[Q] Soft-Bricked - usual solutions don't work - HTC One S

Sorry, for bothering you with this but unfortunately, I have soft-bricked my phone. It's a WIND Canada HTC One S with S4 cpu, CID is GLOBA001 with HBOOT 1.14.0004.
I had Cyanogenmod 10 installed, ran in some problems, tried to find a solution (among others this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1630459 didn't work) and bricked it: boot loop, unmountable /sdcard, no working recovery. I have tried for hours all the tips I found in the forums but none helped. I even downloaded a RUU but I couldn't install it (probably the wrong version).
Current state is: I can only get into the bootloader which is re-locked (by courtesy of one of my repair attempts). Connecting via USB to fastboot works. Nothing else, for all purposes the phone is clean, empty and oh so very much dead.
How do I proceed from here? In the end I want to have working version of Cyanogenmod back.
Thank you in advance, guys!

Okay, flashing TWRP worked. I then booted into recovery, clicked on "mount" and then "mount usb device". After some driver installs I can no see the internal storage. Apart from a folder for TWRP and .android_secure it's empty. Is this where I now put the Cyanogenmod file and install it via the recovery?

Ya place it where you want and then flash it but you will need to fastboot the boot.img file thats in the rom zip, you can use the All-In-One Toolkit to do that.

Copying the ROM and then installing via TWRP worked though I saw that TWRP displayed an error, saying it was unable to mount /cache. When I tried to wipe the Cache & Dalvik Cache I got the same error.
Nevertheless I then went ahead and copyed the boot.img (extracted that one from the Cyanogenmod zip) via fastboot and rebooted the device. Now the phone is stuck in the Cyanogenmod boot loop.

Hmm think you going to have flash the stock recovery then do a factory reset in the bootloader then go back to TWRP and copy over the rom again then factory reset in TWRP and then wipe system and then flash the rom. Do not lock the bootloader.

[Q] need help, noob flashed a kernel by accident.

Ok, this is my first time unlocking a device and it went well. I used Hasoon2000's kit to unlock and got twrp flashed and was going to get the Paranoid Android rom and Rohan's kernel all set to go. while getting it all set up, I was trying to figure out how to launch the command for the kernel but ran it instead. now my device is in a perpetual booting loop. Is there anything I can do or am I out of luck?

Wipe everything except sd card and flash a new ROM..
Typed from my HTC Explorer(Pico)

reboot into bootloader and "fastboot flash boot boot.img" the stock kernel from PA
How would I go about accessing the bootlaoder if it just keeps loading to the HTC boot screen then resetting itself?

So I am in the bootloader, now whenever I click recover it goes back into the loop. is it possible for me to flash the stock kernel to stabilize it?
that's what i said. extract the boot.img from the rom. boot.img = kernel and flash it using "fastboot flash boot boot.img"
my problem here is that i don't have PA flashed on it yet. Is there a way to fastboot the rom onto it from my pc? there isn't an option to do that from Hasoon2000's kit.
I got into twrp on my device. Do I need to mount the SD to put PA on my device to flash it?

Alright, just started the flash. hope everything goes well. thanks for your help so far.
PA is flashed, but now it won't load the rom. It starts the PA loading animation, then nothing it has been sitting there for about 30 mins.
I have the feeling that I may have soft bricked the phone. I have tried re-flashing PA and even tried CM10, both times clearing both caches. Is there anything else I can do to get past the boot animation?
Are you on hboot 1.14 (2.20 firmware)?
Did you flash the kernel before installing the rom?

yes to both, and I had just read about needing to flash the boot.img first. For my own clarification, the boot.img is the kernel correct? If so Hasoon2000's kit has a section to put the img in and just flash it on. When ever I choose factory reset from the bootloader, it takes me into twrp, by doing this has it already done the factory reset, or is there something else I need to do?
this is starting to feel like a trial by fire situation for me

You factory reset from bootloader? Can you access your SD card in TWRP?
Yes I can access the sdcard from twrp, and I have used the factory reset option a couple of times to access twrp when I was first having issues getting in from the recovery option.
update - I just tried flashing it again and It finally cleared the animation. I am setting it up now and thanks to everyone for their help.

Cannot Flash anything!

