Upgrading Questions - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Our current plan has my S3 and my wife's Droid X2 on it, both with unlimited data. It also has my mom and dad's dumb phones on it as well.
If we get a used smartphone, for example a galaxy S2, from a friend and activate it on her line will she still be able to keep unlimited data? Does it matter that she's going from a 3g phone to a 4g?
Also, if we upgrade one of the dumb phones to a smartphone the same way (by getting a used one, not subsidized), I know that line won't be able to have unlimited data, but would it force the other unlimited lines (ie. All lines on the account) to a tiered plan? Or would that one line be tiered and the others unlimited?
Thanks!

I just upgraded my wife to the s3 and we both had unlimited data but she lost hers. I got my s3 on pre order so I kept my unlimited data and by upgrading her it did not affect my line. Only the line you are upgrading. Also I believe you will still be ok from 3g to 4G as long as you are not being the new every two deal from Verizon.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium

That's interesting that upgrading her line didn't effect yours. Everyone at Vzw I have talked to has said that subsidizing a phone will cause the whole account to move to a tiered plan, so that's good to know!
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2

I thought that too but I did an upgrade in Nov, I most my unlimited but my wife still has hers.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app

I was wondering the same thing when I upgraded. I read in many forums that if you transition from 3g to 4g and upgraded on unlimited that as long as you bought the phone from a different source ex. Ebay that you would be able to keep your unlimited data. Unfortunately I went the cheap route and downgraded to a limited 2gb plan after my incredible. So im not positive if that works from experience.

I asked multiple people at Verizon and best buy (where I got her the phone) and they all said it will only affect the line that was being upgraded. I wanted to be absolutely sure because I need the unlimited data she does not really. I checked my bill and only hers was changed.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium

I can't remember where I heard this, but I was told that upgrading a line with unlimited data would put only that line onto the tiered plan...UNLESS it is the account holder. If the account owner upgrades, everyone is put onto the tiered plan (so I heard).
No clue if there is truth to that, but it's worth trying to find out.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2

That could be true, I wasn't the main account holder. Just ask, they know people don't want to give it up.
I got the s3 for $.98 in black Friday, it was too good to pass up. I don't use that much anyways.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app

I work at a Premium Retailer and can hopefully clear this up for you. When you upgrade, only the line you are upgrading is affected. In the OP's case, if you wanted to upgrade a basic phone to a smartphone, that phone would be tiered but you would retain your own unlimited data. Just as long as an upgrade does not use your line you are fine. This is true for any line that has unlimited data. Verizon no longer has "primary" lines. They did away with those when the came out with Account Level Pricing plans like 2 years ago. Buying a used phone will also allow you to keep unlimited data. Just don't buy an S2 because there wasn't an S2 on Verizon and so it wouldn't work. As far as tiered/Share Everything plans, they're not required. Any rep telling you that one person upgrading forces everyone onto tiered/Share Everything is either intentionally lying or wasn't trained properly.

Alright awesome, thanks for clarifying that everyone! And thanks for helping tip about not getting an S2. That would have been a pretty big disappointment! I was thinking about going with a used Nexus possibly for her. You guys have any other suggestions? Also where would be a good place to look for a used phone?

I have bought from swappa, if I buy used again, I will check them first.

I pretty much always buy from eBay or Craigslist. On ebay I tend to buy from recognized sellers so if the phone isn't to my liking I have the option of returning it. As far as phone suggestions I love my nexus but hardly use it compared to my s3 because the battery life is so poor. If she doesn't necessarily care about custom roms the RAZR m can be had for around 200 last I saw and that is a pretty solid phone despite the locked bootloader in my opinion.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using XDA Premium HD app

Ok cool I'll look at the RAZR too. Good battery life is important for her, but roms and customization aren't at all.

Has anyone gotten this to work?
For this to work, att can't have the imei of our phone. This leaves out the att version sold by best buy USA.
But what about the Canada version?

If you cant pay you cant play...... Seriously if you cant afford another 10 dollars you shouldn't have bought the phone.
Ok asshole. Instead, I'm a high schooler who wants a dev phone (relying on just the sdk emulator is a *****), and has to pay for it by myself because the nexus s isn't on Verizon, which is what my parents have. I can't sign a contract for another 10 months because I'm not old enough. And I can't afford to wait until the prime, because I have work I want to finish right now.
I'm not using the medianet plan. I'm using the $50 unlimited plan. They work the same, because at&t scans for imeis of known smartphones that they sell, like the atrix. I was just wondering if the canadian nexus s worked because recently best buy USA started selling an att version.
My nexus one never worked on it (only text and calls), so I was just wondering about the s. I can get a new white one for cheap.
Edit: but seriously dude why would you come to a random person and say stuff like that? I guarantee you wouldn't say it to my face. I bet you wont even call me and say it. Why do you think you're so much better because you can sign a contract and pay extra money?
AT&T Crack Down
AT&T will eventually find out that you are using an excessive amount of data throughput via "medianet". I know there was an iPhone 2g trick that would fool AT&T into allowing the $15 plan; however the access in which your smart phone "dials out" to AT&T would expose your phone as being a smart phone. I had an N1 on AT&T and they knew the IMEI number... I bought it via Google too. AT&T has their ways...
The only thing you could do is get the NS, w/ or w/o a 2yr plan and use the DataPlus plan for $15. (If cost is an issue.)
Cost isn't the issue, its the contract. I can't sign one. I'm on an incredible s right now from Canada on the dumb phone plan with ATT and I was just wondering if the nexus would know or not. They knew about my n1 but not my inc s.

