[Q]recovery and kernel ?!?! - General Questions and Answers

Hi... i want to know if after auto-root, and after flashing a custom kernel, do i get a recovery ? or i shall flash a CWM ? thank you for help

CF auto-root? Not sure, check the thread, but it should be in the first post. Just boot your device into recovery mode and find out! For example, a samsung phone can be booted to recovery usually by volume up+power.

well then i have to try... thanks mate

try app Quick Boot (available in Google Play) if you don't know which keys to press. If you have recovery, you can directly boot into...

the thing is not in which keys to press.. all i wanted to know is that if custom kernels contain a recovery or not before trying to flash any of them... solved

custom (or stock, for that matter) kernels don't include a recovery.

Installing TWRP Recovery - few questions, please help

Hi,
Some could be newbie questions, please forgive. I tried my best to search and find answers.
Currently I am running on latest Stock ICS update with no Root. I am thinking of installing TWRP ported by rayman(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1759452). I read the whole thread and its been suggested as Okay to flash latest .zip using CWM to get the TWRP.
Since I am still in stick Recovery,
a) Is it still okay to simply flash the zip file using recovery? will that replace the stock recovery and get the TWRP?
b) I assume Root isn't needed for flashing TWRP, or am I wrong?
Also my Volume UP isn't working, that's main reason I am bit hesitant to play with different recovery as we does need to Power + Volume UP in some cases (though most case we use Power + Volume Down).......Can some one having much experience clarify as how important to have Volum Up working?
Thank you.
use Peri or one of the other tools to get root and recovery.....you will need root and a base recovery other than stock to really get Twrp. You may need to use a different root method if the V+ is required though.
........look on the Playstore for the "reboot recovery" app that will do the job for you without the V+ or Flash a Rom with a "reboot recovery" option in the power menu.
Once you have root id suggest getting "ota rootkeeper" from the Playstore aswell.

Recovery mode problem

I badly need your help.. I can't enter the recovery mode (RCK) of my tf300.. upon pressing the up button, it will send me to this screen where I can't do anything but to reset it back again.. I'm planning to flash SuperSU to root my device.. what does this pic mean and how can I solve this prob? thanks!
This is the Stock Recovery. You cant do anything there. You must be unlocked and then you must flash a custom Recovery first. I recommend TWRP 2.2, cause its the only one without bugs.

detect keypress during boot

Hi,
Is there any way to detect the volume up/down presses during the boot?
Something similar to this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...kernel-dual-boot-powered-boot-custom-t2204705
* Normal Boot -> No keys are pressed, cyan LED ->Find kernel in /data/media/boot/1st.img
* Recovery Boot -> Volume Up key pressed, green LED -> Go to recovery
* Custom Boot -> Volume Down key pressed, blue LED ->Find kernel in /data/media/boot/2nd.img
Thanks.
Xposed has a disable feature which can be triggered during boot by repetitively pressing random keys, so yes its possible, only after enough has started to be able to tell if they're pressed. LED too. But by the time it can tell if something is pressed, you'd already have to do a full reboot to do what you want it to do.
You won't be able to switch kernels like that since you'd HAVE to go into the bootloader to boot one (and you can't really script that on the phone itself) or have to reboot into recovery and reflash the kernel (maybe with a recovery script). No point in the way you want to boot into recovery either, since you can just go into the bootloader and enter recovery from there, rather than booting into Android, then rebooting again into recovery.
Maybe possible if you edit the kernels, ROM and the recovery (maybe even the bootloader - don't know if its possible, could be a brick), but its overkill. There's already an easy enough way to get into recovery. Just flash the kernel if you want to switch.

Thanks for answering. Indeed, simply flashing a kernel in recovery would definitely be the easiest.
You can boot another kernel from the current kernel using kexec_hardboot (implemented in many kernels) so probably a hook like Xposed that clals kexec_hardboot would work.
I believe (I haven't checked but I recall seeing somewhere) that Nexus 5 has actually two bootloader zones so you have a backup in case you mess one up. This, however, is useless since the bootloader is closed source.

Yeah, there's a secondary bootloader which "some" people have gotten into, but others couldn't. I still wouldn't attempt to mess with it either way.

Problem Rooting/Custom Recovery

Hello all,
I am attempting to root my Spring Galaxy S5 (G900P) but I am having some problems doing so. I have already officially upgraded it to Lollipop fyi, not sure if that might be part of the problem. Several online guides and Youtube videos instruct me to install a custom recovery and then use that to install SuperSU. However, even though I am successful at installing custom recovery (both TWRP and PhilZ have been tried) I am not able to boot into them. The stock "Android System Recovery <3e>" is all that loads by holding power + volume up + home. Does anyone know why this is the case and what I can do to obtain root? I am interested in being able to load custom roms and I'm not particularly worried about Knox or the warranty, I just wish to be able to customize and mess around with my device. Please help!
Thank you for any and all responses!
You flash the reco ery in odin. Uncheck reboot reset. Pull battery after flash. Boot to custom reco ery with power+home+volumn up
I read some phones have a script that o er writes the custom one you flashed. Thats why pull battery after flash. And norest checked in odin.
Sent from my SM-G900P using XDA Free mobile app
That did it! Just had to pull the battery and immediately boot into recovery. Thank you for the tip!

Help Recovering my Droid-X (wont boot past M Logo) - Root+ROM somehow?

So I pulled out my old Droid-X today to use for secondary reasons (rooting, development, etc)..
Unfortunately, after charging and attempting to power on, it hangs at the "M" (Motorola) Logo Screen indefinitely!
:crying:
I AM however able to power it on into the Recovery options!!
(I whiped the system Cache but it didn't help)..
Anyhow..
At this point, I want to explore options how to Recover the phone - ways to Root it and load a Custom ROM.
Unfortunately though, I am NOT ABLE to access the Phone's Settings to allow Debug mode, or allow Third-party apps, etc..
So is there a way to Recover the phone by Rooting+Custom ROM, considering it wont Boot past the "M" Logo?
Any and all help is VERY MUCH appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

hello!!
As you said the phone isn't booting up.
so i may recommend you flashing a stock rom first through the working recovery.
or if you want to have a custom one then it will let you do so through the fastboot ( but device should be rooted!).
if you are interested to install a custom rom that can be done but you need to reflash your phone to the stock rom.
that's the fix.
Thanks for the reply! So when you say to "flash a stock rom", you're just saying to boot up into the recovery menu using the volume key, and simply selecting the factory wipe/restore option? Correct? From there, (assuming it was able to successfully flash to stock and boot up completely), I would then be able to achieve root and flash a new rom.. Sounds simple enough. Thanks. Also though, you said "or if you want to have a custom one then it will let you do so through the fastboot" -- how exactly would I go about doing that? ..you say "but device should be rooted" which it's not. So I'm guessing that makes the 2nd option impossible, meaning I only have 1 option, which is the factory wipe, is this correct?
Thanks! :good:

Just booting into recovery and factory reset is not the method .you need to flash a stock ROM from the update option.
Then only you will boot. Here is the link to the stock ROM (gingerbread)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1517985
Hope it might help.
Download file( PC) put it on sdcard and flash it. Done.
Then you can install CM 11 on your device after you root it through kingoroot once you install this stock ROM
You can also yourself search for stock ROM for droid X if this didn't helped.
Good luck:good:
Hit thanks if helped
