Since people continue to only download part 1, even though I've explained fully that you MUST download BOTH parts before extracting, I have now added this at the beginning of the post, so hopefully people will actually follow the directions properly. DOWNLOAD BOTH PARTS BEFORE EXTRACTING, IT WILL NOT EXTRACT PROPERLY ONLY DOWNLOADING ONE PART!!!
This is a custom stock ROM for the Samsung Conquer 4G that has many advantages over a completely stock image. It was developed by me, Brien Johnson of XHPCreations aka brienj.
The link to the files for the ROM are at the very end of this post, but I recommend you read the FULL post while downloading the files.
- Your phone will be rooted.
- The complete FC17 update that shouldn't nag you to update to FE16. (may help to delete the FE16 update in the cache if you already had it pushed to your phone)
- Clockword Mod Recovery for making easy backups and restores.
- Completely Deodexed and ZipAligned for better performance or being able to hack further.
- All bloatware removed, i.e. SprintID
- Stock Launcher replaced by ADWLauncher. (the stock Launcher could not be deodexed, but ADWLauncher is much better and more robust)
- Debuggable.
- Custom power menu that includes, reboot, reboot into recovery, and reboot into download. (Currently the reboot into download does not work, will try to get it to work if possible in the future)
- Custom battery icons that show the actual percentage of battery power left.
- ICS Fonts for better appearance of text in phone's menus.
- Memory and network tweaks for best performance and battery savings.
- Support for running scripts on boot in init.d folder. I've included one script to help sdcard performance, feel free to add any more that you want.
- Support for standard bootanimation.zip files.
Along with these tweaks I will give instructions on improving the network performance further and changing the boot sound, as well as give links to useful programs and hacks that can be added on this phone.
I suggest only using this ROM if you have not successfully applied the FE16 OTA Update to your phone. If you have a stock FE16 phone, it MAY still work however. I can not guarantee this ROM will work for you, and I am not liable for any damage to your phone if you try to install this ...
Here are the instructions to install the custom stock ROM on a Samsung Conquer 4G with the FC17 update. It is installed in two parts, the first is if you do not already have Clockwork Mod Recovery installed, in which case follow the Odin instructions. If you have installed the CWMR already from my instructions here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1610534 then go ahead and follow the CWMR instructions.
Odin installation instructions (Use if you do not have CWMR already installed):
To enter Download Mode on the phone, make sure the phone is turned off and plugged into the wall charging. You should also make sure the phone has a good charge on it. Then turn the phone on by pressing the volume down and camera button and holding them while pressing the power button for a few seconds.
Unzip all the files on your computer and follow these steps.
1) Enter download mode on the phone and plug it into your computer.
2) Open up the Odin program in Windows, run as administrator if on a version of Windows that has such a feature, such as Windows 7. Sorry, there is no Odin for Linux based systems that I know about.
3) Press the OPS button and select the SPH-D600_FC17_CWM_XHP1.ops file.
4) Press the PDA button and select the SPH-D600_FC17_CWM_XHP1.tar.md5 file.
5) Press the Start button, the images should install and the phone reboot.
Congrats, your phone now has my Custom FC17 ROM with a CWM Recovery.
CWMR installation instructions (Use if you have CWMR installed):
Unzip all the files on your computer and follow these steps.
1) Copy the clockworkmod folder and merge it with the folder already on your SD Card. If you do not already have that folder on the SD Card, you may not have CWMR already installed, or you've never made a backup before with it.
2) Boot into CWMR by holding the volume down button and the power button while pugged into the wall charger, or by using the adb command "reboot recovery".
3) Select the menu item "backup and restore".
4) Select the menu item "restore".
5) Select the restore named "SPH-D600_FC17_CWM_XHP1".
6) Select the menu item "reboot now".
Congrats, your phone now has my Custom FC17 ROM with a CWM Recovery.
Now that the phone has the custom ROM, here are some things you can add or do to further improve performance on the phone if you wish.
First of all I recommend installing AdFree, Terminal Emulator, Titanium Backup, and if you wish ScriptManager, which can all be found on the Google Play Store. I can help you find them if needed.
For better 3G follow these steps (enter commands into Terminal Emulator or use the adb shell):
Type this command: getprop ril.MSL
It should show your MSL. Write it down.
Open the dialer and dial ##3282##
Enter your MSL
Click on "Others"
Click on "Multimedia"
Change the settings as follows:
RTSP Proxy Address: 0.0.0.0
RTSP Proxy Port: 0
HTTPPD Proxy Address: 0.0.0.0
HTTPPD Proxy Port: 0
The stock settings are:
RTSP Proxy Address: rtsp.vog.sprintpcs.com
RTSP Proxy Port: 554
HTTPPD Proxy Address: pd.vog.sprintpcs.com
HTTPPD Proxy Port: 8085
Here is how to change the boot sound:
First of all get the "poweron.snd" file from the /system/etc/ folder. It is a raw sound file which can be opened in any audio editor, such as Cool Edit Pro.
Here are the settings to select when opening it up in Cool Edit Pro for example:
Sampling Rate: 441000
Channels: Stereo
Resolution: 16-bit
Data Formatted As: 16-bit Intel PCM
Offset Input Data By: 0
Now you can listen to the boot sound in the audio editor. You can change it to your liking and save it in the same format. Remember to keep it a RAW audio file with the settings above. Replace the "poweron.snd" file with your edited audio file, retaining the same filename.
To replace the boot animation, you can find the "bootanimation.zip" file in the /system/media/ folder. Replace it with a bootanimation file of your liking. I've included a custom bootanimation that was modified to match the custom boot logo I made. I made all of it from a popular bootanimation of which I can not remember where I found it. I am not taking any credit for the original bootanimation, I just modified it to say Samsung Conquer 4G at the top and to speed up and spin faster at the end. If anyone remembers the original creator, I will add a link to it.
A great cpu tuning program that works on the phone (although won't save settings on boot for some reason), is this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1584508. From the screenshots below you can see that the phone will last almost 3 days without this program, although the other screenshot was using the program setting of PowerSave and after 20 1/2 hours it was still at 70%, but I also didn't use the phone, I just had it locked. However, when running in PowerSave mode, the phone will be very sluggish, so is only to use if you are just waiting for phone calls or just texting.
These are all the tweaks I have for now. I hope you enjoy the ROM.
I hate to bring this up, but if you like this ROM, please consider making a donation. I don't do this just for donations, I enjoy helping everyone out, but I was in a near fatal accident over two years ago and can no longer work. If you find yourself enjoying this ROM, please click on the Donate button under my name, I would really appreciate it. I can try to improve the ROM over time, but please remember that this ROM is strictly made for performance and battery life and to give you more control over your phone. I don't plan on doing any theming, and most people do ICS themes and such. Personally I hate the look of the ICS themes and the only thing I've taken from ICS, is the fonts, which I do like and look much better than the original. If you want some fancy theme, or mods like Beats Audio, I'd suggest looking for another ROM. If you want performance and longer battery life, I think you'll enjoy mine.