Alright, so, my tablet decided to one day just cease stop working. The recovery for some reason can't flash anything now, is used to be able to flash a backup, but not anymore. It used to be able to boot past the animation, but not anymore. I cannot flash a ROM from recovery because it says that the file is bad (and please, don't tell me to check to see if the md5's are correct, they are, I've triple checked.) I've flashed CWM recovery and TWRP recovery, and TWRP cannot fix permissions, but CWM recovery can, but neither can flash a single ROM. I've tried sideloading a rom but i get this error from the CMD window
Code:
* failed to write data 'protocol fault (no status)' *
. I'm at my wits end here. The bootloader is perfectly fine, it works 100% but I can't flash a single thing from recovery. I've flashed non-corrupted recoveries, and still I cannot flash a thing.
You have flashed the latest TWRP via fastboot and it still wont flash roms? Also, what bootloader are you on?

What tablet do you have?
From where did you download which recovery for which Asus tablet.
Sounds like the recovery version doesn't match the device.

Have you ever unlocked the bootloader? (If not: do so by searching on Asus' site for the Unlock Bootloader Tool v7) It's a simple apk which you install and then check and let it unlock.
Only then, you can start flashing!
If you already have unlocked, maybe you sent it in (?) Or flashed an official Asus rom (?), you might want to unlock it again.
Let us know if any of these answers above helped

If you have the 4 icons that indicates JB.
Sounds like the custom recovery is not installed if your on the RCK icon and press the up volume rocker and nothing happens.

Unlocking it would require an OS to be installed, but none is installed because I was wiping to install a different ROM. I have unlocked it. In response to the boot loader, yes, it has 4 icons. So I guess it is the JB boot loader. When I go to RCK it does boot recovery but from there on its unable to open any zips besides any backups I have. When I reload a backup it doesn't install the OS, but it restores everything else.

Can you get adb shell access to your recovery?
Which ZIP are you actually trying to flash? What is the exact error message from the recovery? Try running md5sum (inside the adb shell) on the file you want to flash. Check the output of "mount". Check if /cache/recovery/log contains interesting info.

Also, I noticed last night that when I was on fast boot, it would stay stuck as waiting for device on the cmd window. I'm not sure if it was my computer that didn't detect it or a new symptom. OK, I assumed that you're not using data2sd. 1. Make sure your microsdcard is good (reformat and recopy your backup or rom if needed),2. Boot into twrp and wipe cache, dalvik cache, factory reset, wipe system, wipe internal then finally the most important part, FORMAT SDCARD. Now reflash a new rom or try to restore from backup. I would try step#2 first. Good luck.
EDIT: format sdcard instead of wipe sdcard.

[Q] Screen stuck when try to reboot

Hi,
Im trying to root my HTC ONE S. I followed all the steps that suggested in the forums, but when I reboot the phone in the final step, it got stuck in the 'HTC quietly brilliant' screen. I left it there for 20 min or so, it didn't change. I am able to go to the recovery mode but I don't know what to do. I did a factory reset attempting to go back to the original software but it didn't work either. Any ideas what can I do? Im in real trouble if Im not able to use my phone anymore.
Thanks in advance,

Well if you are installing a custom ROM then there is no need to root before hand, you just need a custom recovery installed. The custom ROM will have root access enabled.
If you are asking how to just be rooted on a stock rom, then I would just google how to do it like you would. But I assume you install custom recovery, download a supersu.zip and install via recovery.

seems to be a common that the sdcard can become corrupted.
If that is the case, having the stock recovery on and then booting the phone into bootloader and selecting "clear storage" fixes the issue.
Then you need to flash custom recovery again, and mount usb storage.
For the S4 Ville version of this phone and not the S3 VilleC2

Hi,
I tried to do what you told me, but now I can´t even go into the recovery mode. That is good, that is the stock recovery, basically saying you don't have access to it.
But you don't need to go into recovery, it is there just to fix the issue when you enter the bootloader and pick "clear storage"
So get back to the bootloader and clear storage. Then you will need to flash the recovery of your choice, CWM or TWRP. You should now be able to access usb storage. (unless you are using the special TWRP in the Maximus thread meant for hboot 2.16, then it just doesn't work)

You are welcome.
You only need S-Off if the rom says 2.16 HBoot required.
So there are a lot of different ones to try. As long as your Hboot is 2.15, if not then you need to upgrade your firmware to that. You see your HBoot in the bootloader screen.
So ya, most of the roms are ok with S-on, you just have to remember to:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
So on your pc download the rom, unzip it you will see the boot.img move that to fastboot folder and fastboot flash it.
Then you can move the ROM.zip to your phone and install via recovery.
Don't forget to wipe caches before rebooting. (when installing, if that particular rom opens up Aroma installer and one of the options is to wipe, do that but don't wipe again when back to recovery)
The sense based roms are generally more stable and like stock.
The CyanogenMod may have a few little bugs.
Just browse around and see which one you like.
It all worked out pretty well.
I'm trying with the MagioRom, seems to be very stable!
Thank you for your help, you literally saved my HTC!

