[Q] I might have bricked my TF101G finally - Please help! - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK. This is an older TF101G, which was running ICS, but needed to go back to stock.
My first mistake was to follow a thread which installed the stock WW HC image, but with an US stock recovery. There, I could not get updates.
I tried to fix this by rooting this monster with nachoroot. I rooted successfully. My second mistake was to use RomManager to install CWM. Though it says it has the right image, this does not work. You can boot into it, but it cannot mount the sdcard, nor can it install any zip. The machine still boots into ICS.
To recover from this, I did my third mistake. I followed an advice to insert a blob from this web page with dd to mmcblk0p4. The blob is the boot blob from CM9.1. However, now this boot blob cannot start the ICS system. It hangs at the boot logo. I can still boot into CWM, however.
To recover from this, I tried booting as far as it goes, and starting adb shell. The screen is showing a boot logo of the Transformer at that time. But the su command now longer works and hangs the shell. This beats me. Otherwise I would have tried the blob from the ICS version I installed.
Is there any way to get out of this mess?
Update:
I tried re-rooting with nachoroot. But trying to push nachoroot.bin to /data/local fails because of "permission denied". Pushing to /mnt/sdcard works. But I am not permitted to chmod to 777 there.

I solved this for the moment
Sorry, I solved it myself. Glad to see that I am still faster than the people here
I followed an advice in a posting to install the universal drivers on Windows. Simply download the drivers and updated the device drives in the hardware manager. Then I boot into CWM. There adb shell magically goes to a root shell. Probably because I rooted the phone before. Then I used dd to push the blob of the original android firmware to mmcblk0p4. The device now reboots into HC!
It remains to find out how to get a working CWM recovery to this device, so I can put an ICS ROM on it.

Use PERI.
It will push a working CWM via ADB.
Works with the TF101g
Be advised the version it uses only seers the internal storage to flash ROMs.

Yeah, thanks, I used this tool to flash a working recovery when I was on ICS.
Now I am on rooted HC and a useless CWM. I could use the recoveryblob in the PERI tool and do the same dd trick I did with the boot blob. But I want to make sure this recovery will cooperate with my HC system. At least there should be a way to revert.

I don't see why it wouldn't work with HC.

Experience?

There are users which report on the PERI thread about problems with HC.

No Ideas
So nobody knows how to update my Transformer? The remaining problem is that I have HC (stock) running with a disfunctional CWM recovery.
Maybe I will live with it for a while and open a new thread later.

Solved, I hope!
Ok. I solved this too. I found TWPR 2.2 on the net and took the recoveryblob out of it. Then copied this to /dev/block/mmcblk0p4 with
dd if=recoveryblob of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4
Reboot, and got my new recovery. I hope I can install and decent ROM now.

I was running 3.0.1 unlocked/rooted, Tiamat's 1.4.1 kernel. I followed the steps to update to 3.1 from here, and had no issues what so ever. This was earlier this week, and today I was going to run fix permissions in recovery. I used Quick Boot (also tried Reboot to Recovery in ROM Manager) to boot to recovery, and I got to the Android with the exclamation point...
I tried sending the modified 3.0.2.8 recovery listed in the Dev Forums using fastboot commands, and everything went smooth with no errors, but still got the Android/exclamation point.
I tried reflashing recovery via ROM Manager, and it wouldn't pop up anything, so I uninstalled/reinstalled, and the flash of recovery worked. Boom! Recovery is back! So I can do what I need (run fix permissions), and rebooted the device.
I try to reboot into Recovery again, back to Android with exclamation point. Any thoughts here as to why I must do this, and thoughts to what I can try to make Recovery "stay"?
Thanks!

Reflash cmw afterward and it should stay.

Use your computer to do this:
adb shell rm /system/recovery-from-boot.p
adb shell rm /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
or alternately, you can use a root file manager such as root explorer to remove the files (I personally just renamed mine so they wouldn't be recognized. I don't like burning bridges).
Re-flash cmw afterward and it should stay.
Thanks! That worked, you the man! I renamed them as well, as I don't want to burn bridges either.

[Q] No adb, no CWM, no root since .24 Help!

