[Q] Using titanium backup to restore apps & GPS problems - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello all, I've been androiding it all up in my phones since the OG motorola droid, and I've always had issues using Titanium to restore apps. From same phone, but from different versions of the ROMS. It'll restore 5-6 apps fine, then get stuck for infinity. I change from the Auto direct (recommended setting) to the other auto-indirect and still have issues. I then have to set it to manual, where I have to click on install for each app, and then done once it's installed, a huge pain in the backside for 180+ apps.
Other issue is I never seem to get quick GPS locks, no matter what rom I use. I've used FasterGPS from the play store, GPS status, even changed where/how the phone gets the current time to get it from different NTP services and still it can sometimes be 10 seconds, but more often than not it'll sit without a lock for 20 minutes or more. Any thoughts? I'm currently running JellyBeans build10 with the I535VRBLK1 modem. HALP please

Ah, forgot the other question, when restoring a clockworkmod backup should I format system and all the steps that are done before flashing a new ROM, or does the restore process make that unneeded?
Thanks

All you have to do is restore the backup that you want, nothing else.
As for restoring apps, you can do advanced recovery, data and it will put them all back on there for you. You do have to stay TW to TW and ASOP to ASOP.
As far as GPS, not sure what to tell you there. I have read some success stories on here and some were not so lucky.

That's what I thought, and what I'd always done, but wasn't sure if maybe I'd been doing it wrong, thus the restoring titanium and gps problems.

hmmm, Im not sure about titanium backup never had issues there, but I had a severe issue with the gps. I spent about 2 to 3 weeks trying to work out the problem, I would not get a lock period. Finally I decided to try and flash the .pit file in odin and that worked wonders. Im guessing a corrupted partition or something? no idea but my gps works perfect after that.

[Q] NEWB mistake

New to android here
Rooted phone cause of battery life
I have AntTek App Manager
Watchdog Lite
and other cool/fun apps
Now, I did an update on my apps the other day and looked at all the apps that are currently running (got obsessed with killing apps so i can extend my battery life).
All these new things were running (didnt want to touch them until I googled them).
I froze FlexProvider 1.0.0 which wasnt a good idea. Rebooted the phone and still not functioning the way it used to... Click on browser and I have to force close it. I defrosted FlexProvider and browser still isnt working... another kicker, Im getting no data connection as well on tmo. I connect WiFi and I get everything, except browser.....
Now, before I do a factory reset... is there a way to fix this before I do that drastic route (that is if that would work). Secondly, i use shopsavvy and I dont want to lose the things I scanned and saved. I've been lookin online wondering where that gets saved JUST in case the phone has to be brought back to OEM...
Any guidance or assistance would be greatly appreciated....
thank you
forgot to mention... when i reboot the phone, in the beginning upon boot up com.lge.omadmclient has stopped exptedly comes up when you unlock the phone
Thaw the apps you froze and it may recover just fine. FlexProvider is required to transfer data to and from the device, hence the browser FC and no data connection.
U should be fine but you shouldve done some research on this forum before just freezing apps

Done that, still no go. Researched app before I froze but did not see anything about it doing this (saw a post about it outside of this site, sorry).
Any other suggestions? Would you guys know where shopsavvy saves the scanned images
Not too good at troubleshooting here. The only help I can give at this point is to flash ClockworkMod and restore the rooted stock nandroid image in the development section.

Unless there is a ROM there (not image). Then you could simply flash over it. I would format /system before you do that if you can find one (plus wipe cache and dalvek).
thank you all
I have decided to factory wipe it. Too scared to go through all of that and possibly brick the phone..
I want to thank you all for your input though...

Just got root, advise on a couple of things!

Rooted last night with Buddy's and so for everything seems to be working. I am assuming it was a success. I installed Titanium Backup and it allows me to remove the ATT bloatware etc...Is there anything I need to check to verify I am rooted and if so, correctly? I went through all my apps that I restored from ""MyBackup" app and everything is working.
I guess the next step is to learn how to use the installed ROM Manager and Superuser. Not sure what it is all involved but willing to learn. I am using Buddy's stock ROM that came with the program. Any negatives using this ROM? Before trying others, I have to figure out how to flash a ROM. I will be looking for a ROM without bloatware and sense. I use launcher pro and will stick with it. I prefer a smooth fast and solid performance.
I think my first mod would be to change my battery indicator in my notification bar and customize this area a bit. Any suggestions were to get started?
Thanks
If you want fast and stable w/ being senseless, di11i's Gingerbeast is as good as it gets. If you want fast, stable w/ a lil more tweaking capabilities, CM7 is for you.
I use both on a regular basis and each has their pros.
Tx
There are guides on every rom thread for flashing roms. If you don't do well with reading instructions and are more hands on I found this video and it helped me the first time.

