So what happens if.... - Thunderbolt General

I am tempted to go back to a regular sense 2.1 stock rooted ROM and attempt the upgrade even though I know I might not be able to root again for a while. I rooted through revolutionary. What is the worst, likely thing that could happen? Will I boot back up to all of my data on the stock Thunderbolt ICS?

You have to fully unroot to take the ota.

You, of course, need to fully unroot before you flash back to the stock ROM and take the OTA. If you do not fully unroot, taking the OTA will brick you since it contains a new encrypted hboot. I would just wait for the rooted version of the OTA to be released, which should be posted within the next few days.
It would suck to unroot and take the OTA and then have to wait however long before you can root again.
However, if you're talking about flashing an old stock ROM backup that you may have made a long time ago, it wont have any complications. You will be able to receive the OTA then, but do not install it without fully unrooting first.

Buy fully on rooting, does that include the option to on route that is found in the Super SU settings?

I wouldn't trust it.
Just download the files and go through command prompt to unroot. Not sure if it can be done with trter10s tool or not. I rooted mine with the same method and when I ran trter10s tool and hooked up my phone, it basically was saying it was interrupted. So I had to unroot the old manual way through command prompt.
If you can use his tool though, by all means, use it. It will definitely save you time.

No, that only removes superuser. Fully unrooting means flashing everything back to stock (aka tbolt tool)

Hboot has to be stock as well.

We are talking about taking the new ICS OTA and the consequences of installing that OTA with your current hboot.
Don't try it.

Isn't that what he was talking about? Sounds like he was rooted with s-off, flashed a stock rooted rom and then updated via the OTA. Sounds like he didn't apply the stock locked bootloader and the OTA applied just fine. Wouldn't the OTA just overwrite the bootloader with the new locked one?
Looks like the only problem you'd have doing it that way is waiting for a new root method.

Possibly. I figured you'd probably have to return the bootloader to stock before taking the OTA to prevent a brick.
If you can work around it that way, that is definitely a good thing to know.

I was previously on the most up-to-date version of gingerbread, and used HTC Thunderbolt tool v1.0.1 to S-off/root the device.
I flashed stock recovery 2.11.605.9 to the device. I downloaded the following RUU_Mecha_GINGERBREAD_S_VERIZON_WWE_2.11.605.9_Radio_0.01.78.0916w_3_NV_8K_1.41_9K_1.64_release_226879_signed, pulled the rom.zip from it, and renamed it to PG05IMG.zip to flash it to the device. The device then updated itself to the most up-to-date gingerbread version. I then performed the update for ICS, it installed itself just fine, and the device booted up into ICS. I checked the bootloader, it says that I am S-off Hboot-6.04.1002, and Radio-2.02.00.1117r.
After restarting the device, I started HTC Thunderbolt tool v1.0.1. It asked if I wanted to install SU, I said yes, and it proceeded through it. Once the program finished its installation, I had the SU app in the app drawer, and downloaded ROM Manager so that I could install the recovery, it asked for SU permission to install it. I then restarted just fine into recovery to double check that it was there.

So you pulled the OTA and it flashed fine with the Revolutionary Hboot and stock recovery? I have stock .19 recovery and the same hboot as you have there, running rooted stock, and the OTA failed for me. It tried to run and then failed about 1/3 of the way through.

Backing up current ROM now.. have the RUU on SD ready to flash.. Looks like RUU in trter10's sig has stock recovery in it, so going to try flashing RUU with 4ext and nusensex currently installed.
backup done.. formatting all except SD to be safe (ext3)
Loading PG05IMG.zip in bootloader...
Updating.. it says it Bypassed the bootloader... excellent... all others updated OK including recovery and radio..
rebooting.. seems to be starting up ok. Signed in to google, will check for OTA in a moment.
Found 395.638MB update (ICS) Downloading now.. appears to have enabled 3g to download even though i'm on wifi.. this my take a bit. not sure why it's not 4g at the moment.
hmm, ics loaded, when trying to root with the thunderbolt tool, phone reboots itself into the bootloader. any ideas? ok, had to choose the bootloader option, and then choose the fastboot option to go back in and it took. weird.
installed busybox and updated 4ext to the latest, looks like im in business.