Here goes:
I have a TF101 WW with root and CWM. I recently had a bootloop problem, which I managed to fix with roach's version of CWM. Then the next update from Asus came out (9.2.1.24), which failed to install, apparently because CWM is in the way.
I then waited for the downloadable update to be available on Asus' website, I temporarily unrooted with OTA Rootkeeper and installed the zip through CWM.
Upon reboot, everything seemed fine, version checked out, until I tried rerooting with Rootkeeper. Rootkeeper apparently lost its protected backup of su and couldn't reroot.
So I tried rebooting to CWM to install Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip and get my root back, only to see the dead android logo with a red warning sign.
Next I tried connecting through adb, which has always worked before... until now.
When I insert the usb in my pc, I don't even get the usual 'new device' sound and the adb devices list remains empty. Same in apx mode.
Any ideas? My device works just fine, except for apps that require root, booting into recovery and connecting through adb. I really would like these things fixed if possible...

OTA Rootkeeper only work when you let it OTA update. When you flashed the firmware from Asus, you unrooted and restore stock recovery, that's why you see the Android with red ! mark.
See if you can get into system/bin if there's a su there try and copy it to system/xbin and see what happen (hopefully you still have partial root).
No such luck. Su is gone from both bin and xbin.
So I gather I can't boot to recovery because it has been restored to stock recovery. Bummer.
Some additional questions [semi-noob alert]:
If updating through OTA doesn't work with CWM, and updating through CWM removes root and CWM, how am I supposed to update?
If restoring to stock and unrooting is that simple, why does Wolf go through so much trouble?
Why did I lose usb-connectivity?
If adb doesn't work, is there a way to reroot my Transformer?
For future cases, once I am rooted again, is it possible to put a copy of su on an external microsd, give it the right permissions and stuff, and keep that as a backup to re-acquire root in similar cases? Or can su only work on /system?
I know it's a lot of questions, I'd be happy with answers to any one of them
-you update by waiting for a cwm flashable zip from one of the dev.
-wolfs thread has nothing to do with unrooting, his is downgrading to a rootable version or striaght pushing a recovery to flash su binary plus su zip
-some peoples report loosing usb when updating to ics, try going into system settings, storage, usb pc connection and see if mtp is check off
-for adb try another driver
sorry for all lower case, some reason shift button not working on my mac any more.
Yeah, sorry your going to have to re-root
On the bright side, you can use NvFlash now if you're inclined too xD

No, because microsd is mounted with nosuid.
You must place the backup on a filesystem which is mounted without nosuid.
Thx for the replies. Now I understand how I got into this situation. Still don't know how to get out of it, though
Key to the solution seems to be to get adb working.
I enabled usb debugging on the tablet, checked MTP off in storage settings and removed and reinstalled asus sync. I tried connecting both with asus sync running and with asus sync disabled on the pc. I made sure to shut off the splashtop streamer service.
I tried this on my usual pc (where adb used to work before update) and on a seperate laptop.
I took pretty good care of my connection cable so far, so I strongly suspect it is still in working order.
Result is nothing at all. No notification sound upon connecting, no tray popup discovering new hardware, no device in asus sync, no devices in adb, no usb debugging icon on transformer.
(EDIT: I lied. Result is that the transformer screen turns on upon insertion and removal of the usb plug in the pc.)
Anything else I can try?
@baseballfanz: what exactly do you mean by 'for adb try another driver'. Where can I find alternate drivers?
EDIT: I dual-boot W7 and Ubuntu, how do I go about trying to connect with adb from Ubuntu?
Hi.
I assume you're running windows.
Kill the process "asusUPCTLoader.exe" and try adb again.
If you need to reroot, flash CWM with nvflash, then flash SU from cwm.
Wheelie has been released and allows for SBK2 (b70+) devices to use nvflash.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1676845
You will need a linux virtual machine/livecd though.
Ubuntu doesn't need drivers, just download the android-sdk and put it somewhere, it'll have executable adb in it.

no luck, same thing. Also, I tried reinstalling the android-sdk platform-tools to get the latest and greatest adb, but no dice.
Tried getting adb to work in Ubuntu also, but no luck.

Ok, I went to that Wheelie site, looked at the instructions and didn't understand anything about it. What exactly is nvflash? Do I need adb for that or (as I understand it) is it more low-level and doesn't require drivers and such?
Obviously that link is for users who have a basic knowledge of what nvflash is, what it can do and how to do it.
Both nvflash and wheelie require access to the usb device with Vendor ID 0×955 and Product ID 0×7820. If you are unable to set this up yourself, it’s recommend to run the tools with “sudo” or as the root user.
All usage requires booting your tablet into APX mode by connecting it to USB, turning it off and turn it back on while holding Volume Up!
Included scripts (full reflash)
SBKv1
./reflash_sbkv1.sh
SBKv2
./reflash_sbkv2.sh
In order to use this, you will need to download a full update from ASUS for your SKU and unpack the “blob” file from within the zip using the provided blobunpack tool. We recommend sticking to 100% stock blobs for this step and then root afterwards!