You must download BOTH of these files before you can extract them. After downloading them, put them both in the same folder, and open the part1.rar file up, and you can then extract the files properly. If you only download one of the two files, the files will be corrupted or not work:

It probably would. Perhaps it uses the flash_image binary to flash the images properly, but I don't know for sure. You'd have to make sure you give it the correct names of the mtd partitions though, or it would know the correct names for them, but that's if it uses the flash_image binary. You can always flash these yourself with the flash_image binary using the mtd table I listed. If you have CWMR though, I'd just do it that way.
It doesn't list our phone in the compatible phones, which leads me to believe it only knows the partition tables for the phones listed. Perhaps if you gave them our partition table, they could make it work though.

You're welcome. Hard work is an understatement though. When I had my accident, my head was split wide open from being struck. As a result, I have serious brain damage, although I have retained most of the smarts I had before the accident, which helps. However, it takes me months to do something like this, whereas before it would have taken maybe a week or two at the most, heck, probably a couple of days to be honest. I can not concentrate, I have to do one thing at a time, and I always forget things, even something that happened a few minutes ago. This is why I can not even work, as I can not be in a competitive work environment. Heck, even posting a post will take me close to 5 or 10 minutes, from fixing all the transposed letters, double-printing of letters, grammar, etc. The first post of the thread took me about 3 hours to finish and completely type up. It may appear from my posts, that I am smart, which I don't want to brag, but I believe I am, but because of my TBI, it's not what it appears to be, as you only see the final result after all my editing. I used to hide my problem, but I am not ashamed to admit it any more.
Thanks man this is really fast. I did a test and left my phone locked and it started out at 64 than 2 hours later it was 61!! Really good battery life.

Anyway, I tried downloading part 2 a few times, and every time I extract the files, it tells me the md5 file is broken. Anyone else having this issue?

You have to have part 1 and part 2 in the same folder, then open part1. It is a two part rar file, so uses both files. By opening just the second file, it won't all be there. But both files contain the whole package, you just need to open part 1, as long as you have part 2 as well.
I had to split the rar file up because Mediafire only allows me to upload a maximum filesize of 200MB, since I don't have a premium account. I've updated this info right before the download links.

I can run an intensive program with WiFi and the phone would still last close to 10 - 12 hours. That was the whole goal of my ROM, was for longer battery life, since it sucks when stock, and I think I succeeded at it.

Ok, thanks. I was just a little worried because part 1 extracted fine, and part 2 always gave me an error, giving me the part 2 md5 as a 0 byte file.
I've never rooted through android before, so I want to make sure I've got everything squared away before I begin.

Good to hear you are no longer ashamed, plus theres no reason to be. Especially since you can whip up great stuff like this. among other things youve done.
I havent flashed it yet, as I am backing up a lot of stuff, and trying to backup all the linux stuff I installed via opkg package manager using "BotBrew", which is getting a bit complicated. Plus I have to make a nand too beforehand.
So I should be able to get to it soon. Im excited.
But by the way, now that you have the Partitioning table layout mapped out, I wonder what we could do to further expand our internal memory/storage? I wonder if we could double partition our SD cards like some others do on other devices? They basically just format their SD with FAT32 in the first (which will be the extended internal), and the next being Ext4 for SD card storage. Seems like we should be able to do the same like anyone else, especially since you got that nice bit of info through your troubles, on the partitioning.
What do you think on this position?