So, I installed the stock Rom via recovery which overwrite clockwork recovery AMD unrooted the phone. I then did the ota. So now I have ics with unlocked bootloader. It will fail the verifying stage of the update. All the original files of the previous version of the update your flashing needs to be there.

Go back to latest available stock version. (Rooted with Superuser.apk in /system/app is OK) & Keep your Custom Recovery or reflash it.
Put a Superuser flashable zip on your sdcard.
When you have the OTA update.zip somewhere on your sdcard ( Copied from /cache) boot into custom recovery
Flash update.zip manually and directly after it flashes, flash the Superuser.zip right on top of update.
Wipe /cache
Reboot
Download Joeykrim's flash_image gui from the market.
Place custom-recovery.img on root of sdcard. (Rename it to recovery.img)
Flash custom recovery in flash_image gui
Change permissions of /system/etc/install-recovery.sh & /system/recovery-from-boot.p to "000"
I would just wait till ics is out and then youll find a flashable .zip here on xda and you can just flash that like you did with the matr1x kernel... not shure if full wipe would be nescesary but if yes then you can backup your apps through titanium or sth similar!

Edit: what i actually wanted to say that theres no need to go back to stock now because you can get the update over xda and just flash that!
while we're on the topic....would editing the build.prop keep an OTA from installing? For example, LCD density??
Why not just wait like one day for someone to post a rooted stock ICS rom? I am sure one of our wonderful devs here will be all over it. It will probably show up in one of those REF threads pretty quickly. Then you don't have to mess around with setting root up again. That's what I always did with my EVO Shift so I'll probably do it with this phone as well.
If you hadn't modified your build.prop or removed system apps, you'll just need to flash the stock kernel. Theres no need to flash the whole stock Rom.
What if your bootloader is unlocked and nothing else. Will it get the OTA?
Question since we on the subject when will ics be released for our phones or is it still unknown as to when is gonna be released?

Bad Binary

Hi all,
I Know my Thunderbolt is rooted correctly because I am able to use certian rooted only apps. But when I go into superuser to update binaries it tells me that
1. It cannot gain root access
2. It says the new binaries are bad
3. Overall fail.
There was a similar post on rootzwiki about this, and in that post was a su.zip file that i manually placed in the /system/bin which i overwrote the existing. Still giving me the bad binaries error etc... is there something I am doing wrong? or a new fix avail??
Thanks
PS...also while I'm here i posted this on rootzwiki also but no avail...somewhat on the same lines as what i posted above but with more info about the bootloader.
Thanks
I just picked up a preowned thunderbolt....
currently :
Android Version - 2.3.4
HTC Sense Verison - 2.1
Software Number - 2.11.605.9
.
HBOOT - 6.04.1002
Radio - 1.4.8.00.0.930.w_3
just wondering if this is the most current, and root-able\ s-off friendly software for the thunderbolt. It was already rooted and revolutionary.io hence the bootloader saying so. But for some reason no matter what, I cannot perform a full TB Restore, and cannot successfully update SU binaries ( tried the suFixer on the market..and tried manually putting the file in /system/bin/su . It either says cannot gain root access or insuffiant privileges errors. I can't for the life of me figure wtf is going on. I've never had such difficulty/[problems rooting and customizing any other HTC ( or android phone) before. can anyone help

New OTA Update

So I just got some type of OTA update from Verizon, I have an unlocked bootloader as well as rooted. Can I install this update or will it brick? The file is under /cache/fota/update.zip 30.92mb. This is because you all most likely have a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM and it can only install on stock recovery. If you freeze sdm1.0 it wont keep asking you to update

[Q] phone still not rooted after running all-in-one toolkit

I ran the all-in-one toolkit v2.0 to root my at&t htc one x but my phone is showing not rooted. I followed all the steps and successfully unlocked the bootloader then proceeded to flash the TWRP recovery. When I try to run apps that require root my phone says it's not rooted. I downloaded RootChecker app from the playstore and it says phone is not rooted. Did I miss a step or do something wrong?
Did you flash the super user application? Perm root.... Just because you unlocked the bootloader doesnt mean you've gained full and permanent root access.
Many roms now come with that permission/app bundled inside. The toolkit has that function and I believe its the in the bottom right portion of the kit.