Help...

I had been running a ROM since June and everything was working fine. So I go see my Trojans lose :crying: to ND and came up depressed so I decided I was going to update it to something newer since I liked some of the new features. So I download a rom and copy over to my tablet, boot into recovery and flash. I do all the wipes etc and reboot.
I get the Asus splash screen with Androidroot 9.4.3.30r01 in the top left corner..
I can get into fastboot and I can get into recovery. (CWM-Based Recovery v5.5.0.4)
So here lies the problem. I can't copy anything to the internal SD of the tablet to flash something else.
I've tried to follow a few thing on other posts about how to copy files via fastboot but when i try it tells me insufficient memory.
So what I want basically is help getting back up and running. Any of you Super Gurus able to help?
Have you tried putting a file on a removable sd card via a computer, then booting into CWM and flashing it that way?
Search for quick adb pusher here on XDA. DL it. Go in to recovery. connect tab to pc, run ADB pusher and see if it finds your TF300.
If yes you should be able to push every file you like on your Tablet.
Try flash it.
But there were already so many Users that had problems with CWM so 1st try to flash TWRP via fastboot and see if that works.
wow

You can use twrp to flash from either internal or external sdcard. I use external always and only keep a safety backup on internal.
Also twrp includes a file manager which you can use to copy from external to internal if you feel better that way.
I forgot twrp also includes a terminal which can be handy as well.
I totally agree. TWRP is the way to go if you can get it flashed through fastboot. I originally tried CWM but had issues with it making backups. I flashed TWRP with fastboot and no more problems.
The reason I mentioned trying CWM 1st was because you said that you already are running it. If you can get TWRP installed, I would definitely recommend it.

No problem and I'm that you got it flashed with no problems. TWRP is definitely the way to go. Don't get me wrong, CWM is nice to have as far as recovery goes but the UI in TWRP is so much better. Now if only we can get it for the phone I'm using.

Bricked? Cant boot past Asus Screen

Hi guys, Im having a little Problem with my tf300. I've been running Baked 6 rom for a couple months and saw that version 7 was released which is full 4.2.1. Backed up, wiped, flashed, and rebooted.
Got stuck at Asus splash screen. unable to turn device off, it just turns right back on to the splash screen. I am able to hold volume down + power to get into TWRP recovery.
Restored back up, rebooted and still stuck on ASUS screen. Tried another backup with same result
Tried re-downloading rom copying it to external memory card and flashing again, still stuck at asus screen.
I am so lost here, not sure if i should throw this thing out the window, or get on my knees and pray.
any help is greatly appreciated.
I have googled the problem and have seen similar issues, but not anybody that can access recovery and still has the problem.

Are you sure to be still rooted ?
Simply question
If you aren't still root, just root again before to try some rom install

sorry for the delay - thanks for the reply.
I dont know how to tell if im rooted from recovery.
So just went ahead and flashed the root file i found here:
http://www.androidgadgematic.com/2012/10/root-asus-transformer-pad-tf300-install-cwm.html
flashed Baked 7 and gapps again with same result.
(however i noticed at first reboot the asus screen shows a quick blue loading bar under center logo. then nothing.)
rebooted into TWRP - wiped - flashed root.zip again - restored backup.......asus screen.
another thing i noticed was when i try to install (flash) anything, it says no md5 found or if i select "force md5 check" it fails.
im a seasoned novice. I've gotten myself out of some sticky jams. but im totally lost here....

The SKU versions on the asus firmware page, are as follows:
- US = USA
- CN = China
- TW = Taiwan
- WW = Worldwide
- DE = Germany
- JP = Japan
- TB = Belgium, Turkey, Luxembourg
But you can flash US or WW, they are compatible

This is normal. The stock blob contains stock recovery and is flashed over the recovery you have in place.
Time to reflash your twrp.

Flash the latest twrp (2.4.1.0). There were issues of using 4.2 and custom recoveries. That was the reason for the last two versions of twrp.
All custom roms here I have checked are pre rooted so the only time I flash root is with a stock rom.
If you were not already using twrp 2.4.1.0 then reflash your stock rom. Earlier versions might not flash the roms properly for 4.2. We need to get working first then you can flash your rom choice.
I hope your version of twrp is less than 2.4.1.0 because if not I'm lost at the moment. I'll be thinking and searching while you play.
Good Luck!
Note: Sorry I should have said twrp 2.4.1.0 JellyBean!