I am "new" to doing all of this type of work. I used to strictly do game hacking/modding, not stuff to cheat, but to make the games better and more fun. Late last year I started getting into the Android systems and seeing what I could do. I'm sure if I looked into this stuff I could figure something out eventually, but not sure how long it would really take me. This seems like something that is similar between all phones, so maybe you should see what can be done already. If it's a phone specific thing, then one of us will have to do the dirty work. I just don't know.

I've had that happen before. Here is the solution, but I'd try recopying it to your sdcard another time to make sure it was copied correctly - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=714114
Also, are you sure you downloaded BOTH of the rar files as I said in the OP, and it did not give you any errors when extracting the files?
Also, try renaming the name of the folder to only include alphanumeric symbols.
I got an error when extracting the files too. I extracted both the files to the same folder so I don't know what the problem is and I extracted the first part first and the the second. I don't know what it is
I got it to work and the Rom on my phone. Looks good! Good job. I would like to add some themes if anyone has some or knows how I could do it myself.

Sure, if that's what you want. Like I said in my original post, this ROM was made to be practical, not to be fancy. It does have the ICS fonts in it, which look a bit nicer though.

Here is a new ever safer solution on how to root the "unrootable" Hero H2000+
WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO?
(Main Modification)
Well in this mod it will remove the android IOS theme or normal unrootable android firmware that comes with the stock phone, most will find out when you try and root the stock it only gives it a partial root ( no access to /system ) or just ends up screwing the camera if you finally do figure it out, i've combined about 10 different mods i've found around the web over the last 3 days of selective google keyword searching to combine it into this simple mod, i haven't done much myself except Modded the scatter installation to include CWM and i created the .zip file that removes the bloatware and adds SuperSu.
(optional Modifications)
- Swap sdcard with sdcard2 (fix application saving options for he external card
- Remove the 3 onscreen buttons and remap the Top side mute key into a back button for a better screen view and more authentic iphone style use.
Make sure you DOWNLOAD THIS first, It's the most vital part and has almost everything you will need, in one whole simple file, to achieve what i'm going to show you how to do, I'm going to try and include lots of detail so listen up, any sources & links from places i got most my information & downloads from will be included at the bottom of this page, if you are interested.
Warning! This is at your own risk,i am not responsible for any damage this may do to your device and always backup before ( Seriously don't complain about it to me, i never took any precautions when playing around and my device is fine but i'm sure there are risks of breaking your device.
Warning: Pretty sure this deletes anything on the phone's Internal SD / Phone storage and system storage, but the external SD card should be safe, but i'd still back it up incase but mine was left untouched, if not i'd of lost about 20GB of music so it's your call.
1. Download the file provided, you should have the following files:
- Folder: 2000+ SUPER ROOT SUROOT SYSTEM ACCESS
- Folder: PHONE DRIVERS MTK MT6577
- Folder: SP_Flash_Tool_v3.1220.01 VERSION 1
- Zip: MTK_Drive.zip
2. How to install the correct drivers are included in the MTK_Drive.zip + the MTK MT6577 driver folder, the drivers are for when the device is just started up with USB plugged in, for when it's in a flash mode, it will be detected as MTxx or something on the driver installation window, you don't have to worry too much about this until you start flashing and it will pop up the first time you attempt to flash with "installing drivers" message, the 2nd time it SHOULD flash but it took me about 30x when i first started, so yeah good luck with that.
3. COPY THE "COPY ME TO THE 2GIG INTERNAL SD NOT EXTERNAL.ZIP" to the internal sd card before or after the flash (BEFORE WOULD BE BEST) via USB on the phone when it's booted, if you're using the H2000+ phone it will be the storage with 2GBish.
4. OK lets begin, Open folder "SP_Flash_Tool_v3.1220.01 VERSION 1" right click on Flash Tool.exe run as Admin, Then click on "Scatter-loading", then in the browsing folder open "2000+ SUPER ROOT SUROOT SYSTEM ACCESS" and load the "MT6577_Android_scatter_emmc.txt" then click download, if any messages pop up just click yes or ok,
then on your phone PLUG IN THE USB hold the power off button CLICK RESTART and the tool should detect the phone and install the files on the 2nd - 3rd time +, You will know when you have achieved this by a BIG GREEN circular ok Message
5. Now you should have the rom installed with superuser root and CWM all included in one flash ( Your welcome ), turn on your phone holding the power button + the Volume Up button.
6. Click install zip from sdcard - choose zip from internal sdcard - COPY ME TO THE 2GIG INTERNAL SD NOT EXTERNAL.zip install and BOOM done (PART 6 ISNT ESSENTIAL BUT...) it removes a lot of Chinese bloatware crap from the phone, replaces superuser for SuperSU which i prefer myself, and installs a few apps i like to have. and you are done, information on what below.
QUICK INFO
once done i can't remember but i'm sure i removed all the crap, slow, process hogging, battery **** eating apps! So you WILL need to download like a browser, media player, etc...
My favorites for this phone are:

