antivirus apps

I currently have AVG free app running on my android. I find its scanning of everything downloaded to be rather annoying. Also I dont like it saying p"protected by AVG antivirus" on my lock screen. Is having an antivirus app really neccassary--I dont go crazy with downloading and dont surf random obscure websites. I haven't heard of too many people getting viruses if at all so are antivirus apps really nexxessary?

+ive never heard of phone viruses either but theyre a possibility(a small one but there nonetheless) my superstitions and the "wheres my phone" feature make me use lookout
to get a vius to android tho would be difficult because it doesnt use executable programs and before insyalling apks shows the permissions also, downloads are shown in notifications
but i kno keyloggers exist

I use lookout for the hell of it. I don't think a virus is an issue as much a malicious apps spills be. It is mostly non invasive and notifications can be turned off. My two cents.

I was using Norton mobile security.. now using kaspersky mobile security. It has more options (sim block, wipe, find phone blah blah)

you don't need an anti virus. just don't install 3rd party apps that came from unreliable sources.

Unlike windows where viruses can infect your computer from virtually Any email/pic/etc. Android cannot get viruses. however, malicious programs do exist. What makes them different is that the user has to install them. Therefore it is entirely in your control. Use some common sense and you will be fine.
For an antivirus to protect you, the malicious program has to have been previously identified and defined by the security program's staff. By which time It's likely been removed from the market. And if it catches it then likely It's too late anyway.
In other words, having an AntiVirus is basically a redundant security feature that a) wastes space and CPU cycles, and b) only gives a false sense of security.

I stick with lookout, AVG always gives a ton of false positives.

i agree with you mate...specially who had root phone and ability of superuser, it benefit for the their own sake (developer) ..not urs

Didn't want to start a new thread so I'll add to this one....
If you use antivirus apps which one do you use? I found two that seem pretty good. The first one is lightweight but unsure of how good the detection is, also infrequent database updates. The second one is well known in Korea, better interface and has frequent database updates but has a larger footprint.

I use Lookout since I don't see any downside as it doesn't hog battery/memory and is just not annoying. I don't know if it's likely that I could get a virus - but since there isn't really any downside for me using Lookout, I use it.

I'm using F-secure 1 year free license with Optimus 2x

I am thinking about starting to use some kind of AntiVirus, but I want to ask if there is visible lazyness of system while using antivirus.
I have HTC DHD.

Not that I've ever noticed. The only time you even know it is there is when you're installing an app and it gives you a notification that it is scanning and then the results. It doesn't cause any slowdown or anything. (This is Lookout I'm talking about, idk about any others.)

Personally I just run Lookout as well. Hasnt caught anything yet, but hope that just means I haven't been bad in my file and app choices.

Lookout mobile security

I'm wondering, should I keep it? It seems useful but then again, android back ups contacts via gmail. Are the other features worth it? Or is there a better alternative?
Should I just delete it then?

It's more of a personal opinion than fact. To me, anything that can help you find a lost/stolen device is worth while. There are other apps that will do that too, though, so you just need to find the one that you prefer.

Can you recommend other alternatives? I kinda like lookout, but I feel like having an anti-virus/malware program on a phone is kinda pointless.

HTC Sense/HUB has an excellent stolen phone locator/alarm, i prefer it over lookout, but since im not S-OFF/rooted, i cant uninsatll it :/
EDIT: Lookout is a great idea cuz each day there is more and more malware going to the market, but its just like norton, if the database isnt updated, the new threats arent detected plus its a bit of a resource hog

But half the time Htc hub doesn't work or you can't log in. lookout as been fine for me

Been using wavesecure for over a year now, and it has worked without any issues. wavesecure have now been aquired by mcafee, and the latest version also includes maleware scanning, and other useful tools. Fully customisable so the features you dont need can be turned off.

maybe I'm just tripping but I could have sworn my phone slowed a bit after signing up/turning on Lookout.
after getting rid of it(factory restore), my phone seems faster.
I now scan all the files going into my phone with my computer before hand. works for me.
oh and if you have insurance it comes with fine/wipe/alarm feature.

Does Lookout drain the battery life?

I personally uninstalled lookout, it doesn't update that much, and it uses to much RAM. I am using Dr.web now.

Zoner Antivirus
I use Zoner antivirus. Has loads of features and it's free. The comment about 'do we need antivirus software on our phones' made me laugh though! Android is just as vulnerable as Windows... and as it's more popular than any other mobile OS, it's guaranteed to be targeted by cyber-crims
It all comes down to the individual though. No one can say which is best, just like ROM's - there's some you like and some you don't.

What is the best app out there to lock, clean and/or find your phone? The best one on the market looks to be "Lookout Mobile Security". Any ideas?