How are you getting the roms onto your device to flash them, the TF300 doesn't have any external memory. Unless there is a way to push the file to the internal sdcard via fastboot, that I'm looking into right now, I dont understand how you are able to flash anything besides .img files or an update.zip.

I apparently don't have drivers for adb for my tf300t. I have no problem with fastboot. I am able to successfully flash the recovery, but I am unable to push any data to my sdcard.
Without being able to fully boot my tablet, I'm not sure I can even get adb to work? If I install drivers for adb, won't I lose my fastboot capabilities that I currently have? My tablet shows up as a fastboot device in my device manager, would I just open it's properties and select new drivers for it?
My next idea is to get ahold of the system.img, boot.img and recovery.img from a rom to flash from fastboot. I can't seem to find these inside any roms I've downloaded yet, where would I find them? I am thinking I would prefer the latest stock asus rom if possible. I've downloaded the rom from Asus website, unzipped it and no .img files in it. I've also downloaded the rooted stock rom from xda here and also no .img files inside it. Does this even sound plausible, to flash those .img files from inside fastboot to make the tablet boot up?
Edit: Small side question, what exactly is "-i 0x0B05" that for? I seem to be able to accomplish flashing things without that small bit in my commands for example I can just type \fastboot flash recovery recovery.img and that works just fine. So what is that small code?

I'll try to help but this is a hard one to fix. You have to be willing to keep chipping away till I give or we have success. It can be very frustrating.

-i 0x0B05 is an identification provided by google for Asus android products. Each vendor is provided with a number. My tablet does not require it either but some do so we just suggest it to everyone.
I'm skipping everything else you asked for the moment.
Prior to flashing CWM were you on JB or ICS?
Either way we need to replace your non working CWM with twrp (2.4.1.0). Here is the link if you were on JB then flash JB if you were on ICS flash ICS.

Hey I appreciate your help man. I was on CM10 JB 4.1.1, but that was before they required us to have the JB Bootloader, which is where I started to mess up at. I've had CWM since I was running CM10, so when I wiped data, it wasn't from a stock recovery, but I'm guessing that doesn't make a difference. Anyways right now, I'm waiting for the battery to charge up a bit, let it die out last night. I will post as soon as I get TWRP flashed.

Good. While waiting you can download the latest ICS stock 9.4.3.30. You will find it in post 3 of this thread.
So I've got an interesting snag now. I've flashed TWRP 4 times, it never takes. When I boot into recovery, it's still CWM. When I use fastboot, it says it's sending and writing are both ok, but when I reboot into recovery it's still CWM 5.5.0.4.
Edit: I even went as far as to try using the JB version of TWRP, because I was on JB before, just not the 4.2.1 that requires JB bootloader. Still gives me the same result.
Edit 2: I have the stock boot.blob also I just tried flashing, same thing, still got CWM after flashing the blob.

Your recovery has to be the same as your bootloader. Don't mistake JB in rom name and JB bootloader. They are two different things and if your bootloader is ICS then we need ICS.
OK. Let's see what we have to work with now. Boot into CWM, plug your tablet into your pc and check for adb access.(adb devices)

[Q] [HELP] TF101 Loop while starting

Hi all !
First my apology for the reason of those words. I'm an Android-noob
Well I've Rooted my TF101 with EasyFlasher, it's a good thing, installing RogueXM Touch v1.5.0-R1 Recovery.
I launched an AOKP JB milestone 1 and it was well installed.
But I did a mistake, I didn't done a NAND backup.
Now when I try running my TF101, it starts, and run the AOKP JB Milestone 1, but no keyboard, no configuration, well I'm stuck there. Anyway I reboot in recovery trying install another rom pushing file into it by ADB.
Nothing works
I can't reflash Stock rom, EasyFlasher tall me that's ok but when I boot the TF101 I'm always return under AOKP
I don't know who could I flash the Stock rom to be able to repair this $*%£ tablet
If someone has a clue ?
Thank you
[Q] means you should post it in Q&A.
This is the development forum.
sorry I just realize I'm not in the good forum
Since you cannot boot, there are really only 2 options:
Use ADB when in recovery to unbrick (Push new ROM to flash, use the dd command to install a different recovery) - also, be sure to update to the Naked Drivers for ADB for it to work best.
Use APX mode and EasyFlasher or NVFlash to push the stock ROM or a different recovery.
I HIGHLY recommend using TWRP for recovery, it can see the internal and external microSD (FAT32 only).
Moved to correct board.