[Q] One S Stuck in bootloop after installing Viper 3.0.0

Hi Guys,
Yesterday I installed Viper One S 3.0.0 on my Phone.
Installation went ok. Used TWRP by the way.
After the message of succesful installation i rebooted the Phone.
Now it's stuck in a bootloop. I can get into recovery, but there I cannot do anything. It doesn't seem to see the Internal storage, so restoring the backup I made of the stock ROM is also not possible.
Anyone an idea how to get this ROM to work, or how I can get back to the Stock firmware? I kinda need this Phone.
And does anyone know if the SD card is wiped? Or just not visible?
Any help would be much appriciated.:good::good::good:

Hi,
I had the same problem, i had installed the viper rom twice (second time without wiping) and then it worked. I also had the 'no ds card found' error. This fixed it for me:
1) Use the All-in-One-Kit and flash your recovery back to stock
2) Boot into the bootloader and choose to "clear storage" and afterwards to reset to factory defaults.
3) Go back to the all-in-one-kit and flash a CWM recovery version again.
4) Reboot into recovery (CWM). Your /sdcard should now be mounted and visible.

Thanks for the update. I have the Toolkit, but which button is for the Stock Recovery?
Ok so I'm a bit further. I Flashed an Original Recovery I found in the thread of the Toolkit. That didn't boot.
But afterwards I flashed the TWRP again. Now I see the SD card again.
Only problem now is to send a ROM to the SD card for installation.
ADB is not working properly on my WIndows 7 X64 machine.
Anybody any ideas on that??

Hi Guys,
Got everything working again.
USB connected to my WIN8 machine after all, and i was able to copy the Viper 3.1.0 rom to the SD.
After 2 times installation (1 with TWRP Wipe, and then 1 with Wipe from Aroma installer) it worked.
1st install worked until I rebooted. Then bootloop again.
2nd time wipe from Aroma and all is working fine now.
Everybody thank you for helping. Much appriciated.:good::good::good::good::good:

Nice going! goed gedaan!
Just 1 little thing I found. Maybe someone knows how to fix it.
Every now and then the Phone just reboots. Then it works fine for a while. Is this a known issue?
Besides that I'm loving this ROM. It's fast, customizable it just works great!! Respect to the Developer!!

Can not reboot to recovery

I'm trying to flash an update to PAC Rom, but I can't get my phone to reboot to recovery (or even shut down).
When I use the power menu, no matter what I choose, the phone does a hot boot. When I hold power and volume down it will go to bootloader then I can access TWRP, but I can't clear dalvik or cache as it says that it can't mount the partitions. The ROM runs fine however and I can access all my data so the cache can't be corrupt.
What can I do here? Thanks to those who help!
Sounds like somethings wrong with your recovery. Get into the bootloader and reflash TWRP using "fastboot flash recovery FileNameOfTWRP.img"

Would using flashify work here?
It's been a recurring theme on the PAC forum

Yea that should work too, but if not, fastboot is the way to go.
EDIT : Very very strange. Flashing TWRP again via Flashify got it to work. It seems something in PAC Rom is corrupting the recovery. I think if I get this all worked out then I'm going to have to go back to DK until it's all worked out. I wish there was another ROMs with all the same features as these two but got updates (whereas DK doesn't any more) and is stable enough to DD (lots of FC with PAC).
EDIT 2: Just tried to reboot into recovery again. After booting teh ROM just for a few minutes the recovery was corrupted. I can't access internal memory from recovery any more, even if I get it to boot. It doesn't make any sense as the ROM has full access to it all.
To be clear, TWRP says Internal Storage - 0

Here could be the solution. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2513701
Flash the cache.img
if it wont work, will have to flash-all

That worked! Thank you!
I actually used to go around the Q&A forum telling people to do just that when they were having issues with wiping on early TWRP versions. Surprised I didn't think to try it. All back on DK now and hunting for a new ROM. :victory:

Sounds like you solved it, but I think you could've also done an adb reboot recovery command. Not sure if that works though since I usually only use fastboot.

After flashing teh recovery again, I could get INTO it, but the data was not showing up so I couldn't actually do anything from within TWRP. It read I had 0mb internal storage.
