Upgraded to ICS, now wat? - Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G

was on gingerbread. waited and waited for the OTA updated. ended up rooting. ice cream sandwich update came out and couldn't get it OTA. used Kies and installed the update. finally, now have ICS. lost root access. so anyone out there with the official ics? recommend what to do now!

I'd flash a ROM. I recommend CM10 to have Jelly Bean! There are a lot of ROMS in the dev section. Go choose one. Make sure you flash a recovery!
Sent from my CM10 Blaze

I'll second the recommendation to go to a JB based rom.

any convincing wins for the JB release? as i am pretty content with what i have on ICS. everything has been smooth so far, nothing buggy at all.
improvements todo: root, remove bloatware, get wifi tethering to work (currently broadcasts signal but devices cannot connect - says connection is unsuccessful)
here are my screenshots (if i should get something else):
1. Lock screen - I noticed the text notification that appears turned black in ics, which i like. it just blends in with my lock screen wallpaper. going for the simple dark black wallpaper for longer battery life? i guess haha
farm9.staticflickr.com/8250/8453732470_8826585926.jpg
2. Screen 1 - man that weather widget that comes with Eye in the Sky is the best weather app! plain simple
farm9.staticflickr.com/8251/8453732494_45cd46759f.jpg
3. Screen 2 - My home screen with a black google search bar that came with ics, yay! also using Widgetsoid with those widgets that i happen to use quite often.
farm9.staticflickr.com/8381/8453732504_333f2afecf.jpg
4. Screen 3 - Well more Widgetsoid action going here. This is my utilities section. I just decided to turn my regular icons into the widgetsoid theme. The weather is actually USB tethering now here. I am enjoying the sound recorder and flashlight of easy access.
farm9.staticflickr.com/8385/8453732484_e8fef3b090.jpg
so yep, recommend widgetsoid and eye in the sky. AND I AM A NOOB ON XDA CAN'T POST LINKS OR PICS

Swype is a little slow in messaging for some reason. A weird icon appears every time at the top of notifications indicating 'Swype in use' so that may be making swype a bit more laggy. ANYONE EXPERIENCE THIS? this new icon appears in ics and not gingerbread. what about JB?

There is the Tweaked ICS rom also if you do like ICS. It's already debloated and optimized. The Swpye icon can be diasbled in the swype options.
Also you can disable most the bloatware now that you are on the stock ICS. Go to settings > apps > select "all" and disable what you want (if it can be).
As for JB, they are all pretty good (bug free). I'm currently using Slim Bean 3.1 with the inverted packages, but you really can't go wrong with any of them. Try them and find out. But you still have to flash CWM and make a backup with it first thing.
GL and enjoy.

Some may need to have the updates uninstalled first, it's in the same location.

it seems like i was able to do a lot of stuff already without rooting. thanks to the disable app feature in ICS, it is pretty much like titanium backup. ended up bypassing the built-in hotspot check and can tether wifi.
well, i ended up rooting. so what am i to use root features on?
guess i can only think of AdFree. also, i can permanently remove disabled apps. anything else to take advantage of root access?

If you go to a Jellybean based rom, most of them have button light notifications. "What is that?", you may ask...
The blaze doesn't have an LED to visually notify you if a call came or a message came...sure, the screen can activate when the call is coming, but if you're in the other room and don't hear it, or if the phone is on silent and you don't see it, you'll never know about it until you actually check your phone by turning on the screen...
Which many people do INCESSANTLY.
Button light notifications can enable the back/home/voice/settings LED to light up so you can be notified of it. It's nice to have.
Also, Google Now works by default with JellyBean, no funny business required. I had Google Now on rooted ICS and I liked it, but the only one that works on ICS for our phone is of course a much older version of Now, and it doesn't support certain features.
Google now is great, check it out on youtube or something.

This might get asked a lot but how is the battery life on JB??
For ICS, I'm currently charging about once every 1.5 days. I usually charge it at night, sometimes I can skip one night and charge it the night after. Sometimes I do use the phone a lot during the day and need to charge it within the next night, maybe even within half a day, but rarely. Sometimes I just charge it at work, so ~1.5 days. To get the 2 days worth, I'm usually Airplane mode-ing it when I'm definitely not going to be looking at my phone, such as at work except for breaks - I can probably go 2.5 days like this, but I still charge at 2.
How does JB compare?

