Bloatware Removal List captivate (froyo)

This is a list of all the bloatware apps at&t installs by default on the Samsung Captivate. This list can be used in both Froyo (2.2) and Eclair (2.1). Some of the apps are AT&T apps while the other apps are Samsung apps. All the apps in this list can be removed without damage to your device. It is up to you whether you want to remove the samsung apps or not. If going for a vanilla android feel on the device, then uninstall all Samsung and AT&T apps in this list.

hey thanks this was clutch but for some reason everyone has worked so far except ATT hotspots and that is the one that i want off the most! maybe a typo? or maybe it is named something else for my phone although i think this is highly unlikely bc i am running JI6 and all the others worked

Okay after I updated to Froyo on my Captivate (and rooted) I tried to remove the bloatware and for some reason under Apps the shortcuts for MobiTV and AT&T Maps and com.telenav.app.android.cingular are still there and don't go away after a reboot. Any ideas?

Titanium Backup is working to remove most of this stuff as well. So if anyone's having trouble, maybe try this.
Android market->titanium backup
go to Backup/Restore
allow super user access
go!

Why would you list google maps as AT&T bloatware?
Also, memo pad is decent memo app and it is not AT&T branded. My files is a file explorer that is on all the Samsung phones - not AT&T bloatware, but maybe not as good as Astro.
Also, if you want the Samsung desk app to display weather, you need Daily briefing. It is not AT&T either.

Google Maps
The reason that Google Maps is listed is that it is better to get the version off the market. There have been problems of installing updates to google maps, so by removing the version of google maps that ships in ROM, one can easily upgrade to the latest version through the market. The list is simply just that, a list. It is not obligatory to delete the apps on the list. It is merely there to inform people of the apps that can safely be removed and return the phone to stock apps as much as possible.

You need to remove these in order to get rid of the links to the deleted apps.

Since I'm new to this whole thing...having an unlocked AT&T Captivate should do it right? I just need Root explorer or Busybox? I've read there are numerous ways and I was wondering which was the safest and most convenient.

I just loaded a new 2.2 rom that came without all the bloatware. For the most part, that's a good thing, but I miss the Mini Diary. Any chance someone wouldn't mind sharing that apk? thanks!

As long as by "unlocked" you mean rooted and by root explorer you mean titanium backup and by busybox you mean the busybox titanium will install for you. Yeah its easy.

I should have realized theres something way better out there than the apple OS.
Anyways my question: how to remove these applications listed?

I recommend that you use Root Explorer. When you install it and open it up for the first time it will ask you for root permission, grant the permission. Once inside root explorer go to /system/app/ and this will be where all these apps are located. Then look at the list to see which app you want to delete. Long press on the app (ends with .apk) and select delete (or remove, cant remember what the option is) if it gives you an error click on the button on the top right that says mount R/O or mount R/W then retry to delete the app. This should do it. If you need additional help, let me know.

You could also use Titanium Backup to remove bloatware.

ok new to xda and all of this so bare with me plz...got a couple questions.
does my phone have to be rooted to remove at&t crap off of it or can I just use titanium backup?
also does rooting it change the way it looks esthetically or is it basically in noob terms basically the same as being an "administrator" on your pc?
and last stupid question...
what are the purpose of custom roms? what do they actually do?

Yes, in order to remove the bloatware, the phone needs to be rooted.
Rooting does not change anything esthetically. Yes, rooting is basically the same as getting administrator rights.
Custom roms are basically custom configurations of the operating system put together by other people.

On the OP, the links to removing each item, are they found by means of plugging the phone in as USB mass storage, or do you have to be in debugging mode with the SDK Program?
Also, I'm mostly just interested in hiding the apps rather than removing them, because from what I've heard, deleting original apps is permanent and you can't get them back. Is there an easy way to do this?
I thought "Freezing" an App with Titanium Backup Pro would do this, but I can still see them in my Application Drawer :/

if youre reffering to removeing em just install super one click app on pc remove marketplace lock then install sdx stock app to remove em use the app on the phone doesnt have to be connected to pc it has a backup option i back up everything i remove and it removes em and i have restored apps with it , it works

[Q] Rooted, but can't delete apps???

I recently rooted my Skyrocket (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340526) but am unable to delete apps. I have full superuser access and have even installed a custom ROM already, but the only option when I go to "manage apps" is to delete the updated version. I've even tried deleting the apps using Launcher Pro's method (long holding on the trash icon) and it just says "Uninstall unsuccessful."
So, what gives? Why am I rooted and don't have full access over my apps??

EDIT: Also, just to add, I have apps that came with the stock phone (like AP Mobile, AccuWeather, etc.) that I can see in the manage applications list under ALL but they aren't in my app drawer. So I get the worst of both worlds: some apps I can't access and can't uninstall!

Root doesn't change the fact that the apps are protected system apps. The default uninstaller will still stop you from fully removing them.
You can easily download a free app from the market, such as Root Uninstaller, to remove protected system apps. Just be careful, as you can so remove vital system apps crucial to the operation of android with root Uninstaller. Only remove apps you are sure won't hurt the system.