CHROME
EXPLORER (Free root explorer)
Titanium Backup (Good to delete system apps safely)
WEATHER & CLOCK accuweather (INCLUDES WIDGET SUPPORT)

Keyboard (swiftkey)
I SUGGEST remove the **** launcher (But first download this beautiful life saving launcher) once you install that use Titanium Backup to uninstall the old launcher and this will maximize your battery.
Followed up by THIS THEME makes it look nice and sexy

Iphone Notifications (Adds more authentic iphone notifications)

This guide is useful so your external sd card you have to physically put into the mobile your self will be able to be used as a storage for apps to be installed directly to, which is normally only possible if you use annoying apps like app2sd which are just a huge inconvenience.
ANYWAY right click this file and save it onto your phone or computer to copy to your phone http://www.cactuz.net/files/zp100/vold.fstab
once you load up your phone using a file manager with root permissions copy the file and replace it with the one installed onto the phone.
(SYSTEM/ETC/VOLD.FSTAB)
restart your phone and you're done!

Just added the VOLD.FSTAB into a .zip incase it's removed in future.

Remove 3 button virtual keys + use mute key as back (the key above the volume keys)
This will help you have a bigger screen view, more authentic iphone feel, and basically remove useless buttons.
Steps
1. First download ((THIS)) or the attached KEYREMAP.zip at the bottom of this post.
2. attach your phone via USB then copy the KEYREMAP.zip to your phones sdcard.
3. Unzip the file there you will get a folder called KEYREMAP, once you have done that inside that folder there will be 2 more folders
- MODDED (COPY AND PASTE THE SYSTEM TO SYSTEM)
- ORIGINAL (COPY AND PASTE THE SYSTEM TO SYSTEM)
-Disconnect your phone now.
4. Using an explorer (explorer or rootexplorer on your phone) go to the folder MODDED (COPY AND PASTE THE SYSTEM TO SYSTEM) then copy the folder "system" to the folder "system" at the main (ROOT) directory of your phone and replace the already exisiting files.
5. restart your phone and you are done
edit: Changed modded keymap due to system drop down menu button disappearing, fixed so now you can have a drop down menu button and still remove the 3 virtual buttons at the bottom

It's not that bad, i added some more mods i think i'm done now, got everything i wanted to do to my phone, hope this guide helps people and me incase i forget or lose these mods in future, which is the main reason i did it :')

Finally i Rooted
Hello my friends.
After one month on trying at my free time finaly today i rooted my H2000+.
I did not lost anything from my contacts or programs that i had before. My Wifi,Camera - front and back,Bluetooth are working fine.
The only think that hapens different today, was that when i did load the Scatter file in flash tool then his screen filled with lines of files that it going to use. All the other times that i was trying to falsh my phone there was only the line with the Scatter file. I do not know why but all the other times the loading of the Scatter file from the flasher was unsuccessful.

So the link you posted from dino direct the phone is out of stock from them anyways, however there is a phone the Changjiang A5000 it seems to be the identical model just different name to the Hero 2000+ I have seen around it's suppose to be the upgraded model of the H2000+ not sure what true is there about that, but it it possible in your opinion that this root method may work? Theoretically that is if everything is the same. I don't have the phone yet but when/if I do i will see if i can disassemble a little to see if i can find similar markings to the H2000+

I followed the tutorial to root my hero h2000+ phone and the key remapping tutorial. The root tutorial worked fine for me but the key remapping one not. When i remap the keys, home button just doesn´t work as intended, it looks like it works as DPAD_UP and the MUTE button(original mapping) just doesn´t do anything. I tried Keynumbertracker to know the key numbers and change the mtk-kpd by myself but i totally messed up and had to go back to original config . If anyone can help me, please these 3 buttons are hurting my eyes!!!

This guide is useful so your external sd card you have to physically put into the mobile your self will be able to be used as a storage for apps to be installed directly to, which is normally only possible if you use annoying apps like app2sd which are just a huge inconvenience.
ANYWAY right click this file and save it onto your phone or computer to copy to your phone http://www.cactuz.net/files/zp100/vold.fstab
once you load up your phone using a file manager with root permissions copy the file and replace it with the one installed onto the phone.

Remove 3 button virtual keys + use mute key as back (the key above the volume keys)
This will help you have a bigger screen view, more authentic iphone feel, and basically remove useless buttons.
Steps
1. First download ((THIS)) or the attached KEYREMAP.zip at the bottom of this post.
2. attach your phone via USB then copy the KEYREMAP.zip to your phones sdcard.
3. Unzip the file there you will get a folder called KEYREMAP, once you have done that inside that folder there will be 2 more folders
- MODDED (COPY AND PASTE THE SYSTEM TO SYSTEM)
- ORIGINAL (COPY AND PASTE THE SYSTEM TO SYSTEM)
-Disconnect your phone now.
4. Using an explorer (explorer or rootexplorer on your phone) go to the folder MODDED (COPY AND PASTE THE SYSTEM TO SYSTEM) then copy the folder "system" to the folder "system" at the main (ROOT) directory of your phone and replace the already exisiting files.
5. restart your phone and you are done
edit: Changed modded keymap due to system drop down menu button disappearing, fixed so now you can have a drop down menu button and still remove the 3 virtual buttons at the bottom

Personally friend, the camera is dirt, It might be 8MP but it's the lowest standard sorry. I only really got this phone because of it being super light weight so i could jog and stripped it off programs just about last a days use.