Rogers Android Froyo 2.2 bugs

Figured perhaps a bug thread for the Rogers 2.2 update may be in order?
Not sure if this is a bug or not, but it does seem a bit odd. The lock screen usually has the text "swipe screen to unlock" or something to that nature (the part with the <<< and >>>) - mine had it to begin with in 2.2, however now it has dissapeared and I just see the little lock icon saying the phone is locked. Is there any way to get it back or is this a 2.2 "feature" so you see more of your background?
The 2nd problem I noticed I have already started a thread on (and no replies ) - it deals with contact linking and Facebook. Seems something is whacky there too possibly. The thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=907088

Definitely a feature. I love the clearer lock screen.
Bug: Haptic feedback vibration is very low system wide (not including soft keys).
Bug: Voice Dialer (Voice Dialler) is misspelled in the App Drawer.
Bug: Going to Settings > Display > Font Style causes a crash.
All I remember so far but there has been several.

Confirmed feature of Froyo, or is this a Rogers/Samsung specific feature? Just wondering because it WAS showing up for a few lock screens right after the upgrade, then eventually stopped showing up - reboot/battery reset didn't get it back... haven't tried a factory reset yet to see if that fixes it (if it's broke).

No problems here - did you have it set to a custom/non default font when upgrading? I had mine on default (I prefer that to any other font) and have no issues changing fonts.
I've had some issues with wifi losing it's internet / market connection after wake up sometimes. shows still connected, but no network access. i have to turn wifi off, then back on occasionally.

Go to Settings -> Wireless and network -> Wi-Fi settings. From this screen, hit your menu key and select Advanced and try changing your Wi-Fi sleep policy to Never... perhaps it's set to "When screen turns off" causing you to lose Wi-Fi whenever you lock your phone?
Oh, another bug possibly...
Go to Camera app and open Settings. Open the wrench tab and go to the 2nd page. Click the Update button beside Firmware update. Either of the next two menu choices ("Check version by network" or "Firmware update") seem to freeze the phone (power off required). Doesn't seem to happen all the time, but my first time trying to get the update to do something caused the phone to lock up in to camera mode.
Also, the "It will occur additional fee." message is quite fun... no idea what fees I will incur, or for what reason (and I won't even get in to the grammar issues).

Well it can't be a Froyo feature because no other manufactures use the same lock screen as they do. So it's a Samsung feature brought on by Froyo. Simply, it can't be a bug.

Its much faster and smoother than 2.1 stock was for me. Did you set it up fresh? Older settings can cause issues.
you guys have this issue? you may not even know it until you try to use mass storage mode. I use iSyncr (lets me use smart playlists based on ratings) so I need mass storage mode.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=907854
My wife and I (each have a Captivate) have had none of the bugs you guys have mentioned.
All we have experienced is a faster phone and WAY better battery life.
The only thing that upset me is that the update deleted my Ocean Wave livewallpaper, but I just redownloaded it.
Did some of you guys experiencing bugs ever run a custom ROM? I am thinking maybe these issues might be because you did...
Re: Haptic Feedback.
I've noticed it too, it's much weaker than before.
I could have sworn that I saw the option to turn up the intensity before, but can't find it now.

Go for it..I installed it and so far the improvements have been great over 2.1
Battery life is much improved, its faster than stock 2.1 (and after applying Ryan's OCLF...its incredibly responsive)
If you do have a lagfix installed prior to upgrading you should uninstall that first. Thats what I did and didn't have much problems. my one issue with Swype was fixed by clearing the cache.

