Hello,
Just got the Rogers version on stock ICS. I'd like to know if one of the following is possible, please:
Get an Odin flashable CWM with OpenRecoveryScript so I can dump CM and GApps, use Goo-Manager and have it wipe etc. for me as sadly recovery doesn't talk?
Some other method that doesn't involve trying to navigate recovery with no sight, something like Rom Manager or a full odin flashable CM?
Failing that, get a recent version of CWM/TWRP with button navigation and info on button presses to go from stock ICS to CM?
Don't have anyone trusty around with working eyes, so I've got to do it myself if possible. The default install method is great, but the odin version of CWM linked to doesn't support OpenRecoveryScript nor the updator script without manual work on the device in recovery as far as I understand it.
If these already exist I do apologize. I didn't come across them in the searches I've done. Any help is appreciated.
If you're visually impaired, then TWRP isn't the right recovery for you . "OpenRecoveryScript" is another name for TWRP. CWM can be navigated by the volume buttons (even the latest touch ones can) but TWRP cannot. To flash the custom recovery, all you have to do to your device is boot it into download mode. The rest you can do on Odin.
Once you're in CWM, the chooser thing will be on the top option, "reboot system". Under that (one click down) is "install .zip from SD". After that is "wipe data/factory reset". Under that is "wipe cache", then "mounts and storage", and last but not least, "advanced".

Thanks for the description of CWM's interface. I think that'll be useful.
The ORS I was looking at was this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31093552&postcount=344
I was thinking if I could get a version 14.2.1 or greater flashable in Odin, I could then use Goo-Manager in ICS, create a script that would wipe the caches, install CM and the Gapps. But I should also be able to do that with the older existing Odin flashable CWM now that I have the description of how it works.
Again, thanks.
Wow, if everyone were as self sufficient and ready to learn as you, this forum would be a much better place. I hope you've gotten everything worked out, if not, let me know if you have any more questions and I'll see if I can't help answer them for you.

I did get it to work, after I figured out CWM has a whole lot more "no" options than "yes", and then having to ADB force update Talkback.
But in the end, I've got Cyanogen 10 up and running.
Thanks for the help and resources.

Hi. My name is Shaun, and yes this is my first post here ... I would like to say this is an awesome forum full of information. Thanks for being here.
I'll start off with where I am at with my phone, and ultimately, what I want to do, then I will roll with a few questions (actually a lot of questions).
I will give you my phone stats and info to start off with. Some of it may not be pertinent. (All of this is what came out of the box, and I haven't done anything to this phone besides gain su access to it through superoneclick)
-Samsung Galaxy S (Mesmerize through US Cellular)
-Hardware v I500.04
-Firmware v 2.2.1
-Kernel v 2.6.32.9
I have read through the glossary, the stickies, and a few other threads as well. I'm looking to flash a new ROM, of course.
Now with the questions and calls for layman's explanations...
1. My friend, Adam, told me that the next step for me is to "Download ROM Manager and run a back up". I read in a thread this is a no-no, and that I need to get CVM Red Recovery (I saw it in both zip and tar formats). Once I download it, what is the next step? Do I put the zip file on my SD card and boot into the factory recovery and get it there? Do I download "odin" and load it that way? What is the advantage or disadvantage of either method? It seems a bit unclear to me.
2. With the particular ROMs, I read that these packages will sometimes include the kernels. Are these in separate files and need to be flashed separately? If so, how do I know which kernel package matches a particular ROM, if I am even making any sense right now?
3. After putting CVM on my phone, how would one get back to stock?
Conceptually, I think I am missing a bit on how all of this works and the inner workings of a droid, and I'm one that tends to learn these things through diving in it. The fear of "bricking" my precious lifeline to the world is keeping my butthole clinched and myself afraid to make the next move.
First off, welcome. You will find the answers to almost all of your questions in the following stickied threads. Doing your own research and reading a LOT is the best way to get yourself comfortable and ready for rooting. Keep in mind, the only person that can correct anything you screw up is you so make sure you have a good understanding of what you're doing BEFORE you do it. Oh, and don't use ROM Manager. It doesn't work correctly for our phone (yet). Kernels included in Rom's don't need installed separately

new questions about CVM for mesmerize
In my search for CVM for my mesmerize... I came across this sticky thread in reference to all SCH-I500 models..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1026893
In this thread is a working modified Clockworkmod recovery that is also built to work with all three phones. To flash it, you would either need a recovery that allows you to flash a zip file, or you can flash the tar file in Odin.

