Okay, so I will explain the situation. I used to own a iPhone 4, but now I own a Samsung Galaxy S GT-I90000M. The problem was that it was locked to Bell and my provider is Rogers. So I decided to root my phone and unlock it. I spent about 6-8 hours trying to figure that out. Eventually I found out it needed drivers to be recognized and then I successfully rooted the thing, then I followed the instructions to unlock it. now when I type in the *#SIMLOCK#* code it tells me all the locks are off. cool. Then I put my sim card in there. Perfect I can call and text. But no 3g, plus now I can't update on Kies because it won't recognize my phone because it's rooted. So I tried to unroot with the "One-Click" to no avail It says E:// signature is invalid or something rather. I wanted to unroot so I could get on to kies and update my phone and hopefully restore my phones 3g and have the latest android version or OS or whatever you want to call it on my phone. If You could help me it would be soooo fricken appreciated.
I don't know what model that is by heart, but I would look in your device's forum or on Google for the latest stock ROM and flash it - or choose a custom one. You'll need a custom recovery if you don't have one.
Root alone shouldn't matter when getting updates, though. You should still get them, you just might lose root if you use it.
I'm thinking the problem might be that the phone you have and the carrier you are on are using different bands - meaning that it can't access the 3/4g or whatever. I have no idea of you can fix that - but it seems you usually can't, so it might end up being best to sell that phone and get a compatible one if that's the problem.

Have you checked to see if your apn settings are correct for rogers? It could be as simple as that.
Edit: here, I googled up the rogers apn settings for you. Wouldnt you know it, someone posted them on these forums
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1187611
To put them in, go to settings, wireless and networks, mobile network, access point names, press menu button and choose new apn.
Good luck.

To begin with, I odin'd back to stock. After installing my apps, I rooted and backed up. I installed miui rom, but after running it for a few minutes, I totally lost service with vzw. I thought it might have been something I did, so I restored from my backup back to factory default. Still nothing.
So I went ahead and odin'd back to stock unrooted again. But somehow I still have no service. I can connect via wifi, but get nothing otherwise. Any idea's what I have done and how to fix it?

You changed your CDMA phone to GSM which is what is supported by MUI. Now it is up to you to get your device back to CDMA/LTE. We have no clue how to fix it.
I was afraid of that when I saw those networks come up. I'll keep searching for how to switch back.

Hello guys,
After loosing my HTC ONE X on the street a week ago, I bought from some guy an almost brand new GALAXY S3 without knowing it is a VERIZON version.
I live in Israel so i had no idea what is the meaning of buying a device that will work only on Verizon network, we only have GSM here.
The guy i bought it from also had no idea what it means as his father bought it on the US and brought it here wishing to sell it as he had no use in it.
Without realizing the mistake I've made, I then made another one, Taking out the VERIZON SIM CARD and giving it back to the owner!
I thought to myself... well... that's his SIM CARD, not gonna be using that one...
Well, i got home to find out i'm in trouble with this deal I've made, i searched for a way to unlock it for GSM networks and i saw that here in XDA someone made it possible.
As i started working on it i had to download from Google play an application, when i was asked to pay for it i saw it's running on the old owners google account, so i decided i don't wanna pay with my credit while he might get the receipt for it and i figured i should do a Factory Data Reset for the phone and start from point zero the whole process.
Sadly i had no idea i'm doing another big mistake because when the phone finished the reset it asked for a VERIZON SIM CARD in order to run, well you know where that SIM Card is - back at the previous owner and i'm not even sure i will be able to track him down again.
I wish to get this device working without any traces of Verizon, maybe beside the name on the back panel of the device.
Now that the device won't even run without the SIM, what should i do ?
Thanks in advance,
Ohad.

Thanks but i was able to track down the previous owner and get the verizon sim card.
I found away to use it on GSM but still im very disappointed because im not sure there´s a real way to remove any trace for the verizon stuff installed here and there are few errors like it is connected to the provider but it says no verizon sim card connected.
and im not so sure all the device's frequencies are "open" for my provider.
I was wondering if there's any option to burn an international galaxy version to the device and it will bypass all of these issues.