I gave it a go on your recommendation. Updated with no issues, now to actually try using it...
Has anyone rooted after applying 2.2? If so, what did you use?
I've been having issues turning on WiFi on my phone ever since I installed the update.
I accidentally clicked Airplane mode on my phone this morning, now my phone has been trying to turn the WiFi back on for about 5 mins....
As for battery life, my phone the first few days after installing Froyo seemed great, but now it doesn't really seem as good? No idea why....
And I've noticed a bit of lag at times while navigating on my phone.
Using LauncherPro Plus as my home screen, haven't rooted or installed any roms or anything.
I have noticed that when you turn the phone on from when it is off, if you don't wait for the wallpaper to display before swiping your phone on, the phone will stall. Mine stalled for about 5 minutes before it responded again.
I'm having a couple of small issues:
1) I can't get the GPS to look position. It just displays "Waiting for Location" and sits there.
2) OCLG - I got about 1000 on quadrant score. It doesn't seem laggy but I wanted to apply this lagfix to see if it can be better. I tried runnig the first option in the menu (z4 rooting), and it tries to launch either a page or the market (not sure which) but says "Page Not Found", but when you close it and press back, it says the root was successful, but all the other options are still "unavailable" so I can't apply the lagfix. There's a second method in the menu to do a root and that one fails as well, so I'm not sure how to get this working.
3) Camera - I got the same problem as a previous poster for the firmware update where it says "fees will occur" then when I click "yes", it tries to launch a page/market (again not sure) and says "Page Not Found".
4) Rooting - not sure how to root because the previous method of putting my update.zip and doing it through the recovery menu fails.
Any help is appreciated.
I was running rooted lagfixed stock Rogers 2.1 before. Removed lagfix first and did a factory reset before updating to 2.2 through Kies.
After updating to 2.2 I re-rooted and lagfixed with no issue.
Things bugs I have noticed on my phone:
- Camera a few times had started up with a black screen only with usual camera options but it's as if it does not see anything from the lens (had done camera fw update on it. You can download it from Samsung Apps app)
- When viewing "Contacts" can't press Back button to exit it so I just press Home button. Small bug
- can't set up smtp outbound email settings on stock email app. Keep getting it can't connect with server even when manually inputting correct settings.
- Battery undetermined as i've been playing with GPS a lot testing it so it drains pretty quick.
- GPS - Had no problems with 2.1 (using GPS + "Use wireless networks") but it's been horrible on 2.2. Locks ok when stationary, fluctuating between 5-9 satellite locks (used lbstestmode to check) but when you are moving or when using it for Navigation, it will be ok for a short bit then would eventually start bouncing all over the place or start getting weak/lost locks. Was using it on the hwy one time and it would suddenly tell me to do a u-turn because it thought I was on a side road. (condition was clear and phone was by windshield).
What it did fix for me:
- Opening Gallery before would sometimes lock up the phone requiring battery pull in 2.1. Fixed for me with 2.2
- Running latest updated Maps would sometimes lock up the phone requiring battery pull in 2.1. Fixed for me with 2.2 but still somewhat useless because of issue mentioned previously.
I can live with all the bugs except for the abismal gps.

3 main problems with this phone

1.) Every time im in the middle of texting with someone in the stock messaging app my keyboard just starts to freeze and lag out like crazy. I thought I fixed this problem but turning off power saving mode but it only helped a little bit
2.) This is probably a well known issue with the phone but every time I get a text message my screen turns on! Its really annoying and im not sure if there is a fix for this yet but if there is please help!
3.) When I set custom vibrations for my phone every time I get a text message it still just ends up as the basic call vibration. I tried using all of the other vibrations in the phone but it always just goes back to the basic vibration when I get a text message but when I get a phone call thats when it uses the custom vibrate tone
Im not sure if anyone could help with these issues but if so please leave feed back! I really hope im not the only person with these problems so if there is a patch that these things get fixed! I love this phone and everything but these glitches are starting to get annoying.
You should try different rom... I hope it can solvr ur problem...

honestly i think that either you can reflash stock rom, or a custom rom, and btw, are you stock or are you using something like synergy or beans?
Well thats the thing im 100% stock right now. Im not rooted or anything. If I root will that fix all my problems?
SMS Popup
For the text message issue, just use SMS Popup from the play store (its way better than the stock anyway) then turn off the notifications in the settings of the stock sms and then your screen won't turn on, Hopefully that will help you. Also, you can set custom ringtones for contacts... possibly custom vibrations.
Another options is to install GoSMS from the market, think it has options for all your problems.

well you can try the gosms app from play store... rooting and trying a stock rom like nosympathy's rooted stock can help tons, swiftkey is your best frind when it comes to typing, and custom roms like synergy or aosp roms are crazy fast (i know as i have flashed all of the roms from verizon's development forum so far,), and suggest adfree if you want to use gosms, or use synergy's 1.1 or 1.2 rom. they are lag free

Well, if you reset/wipe everything, even though you aren't rooted there are ways to get all your apps back automatically - I believe when you set up your phone it even asks if you would like to "Restore your settings" when you sign into your Google account. However... I don't really recommend it. Since you're having trouble right now, I think it would be a great idea to just WIPE it clean, and have a fresh start. See if your phone works great as it is (cause it could always be some app causing problems too..)
Installing apps is really easy - all you have to do is go to http://play.google.com (once you sign into the play store and accept the terms on your phone) and go to "My Apps", and it'll show you everything you have downloaded in the past. Anything you want to install, you can just click "INSTALL" on your computer and it'll automatically send it to your phone!!
When you have a large amount of apps to install, I find this way far easier than searching for each one on your phone

This really helped thanks! As for the entire wiping thing I find that my texting is improved as in the keyboard lags far FAR less now. I still have the same 2 problems where my vibration cannot be changed while getting notifications and my screen still turns on every time I get a text message.
If you install handcent it's very good, plus it stops that turn screen on, also just go into settings if you want disable the pop up msging too.