I just bought a Chinese phablet and was excited about the good deal I got for $250. The phone (Ginwave G503) arrived on Monday and I was disappointed to learn that the retailer did not install google apps as they do for some of their chinese phones. I figured I would just look around the internet and just install them myself. This proved to be much harder than I thought. I came across a German forum for Chinese phones and installed the google apps package that one user had uploaded to my system/app/ folder and it didn't work. I was told in the forum that It might not fork because I used some old files for Android 2.3. So they pointed me to a thread with a newer version and I deleted everything I had copied into the system/app/ folder and then replaced them with the new files. Then even less worked. My phone didn't ring anymore, sound didnt work, and the play store wouldn't even start at all anymore (it gave me a download manager stopped error or something like that). So then I figured out that those files were probably for Android 4.1 and my phone has Android 4.0.4. So then I found a package on rootzwiki for 4.0.4. I again deleted all the stuff i had put in the system/app/ folder and did a factory reset.
When I restarted the phone I was not able to install my ES File Explorer from my SD Card again. When I click on it it asked me if I want to install to phone or SD card, no matter what i select it says "X Application not installed". So I went into the chinese app store that was on the phone (called 360 followed by some chinese symbols) and actually found ES File Explorer on there. At this point, it's not where he bought it from, it's what he did to it. Sorry to say OP, but you're very far up ****'s creek.
If you can't get ahold of the factory ROM and no one has made an aftermarket ROM for your device, you're going to have to learn to compile yourself. I wouldn't advise you do that, however. Based on your original post, you don't do any research before mindlessly flashing any old thing from the internet to your device.
If I'm coming off as a ****, that's because you want to call xda worthless when you clearly have your head up your ass. Someone might've tried helping you before you insulted the forums.
The only thing I can suggest now is using recovery mode to factory reset your device. This might only work if you still have your factory recovery; you never mentioned that you flashed a new one and I can't imagine you flashed anything to your phone without a custom one... But again, reading your OP it sounds like you just flash things all willy-nilly.
BTW, your device didn't have gapps because it's probably not approved by Google to access the play store. No access to play store = no gapps.

Before anyone ever uses a new device thee shall make a Rom Backup; just in case... (at least i would do this).
Anyway; i don't understand why you've put the *.apk file inside the \System\apps folder...
You should try (have tried) to install Android SDK (If you've not installed already); and install the *.apk through adb.

I don't believe that the operating system blocks "Google Apps / Play Store". Either way i'm not going to say that it is impossible. But it doesn't make much sense.
But like "rockingondrums" said; If your device doesn't have have "gapps"; it's probably because it's not approved by Google to access the play store.
No access to Play Store = No "gapps"...
(Never seen that happening though)
Also you didn't need to root your device for that. "Play Store" doesn't require Root Permissions...
In order to help you (and help yourself up); I've done research for you (just because i understand your situation).
1st of all you shouldn't insult XDA Forum. This Forum has loads of information scattered around. Just dig like everyone else... There's probably the info you need. Yes it may take hours, day or months if you have no idea of what you're messing with. If the info is there, just don't expect people to do the research for you...
But, XDA is far from being "worthless". I've lost the count of how many times it helped me; and what i've learned is priceless. (And i still don't know everything i want to know ^^)
2nd; [Get your Device Working]
If you haven't messed up much... (Like flashing a wrong Rom)
Use "Recovery Mode" to "Factory Reset" your device.
I'm not sure if the method i'm about to show, works for every device or for your device; but it's a good example.
On my device i would do:
- Turn off the device;
- Press and hold in the following order: Camera Button; Then Volume - and then Power Button; let it vibrate 3 times; and then release the buttons.
In other words; this will "Reinstall / Reset" your system. You'll see in your screen if it works. Just dont turn off your device in any way while it's executing that operation.
Note: It may be different on your device. If it is... You have to search for a different method that will work for you.
Search this forum, Google, or Ginwave Website (if it has one...)
After this; i recommend you to do some search and learn on how to backup & restore your device.
Search XDA Forum. Grab some examples, compare the info you've got; then backup that device.
3rd; If you've flashed a wrong Rom; then you really have to compile your own, as i also couldn't find a Stock or Custom Rom for your device.
Note: If you (ever) find a Rom for your device; remember that it has to be A ROM FOR YOUR DEVICE! AND NOT SOME OTHER. Otherwise you'll probably end with a dead device...
And that would be sad and wasted money.