Not sure how to do so, but either way i'm not sure i will get the device working completely normally with my local SIM card on a gsm network, without bugs, without asking me to put a verizon sim card all the time, without having any option to update the device...
I dunno, i thought i could easily get this Galaxy version to become unlocked completely and get it running like all the other guys around...
Unless anybody here have a good recommendation about what should i do to overcome the verizon and networks issues, maybe i should just sell this guy on ebay and get a normal version...
Do you think this would be a smart move to do ?
Beemer - after you flash the CM10, do you still need to unlock the device and do you still get issues running on other than Verizon providers or do you enjoy a device that is similar to the worldwide versions ?
Thanks,
Ohad.
If you flash an international ROM on a Verizon S3, your phone will no longer power on or do anything useful. That's why it will become a paperweight. Flashing an international ROM on your Verizon S3 is one of the easiest ways to make it useless.
International=quad-core us=s4 processor, very different guts.I'd listen to the ppl on this forum, unless you want to end up with a paper weight.

Know it works on Touchwiz roms. It may not be in AOSP based roms.
Well, i flashed CM10 successfully, i was able to receive and send SMS before with the Stock ROM, and also to make/receive phone calls but i had sim card issues and errors and also some unwanted Verizon apps and stuff.
After updating the device to the latest Verizon version, i couldn't make phone calls, just receive and i could send and receive SMS.
Now that device runs much faster on the CM10 and i can make/receive phone calls but i can't send SMS.
*UPDATE: I have updated to the latest CM10 version, now i can't connect to the provider at all... no internet/phone/sms at all.
SOS
Ok, Im going to try a different tactic, i saw some people tried flashing At&t Roms on their verizon devices and they done it with success.
So far i tried doing it twice, one time with CM10 ROM for at&t, the 2nd time with stock at&t ROM.
I've tried doing it through CWM.
Both times i got an error while installing... it just didn't move on.
Luckly i had the CM10 for the verizon Zip file over there aswell so i installed that ROM again just to get the device running.
Any ideas how to flash the AT&T ROM on the Verizon Device ???
recently i updated my Verizon sgs3 that i bought from eBay to jb 4.2.1. i received msgs and calls and, i can call without problem as well but i cant send msg.... as i realize of what i was reading when install the phone info you can choose the global network that it can work woth gsm network, the thing is after updated phone info has no choice of global... any solution please , or at least how to make my telephone works fine in my country since i made this mistake and i bought it without out know anything about Verizon etc ?

If you're on 4.1.1 on Verizon (I wasn't aware 4.2 existed for us yet) there should be an option to manually change to "Global" under:
Settings/More Settings
/Mobile Networks
I'm also fairly certain you need to alter your APN's to match that of your carrier. I have no experience with this but there is a guide in the dev section covering this entire subject. Maybe it will help?

I have a Verizon Galaxy S3 (SCH-I535) running Android 4.1.1. I was told by Verizon prior to moving to England that, with this version of Android which unlocked the "world phone" capabilities (GSM), that I would be able to use my phone abroad with a new sim on a local network.
Fast forward a few weeks, and I am in England with an Orange sim in my phone. I have no problems with voice, but I cannot access any data services (I have no trouble receiving texts, but cannot send them - I think this is a problem with the sim though). After searching around the internet for a while, it seems that the solution to my problem would be to add the Orange APN settings to my phone.
HOWEVER, Verizon's version of 4.1.1 does not allow you to edit APN settings! When you go to the APN menu, there is nothing displayed and the only settings option is to Reset to Default.
The closest thing I've found to a solution is here, but it's a bit out of date as the method isn't for 4.1.1. I'm a bit wary of rooting my phone and installing a rom, as I've never done anything like that before.
Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing that might be able to offer a solution? I would be willing to root my phone if necessary, but I'd need to be directed to a pretty explicit noob guide for doing that :silly:
Thanks!
Getting root is easy with the toolkit linked. Should you have any questions you can read the thread or search galaxy s3 toolkit on YouTube. Just keep in mind some videos are outdated and that you have a Verizon cdma galaxy S3 running 4.1.1.

No solution yet. I'm going to look at the link above when I can get some time to sit down and focus on it. Hopefully it fixes it.
BTW, although it's billed as a CDMA phone, it is able to operate on GSM as well. That's the whole "world phone" thing that Verizon has been talking about.

I understand it's a world phone, but I wanted to drop that in because I wasn't sure if the Toolkit states "CDMA" under the device selection screen. I know the Galaxy Nexus or Razr Toolkit specifically stated CDMA. I just didn't want you to accidentally pick the wrong one. After looking at screen shots of the Toolkit you shouldn't have a problem it doesn't mention CDMA only Verizon is stated.