Lookout is what I run, its pretty nice and it works. I have the free version but there is a paid one, I believe it has one or 2 more feature. The free one with give you app scanning, lost or stolen phone location (tested and works) and a quite nice feature of sending a siren noice to your phone if you happen to misplace your phone while on vibrate.

I've got SeekDroid on my phone.

Phonelocator pro. Everything it's done by text command, nothing running in the background. Battery life has no affect unlike others. Also if your rooted copy the apk to your system and u could auto enable GPS.

i love lookout mobile security. you can track your phone on their website. and you can make it "scream" if you cant find it, even if its on silent. it also has an "antivirus" which im not sold on (its linux, its not a window "virus"). it has more advanced features too if you pay for them.

I'm using SeekDroid. I was using Lookout before but felt like it was using up my battery life.

Actually its not really antivirus, just similar to anti-malware, like rouge apps

Phone locator pro is the best out there. It even turns gps on if you have it off

well it's a three way tie between Lookout, Seekdroid and Phone Locator.

I run Lookout as it does a pretty good job of anti-malware, keeps a running backup online so you can restore from a specified date, live tracks your device, "screams" the device to help you find it, and gives you the ability to remotely wipe it from their site.

Don't just look in your device threads for what would be a universal android app. You will have better results and more options. I can't give thoughts on any of them though as I don't use them, never lost a $600 dollar anything.

I don't know what's better the name or the app itself. That is a great idea from Lookout.

We do not which one is better for android has huge various devices.
And no app can cover all of them.
We have try this app with Galaxy S3/S4/Nexus 5, maybe you can download and have a try...

In your own opinion, What do you believe to be the best android phone locator? in other words if you understand, best application that can provide you with options to find your phone if it is lost or has been stolen. like GPS, Alarm and other features

I haven't tried Cerberus, but I know Lookout (free) can locate your phone if missing. It even turns the GPS on for you if it happens to be off.

I just started using Cerberus and it's working out very well.

Actually, they wouldn't be able to. One of the features of Lookout Premium is that you can remotely lock your phone

Cerebus will install itself into the ROM if you are rooted so even doing a factory reset won't get rid of it. One could flash a new ROM I suppose, but I can't imagine most people will know how to do that or even that they need to. I normally install Cerebus and then uninstall it so no one can find it.

Won't work with Go SMS Pro installed

I use Cerberus. If you have root, you can install itself within the ROM and protect it from a factory reset.
Another "fail safe" method I use is via Tasker - upon receiving a SMS from a certain number, with a certain phrase, it will send you the coordinates of the phone. (or whatever else you want, etc)

While I know the android os is much more secure than say...the windows environment when it comes to virii and the like...I'm curious as to what anti-theft, antivirus, antimalware (whether be separate apps for each..or all in one) people use? I've heard mention of (and often seen by default installed) lookout antivirus; have heard many a mention of avast (and have used that in the past) but also lately have heard of cerebrus anti theft? My main concern IS with anti theft so which would be the publics opinion on the best of that? Knowing the gs3 is a rather popular phone I'd rather prevent it from getting stolen. So....any recommendations preferably based upon first hand experience?

Cerberus is what I use for anti theft. It works great and doesn't run unless you send a awake up call so it doesn't eat up your battery. It does cost a few bucks but you can run up to 5 devices for that price. Also if your rooted you can move it to your system partition so it can't be uninstalled.

Never use anti theft. Phone never leaves my pocket or hand. The only antivirus I use is Mobile Care. Scan it once every few days and that's it. Still haven't ever had a virus or malware.

I use DroidWall for my firewall. Works well and easy to use.

AVG. Has antivirus, antitheft services, app backup, data monitoring (in the pulldown menu), and tons of other awesome features. Some are premium, but the antitheft is free (I believe the app backup feature is premium, but I've never used it). I haven't had a chance to use the antitheft features yet (thankfully), but AVG has been around for a while and I trust them.

I personally use Tasker and have a few profiles set up to lock up my phone and send me its location if anything happens. I also have a Tasker profile so if my phone is on silent and I lose it I can have it play a song haha. I don't see any need for anti-virus and I already payed for Tasker so I didn't see any need to get another security program.

I have never heard of Cerberus. I will give it a try.

None at all. I keep my phone on me at all times and I watch I do on my phone.

I had been using Lookout for a couple of years, but I realized it was just wasting battery and space since it seems pretty hard to get a virus on an android device. Lately I've just been using Cerberus since I'm afraid of loosing my phone.

I've used Lookout and AVG...but currently I am not using anything. Lookout is cool for the location controls..

Android lost is the ish for recovering a stolen device. You don't even need it installed at the time of loss

+1 for Avast - like the rooted option to rename the file under a different name, so it's difficult to find and uninstall in event of a theft/loss. Have it installed on my PCs as well.

I use cerberus installed as a system app on both my phones. I definitely would highly recommend it.