Where is this said "recovery that allows you to flash a zip file"? Is this the same recovery that I can access when I hold the power and volume buttons to boot the phone? The wording sounds as if I need a "previous recovery" from another source somewhere to do this.
Also, in that same thread there is a link to the CVM needed for these phones. I see CVM3-voodoo, CVM3-voodoo blue, and CVM-voodoo purple... is the first in the list the "red recovery" I am looking for?

There's a lot of different versions of CWM (W not V btw, stands for ClockWork Mod). I believe the colored ones are the same just different colors. The first one named should work fine though. And you will flash the zips in CWM when you reboot using the "3 finger method" which I believe is what you were describing.

Using the three-finger method with the factory recovery and scroll to where it says "apply sdcard:update.zip", find the zip file in the sdcard and hit ok?

No that's an old method. Use the CWM.tar file and flash it in PDA in Odin. 3-finger method will then take you to CWM and not stock recovery.
it worked!!!
sweet it worked!!! thanks akellar...
how do you like MIUI? I see that you are running that on your phone. I gotta look through some of these roms and look at the features and screenshots.

No problem.
MIUI is awesome (I'm actually using CM7 btw, just haven't updated my sig). It is VERY different from stock though. Keep in mind there are bugs in both it and CM7 so if that's an issue for you then stick with TouchWiz based Roms (H57 would be my suggestion or PnP if you just want stripped down stock). You can find instructions and info on those Roms in their specific threads.
When trying to back up in CWM, I get an "Error while backing up boot image!" I am using CwM Voodoo Lagfix Recovery v3.0.2.8x.ti
Is there a newer version and is this a known issue?

Honestly there are so many different versions of nearly identical CWM's the version number and names no longer mean anything to me.
Download this link, unzip, pick one of the colors (all the same just different colors), install in the CWM you currently have, go to reboot recovery, it will then reboot into the update recovery and you should be good to do a backup from there.

Install - update will look for an update.zip and install that, which won't do you any good.

this what it is saying now
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.
I reboot and it is still the same version of CWM I'm running now. Should I repair permissions?
Does it matter that the lagfix conversion says yes? I know this changes the file system from what I have read?

First off, did you unzip the file I linked and pull out one of the individual files? It sounds like your trying to install the original zip which won't work. THere are 3 zip files inside the original zip.
Did you already install a Rom or Kernel? Where are you seeing lagfix coversion saying "yes?" It should only say enabled or disabled in CWM.
I saw that in the CwM recovery screen.
It is working now. I am backing up as we speak. this backup can be recovered at anytime if I can make it back to the CwM recovery screen, correct? should I download the factory rom and kernel and keep it around on my SD card?
and btw... thank you sooooo much for helping me out.

As long as your on the same file format (i.e. not on CM7, MIUI) you will be able to restore that file, yes. The stock rom/kernel are not flashable in CWM, you have to use ODIN so having them on the SD card would not do you any good.
Not a problem. We were all new once. Like I said before, just make sure to do your own homework before jumping in head first. Many of us spend days/weeks reading before we ever did anything.
cm7
And do you have any tips for flashing cryanogen 7...
looked at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1142872 saying I need to flash two files separately... do I flash cm7 then gapps? both from CWM?
90 some odd MB seems fairly small for something running your entire phone. is this just an update?
In the process of flashing, does this change the file format, or does this occur when it reboots and installs?

Converts, then reboots to recovery, then flashes rom. Should do this all on its own. FYI, this is in the OP of that link. Make sure to read everything carefully!
Hey everyone,
I've had my Nexus S 19020T since March. Today I decided to root it using this tool. I didn't know which link to download so I downloaded the one titled "One Click Root for Nexus S - Clockwork 3.0.2.4" under "Superuser 2.0", since it was the first selection. I followed all the instructions and everything went great, so now I have a Nexus S with stock 2.3.4 and Superuser is installed. Everything looks normal.
I installed ROM Manager from the Android market and it said that I had to flash the latest version of Clockwork Recovery, so I did so by pressing "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" at the very top. I selected the "Samsung Nexus S" when it prompted me to select a phone and it said that it flashed successfully.
Next, I decided I wanted to use the latest version of MIUI found here. I put it on the root of my SD Card, and it shows up in ROM Manager when I press "Install ROM from SD Card". When I press on it, it shows a thing called "ROM Pre-Installation" and it gives me 3 boxes I can check mark: "Backup Existing ROM", "Wipe Data and Cache", and "Wipe Dalvik Cache".
I'm just wondering if I did all the right steps and that this is going to work well. This is my only phone, so I really don't want anything bad to happen to it.
In short, yes.
Long version? If you followed every single step, you shouldn't be worried. Read, read and read! Flash away and Enjoy MIUI!
Thanks! Are there any extra steps I need to know about before I start this? What will the process be like?

