Looking for a case that covers USB port - Nexus 4 Accessories

I Bought my mom a Galaxy S3 and the otterbox case and I like how it covers the USB port to prevent dirt from getting into it.
My question is, is there something like that for the Nexus 4, I have the nexus 3 and it's gotten the always charging indicator and the power level is kind of out there (showed 43% for a couple hours popped the batter out and back in and it was at 11% instantly) so I am getting ready for a nexus 4 but want a case that will cover it since the only time I need it exposed is when it's charging. (also help full if it supports a larger battery not a deal breaker though).
I've tried searching but all of them I can find has the USB port exposed or what looks like it is exposed

I'm not sure you'll ever be able to get a larger battery, so there are no cases to support them.
I, too, have never seen one that covers the USB port. I'd think that might be a more common request thanks to wireless charging.

You can find the little rubber USB and headphone plugs on eBay.

Might get one myself, wireless charging means the port doesn't get used as much as previous phones.

oh cool, I didn't think they sold just the cover by itself I thought I had to find a whole case for them.

While my Nexus 4 is still on the order queue, I'm looking for a case. Not sure yet.
I'm currently looking at the Rearth Ringke Fusion, Mecury TPU, and the Cruzerlite Bugdroid Circuit TPU.

A bumper with port covers too!
I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a a protective bumper with micro usb and earphone port covers. I use wireless charging and bluetooth earphones and seldom use those ports.
The separate plugs look kinda cool except for the fact that I would have two little extra pieces of plastic/rubber to keep track of, ugh.

Search eBay for " Black Rugged Hybrid Hard Case Belt Clip Holster Kickstand Google LG Nexus 4 E960 ".. Covers earphone jack and USB port.. Be warned though, this case has a toxic odor that doesn't go away for like a week or 2.

I've had about 5 of those now. They always fall out when I'm putting it in my coat pocket. For the USB port at least.

RND Nexus 4 dock review

Hey guys, I bought this Nexus 4 dock on Amazon and received it today. It's specifically designed for the Nexus 4 and fits like a glove. It is currently OOS but this dock looks exactly the same and is $10 cheaper than what I paid. D'oh! The dock works with or without a case thanks to a little insert that changes the size of the dock port. I tested the dock with my Diztronic TPU case and without.
What I like about the dock:
Plain and understated design with no logos or blinky LEDs
Matches the Nexus 4 with or without case perfectly
Works with or without a case
The N4 slides onto the micro usb port with little hassle. I think this will end my attempts to put in the micro usb cable upside down in the dark before falling asleep.
Surprisingly, the speaker doesn't sound too muffled despite being covered by the dock. I was able to comfortably have a conversation over speakerphone and watched a couple YouTube videos without issue.
You can lightly tap things on the screen without it tipping over
Charging works fine thus far. You can also plug it into a computer USB port to sync stuff
Cheap, at least compared to a Qi charger
What I don't like:
You need to hold the base with one hand to pull out the N4. It's made out of hollow plastic. A heavier, more solid feel would be nice, but the base would probably have to be made out of iron to slide out the N4 with one hand.
Included USB cable is short, around 3 feet long
Included wall charger works, but looks and feels cheap. I just plugged in my OEM charger instead
Here's a flickr set of some additional pics I took of the dock.
I'd highly recommend this little guy. IMO, current Qi chargers aren't worth the high cost for the extra convenience they provide. This dock strikes a better balance of convenience and price, and doesn't scrap too much on quality where it counts.
Looks decent. I had something similar for my old Evo. Be interesting to compare to the new Orb one. I just like the idea of magnets doing the work and not worrying about misalignment of the usb port.

Agreed, the orb charger looks ideal. That said, I don't think that this dock will hurt my micro usb connector - I can dock it with far less fuss than connecting the wire manually. But maybe that's just me and my poor hand-eye coordination. :highfive:
This looks ideal. Does anyone have a link to order one from Hong Kong? I have much better luck ordering from there to Canada than I do from the US...
Not sure if this is the same dock, but looks almost identical: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KiDiGi-Ne...520772?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item2327426fc4
A question to the OP, I noticed from your pics that you were able to use the dock whilst the Nexus was in a Distronic case...was this a comfortable fit? I have bought the Ringke Fusion which is similar in shape to the case you're using.

Yep, the Diztronic case fit perfectly. Not too snug, not too loose. The phone slides down to the USB connector just by gravity alone. You then push the phone down a little and it locks in.

I know that the bumper is a little thicker than most TPU cases so I doubt it. The fit with the TPU case is pretty close.