Your phone has a problem, since none of these are issues on mine. You probably want to wipe and start over. Or you could root your phone, install Titanium backup, and use that to backup all of your apps. Then wipe, reinstall TB, and reinstall the apps. I'm running the Synergy ROM and it's awesome.

[Q] Software problem?

I've been using this phone for a year and a half now. Updated the phone to KJ6 when it came out. Modded with Adrenaline shot and lagfix. Phone been treating me well until yesterday. I was still using it like normal before I went to sleep and it was running normal as well. The next day, the phone is a messed up (kinda). The home button doesn't work anymore. It doesn't bring me back to the "Desktop" when I hit it. Lights up and vibrates when I press it. Holding it doesn't bring up the recent app menu. I can only exit apps by hitting the back button. Only time it worked is when I'm on the phone, It does bring me back to the "Desktop" when I hit it. Another problem is the power menu. Everything's gone except for "Power off" (no flight mode, etc). Lock screen disappeared, I don't use any pattern lock or password. So I normally would have the gray screen I need to slide off the screen when I hit the power button, but it's gone now. The big problem is, I can only dial out with the phone. I cannot receive any phone calls. Data, text messages, wifi all work fine, not sure about GPS. Anybody had this problem before? Is there any fix for it? If not, I guess I have to just wipe everything, flash new rom and hope for the best?
Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks in advance
I had that phone about as long as you and never had that happen before. I'd try running the gremlin remover and that should clear up any problem you have with the phone

I agree with falcons2 try the gremlin remover, but if that doesn't work maybe you should look into some of the ICS roms that have soft keys.
Good Luck!
So I guess I am going to flash new rom. There are so many roms out there and I'm not sure which ones are good. I would like my phone to be fully working, so I guess ICS is out. That leaves GB roms. I'm looking for something with pretty good speed, stable, clean and good battery life. Suggestions??

That's a little harsh! Assuming you don't need TVout ( ), most of the ICS ROMs are "daily drivers" at this point in time.
I would say Valhalla black is probably the best GB rom personally, or even Valhalla Black FB edition
Here is VB > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1404863
And here is FB edition > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1598561
Raver said he MIGHT update VB (please don't bug him about it though), but as-is its an amazing rom with unmatched battery life imo
Main reason I can't do ICS is because wifi calling doesn't work (I think?). Other than that, I don't see any other problems with ICS.
Just wondering how the Barebone KJ6 runs? It's almost stock so I can't go wrong with it? Just need to add back whatever I need. I looked at those VB roms, both look very good to me. Thanks for the suggestions
Love Valhalla black, but if you want more stock gingerbread, then go for Valhalla final... black is based in final.

Viper XL 3.1 and Navigation

Having an issue with Google Navigation (maps is ok), but whenever it goes 3D mode it crashes shortly after :|
Currently on HBoot 2.14
Have noticed E/Sensors (973): MLUpdateData error (code 31) a couple of times throughout the logcat, is this G-Sensor related?
Phone slowing down after Viper 3.1
Did anyone who installed Viper 3.1 experience phone slowing down after the install? There is a lag when the notification bar is pulled down or switching between screens.
Being a noob, this is what I did -
1.) fastboot flash boot boot.img
2.) wiped cache and dlvik cache
3.) flashed viper3.1.zip
4.) I haven't tinkered around with the kernel. It should be the stock.
In effort of speeding up the device, I went to Venom Tweaks --> CPU and switched to "Performance". Not sure if that was the right thing to do.
Reading the Forums, everyone seems to have buttery smooth experience, not me
Any help is appreciated.