I bought one prior to it releasing on AT&T (through Best Buy mobile) and it worked fine on the $10/$15 MEdiaNet Data plan. Decided to sell it as soon as AT&T released it as their own. I've been wondering the same question lately seeing it's one of the best android phones for the price (I can get a used Rogers one for about $300 unsubsidized.) I'm currently using the Desire Z from Bell Canada on the MEdiaNet plan.
P.S. Would you be willing to sell your Incredible S for around $300?
No thanks, I'm looking for closer to 400 on it. But OK cool the nexus worked

the unlocked t-mobile version isn't seen as a smartphone by at&t and the poor soul who had the nexus one that was spotted as a smartphone, if yours had the t-mobile frequencies then you were just unlucky.
if its built with t-mobile 3g then it will only connect to the EDGE network and i don't think at&t really cares.

Thanks for chiming in 17 days late. So I'm on a high horse because I think trying to cheat a company out of 10 bucks was stupid? Are you going to support him when he comes back and asks how to download paid apps for free? Where are you going to draw the line? Everyone should just stop. I figured it all out, I'm now on straight talk for unlimited everything + 2gb data for $45 a month, and it uses AT&T towers (mvno carrier). This plan worked better, but it requires a $100 fee to start up, but I paid the price because I can't sign contracts.
I wanted to use the medianet plan because I can't sign a contract while I'm under 18. I never wanted to get free apps, or do anything like that. I've been around XDA for a bit, dabbled in devving for a few phones, and I'm pretty sure some of my threads are even stickied. I know the rules etc.
All that said, PLENTY of threads are on XDA about taking advantage of the medianet loophole. It saves $20+ a month, and data is unlimited (not available to other plans) and unthrottled. Many people have no problem sticking it to a corporation that they hate like AT&T, and IMO unlimited data should be unlimited.. smartphone or not, so I had no problem with the idea of it.

I bought a rogers nexus s (french+english text on box) and they changed my data plan
I got a white i9020a (canadian?) and they changed my dataplan from medianet to a smartphone They can't have the IME number though.. and I tethered all the time on my Nokia E71 w/ medianet so I don't think it was data usage that tipped them off.
How could they know I got an i9020a Nexus S? Maybe a heuristic like if you download from Google's market servers you're on a smartphone?

Yeah I was looking the other day at phones and just had to ask also. No go for the unlimited on new phone unless you pay full price.
But I knew the answer before I even went in.
I actually went to Verizon yesterday and talked to a guy about the plans.
Yes, Verizon will no longer have unlimited data available to anyone... no matter if you're "grandfathered" in.
However, check your monthly data usage... you might be surprised at how little of data you actually do use each month.
Turns out that when it comes time for me to change my plan, I'll be saving more money from month to month.
This does vary from person to person, though. It's definitely worth looking at.
You can also keep your unlimited data by not renewing your contract and buying a phone from offline somewhere or at full price from Verizon. Just call Verizon and tell them you need to make an ESN swap to active your new phone.

They won't get rid of it if you currently have the unlimited data plan unless you renew or sign a contract. Unlimited data is no longer an option with the service plan.
As long as you keep the Verizon service and do not sign into another contract, unlimited data will be with you.
If you want to upgrade to another phone, you'll have to buy it off of the internet from someone or walk into Verizon and pay full price for the phone only... without starting a new contract or plan.
This is the only way you can avoid losing unlimited data.

You will not be able to change from one phone to another online anymore either.
If you do, it will tell you that changing to this device requires a change to your plan.
If you want to change from the Thunderbolt to... let's say a Galaxy S3, you'll have to call Verizon and talk to a customer service rep. and they will have to change it for you. Just tell them you need to make an ESN swap from the Thunderbolt to the Galaxy S3 and they will have no problem what so ever in changing it over for you without making any changes to your "plan"... even if you don't technically have one and they will not force you into a contract either. *At least not yet* and let's hope it stays that way.
Verizon will not turn down paying customers.

S iii vs razr maxx

I currently have a RAZR maxx and I'm being offered by Verizon to switch to the s iii because of problems with recent replacement phones.
2 questions.
1. Is this a smart move? Newer phone less battery.
2. I have a very old cheap unlimited data plan. I am scared of loosing it. Could that happen? I have lost a text plan this way in the past.
Thanks in advance.

I used to dread data caps, but I did an inventory of all my usage and I never really needed more than 3 average, a few months of 5 or more but I just do updates over Wi-Fi now or large downloads like wise, I have an s3 and I absolutely love it. Battery life is the best I've ever seen, came from an evo, still use that too. Gs3 is definitely a good buy.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
It not so much the data cap. It's the almost $100 a month it would cost me more for just 2gb. It is a great plan!