Thanks everyone! I flashed MIUI this morning and I'm having a ton of fun with it
Sorry guys, did searching all day on google as well as on here and to no avail.
Just got my Infuse 4G on Rogers running on 2.3.3 Gingerbread and I'm wondering if the Infused ROM will work on this? I've heard that it can get tricky when dealing with certain ROMs.
What precautions do I have to take? A lot of the details in the ROM thread confuse the hell out of me since I have no idea what kernels and stuff are.
I've already rooted the phone. I'm pretty much a noob that has crossed over from the iPhone.

Installation procedure coming from Rogers stock may be a little different than the typical procedures, however, Infused will be compatible - in fact Infused 2.x is based on your ROM!
Thank you!
I came across this instruction thread from android forums and it's quite a bit different than the instructions that the dev made on this site in the thread. Should this work even though it says Galaxy S i9000 when my device is the i997?
Infused. (Different versions are availible, but this is the basis to all verisons)
How to perform a full installation from stock: (Downloading Rom Manger per the instructions, is by far the easiest way to install this rom......Mr. Terrigno approves!)
1) First get root and install modded 3e recovery. (modded 3e recovery how-to at the bottem)
2) Install ROM Manager from the Market and launch it.
3) Select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" and choose "Galaxy S i9000".
4) If you've booted into CWM recovery since installing it, skip to step 5. If not, select "Reboot into Recovery". When 3e recovery comes up, select reinstall packages by pressing the power button. You will have to select it twice and then CWM recovery will come up. Select "reboot system now".
5) In ROM Manager, go to "Download ROM", select my section (gtg465x), select the latest release, and hit the download button.
6) When you get to the "Installation Type" prompt, select "Full".
7) Select your addons and follow the on screen prompts.
8) When you get to the "ROM Pre-Installation" prompt, select "Wipe Data and Cache". You can uncheck "Wipe Dalvik" as it's included in "Wipe Data and Cache".
9) Press OK and hold your breath. When 3e recovery comes up, just select reinstall packages.
Those instructions are for when coming from AT&T stock Froyo.
If you are on rooted Gingerbread, use gtg's "CWM Installation Instructions" from the ROM thread.
Perfect. Thanks! I'l try it when I get home.
I hope it all goes smooth!

This is how I did it on my wife's new Infuse from Rogers. Note that I make no claims as to whether the following is right/correct/most efficient way of doing it - all I know is that I was able to get it installed (previously tried Serendipity VII without success). Also note that I started with the following ODIN stock ROM due to an unsuccessful Serendipity install:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193927&highlight=uxkg3
a) I installed the following kernel so that I can get to the CWM doesn't check the file signature (I recall the stock rom above is only rooted, but doesn't have the non-checking CWM).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1197248
I tried installing 'recovery' (ie: CWM) manually, but the location of that file is different from where the AT&T Infuses are located (/system/bin?). And for some reason, if I recall, 'recovery' on my Infuse is located in more than one place; the funny thing is that when I rename it and reboot, the original one gets placed in again (tried copying it over and also deleting it). I eventually had to resort to installing the kernel instead. Anyways....
b) I followed the 'CWM Installation Instructions' from the Infused message thread below. The exceptions that I encountered are noted in red:
CWM Installation Instructions:
1) You must be rooted.
2) If you have a /Voodoo folder on your internal SD card, delete it and reboot.
3) If you're already running a custom ROM with Voodoo lagfix FULLY enabled, you can skip to step 7.
I tried to do 4), 5) and 6), but for some reason, it did not convert the filesystem to ext4. Therefore, I converted via the CWM from a) instead.
4) Download CWM-community-kernel-v8.zip if you're on Froyo or CWM-infused-v2.0.1-kernel.zip if you're on Gingerbread and place it on your internal SD card.
5) Install SGS Kernel Flasher from the Market.
6) Open SGS Kernel Flasher, select choose kernel, select the file you downloaded, and select flash kernel. Your phone will reboot and begin to enable Voodoo lagfix. Let it do that and boot all the way up. It will take a while (5-10 minutes) because it's converting all partitions to ext4.
Rest of the steps are the same:
7) Download update-infused-v2.X.X-full.zip and place it on your internal SD card.
8) Power off your phone.
9) With the phone powered off, hold both volume keys and the power button for about 10 seconds and then release. This should boot you into RED CWM.
10) Select "install zip from sdcard" and select update-infused-v2.X.X-full.zip.
11) Once that finishes, select "wipe data/factory reset".
12) Select "reboot system now".
Good luck!
Using following the cyanogen wiki LG G2x Full Update tutorial
I got clockwork and everything else working, but when I download cyanogen 7 and tell it to install it, the directions get a little fuzzy. I don't know exactly what to do in the root menu. I thought I'd just hit the 1st reboot option, but that just loads the phone normally with stock ROM.
I just started experimenting with different options, like factory reset, thinking maybe this would be the option to run cyanogen, but now I think I undid almost everything and I'm back to square one (Except superuser is still installed for some reason)

After you dload rom go to recovery, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, wipe data, wipe system, select install zip from sd, search for zip (cm7 rom u dloaded) and flash, then reboot.