This is something I've noticed from Jelly Bean in general ( Cyanagenmod, AOKP, and Sense 4.5 ). Devs keep saying they'll address it before it eventually gets swept under the rug. Between that and signal issues I was having I've switched back to running stock (I'd rather have a working phone with a little bloat and a few less features). If you have to have Google Navigation you may want to do the same. Or maybe someone could set up a bounty to have devs actually do something about it (if there is something that can be done). Or you can go back to sense 4.0 for the time being. Sorry to sound like a negative Nancy.

If you have to have Google Navigation you may want to do the same. Or maybe someone could set up a bounty to have devs actually do something about it (if there is something that can be done). Or you can go back to sense 4.0 for the time being. Sorry to sound like a negative Nancy.

Currently on HBoot 2.14
Have noticed E/Sensors (973): MLUpdateData error (code 31) a couple of times throughout the logcat, is this G-Sensor related?

The lag when pulling down notification is because you have quick toggles enabled. Disable them and it will be much faster.

On the topic of the Notification bar, I have the Horizontal Quick Settings, has VQS been ported over as well or only HQS at this time? ViperXL 3.1.0
Cheers.
Waze is what I always use on JB roms, works like a champ. Its sweet, one of the coolest apps in the market. So another one who recommends waze

tweaked 3.2 question problems . . . can't make calls

I was running tweaked 3.0 on FP5 and was experiencing lots of lag. I decided to upgrade to 3.2 to see if anything happens.
To do this:
1. Used ODEN to install tweaked 3.2. (I did not clear cache)
2. Reinstalled Samsung keyboard and visual voicemail.
3. Switched theme to black and blue
The phone kicked it's lag problem. I could click the applications button and don't have to watch the spinning circle (loading) for 30 seconds before getting to the apps. When I tried to make a call, the application phone (process com.sec.android.app.dialertab) stops unexpectedly. All I can do is force close.
I decided to install stock to try and get the phone to work and soft bricked it. I odened EP4 stock and got back to working phone. Woo Hoo.
I started reinstalling apps and now the phone won't work. I't crashes on open... what can I do? not install tweaked 3.2?

So does the phone crash when on stock or no? Can you get a logcat of the FC? Might show why it's all angry and what not. If you can shoot it my way
Having a better night

The phone does not crash on stock ROM and I figured out what to do to keep it from crashing, I think... besides, I have no idea how to get a logcat. someone tried to explaine it once, but my brain melted and I never was able to figure it out.
Fix:
I went back to EP4 ROM via ODEN. I then took 2 OTA updates to get to FP5.
I then used ODEN to add CWM and tweaked 3.2
Last night when I added the software I also added Visual Voice mail and the Samsung keyboard. Unfortunatly, the keyboard I founf on my PC would not install so I download it again. Somehow the one I downloaded was not the one that was supposed to be on the phone and I think that was what was killing it. The new keyboard had multiple languages including Russian. For now I have not loaded Samsung keyboard.
I also want to load Visual Voicemail and the stock screen capture. I am afraid of killing the ability to make calls and view contacts. where can i get the samsung keyboard, visual voicemail app and stock screen capture app for FP5?
On a side note, despite the phone working good and showing no sines of lag, the Youtube app crashes every so often. I'll probably uninstall it.
Another thing of note that might just be a theme issue or might be by design: I'm on black and blue theme and the 4 home buttons, phone, contacts, messaging, and apps are not evenly spaced right and left. they seem a bit squished together.
Almost forgot...I can't get haptic feedback to work. It works in Stock ROM and worked yesterday in tweaked 3.0 before I monkey'd with the phone.

Well at least there was an improvement
Not sure why haptic would stop... and the launcher thing is odd - screenshot?
You should be able to pull the needed apks for VVM and keyboard from the zip full of apks in the Tweaked 3.2 OP - or you could use tweaktools. Sorry for all the troubles!
Is there a way to disable/eable haptic in the ROM that I failed to notice? I did see the toggle in the android settings.

Haptic feedback
I managed to find a setting for haptic feedback in the TMS Parts > General which does not seem to do much of anything.
I did find tactile feedback for the lock screen. Now I can unlock the phone without looking. I also have tactile feedback on the keyboard. I'm missing it on the home screens.
Maybe this is a desired function of the ROM?

Hmm...
Yeah the haptic bit in tsmparts doesn't seem to do much - it did at one point (likely the Froyo days) but I forget about it and leave it in there it seems lol - have you tried going into sound settings? I think there is a haptic or vibrate type option in there that you can turn on/off, though I'm not 100% on that one.