I am new to hacking android. I have built linux distros in the past, and have worked with Linux for 15 years,
I have just rooted a ZTE V965. It doesn't come pre-installed with Play store, and has all sorts of ZTE-specific Chinese apps. It has a good baseband circuit, a good screen, reasonable camera and I think is a great value phone, apart from the awful UI.
It is an android phone, although heavily customised. It has an MTK6589 processor coupled with 4Gb ROM and 512Mb RAM.
I have other phones which operate a much more "Vanilla" android. For example, the Guophone 9105 which also uses an MTK6589. This has a troubling tendency to reboot every random interval. Approx 6 times a week.
I have had success in the past running Linux systems built for much earlier kernels on later kernels. This suggests the ABI (application binary interface) for the Linux kernel changes rather slowly.
I am wondering how well the userland apps are separated from the kernel and drivers on Android.
Specifically, is it feasible to dump all the UI stuff from one phone onto another then change the init to launch the other UI?
Would this risk bricking the phone, or would the shell commands and ADB infrastructure still likely operate?
I guess I should change the bootloader to one that supports fastboot first, right? Is ther a how-to on achieveing this from the root shell?

Hi Nick, I have the same phone. I'm also very new to android, last phone was iOS and before that windows. I managed to root the V965 using Vroot. I also managed to install SuperSU and CWM. However, the CWM is not fully functional, I can only do a factory reset, not install any packages or roms. Probably the phone has a locked bootloader. I can't check, because the USB driver with the phone doesnt support fastboot.
I really need to get google play working in this phone, read a lot of stuff, tried many things, but I havent succeeded yet. Please let me know if you make any progress.
In China they are flashing this phone, found some ROMs even, but I am not sure how they manage and google translate isn't much help there.

After a factory reset, the setup wizard keeps crashing. Even after another resest. So I can't get in the phone anymore.
Any chance you can send me the USB drivers that are on the phone? My phone isnt deteceted anymore, so I can't access the drivers, which I want to reinstall. And of course they are not on the ZTE website.

Fastboot and ADB appear to be standard protocols, at least on my Ubuntu, which don't need special drivers. However, it does appear that the stock boot loaader on the v965 does fail to incorporate the fastboot option.
If you remove the battery, replace it then turn on holding the volume down, you will get a menu, but fastboot is not there.
I don't know for a fact, but I do suspect that if you have access to the running android system as root, then you could in principle change any of the internal flash data. Therefore, in principle, I guess you could replace the boot loader or anything else in the running android system. Anyone please correct me if I am wrong, or confirm if I am right.
The feature set of this phone seems to be the same as the feature set of my Guophone. MTK6589, dual SIM, etc. So this image may be a good place to start if considering a transplant.
If you have ROMs, then perhaps it is possible to flash the ROM from a root terminal. I'm thinking add the uncompressed ROM to the Micro SD card, then using the dd command, block copy it to the appropriate image area on the internal ROM, reboot, reset to factory defaults.
If anyone more experienced than me with the nuts and bolts of Android can confirm or deny this will work, or where it should be put, please let me know.
An important factor is that the NAND is not locked on the ZTE V965. So if you have a root shell on the phone, you can issue the following command:
mount -o remount,rw /[email protected] /system/
Once you have done this, you will have read/write access to the system partition.
The only thing I then need to know is what should I avoid changing that may break the ADB bridge/root console?
And is all the UI stuff kept together, if so, where?
Shuffle it around a bit, make a new ROM

I found out the culprit, I tried to install gapps (google apps package) to the system app folder. I thought these changes would be reversed with a factory reset, but they are not. Setupwizard.apk keeps crashing and is preventing me from accessing my phone, so I must find a way to remove it from the system app folder. However, since this error occurred, I am not able to contact the phone in any way from the PC. Adb toolkit does not detect it, even when I reinstalled your driver. It's quite puzzling, I dont understand why in recovery mode I cannot connect adb-toolkit anymore.
Got my V965 working again, but it was a lot of hassle with shell access. Still not fully functional, no drives detected when i connect to USB, which is quite annoying, but not more than that. If you ever make any progress with google apps or flashing, please keep me informed, that would make this phone much more useable. I'll also keep hacking away at it, but without a bootloader unlock (I still think this is the problem), I don't think it will be possible.
I'm convinced it's possible to flash the phone, it seems they do it a lot in China.

I did find another problem, I can't be reached on my phone, it always goes to voicemail. Same SIM in another phone works fine. No idea what's causing this.

I might be able to help you with the problem.
I have a mint, unused ZTE v965. I have used MTK Droid root and tools to extract a backup of the entire new phone. It is currently uploading to www dot nickhill dot co dot uk forward slash ZTE-V965_new_backup.zip
You should be able to write this back to your phone using flashtool.exe.
I don't know for sure if this will work, so entirely at your own risk! Just trying to help. If unsure, ask around.

Meanwhile, the MTK droid root and tools has a function to remove much of the chinese stuff (once the system has been installed) and there is always the cyanogenmod gapps package. This may be worth investigating.

