The problem is that whatever I do, I can not return my phone niether to stock Android 4.0.4 ICS with the RUU, or to stock Android 2.3.6 GB...

You have to relock your bootloader before you can run an Ruu, adb oem lock if memory serves

There are 3 downgrade guides in the INDEX
I say "downgrade", because using the ICS RUU is not actually returning to Stock. It is a developer preview and you will probably get not the best experience with it. But if you want to use it the only action you have to perform is locking the bootloader as jugg1es stated above.
But if you really want to return to Stock (for example the latest GB revision) you should follow one of the downgrade guides. Just spare some time to read them and figure the required steps for your particular case

Just wondering if anyone had managed to debrand a Desire S.
Have made a goldcard and ran the RRU however I get a bootloader error.
Not really interested in rooting or installing custom ROMs just want rid of the Vodafone crappy.

Waht kind of crap?
Bootanimation/splash is hard to remove.
To delete apps from Vodafon or apps from htc (amazonmp3, navi preinstalled) you have to root - after rooting they are "normal" apps to uninstall.
root:
1) s-off your phone (should have be done with your gaoldcard)
2) search for onclickroot here on xda

Hmm.. is your desire s s-off? If yes then just flash the original HTC ROM Ruu! Just look it up in this forum! For me it worked well! Even my T-Mobile splashscreen disappeared!

Out of curiosity what is your SKU and P/N on the box as i purchased an O2 desire s and it came with generic firmware and unlocked. Although i think i got lucky.

i got mine unlocked for free from o2...just go through their site and chat to an advisor..ask them you want your phone unlocked...worked for me

Just install the ics ruu off the hec dev website. That will remove the branding.
But unfortunately HTCDEV ICS for desire S has bugs... like link clicks on SMS and other stuff, from what i have read.
It is not possible just to install a WWE rru like "RUU_Saga_S_HTC_Europe_2.10.401.9_Radio_20.4801.30. 0822U_3822.10.08.04_M_release_234765_signed" with the a goldcard inserted on the phone? If what it is needed is just to unbrand the phone, without having root or other stuff... or is it need to Hboot S-OFF unlock from HTCDEV? please advise.

Edit: from fastboot i got CId = VODAPD18 which it means Vodafone Portugal. Is it possible to run above RRU + goldcard with no / little risk of bricking ?

Well s-on does mean security on and of course s-off 1s security offbso maybe with you putting s-on the phone is now locked? I don't know just a wild guess on my side
It's the new HTC HBOOT, it's part of their new unlocking the bootloader stuff. You should really read up on things before asking questions as it's covered already
and you should have some manors. searching for this message does not bring up and search results...

that wasnt meant at you mate..
solved it anyway...
done the s-off on the new hboot..
changed the cid back to threeuk (H3G__001)
flashed three uk ruu file
used the fastboot oem writesecureflag 3
i now have s-on with no *** LOCKED *** message
all this for a stupid power button failure!!
this phone has some serious design flaws
Where did you find the three UK rom i was looking for this myself but cant seem to find it.

take a look at htcdev.com
you have to create an account here, and then just follow the tutorial "Unlock bootloader"
this way you will S-off your phone officially!

unlocking bootloader from the htc dev will unlock the bootloader of the device..
but it wont be S-OFF'd.
a lot more has to be done to S-OFF the device.

Well it is very simple Imo... You need to get a gingerbread ruu and run it in windows nothing else... That should be enough

You need to double click on the RUU and follow what the program indicates

JuopunutBear to S-OFF. Flash GB RUU
All you have to do is run the RUU. Make sure your PC has the appropriate drivers for your device and HTC Sync. I had to restore a few times using the stock 1.73.401.4 RUU for my Sensation XE, and that is all that I had installed. I can verify that root is not needed in my experience although I did have S-Off.

Don't need HTC Sync installed. Just need the drivers. Not sure if RUU comes with said drivers. Need to be S-OFF to downgrade hboot. ICS hboot is NOT compatible with GB (1.23 is, but that's not what's included with the latest RUUs).
Without S-OFF, you CANNOT RUU back to GB.
If it were so simple as flashing GB RUU, we wouldn't need JuopunutBear
downgrade is very complicated.
root the current ICS and install recovery

Guys i am not sure if my problem exactly releated whiti this thread but here is the thing
i am living in turkey and i bought an htc sensation also made it s-off and root while using ics roms i got a little dust problem on screen just 5 months passed since i bought the phone so i want to make it s-on back there is a thread about making s-on i fallowed the steps just i have problem whit ruu part which is in turkish forums there is a ruu for turkey vodafone users starting whit 1.45.... when i tried to flash it show me i am trying flash i mage version 2.08.401.1 to 1.45.468.2 after that it gives 155 code error
at the moment my hboot version is 1.17 using elegancia 2.3.5 v.1.5 rom already did supercid ofc short version of the long
whats should i do to get my phone s-on back whic ruu will work for me or what can i do making 1.45 ruu working for my phone pelase help me

I did the same as you! I'm in the UK, got an unlocked ChaCha off Amazon. I used the HTC Dev bootloader unlock to be able to install ROMs; sherrymalhi's link will guide you through it but HTC's site has good instructions too. It's really quite simple

I had the old HBOOT too but HTC Dev's process gave me an updater, didn't they do that for you?
unfortunately its the opposite
you know when i updated my software OTA (over the air) it changed my hboot 1.10.0000 to 1.13.0000... and they dont have the new ruu for my 1.54.401.3(new software). instead they have the old one (1.54.401.2) and its not compatible with my hboot....
U can check it on the website they still have the old one there...
i've even mailed them yesterday and they said they are looking into it but its not gonna be online for a while.