I own 2 of the RND docks, one for an HTC Inspire and one for the Galaxy Note. I went to buy one for the Nexus 4 but it was out of stock then Google had the Orb so I ordered that instead (a lot more expensive but I need to keep the phone for 2 years at least so might as well enjoy it). I really do like these docks, they are very easy to drop your phone into, holds it at a very nice angle and I have never worried about damaging my USB port with it (unlike the Samsung Car Dock which always worried me).
I may still buy one of these for travel as they are small and seem to pack up well. I cant speak to this one specifically as I don't own it but if it is anything like the other two I have it is a very well build product. The one thing that has me a bit concerned is the statement about the cables. The cable they shipped with the old ones were definitely not short, I use one in my bedroom and it is about 6' long. They used to ship a long charge only cable and a shorter data cable, maybe they stopped doing that.
@rmgill Just wanted to thank you again for the recommendation. I bought the cheaper version you linked to in the OP and it appears to be the same as the more expensive one you bought. Very nice dock and killer price. Unfortunately, they're out of stock or I'd pick up another one for my desk at work.
I have a Ringke slim case on it and it slides into the dock with just the right amount of tension. Doesn't feel flimsy or particularly cheap and the back supports it well enough that I don't worry about the microUSB port getting damaged. Definitely recommend it.

No problem, glad you're enjoying it! I'm planning on purchasing another for my desk as well within the next month.

To «ORB» or not to «ORB», THAT is the question.

This is what it is stopping me from getting the Google ORB for my N4 >
I have a case (and if you don't, I commend you for your bravery). Not only I have a case, I have the Ballsitic Case, the sturdiest of them all, not intended to be taken off and on, on a blink, not at all.
And then I thought> the purpose for the orb is to avoid your self from the hassle of aligning the microUSB plug with the port and all, but if I have a case, what would be faster? To plug a cable to a phone with a case, or to incur on taking a case off in order to "avoid the hassle" of plugging.
It is more work for me to take the case off than it is to plug a micro USB cable, so no ORB for me...
Am I alone?
Imo, you don't need one. It's more of a luxury than anything. But if you like it aesthetically and have the extra dough, why not.

i have the extra dough, and still passed on it. it looks very cool but for me to be truely satisfied i need one for the office, and the house. not worth 140 to fit my want. cables work fine.
as most have said the orb isnt needed but im not gonna lie it looks cool as hell! im still undecided if im gonna drop the dough for it. I also need to confirm if the ringke fusion case will work with it too. so yeah, theres that....

I agree completely here. I would possibly consider a $40 charger but $70 is justification for the hassle of picking up a microUSB and plugging it in.
I have the Zens wireless charger and it works with the ringke slim case. I bought the Zens literally a week before the orb went up for sale. Ain't that a b*tch. I bought the orb anyway to have one at work and at home and to report back on a comparison.

wait until other people with the ballstic case have got the orb to confirm whether it works or not before deciding imo
Consider a dock instead. I'm happy with mine thus far. Less than half the price of a Qi charger, almost as convenient, but admittedly less futurist.
I am buying it because I had to replace my last galaxy nexus micro USB port because it went bad. I live in Florida and we have a lot of problems with corrosion. I cant tell you how many ports I've replaced over the years because of that I now have those silicon plugs on almost all my devices ports so I don't have that issue.

Ha we're on the same boat. I actually bought the orb the other day and 5 minutes later, I cancelled it because I thought about the case (I also have the Ballistics Case).
Although today I tried to beam with my N7 and it worked, the N7 have the Asus case that Google sells and both N4 and N7 had the case on. So it might still work even with the case on, I'm trying to see if anyone in town (Vegas) bought it so I can try it before buying it again lol.

I'm not sure if the Qi charger works through your case but keep in mind Qi/wireless induction coil has nothing to do with the technology behind beam So you wouldn't know if one would work just based on the fact that the other technology did work.

I do not have that case but this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38033518&postcount=1013 says it does. The orb does not "hold" the phone. It uses mostly friction and possibly some magnetism.

Case that can be quickly/easily removed?

I'm want to buy this: http://www.proclipusa.com/phone-hol...for-hard-wired-installation-513526-19356.cmsv
I had one for my S2, and I was able to wire it into my fusebox, but on my S2 the case I had came off/on in a matter of seconds. It was an extra step but very much worth having a mount like this in my car. Unfortunately, I bought the same type/brand of case for my S4 and it doesn't come off as easy so I haven't bought this mount yet (snug fit). They have an adjustable mount but it doesn't have the cable built into it.
If I have to, I can deal with plugging it in instead, but if anyone knows of a case that I can take off easily that would be great.
I'd like that too but would mean having the device bare and not sure if I could do that.
The only phones I've used bare are blackberry's where they have a slip case.... But even then it was a pain removing the phone from the case every time I got into the car.
They do a holder that suits a device with a skin too.... Would that not be better?