Yes, I did mine via CWM though so I'm not as familiar with the way you're going about it. The main "trick" is that you have to flash CWM via nvflash not ROM manager, I learned that one the hard way. On the bright side it's nearly impossible to permanently brick this phone.
Sorry about the delay in reply, I'm at work so I'm not able to pay tons of attention to the forum.
You are not at a "root" menu. It is Clockworkmod Recovery menu. There is no such thing as a root menu.
Hello everyone,
I just bought a Verizon Galaxy S3 and I am in the process of rooting it. Im kinda freaking out because things really arent going that well for me. So far what I've done is root and unlock bootloader. Here is where the problem starts. When I try to reboot into CWM recovery it just boots me into the normal android recovery. Is this normal? every video I have watched shows people manually rebooting straight into CWM. The only way I can get it to work is if I go into EZ recovery and press "Flash" then "Reboot Into Recovery" buttons.
My second area of confusion is regarding the IMEI backup. Is this something everyone does when flashing roms on this phone? I am very confused as to what I'm supposed to do. Do I use the adb or download a terminal app from the play store? If someone could clarify that would be great !
Sorry if these questions are pathetic but this is my first time doing this and it's a learning experience I geuss. Here are the links to the guides I used for what I have done so far.

I recently saw someone have a problem getting custom recovery persist, and another member pointed out a step you needed to do to get it to stick. I'll see if I can locate that post and add it to this post.
As far as IMEI goes, you only need to back it up once, and then you are good to go. Perform step a followed by step b in the backup thread.

Alright thanks, so for most people once they flash it once it should stay every time they reboot into recovery? I have probably the noobiest question of all time, what does flashing CWM recovery even do? is it like flashing a rom where it just gets baked in to the OS permanently? Or does it actually provide a backup of data because I thought thats what nandroids were for.
Havent found exactly what I was recalling as far as the recovery problem, but I found something in a thread below this that makes me think maybe your bootloader wasnt unlocked properly. What version (if any) of ez recovery did you use?
Also, flashing CWM (ideally, at least) replaces the stock recovery with the clockworkmod recovery. Then, when you boot into CWM, that is where you make a backup (nandroid) of your current ROM. Once you have backups made you can quickly switch between ROMs by restoring the nandroids.
I hope I understood your question correctly and also answered it properly.

Yes you did, thank you so much. In the tutorial I used it was saying that the newer versions of EZ unlock were having problems so I downloaded version 1.2. How do I proceed if my bootloader was unlocked improperly? Also, I went in to EZ recovery and flashed CWM and made a nandroid backup if this matters.
Thanks so much for your help.
If you used version 1.2 then my point was moot. So you can only get into CWM if you install CWM from ez recovery and then hit reboot into recovery? If you do the hold vol up + home button while powering on it always takes you to stock recovery?
Yep its very weird. Not sure what to do.
Someone else will likely be able to chime in on how to correct this, unfortunately (or fortunately? lol) it hasnt happened to me so I havent had to deal with it. Its not a huge deal so I wouldnt worry about it.
Personally I use TWRP recovery. You can try that and see if it will stick, you can always go back to CWM later. Try it in ez recovery, or Goo manager from the play store (I use goo manager). If you want to try installing it from goo manager, install the app, hit menu, then select install open recovery script.
K cool. So would it hurt me if I just used ez recovery to flash and reboot everytime I need to get into CWM? Also for goo manager does that install the one you were talking about or CWM?

Goo manager is only for TWRP recovery. And as long as the backups are being stored and you can access them the next time you get into CWM, it doesnt matter. Like I said, hopefully someone will be able to tell you how to correct this issue and we will both learn a thing or two from it.
Did you follow Step 12 in Section 2 in the first link you posted?
You have to make sure to go to CWM v6.0.1 in the drop down and install that version of Clockwork Mod Recovery.
I'm not sure if that's the cause of your issue, but you may want to check into that
Yep i did that