Good job mayne. I used ATTN's method and the WiFi did not work with the ROM in that kit. I posted here asking about it right about the point where you are, waited 1/2 hour, said eff it, and flashed one of the custom roms from the Dev section, which fixed the issue.
I noticed my data speeds were not as good as stock, and I live in a backhauled area and was getting >7Mbps down stock. I noticed I didn't have the latest ATT OTA radio, so I read some more in the radio thread, and flashed the latest ATT radio and RIL's, and the data speeds I was accustomed to returned.
The ROM I flashed is really really nice. IT is Sense based, like the stock AT&T. Some of the ROM's people will suggest are basic Android UI, while others are Sense based. I don't mind the Sense. It is technically a memory hog, and I only use one of the Scenes provided, but I like it. There are many ROM's to chose from that are basically stable. I never got stock GPS to perform to my expectations. However, the first ROM I flashed combined with the latest OTA radio amazing fixed the effin GPS!! Wow it's really responsive now.
My first ROM had/has a couple bugs. One was taken care of with re-flashing the ROM I chose again. The ROM I have now has one really small minor bug. I am living with it, as stock also had more major issues (GPS). The bug is associated with the kernel. This is another thing one can flash and change. I tried another kernel out vs. the ROM, but decided t had other variables with the performance I was experiencing, while other posters here love the optional kernel. Choices choices...
Be careful with Titanium back up. In general, do NOT use it to back up system data as part of the ROM flashing process. Usually flashing different ROM's from different dev's require full system wipe, like you did with the rooting process. It looks tempting to use, but multiple issues are discerned by reading the thread if this selection is used in TB. I suggest just using it for App backup, and if a problem with the flashing, revert to your Nandroid backup of your last functional ROM. Learn about that too....
Anyway good luck. I doubt youare going to stay with whatever ROM is in Bubby's kit...so just trying to give you a few pointers...since you asked , and because I like this sentence in your OP", "Not sure what it is all involved but willing to learn." yes you will...the radio thread, the one stickied page of this forum, are invaluable places to start and bookmark...

A few things that will make your flashing easier, because once you flash one custom ROM, you will end up flashing 10...
Create a Nandroid backup before flashing a new ROM. To create a Nandroid backup, follow these steps:
1. Get into Clockwork recovery. You can do this one of two ways: Go into ROM Manager and select boot into recovery. The other way is to boot the device while holding down the volume key. After the device boots, you'll see an option for Recovery. Select that. Also, some ROMs allow you to go into recovery by holding down the power button then selecting recovery.
2.Once in Clockwork recovery, select backup and restore, then backup.
The backup will be stored on your SD card in the \clockwork\backup directory.
This type of backup has EVERYTHING in it (except the radio). If you restore from this backup, and boot your device, it will be exactly as it was when you backed up--all apps, data, settings, etc.
I recommend backing up the backup directory to your PC. The backups are pretty big.
You'll end up with a whole collection of backups (I have about 10.), one for each ROM you've flashed. If you decide one day (or hour ) that you want to use a different ROM, all you have to do is copy the backup from your PC to your SD card and then restore from within recovery (wipe data/cache/dalvik first ).
...
Do not restore data using Titanium Backup if the backup was performed on a different ROM. It can really screw things up.
...
A lot of people ask about backing up and restoring SMS and MMS. The BEST way I have found is via Handcent sms. This is a great free replacement for the stock messaging app. It has an option to backup and restore both SMS and MMS messages. It work really, really well. The backup and restore does have a cost though. I think 3.99 a year.
To me, it's completely worth it. Using this with a Nandroid restore, and I can be up on a new ROM in 5 minutes, with all data up to date.

or you could just use GO SMS Pro (its free) to do the sms/mms backup restore....or an app called SMS backup+ (free) and it sends a copy of everything to your gmail so you dont have to restore all that stuff, its all in your gmail, mms and all
GO SMS PRO also gives the ability to back up messages and restore all messages... it's free app.

Thanks, I am glad yall said something about the TB not backing up data. I was getting ready to pull the trigger on flashing. Doing a Nandroid backup right now. Already have the zip file loaded in my phone.

Hey isn't the ROM in buddy's kit froyo? If you want gingerbread you're gonna have to flash a custom ROM...
I am sending this thread with the WiFi hotspot teathering to my PC, that I opted not to enable stock because I have an unlimited data plan and I think paying 20 or whatever they want is stupid. My home internet is dropping in and out this morning for some reason..wah lah! I got tethering to phone's network and internet access! Woo hoo! And jsut as fast as my home WiFi. This is exactly one of the things I had in mind when rooting this phone. This is awesome!!!! Oh but back to the OP...
Oh yeah!!!! If you flash a new ROM, or even notice with bubby's kit ROM now, that data speed is not what you expect, or doesn't work at all, check the APN settings under Settings>Wireless Networks>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names. The ROMs as flashed may not have all the settings correct. There are posts and threads about setting the proper APN's for proper AT&T network access and it's easy schmeezee. Just one little thing that took me a few minutes to figure out initially while I was getting data speed of 200kbps down vs. the 7Mbps I'm used to...