The big plus from not needing a charge cable is the clutter of having a cable danging around in the car, plus, that's one less USB port available for the passenger and/or other devices.
I have the s3 variant installed in my car. I have gotten used to not having a case on my phone. I have had my S3 for over a year and there are minor scratches on the battery cover and none on the screen. Thanks for posting the link, I just ordered my S4 and I have to find a replacement holster from proclipusa. On a side note I only use the proclip holster to charge my phone when I am in my car. I never charge my phone at night. I always have 70% or better battery life.
I forget the company but someone makes a split case that pops together so you could remove the bottom section without having to take the entire case off.
This is what you need: http://www.seidioonline.com/samsung-galaxy-s4-surface-case-black-p/csr3ssgs4-bk.htm I use it for all my docks and it is excellent.

Any problem with overheating and watertight case?

I got a watertight case but now just realized that our phone does get heated up a fair amount esp with playing video and accessing internet. Now i am afraid of using my watertight case for fear of the phone overheating (which would also be real detrimental to the life of the lith battery). What's everyone take on this? thnx
Bump... so no one has not even a remote concern about the phone heating up inside a case at all with heavy usage?

They get fairly warm yes but the case will absorb some of the heat like a heatsink. The phone doesnt have a fan or anything so its not like your cutting off a fans circulation. I use to use a trident case with a built in screen protector its not the same thing, but its similar. Never worried about the heat.
Hit thanks if I helped you out. Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way. Sent via tapatalk.
cool. thanx
So i finally encased my S4 in the watertight case today. This is the one I got:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/16111403990...:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_17039wt_1090
It is indeed a watertight case supposedly water resistent to 6 ft for 30 min. I can believe that as this was submerged for 3 hr under 1 ft of water with no leak by me. However as I figure the temperature reading has gone up during usage.
Using weather station, the temperature reading using the phone was around 85 F . In the case, the temperature reading was 92 F after about 4 min of video playing. I wonder what it would be after about 1 hr of GPS use outside? about 97 F.
I got to wonder how this will affect battery lifespan. I mean there's nothing else beside the batt that will be affected also is there? I;ve heard that AMOLED may be also susceptible possibly?
I guess if the case were made of metal instead of hard rubber, that might conduct heat away better? Anyone knows of a good watertight metal back case or even just a splash resistant one?

Idk if its possible, but I noticed the warm to hot feeling on my phone. I'm still new to the phone and its been almost a week. I noticed it doesn't get jotbanymore after switching the stock battery to the 2800 ravpower battery. I'm thinking about getting the zerolemom 3000, cause I like the size just trying to extend the battery as much as I can. So yeah after switching batteries it doesn't get hot as quick anymore, matter of fact its been cool after using my phone for awhile. That's my .02

Here're some pics. Yes it does look like a lifeproof knockoff. Not bad though for $14. It also come with a screw type headphone extension that goes into the headphone port after you unscrew the port cover as i shown. Opening the bottom flap allows for plugin of microusb cable, though the opening is not very big. The default samsung usb port is a complete perfect fit into the port opening with no room to spare. forget about mhl output. I could get a micro usb male female extension cable with a small head so i can use my OTG cable but this usb extension cable wont work for mhl....
Obex case looks good. should look good for a case costing $80. does the bottom port opening fairly big that you can plug in mhl out? i see it's like also plastic so i m not sure if it dissipates heat anymore than what i have....
Thank you! That is wild it looks so much like my hubby's official black lifeproof case for the 4s.
How's the screen and button sensitivity for you? Might have to try one. We had an unexpected bill come up and had to table the official $80 lifeproof this month.

The screen plastic transparent cover sits a few mm above and not directly touching the phone screen so the multitouch is a little less smooth as you have to apply a little more pressure. Also need a little more pressure on side buttons (which could have positive effect of less accidental turning on)... also the case does not seem to have much silicon or shock absorbing rubber around so it prob transmit more force to yr s4. But it is watertight... which as I said does raise the temperature of the device a little...

I think the official lifeproof case for iPhones is plastic as well if I judge the dents and marks in my iphone5 case correctly. It's definitely not like the Otterbox Defender where you have silicone absorbing the case, but whatever design lifeproof came up with takes drops like a champ so I would expect the knockoff to be similar if it's watertight like you said.

So you ordered the same cheap knockoff from ebay for $14? I still think $14 maybe a little too much for a knockoff esp because it doesn't seem to have too much softer rubber or silicone around. But at least it's water resistant. I had a quick look at my friends real iphone lifeproof and i can tell the difference but hopefully you can give us a more detail comparison once you got it. Hope you didn't buy this from some asian sellers as it could be a while before it arrives in U.S. I couldve maybe got it a few bucks cheaper from asian sellers but i fig it's worth it to pay extra 3 or 4$ to get it in a few days vs at least a few wks going with a US seller.