Would unlocking the bootloader and flashing supersu from recovery work on the new Rogers OTA Jelly Bean update? Any side effects, such as not being able to do another OTA update, etc.?
I intend on staying with the stock rom (Sense, etc), but want to remove some of the carrier bloatware, and boot logo.

I think there's only one way to find out at the moment. You'd be our canary in the mine, on this one. I haven't seen any threads for Rogers JB root/unlock. Might be a while before there's an exploit. Let us know if you come across anything or try it out yourself.
And rooting and unlocking doesn't necessarily prevent you from getting OTA updates. Although,a future OTA is likely to cause lost root.

I just got my m8 and want to s-off but I'm traveling and won't be able to figure that out until I'm back on my pc next week. The update keeps prompting me to take it. Is it safe to do so? Sorry if this was already answered trying to figure out the best way to browse with tapatalk.
I don't have root or anything yet...

I used Firewater's method for permanent root, s-off and custom recovery. If I allow my phone to update will I mess things up or lose root?
Same boat here... s-off, permanent root, TWRP
The update to 1.55 downloaded but when I tried to let it install it just rebooted my phone into TWRP and that was it. Rebooted back to system and I'm still on the 1.12.605.11 software. Checking software update status shows "Result: Update Failed,410"
N00bs. Lol. You need a stock recovery to flash an OTA. Also, I am s-off and I had a flashback to a stock recovery to flash the OTA . Everything is still fine and then I flashed back to a custom recovery no problem

Totally a noob here, How do you flash to a stock recovery?

You guys need the stock recovery in order to install the OTA. It won't work with a custom recovery, it'll just boot to the custom recovery and not do anything. You can install the OTA with s off and root but you still need the stock recovery. You install the stock recovery the same way as you did the custom. Adb -> flashboot flash recovery *path of recovery*.

There are also videos on YouTube on flashing recoveries to the m8 if you need more help.

You can install the update, and when you have the chance you can s-off using the weaksauce/supersu/firewater method. I picked up a new M8 a couple nights ago and took the update, and afterwards did the temproot/firewater method and it worked just fine. Hope this helps.
I flashed stock recovery and tried the OTA and it failed twice. I can't seem to get it on my phone through any of the methods for some reason.
In order to install update, you need to have STOCK recovery and STOCK Rom....NOT debloated or with mods....STOCK.
Again, you need STOCK recovery using a STOCK Rom.
If you have modified the system in anyway, it WONT work until you put it back to STOCK.

^you can have bloatware frozen and it'll work, just can't be removed.

No need to take ota. Ota us our enemy. Lol. The ota has been pulled an you can simply flash the firmware an that's half of the ota an then flash a stock Rom based off 1.55 or install the backup that was posted of a pure stock 1.55 Rom. After those 2 things you will have the full ota. New radios everything.. flashing a stock recovery taking ota flashing back is not needed.

Thanks guys it was annoying having that update keep popping up and no real computer to lookup info or soff. As for getting updates after roming the phone usually just wait for authors to incorporate the updates. But I did not realize you can't have two recoveries like you can on Motorola phones which is good to know.

New to android here.
I rooted the device with WeakSauce and use Firewater for S-Off. I didn't flash any custom recoveries. I did freeze some apps with Titanium Backup. If I do the OTA, 1) will it work? and 2) will it remove my root and/or s-off?

For clarification, after flashing the stockrecovery.img you posted and installing the update, there should be no problem flashing back to CWM recovery after the fact?
Thank you for your help and your time!

All your big words confuse me...will it work with custom rom's and recoveries?
I don't remember ever having to have stock recovery and stock rom for my old DNA to take an update. Normally devs would update their rom with the updates and all we had to do was fastboot flash the new radio.

So I flash the file you linked to, thank you but when I try to get into recovery I get a red triangle with an exclamation point in it. Seemed pretty straight forward.