Many of the roms don't have the bloat. Look them over and see if any fit your needs. You'll need rom manager (marketplace). Before flashing any of the roms for this phone, read the threads associated with each one, so you'll have an idea about any issues. Make sure you also understand the consequences of flashing a rom.

You dont need rom manager. I dont use it. But some people prefer it.

Keep in mind. You can flash the stock recovery tar and still take an ota update. But if you delete bloat you can not. Youll have to flash back to stock. Unless you have a nandroid backup with bloat intact.

For those who are new to this, like me, it is the easiest way, after looking over some of the guides.

And if you choose to use rom manager. You have to select the tmobile galaxy s2. Skyrocket is not listed. But it is almost an identical phone.

Just download titanium backup, it can uninstall protected apps.

Thanks for the help everyone. I just moved from the Atrix which didn't have protected systems apps after bypassing the bootloader.
I ended up installing "Sky Ice Cream Sandwich" which I thought didn't have bloatware but it still shows up... And I did use ROM Manager but that was just because I wanted to get into CWM easier.
Anyway, I found a list of apps I can uninstall here so I'll just be using Titanium Backup since I've already purchased it.

Unable to delete bloatware from phone

I'm still unable to delete apps, as u might know, lenovo a850 comes with many useless chineese apps. I have disabled/frozen them, now I'm missing some internal memory.
I rooted my phone with framaroot, installed supersu.
then I tried removing apps with Es file explorer, I gained superuser access to it, and to all apps below, but "operation failed" . Same thing happened to Root explorer.
Later on, I have downloaded no bloat, It says "(app) deleted" but when I exit app and come back in, the app is still there. Same thing is with Titanium backup, I can select uninstall app, it fake uninstalled it, but when I reboot my phone, app is still there, no mater what I do.
Also, I tried using recovery exploit, phone reboots, but the app(s) still remain there
If anyone had same or similar issue, I would've really appreciate any help.

Try root browser and locate the apps mostly it's in system/apps ....and delete the apk and restart ur phone ...

Now, I managed to find why it is unable to delete apps, because permissions.
However i can't change them either. Using total commander, es file explorer or using terminal, every time I get the same error.

First thing first,
WHY...WHY DO YOU MANUALLY DELETE IT?
No offense bud, but yeah after you did that, you missed its registry, permissions, licenses and crap.

Do you actually got root access? You should make the Uninstaller app to ALWAYS GRANT and try again. If no success screenshot me the error popup you are facing.

The thing is, there is no error showing, after "deleting" app, it disappears, but after re-running app, it appears again. The thing is I cannon't change r/w access on .apk files in system/app folder. Even using apps that can change permissions and after granting them.superuser access, I'm unable to change it. On my old phone, after rooting my phone I could easily delete .apk filrs using ES file browser.

Unknown volume huh? Can you execute it? If you can't, I guess you can clean it up by using SD Maid. If the app is even functional....

I would say the abruptly choice to is to COMPLETE WIPE (ROM,kernel,bootloader) and install new ROM. That's my level of expertise, no beyond that.
I mean, something glitched your volumes that they registered empty in kernel but not in the software, or a triple-A type of administration crapware that's preloaded within the ROM which, "BY ANY MEANS...TOP SECURITY SYSTEM APP PROTECTION PREVENTS ANY SOFTWARE-LEVEL DATA TERMINATIONS! ENSURES APPS ARE IN FACTORY STATE, NO MATTER WHATEVER LEVEL OF BREACH INJECTION! DESIGNED BY CHINA COMPANIES! PROVIDED TO YOU!"....
Well that thing actually exists, FYI, and that's the working theory right now.
In addition, try logging via CatLog, cause that is very little log lines for me to decipher.

Yea, try MTKDroidTools, I never used it but I've been convinced it will work.

removing app from priv-app

Hello,
today I noticed a popup on my phone. I downloaded malwarebytes and found an app in /system/priv-app. malwarebytes can't delete it and I tried it with System app remover (ROOT). It also tells me that it worked but the folder is still there.
Is there another way to delete system apps?

Deny it data access? Freeze/suspend?

I tried that too, but it looks like anything what I do doesn't affect the files in priv-app folder. I tried a small test with another app and same thing, like I can't do it even with root access. Or is it just my app? Which one would work?

I use Link2sd to integrate all system apps into the modded stock ROM. It works, but the data is wiped. Still, better than Titanium BU integration. Link2sd also has an uninstall feature, to. I imagine it may be as successful for you.

Can't delete bloatware

Hi guys,
So I just unlocked my phone using xperifix and I tried to delete all the bloatware using 2 apps I found in the play store but I was unable to. The phone just tells me the uninstall failed and i dont even know why
Any idea why this is happening?

Titanium Backup is possibly the best app for a rooted phone. It will uninstall any app.

You can go into TWRP, mount System partition, then hit the FileManager under Advanced, and then change permissions/delete files/folders accordingly.
But be careful, there seems to be some wierd dependencies going on in there, and you end up with some random FCs here and there after removing bloat app folders and such.
My personal advice if you want to be free of headaches, just 'freeze' the apps using say 'Advanced Tools' from appstore (my recommended app freezer and general swiss-army tool).
