2am every day, sync the backup with my Dropbox account and keep 3 days of backups.
Yeah thought I'd have to install the old ROM bit of a pain, should of backed them up with a proper app first. Didn't backup the stock ROM take it I can find it somewhere if I decide to go that route..
New to all this, still getting my head around all the terminology. Live and learn. Thanks.

[Q] Restore data from XML (Titanium Backup, SMS/MMS)

HI,
I recently flashed from Trickdriod to ADHD back to Trickdroid on my HTC One (Rogers). I used Titanium Backup to backup all my apps, HTC Sense (desktop), messages, call log, wifi.. etc. I copied the backup to my desktop prior to doing a full SD format and flashing Trickdroid.
Now for the problem, during the restore back to Trickdroid I used Titanium Backup's "restore data from XML" feature, the call log came back fine, but the wifi/MMS does not. Each time I try is force closes the app and a pop up window with "Unfortunately, Titanium Backup has stopped" displays.
I've tried using SMS Backup & Restore to open the XML file as well. Does not work.
Is there any way to get the information from the XML file? Am I doing it wrong?
Thanks,
K.

I upgraded Titanium Backup and was able to restore at least 70% of my messages....
Well first of restoring this type of data is asking for trouble. You should never restore system data as it can cause issues including bootloops and unstable roms. Second no app I know of can backup mms messages properly. This is one of the prices you pay for running custom roms. You will have to put all the Wi-Fi settings back each time.
The reason for this is that with each update the system changes so where the DB files were before may not be where they are in the update. This is why the DB get corrupted when people try this.

I have never had that problem before, it just came up when I went back from 4.2.2 custom rom to 4.2.1. I do allways restore wifi, bluetooth and messages without any problem.
For me it worked when I upgraded TB...I didn`t get 100 % om SMS/MMS back but the most important one

I've been trying to restore my SMS/MMS messages from the XML file I backed up, but I believe some images embedded in the code have corrupted the XML format. I've been trying to clean it up but since it's an 81mb XML file, every editor I use craps out and chugs.
Any suggestions?

You can try but it most likely won't work as each messaging app is starting to use their own sms databases so restoring it won't work completely and no app does mms

I would agree to that - I've switched between messaging apps in the past, and have had issues with restoring data with TiBu, but I realized as long as I stick to the same messaging app, and same TiBu version, it works fine.
I successfully recovered the xml backup (sms & call log) using the older version of Titanium Backup - 7.5.0.1.
I had problem restoring xml backup with new version..
TB hasn't been updated in the Playstore for quite a while!

[Resolved] Titanium backup extract SMS/MMS from nandroid

Device info (just in case it is needed):
Samsung Galaxy Nexus (toroplus)
ROM - Slim Bean
Kernel - Lean Kernel
App - Titanium Backup Pro (purchased key)
My problem:
I have A LOT of SMS/MMS messages on my phone. I like to restore ALL of them between ROM flashes. I usually use Appextractor, but now it is NOT working and does not restore my SMS/MMS. (I am not flashing from MIUI/CM to MIUI/CM so that isn't the issue.) I want to use Titanium backup as my go-to backup and restore app. The only problem is, restoring my SMS/MMS the traditional way (backing up the "app" icon with the sms // backing up to XML) takes WAY too long. Appextractor did this in seconds. Now, I would like to restore my SMS from my nandroid backup from within Titanium backup. I have tried enabling migrate system data, and restoring "Messaging" from the nandroid backup but it does not restore my SMS/MMS.
My question is: How can I successfully restore my SMS/MMS from a nandroid using titanium backup? I have emailed their support and have not gotten a reply in a few days. OR if you know why Appextractor (not the beta) has suddenly stopped working, that would be appreciated too.
PLEASE DO NOT:
I don't mean to sound like a ****, but I am not interested in hearing replies/comments like this:
Why do you have so much SMS/MMS?
Use "this app" to do it, it works! (UNLESS it can restore tens of thousands of SMS quickly, as Appextractor did)
Or suggest not keeping them. I am going to keep them, and would like to find a solution to this problem.
Thanks!
RESOLVED: (thanks to nobody on XDA)
Needed to restore Messaging data in Titanium and NOT messaging. Did not see the actual SMS/MMS before.

I found through trial and error why all the apk and nandroid extractors only work on certain parts of image,if you are trying to for example extract your text messages, only the application the phone has registered as the default application for texting is able to make mods. if you switch whatever extracting program you are using in settings to default sms program it will work as it did before kitkat. hope this helps......
P.S
make sure you remember to switch the default back to normal as soon as you are done and reboot your phone before you text anyone,

I made a nandroid using TWRP on my Moto X running 4.4.2. Now I am updated to 4.4.4 and want to extract my texts messages from my 4.4.2 nandroid. I selected the Phone/Messanging Storage for extraction, data only. Titanium B/U extracts the texts fine and the messanging app works fine UNTIL I reboot - after rebooting I can send texts but not receive them anymore.
Any thoughts on why Titanium B/U is messing with my 4.4.4 messanging app?

They're in the format for whatever you exported them for. Soooo 4.4.2 in your case.
For example, restore the 4.4.2 Nandroid, export with https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync&hl=en , install 4.4.4, reimport with that too. Or restore 4.4.2 Nandroid, update to 4.4.4 'normally', then you got them in 4.4.4 format.

The text restore fine, it is just that after I restore them I can't receive texts. I can send texts, just not receive them. So Titanium B/U is doing more than just restoring my texts, it is messing with the messanging app somehow. I suspect it may have something to do with the APN.
I have seen others post on other forums about having this problem.

You mean return to 4.4.2, unroot and then take the 4.4.4 OTA? I am likely going to try that. Since my Bootloader is already 4.4.4 it should be fine. From what I recall being posted here in the past, the OTA installer will recognize that my bootloader is up to date and move on to the next item and not try to patch a 4.4.2 bootloader.
I will search the thread to make sure I am remembering this correctly, but IIRC the poster who first posted this was very knowledgeable.
I also could try doing it through the Motorola Device Manager.

Did this, ended up with the same problem.
Noob/idiot alert.....
I've just tried to restore my SMS's by TiBu, but I think I've f'd up a bit.
I ticked 'data only' in TiBu and restored 'phone/messaging storage', but it seems restoring from a HTC M7 Sense backup to an M7 5.1 GPE rom doesn't quite work. (I stupidly thought data would be compatible)
Now the phone just keeps popping up com.android.phone has stopped. no matter how many times I click it keeps popping up.
Unfortunately I didn't make a backup in TiBu before trying this out.
I'm sure I can fix it with a factory reset, or at worst a re-flash, but I'm away from my computer and wifi for a few more hours yet.
Is there a way I can un-do what I did, or fix this in some way, in the mean time?
** IGNORE **
I remembered I had a backup of the original rom, so I've just restored that for the mean time.