Be careful with gapps. setupwizard.apk + factory reset = a lot of problems (if you install in system app folder)

Secondly, which tools did you use? Did you unpack the zip, open flashtools, select the scatter file then program the phone, or did you use some other method?
Which clean ROM did you then install, and how did you install it?
Did you then use MobileUncle to install CWM then use the cyanogenmod 10.1 gapps, or did you do something different?
It is useful to remember that MTKdroidtools has a useful function to remove chinese stuff. I think if more people contributed to the list of Chinese files that are safe to remove, that would be blade.
A detailed step-by-step guide might be helpful for anyone else with the same problem. One of the general problems I find is that there are plenty of guides around referring to this program, or that program, but few are detailed enough for someone who doesn't already know about those programs to use.
I pretty much bricked a Lenovo A766 yesterday, and it took several hours to learn about the tools to eventually unbrick it.
I would have rather spent my time understanding what is really going on, rather than spending my time learning vaguely what tool achieves what end result. If I understood more about the Android system, and built that knowledge on my understanding of Linux, I reckon I could achieve much more.
One thing I notice is that tablets and smartphones are actually replacing desktops and laptops. February this year, windows machines were down 7% YOY. I use Ubuntu for my main computer. Using these tools on Windows led me to significant frustration! This has led me to understand why there is a move. Maybe the tools provided for windows need to eventually move to android. We could then potentially use USB OTG to service other android devices. MTKdroidtools and flashtools runnng as a host on a separate Android system would be cool.

I used the delete China function, but it didnt catch very much. But with all the functions available now, it's quite easy to clean manually.

One of the general problems I find is that there are plenty of guides around referring to this program, or that program, but few are detailed enough for someone who doesn't already know about those programs to use.

Yes, I plan to make a topic for this phone, but at the moment I am still testing many things.
I pretty much bricked a Lenovo A766 yesterday, and it took several hours to learn about the tools to eventually unbrick it. I would have rather spent my time understanding what is really going on, rather than spending my time learning vaguely what tool achieves what end result. If I understood more about the Android system, and built that knowledge on my understanding of Linux, I reckon I could achieve much more.

I know how you feel, I was ready to toss this phone in the trash
One thing I notice is that tablets and smartphones are actually replacing desktops and laptops. February this year, windows machines were down 7% YOY. I use Ubuntu for my main computer. Using these tools on Windows led me to significant frustration! This has led me to understand why there is a move. Maybe the tools provided for windows need to eventually move to android. We could then potentially use USB OTG to service other android devices. MTKdroidtools and flashtools runnng as a host on a separate Android system would be cool.

I have no idea about the possibilities there. I'm not a programmer, just someone who is good with computers and knows a little bit of everything.

Did you give it a try yet? Another user did and google apps are working for him, so thats 2 for 2.
Are you still on your original ROM? If so, I have a question for you. Do you get notification badges on your icons, for instance, when you have a missed call, is there a red box with a 1 on the phone icon? Also, do your contacts get ID-ed when they call you? I have some problems with that, caused by the country code prefix. I am still running that ROM I downlaoded from the Chinese forum, but if your ROM doent have these issues, I will switch back ASAP.