No. Do not restore the Nandroid back up. That is for if you have problems with your new ROM, and need to get to a known good restore point. It is there if you need it....start checking out your new ROM .
ok think I might have it
Rom manger
reboot in recovery
backup and restore
advanced restore
pick my download
????
Then it ask, resore boot or restore system or restore data or restore casche or restore sd-ext
I am thinking I need to pick "restore sd-ext" correct???????? to download my nabdriod backup???
Ok then backing up and re grouping
The new rom is installed, it looks nice. Now I want to reload my apps and system settings?
Using TB to restore my apps at this time. It loading.....

Please help cant receive any call

I might do something wrong. First I flashed my infuse with gtgx rom and it works like a charm for good 2 months. yesterda, I backed up my data using titanium user and I flashed it with elliots roger stock gingerbread. After I flashed elliots's stock roger gingerbread, I went to titanium back up and restore the apps. I uninstall couple apps and run a back up on titanium back up again (to clean up unused apps), but after that I could not receive any call. It will ring once and turned off and went straight to voicemail. I cannot receive any call. I can call/text/skype/browse without fail. But once someone calls my number it will ring once and straight to mailbox. I flashed it back to gtgx rom from cwm apps, and restore it with titanium back up (that I created when I was using elliot's). The problem stays. Now I cannot receive any call.
Anyone has any idea to solve this?
I appreciate it.
I would ODIN back to stock and see if that corrects your issue. Only them would I try another custom ROM. Eliminate the issue them move forward. I never assume that moving to another ROM will correct a problem I am having worth a current ROM. A clean instal helps to insure you bring no left over crap into the new ROM.
Just my humble $0.02. Hope it helps.

This should be asked in the question section.
But if you back out to the Samsung Infuse 4G forum, then do a search for your problem you'll find plenty of answers.
DO NOT ask questions in this thread.
Flash back to stock.
you already know not to post questions in the dev thread, so i'll skip the admonishing.
you restored "system data" with titanium back up - you cannot do this. it will result in the exact problems you are describing.
if you would've read the infused thread's OP thoroughly, you would know not to do this. you need to go back to stock and start over.
get in "manage applications-->all-->phone",clear data

Need Help with factory reset

Hi and thanks for reading -
I rooted my skyrocket and removed a handful of apps using titanium pro, including stock messaging, web, media player and some other things. After factory reset, I noticed those apps are still removed. I tried to restore them using titanium pro and I waited a good 45 minutes for the messaging app to restore and nothing happened, so I'm thinking something is wrong. I'd like to restore my phone to default settings, including all installed apps (as if I just bought it). Can someone point me in the direction of how this can be done? As I understand it, I need to install a custom ROM. I would also be willing to experiment with ICS releases for this device.
Any advice is appreciated
Cheers
Jesse

Yep, once you uninstall the app, it's gone.
For next time, here are a couple of tips.
1) Instead of using Titanium to uninstall an app, use the "freeze" function. Then use the phone a couple weeks and if all is golden, then go ahead and uninstall the app.
2) Always make a nandroid backup before doing anything crazy.

GO here you can download the official att rom. If you do the counter reset then flash this rom it will put your device back to stock. This wont trigger the counter. You will have to create an account hope this helps

What's a counter? Thanks for all the replies! I'm currently trying to get ICS to work on the skyrocket, but it was laggy, so I'm thinking about going for the stock after all.

The flash counter, it keeps track so Samsung knows how many times you've been naughty.
I flashed mine back to stock with help. My older thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1582357
Follow the process and everything will be back to stock. Also, after first boot. Shutdown and then bring up the recovery menu. Preform a factory reset.

Nfc driving me nuts

Along time ago I made the mistake of wiping cache, dalvik and flashing a kernel without resetting wallet. I figured I wasn't wiping data so I was good (just lazy.) I did make a backup with working wallet.
Now my Nfc will work (I've transfered songs and pics through s beam) but it sometimes greys out and won't stay on. It works than stops, reboot does not change it. If I get it back before I go to bed when I wake up its broke again.
I'm currently on Clean Rom ULE not that I think that's the problem.

make nandroid, flash stock rom, tick on NFC, restore nandroid
win. worked for me everytime.
why are you resettin wallet ever? Ive swtiched between 10ish roms and ive never reset anything. it works everytime no issues
Do you get a box that says "unfortunately nfc has stopped"? I used to get that and finally fixed it by flashing back to the stock rom and restoring data from my old rom so I didn't lose anything. Fixed the problem for me and didn't lose any apps or how my home screen was set up.

Ya it works than stops. I know what your saying just like on aosp. Flash stock click it on flash again. I don't know. I remember reading about how the "secure element" in the Nfc chip could lock up but if that's the case how have I used it at all? Anyway I appreciate the help. I've had enough for the moment.

I was using Twrp file manager in recovery and noticed the NFC Apk. Had the VRLF stock radio after it. So I flashed back from the new blk jb leak. That seems to have fixed it. I tried to take a screenshot of the apk in root explorer but it doesn't list the baseband after the apk. like it did in twrp. Maybe I'm crazy as I'm sure one has nothing to do with the other but why was it listed like that in twrp file manager?
Edit it wasn't twrp it was settings/apps