So if u accept the s3 they'll force u to give up the unlimited?
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Not worth it. Don't lose your unlimited data plan. Buy the phone on craigslist then sell your RAZR maxx.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
They won't take unlimited away due to a swap. Swapping devices due to bad replacements is not renewing your contract. Just like if you buy a phone for full retail it doesn't take unlimited away either.
If you can swap without losing your unlimited data plan then definitely go for it
My mom had the razr and step dad razr maxx, but i put a custom rom in the razr, pretty much the same as maxx minus extra battery power . I have s3, i think S3 is better. Motorola is behind on roms, more restricted I think. But still a great looking phone. But you can't change the battery on the razrs, so s3 wins in that department imo.
There is a thread in the stickies for other phone discussions
Thanks

Keeping Unlimited data - new issue

So today I tried to get the S4 via and upgrade and keep my unlimited data using the loophole method of transferring an upgrade from an unlimited line to a non smartphone line on the same account, then doing the alternative upgrade and transferring the new phone from the previously non smart phone line to the desired unlimited line. The Vzw reps said that this might work but I might lose my unlimited data. I have previously done this method before and successfully kept my unlimited data when I upgraded to the S3, but im not sure if this loophole still works. Has anyone experienced anything similar to this or know any info? Has anyone done this recently and lost unlimited data?
Somebody on here said if you call and ask before upgrading you can keep your unlimited. Probably depends if you ask the right person.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Eventually Verizon is going to get you one way or the other. JUst their way of extracting more coin.
Eventually after haggling for awhile, another guy that worked there said I would be able to do the alternative upgrade and keep unlimited data if I did a SIM card swap a few days after upgrading, does anyone know any more info on this?
P.S.
Not sure if this should be in Q&A instead since its not really a GS3 question, so sorry if this is in the wrong area.

I tried this same thing just a week ago and was told that I could not. I have been watching Craigslist for someone that has used their upgrade and does not like the phone. They tried to get me to migrate to the family share plan. No thanks! I have 3 with unlimited and 1 not.

Uh all you have to do is upgrade the line with non unlimited data then once that's done you just log back in to your Verizon account or tell vzw rep to put the old phone back to that line. Now you have a phone with no contract. Do a device swap with the line has unlimited data and voila its like you bought a phone at full price or from craigslist

This is what I was originally planning on doing, because I've done that before and it worked. The verizon rep said that verizon is cracking down on this loophole and that if I did this it would get tagged as suspicious account activity and Verizon would then take the unlimited data away on the line that I transfer the phone to. He also said I wouldn't be able to get it back even if I undid the upgrade and all account changes within the allotted 14 days. He said there was a 50/50 chance it would work. I think the guy was just trying to b.s. me though based on what I've read.

Same thing happened to my friend that upgraded last week. Verizon would not let him do the alternative upgrade so he lost his unlimited data. I have only heard of one person in the last month that was successful in having a Verizon employee do the alternative upgrade.

It should work fine and if VZW stops it, it's just greed (surprise, surprise). The act of getting a subsidized phone on your account is what kicks you off unlimited data. If someone else, already on a capped plan gets the upgrade and gives you that phone, it's not VZW's business (or shouldn't be) as long as that person is happy.
I was planning to get a GS3 off of Craigslist in order to keep unlimited data but my wife wouldn't take a "used" phone so I knew she'd get a subsidized phone and we'd be kicked off unlimited data anyway.... So I got my (new) GS3 for $30 from Amazon.
I added a line for my kid and got S3 but took the s3 the next day and put it on my unlimited line and gave him my phone....Also find my post of how I kept my unlimited for my wife after her upgrade. Sometimes like some say it might be just who u talk to at Verizon.

I hear ya but loyalty doesn't mean much to verizon. They will take your unlimited away. There's a higher probability that they remove vz navigator than letting you keep your unlimited data.

Ditching my smartphone

So I wasn't sure where I should post this. But I need some advice.
I just upgraded my phone and signed a two year contract with Verizon in August. However, I am really feeling the need to ditch my smartphone because it's taking up too much of my time away from what's truly important in my life. My wife, kids and work.
What is the best way to get rid of my phone. I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 and 21 months left on my contract.
I really would like to be able to get a cheap "dumb" phone without having to pay too much.
Anyone have any suggestions of how I could do this?
Hopefully this thread doesn't get shut down.

At least with other carriers, your "contract" is only for the voice portion.
Buy a cheap dumbphone (ebay, craigslist or new), activate it and cancel the data plan.
Done.
Really? I assumed I would have to keep a data plan on this number for the duration of contract.

Really? I assumed I would have to keep a data plan on this number for the duration of contract.

I can confirm with with AT&T
I was able to cancel my brothers Data plan and switch his phone to the 7.99 plan
to an old flip phone
he broke his phone and didnt' have insurance I called up At&t and they said I was able to alter my plan with no charge
So I sold my S3 and am currently back on my old DX2. I may stay on this for a while. I told myself that I was gonna switch over to an Ifone but I'm not sure that I can bring myself to drop 400 on a 5. I may use the money to buy an Ipad mini on swappa. Crazy that a tablet is cheaper than a phone....