I just posted a msg in the lifeproof thread requesting user experience with the size of bottom port opening. Its kinda irritating now that my usb otg cable connector won't fit through the opening on the knockoff. Same goes for many other microusb cable i have. forget the MHL adaptor....
There are only two cables i have with smaill enough connectors: 1. the default sammy usb cable came with the phone. It's a complete snug fit around the connector... 2. an old motorola micro to mini Usb adaptor which has an even slighly smaller microusb connector compared to the default sammy cable...
Arrhhh... kinda sucks. I might have to save up for the genuine lifeproof case if the port open on it can accommodate a lot more cables..... If i do get it prob get the fre ver. I don't trust the nuud ver with exposed screen as much..
Got it today and its not as bad as I was expecting. Missing the rubbery front part the real fre has, the power button is harder to press (though volume up and down are fine) and screen is like my ipad Otterbox defender. Hoping the screen grows more flush but it will still be a good case till I can get the official one.

Could do worse w $14. Only other major problem I hv is that the bottom port opening is a little small. Snug fit for the default Samsung cable but too small for many larger microusb connectors or OTG usb cable or MHL connector... I think real lifeproof opening is only just little bigger
How's big is the opening for the bottom port? Are you able to use speaker phone with this case?

[Q] Anybody recommend a good wireless charger?

Need a wireless charger for my GS6, thanks.
I've had this PowerBot for a while and it works fine. Price varies a bit depending on the color your want. It may not be the fastest, but I'm OK with that as it does not get the phone too hot either.

I bought one of these based on comments on XDA, and bought two more after confirming that it is excellent. Each unit has 3 coils, so it reliably charges the phone in numerous different positions. It is grippy on both the top and bottom, so it snuggly holds the phone and stays securely on the table-top. It is small, but not too small -- the width is the same width of the phone and the length is about 75% of the phone's length. I always place my phone flush on the surface with the camera bump hanging off the top of the charger, and it charges beautifully. Finally, it causes no considerable heat and no whine or noise of any kind.
A couple things to note: (1) It does not come with a USB wall wart. It only has the charging pad and a micro-usb cable. (2) It does not work with Samsung's fast charging USB wall wart (not sure why). (3) There is a blue LED that lights up when it's activated, which might bother some people (I've covered mine with electrical tape).
What's wrong with the suggestions in the other threads?
@eyc, I'm using a metal bumper case, does it still work with the case on?
BTW, it looks just like what I want, simple and attractive.

I couldn't tell you because I haven't tried...and I don't have a metal case to test it. My wife has an S6 with a thin silicone case and, as you would expect, it works perfectly fine with that. I have an S6-edge, and I keep it bare. While I don't have personal experience with a metal bumper case, I can only speculate that this charger will work as good as the best in light of the 3 coil system. Good luck.

Someone else made a thread about this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/accessories/best-wireless-charger-galaxy-s6-t3101501
I personally have the official one from Samsung. Works fine and haven't had issues with it. Use it for both S6 and S3 (yeah, I still use it as my media player when I'm at home, so I'm not eating up battery on the S6)

It looks nice, what case are you using? I have a metal bumper case, do you have a metal case to test for me? Thanks, dude.:laugh::laugh:

Forgot the pic. Here it goes. It will flash blue light once you connect it to the power, and it will only flash one time to indicate that the power is on and no other led light at all, so it won't disturb you even put it in your bedroom, love it so much.

I'm glad you like it bud!

I have this one as well, I agree is is excellent, I had a spare HTC 2 Amp charger plug that works great with this wireless charger. This charger gives off very little heat and charges fine through my Otterbox case.

I tried the metal "Platinum" cases from BestBuy and none of my 4 Qi chargers could charge through it. The metal definitely seems to interfere.
EDIT: When you say "metal bumper", do you mean only the edge is metal, like the Spigen Hybrid Pro? If so then of course that metal would NOT interfere.

Yes, that's what I mean. I don't have a full metal case to test for you, sorry can't help you.
This charger works very good so far, It charges very fast even with a tpu case on.

I bought this one from ebay in the UK thinking it would be the same, but it has 4 bright blue LEDs that are lit constantly when in use. Returning it now.

What a pity, someone likes leds, it can indicate you while charging, but if you want to use it in bedroom, no light will be better. The charger I bought only
ship to us and Canada:crying:
You can choose the 3 coil based wireless charger by CHOETECH as I am using it from last 1 month without facing any problem. There is no need for alignment as the Galaxy S6 starts charging when it gets in contact with any of these 3 coils. I bought it from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JA7HNZO/