Spiting Verizon is my new favorite hobby.
I have a very similar problem. I have a Samsung S3, not rooted, but unlocked from Verizon. I have been in Kandahar for a month or so. My SGS3 with a local provider will make and receive calls great when coverage is there. My problem is, I can only seem to text local here not back to the US, or get email and no Google Talk. I went to the shop where I got my card here, they told me that Verizon needed to unlock my phone. I know it is unlocked but I made the call home, Verizon told me what I already knew. I went back into the store, once again, next they said Verizon needed to unlock my APN? I called again, finally I got a response from Verizon saying that Samsung needs to release the patch so Verizon can unlock it. If anyone knows of such a APN patch I would greatly appreciate it. My lap top screen got cracked during a patrol so doing all of this and email is quite the B!tch! I have always had success with this forum and hope it will continue. Once I send my lap top back home to be warrantied, I will not have any way of getting the usual business done for at least a month. I'm trying to hold off on the lap top until I can get my phone fully functional. I do not have internet connection on my phone, just my computer, I guess that is the APN, that is still locked. I could do all of this if I had WiFi, but it is not allowed here by the company that provides internet. They do have WiFi in some areas, but it is always bogged down with everyone else trying to use it. Also, I am not too sure if I want to attempt to do a root, the internet service here is very slow. Thanks for your help. Please remember, I am atleast 8 1/2 hours ahead of you, so response time will be delayed.

Hello.
First of all. I have no experience in rooting. I am reading, and learning, and troubleshooting and this is where I am at.
SCH-I535
4.1.2 Build JZ054K.I535VRBNB1
Bought an unlocked verizon phone from craigslist to use on tmobile. Took it to store and got the micro sim. Text and voice only. No data working. No ability to add APN via menu. They look up the build and say it has been rooted. So I figure I can learn how to edit or add the APN myself.
I find this thread that says a fix may be to edit build.prop to get access to add APN but it fails to save the prop file.
forums.androidcentral DOT com/verizon-galaxy-note-2-rooting-roms-hacks/241691-mod-add-apn-editor-system-settings.html
Then i try this but Titatanium Backup Pro can "not acquire root access. "
forum.gsmhosting DOT com/vbb/archive/t-1563675.html
I run Root Checker Basic and it says "does not have proper root access".
So, I am confused. Was tmobile incorrect and my phone is NOT rooted? Or is it rooted improperly? Or do I need to learn how to do it myself in order to use this phone on tmobile with data?
any help appreciated. I guess this thread might be "is my phone rooted or not". I gonna search some more. I think it might not be.
Thanks.
You're not rooted. Here's another way to check, look for "su" file in System/bin file path. If it's not there then you're not rooted.

Correct on both accounts. You should be fine with texts/calls on GSM/Global networks.
I think you may have misinterpreted what "unlocked" meant in this case though. Sounds like you purchased a dev edition GSIII which comes with an unlocked bootloader. That's entirely different than it being sim unlocked for GSM networks. Once you root, look for a thread in the dev section titled " Fully working Verizon S3 on T-Mobile" and you'll find what you need. You'll only get edge speeds.
Edit: To get working GSM data you need to edit APN's which you can only do if rooted.

OK. I think I get what you are saying.
So, in order to get full 4G tmobile data, i need to root the phone so I can edit the APN's.
OR are you saying only edge speeds no matter what I do (and is that due to other issues like phone frequencies)?
Otherwise, I have a basic stock verizon network phone with the latest JB 4.1.2
or non-verizon wifi only device that can be hot swapped to voice/text on any GSM network worldwide, but no mobile data unless rooted.
do I have that correct?

As of today, you'll only see T-Mobile's Edge speeds once you root and edit the APN's. Yes it's due to T-Mobile's frequencies and the fact that the phone was programmed for Verizon. If you travel overseas you might see 2g or HSPA depending on the frequencies of the carrier you're roaming on but that's hard to pinpoint.
So, currently yes you have either a Wi-Fi only device or a GSM/Global capable device that can text/call WITHOUT rooting.

gotcha. and a bummer. not sure it's worth it to root for those speeds. and I don't really travel overseas anyway. I guess I need to figure out how to trade for a t-mobile phone. or resell it on craigslist and start over.