Where are configuration settings stored accross factory resets?
I have come to the (perhaps erroneous) conclusion that the user interface and what the user will experience is governed primarily from:
the APKs in
/system/app/
/system/vendor/operator/app/
and the configuration files pertaining to the installed apps, which is located at:
/data/user/0/
I guess that when the android device is factory reset, the /data partition is completely cleared, right?
Is there a set of standard configurations which are unpacked from somewhere into /data/user/0/ after a factory reset, or is it normal for all configurations to be stored in their respective APKs?
So, I think that it's a good time to start another thread about the One X2. I own an X2 Mini & am really liking it.
The first thing I can say is to BACKUP your install several times until you get root. MAKE SURE to include your boot.img as part of the backup.
1. Going thru unlocking the bootloader (easy), Installing TWRP (moderate) & Rooting (very frustrating) was an interesting experience. Unlocking the bootloader was by far the easiest I have ever done on any phone. Just enable developer options & tic the switch....That being said---the rest of the process was a PITA.
2. Installing TWRP was easy/moderate--having to do it twice & finding that the tool I used installed an early version that put everything upside-down was "interesting" but not really too difficult (I'm a linux guy, so a trip to the terminal & ADB fixed that without too much trouble).
3. Then came the Magisk install--that took a couple of days & quite a bit of help from forum members to get "sort-of" ironed out. There is protection on the boot/kernel that takes a bit of work to get in the right order to get root. With the Stock ROM you need to either run the AutoRoot script from BLOX2.com ( http://blox2.com/how-to-root-the-blu-life-one-x2/ ) or if you are terminal-savvy there are manual instructions also. I'm NOT a Windows guy, but tried the auto route first......That in retrospect was not the best way for the X2 Mini---the version of TWRP that it installs is early & upside-down so controls do not work. I got past that & found thru trial & error I needed to install Magisk 12.0 (via TWRP zip install) & MagiskManager 4.33 (with a APK Manager after reboot) FIRST. (as Ieatgravity pointed out...)
4. After you get to root this way you can just stay there (depends if you need SafetyNet or not) or get the more modern version of Magisk. As AlienTeck points out, you MUST install zips inside of TWRP due to the way the boot/kernel protection works. Installing inside of TWRP works outside of the booted system & gets the install done. You can't at present install inside of a running system without a reboot as soon as the kernel detects a system-wide change. This would prevent several "on-the-fly" root modifiers from working. I would hope someone will see the need to create a new boot.img & Kernel to side-step these issues.
5. There is only one custom ROM available right now---DRAX, & with my current experience, it seems to work MUCH better than the Stock ROM. It changes the spacing on-screen (for the better) & is debloated....definitely is faster/smoother than Stock.
Well---I'm not the FINAL authority on the X2/X2/Mini...there are several great people on the forum...I did this just to give a brief info list for people to look at without TOO much searching. You will find all the answers in the main thread----it just takes a bit of digging to get to them.
My hope is that this thread starts a "how-to" thread for people to refer to...And if I've miss-stated any info I've posted above, please feel free to correct me.
I downloaded the very latest Magisk from git ( https://github.com/kantjer/MagiskFiles ) version 13.3-170812-zip & then removed the Magisk App-booted into recovery-flashed the Remove-Magisk zip-cleared cache-rebooted into recovery-flashed the new version & NOW I have Magisk working properly.
I thought I'd offer a newbie perspective on the big brother BLOX2 (Life One X2 4 gigs /64 gigs).
I was planning to use BLOX2 AutoRoot, but I couldn't make it work. It got as far as unlocking the bootloader, then just sat there doing nothing. Same thing for BLOX2 ToolKit. (I think both problems were caused by my computer, not the software.) So then I decided to do the unlock via ADB, then Flash TWRP f=and BLOX2 Core from an SD Card.
My laptop (Lenovo ideapad FLEX4 running Win 10 Home 64 bit) does not like to recognize my phone. When I open a command prompt window and type in 'ADB devices' (ENTER) the computer pops up a notice telling me "the last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it." ADB returns an ambiguous statement that "a list of devices is attached" (to what, I have no idea). NONETHELESS, when I got frustrated and ran "fastboot oem unlock" it unlocked my boot loader in less than 2 seconds. Go figure.
I had to install TWRP a couple-three times as well before it "took" and stayed even after a reboot to system. I remember reading in a guide to rooting the Blu R1HD (if memory serves) that one ought to reboot into recovery after each step in order to make sure that the original image does not overwrite the new one. Don't know if this is related, but I followed that dicta from that point on. Lucky for me, TWRP installed right-side-up.
As for installing BLOX2 Core, the hardest part of this was putting the file onto an SD card in such a way that TWRP would recognize it. After that I popped it into the phone, booted up, opened TWRP. I found the BLOX2 Core file, flashed it and sat back to watch the magic happen. Line upon line upon line of pretty little code bits rolling by -- and all of it in black! No angry red lines to be found anywhere! As someone who is so far much better at bricking phones than modding them, this was truly a lovely site.
After this, there was really nothing left for me to do but BACKUP EVERYTHING! First I did a TWRP backup. (I have not been able to convince Nandroid itself to function on demand. It works fine on a scheduled basis, but when I try to run it directly it runs for three seconds, announces it is finished, and presents me with a non-file.) Then I installed one of my favorite apps: Titanium Backup. I setup TB to backup all system data and user apps on a schedule, and then ran the first one directly.
In all the excitement, I had forgotten all about Magisk, but a few hours later I noticed an icon labeled "Magisk." I clicked on it just to see if it was actually installed or just sitting there to install if I wanted to. When I saw that it was indeed the installer I just shut it down and left it alone. I strongly suspect that it was SU-Magisk failing to play nice that led to my bricking my first BLOX2, so I wanted to research how to get rid of it safely. Well, before I could get anywhere on that, the system on my BLOX2 started acting weird in familiar ways. Apps that I had not opened started 'closing' suddenly -- each one flashing a popup at the bottom of the screen that immobilized the touch screen until it was dismissed. When my first BLOX2 started doing this I thought I must have gone overboard with one of the longer-battery-life (Xposed) modules. So I frantically started zeroing them out to stock. This didn't help and the slippery slope had been crossed.
With my second BLOX2 I was a bit better prepared. I immediately uninstalled MAGISK and frantically ran every utility I could think of to be sure that there were no bits and pieces left to irritate SU into killing my phone. Just to be on the safe side I reflashed the entire BLOX2 Core zip, then backed up the result with both Nandroid and TB. This was a couple days ago, and my phone seems content.
I know that the BLOX2 Core I am running is not technically a "custom" ROM, but it still runs noticeably more smoothly than the original. Right now Settings shows 3.6GB total Ram, with 2.1GB free, which means that it is using about 1.5GB with screen on but only background stuff running.
As to my laptop's refusal to see my phone, I think the problem is in my PC. I have had nothing but problems with SP Flash, ADB, and all the various Qualcom-related tools. I have tried QFIL, SN-Write, WRTool, and the like. Even MTK DroidTools gives a message that there is nothing connected to the computer, then freezes. Go figure.
One thing I've learned is that an OTG cable is a real nice thing to have & TWRP will recognize it with a simple click in storage. Put your downloads on a Stick--connect it to an OTG cable, plug it into the phone & you are set.

This little thing is so cool. Right now I am doing a Nandroid backup (via TWRP) and storing the backup on my USB drive.
I wondered what that funny little cable was.... It came with my BLU VIVO 5R, which I probably could have saved from the brick-yard if I had known what that little cable could let me do.

I ordered a BLU Life ONE X2 Mini - 5.0" Unlocked Smartphone -4G LTE - 64GB + 4GB RAM -Grey.
So just googling for root and so far, won't have phone til next week, so no rush.
