[Q] [Android] Live Wallpaper Switcher - General Questions and Answers

So I have several live wallpapers I like. So I thought I could try and find an app that would cycle through all the ones I have, or through some. I can't find any. What I found is it's not possible because the API's for the live wallpaper chooser or something like that aren't public. My question then is, can this be accomplished if the device is rooted?
I have no idea, but if it's possible I would love some ideas in the right direction so I could make the app myself. The problem is I have no idea how to make an app to take advantage of root permissions. But I can try.
Thx for any insights.

[Q] How to create home screens, themes, etc?

Hello all,
New to the forums and I'm pretty much a complete newb to smart phones as well (I haven't had a cell phone in close to 5 years lol). Anyway, got a Galaxy S2 a couple weeks ago, started wondering about customization, etc and ran into this site.
Looking at some of the home screens you guys come up with, they are amazing.
But, I honestly have no idea where to start to make my own. Do I need to root my phone to do this stuff? Or, is it as simple as downloading some themes and icons and installing them?
I don't mind reading and/or teaching myself how to do it, but, if someone could just point me the right direction I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance for any help. Cheers.
actually , you have no need to root your phone if you just want to change some icons or themes , but you may change your launcher so you can use those themes or dock icons that you have download in xda .
Try different launchers to replace your standard home, they're all good. Adw is what I normally use, launcher pro is good, go launcher also.

I was actually curious about this too. I like PyroMod, but I think the Opacity of the windows should be closer to 80% and the notification fonts should be white instead of black. What specifically do I need to modify for this to work?
Thanks for the replies.
I downloaded and installed Launcher Pro, just to try...I have read about ADW and a couple others that I will try as well once I get the hang of this thing.
Are there any problems that may pop up with the phone using 2 launchers? I guess not or you guys wouldn't be using them.
im using launcher pro and zeam launcher and i had no problems so far
Without rooting, you can change icons on your homescreen (using a home replacement app and/or Desktop Visualizer), use modified widgets as long as they're not system apps, customize your lock screen with WidgetLocker, and of course change your wallpaper. You can also use something like Multipicture LWP to do a bit more creative stuff - like embedding icons on the wallpaper in PS and stuff.
With rooting you can do all of those things, plus modify your status bar & notification icons, change icons for apps officially (not just on the homescreen), modify system apps or remove them, etc etc. If you have no reason to root, don't. It's a common misconception that you have to root to make your phone look good. While it definitely helps, it's not necessary.
If you do plan on rooting and are interested in theming, see if MIUI is available for your device. You may like it, and the theming possibilities are endless. If you don't like it or it isn't available, other roms have theming built in as well - CM7 is one that comes to mind.

Rooting might be something I would think about down the road, but, being so new to this I will probably hold off for now. I wouldn't mind unlocking it at some point though as I do travel to the States a couple times a year and would like the freedom that provides for my trips.
Thanks for the detailed reply, it is appreciated and I will look into some of those apps that you mentioned.

Glitchy apps and live wallpapers?

I don't know If I'm in the wrong place. But I would love an answer to some of my questions. If anyone could assist me I would be very appreciative.
I have restored my Nook Color to an earlier version 1.0.1, it came with firmware 1.2, I then used the latest Auto Nooter for firmware 1.0.1;
After doing so, I installed some basic apps, dolphin HD, file manager, live wallpapers, ect.
Some of these apps appear to be very glitchy. Force closing, and LauncherPro will not orientate screen position correctly when a Live Wallpaper is installed.
I am now wondering If I have gone about this root in the best way, and used the best mod.
What is the best root for the Nook Color at this point in time? there are so many confusing instruction guides, and several are different, so I do not know which one to do as they seem to change daily. I continue to get sent to different guides that make no sense to me.
I am sending this device to a friend for Christmas, they live in another state, she is not nearly as tech savy as me, haha, and she cannot mess with any of this once it gets to her. So I want to get all this done with before I send it. I want to use a very user friendly mod, and so far the one I have done seems to be really easy, but a bit glitchy.
I have a couple of questions if someone could clarify I'd be super grateful.
1.) What's the difference between the Auto-Nooter method? and the CM7 mod's?
2.) Can I install custom kernals or rom's from my AutoNooted, Nook?
3.) How come I do not have, and cannot access Rom Manager? ( I search it in the app market and only find the Premium version. It is not installed on my Nook already)
4.) Is there any way to find out why the Live Wallpaper is messing up? - Answered: LauncherPro seems to be the culprit.
5.) How can I access my launcher settings? I have downloaded 2, LauncherPro and ADW, yet I cannot seem to access settings for either of them.

[Q] Possible to Combine Widgets Without Root?

Hello there everyone. I have many widgets that I use on my device, and each of them come with different sizes. Because of that, it takes forever to scroll through all of them, even when in reality, I only have 20 different ones in total (But if each has 10 sizes, it adds up...) I found an app that combines them, but it requires root. (Or does it? Here.) I believe that Cyanogen does this on it's own, but I don't want to root my phone or change ROMs because I would be unable to pay for a new phone if something were to go wrong, nor do I have a spare to get me by if it was bricked. I know apps like WidgetLocker override stock apps without root, is there a way to do that with the widget selector?
Also, is the selector a function of the launcher, not the operating system? I'm using GoLauncher if that makes a difference.
Thank you very much.
So it is not possible to achieve the picker I want without root?
In that case, is there a foolproof, 100% successful way to root and change roms? All of the ROM threads I see have endless posts of bugs, things not working, and bricked phones. They also throw around lots of terms (Like flash this... But to where?) without explanations for noobs like me.
Can anyone help me out?
Hi there,
Think you can try Golauncher Pro, it let's you to custom the number of icon you can put on the home screens (default 4 by 4 ) and also lets you to resize the widgets.. hope that's what you are looking for.

[REQUEST] 3D Sphere App Drawer

As a new member of XDA, I would like to begin by thanking all of the devs for their great work, as well as all others for their advice and knowledge. Whenever I have problems with my phone or something I want to get done, I have learned that the great people of XDA always have an answer.
But now, on to my request: I'm sure many of you have seen the sphere transition that launchers such as GO Launcher EX have for their app drawers. I think it would be a great idea for someone to evolve this idea, and transform this sphere effect into full app drawer (preferably in the format of a standalone app, so that it may be used in any launcher). I imagine this would be fairly simple for someone to make, but quite frankly, I have no knowledge of programming and could not begin to undertake this task myself.
I imagine the app drawer would function much like the transition in GO Launcher EX does, but would not revert to the flat pages of the app drawer. Curiously enough, in GO Launcher, the transition can be rotated fully as long as you don't let go of the screen. This told me that it must be possible for someone to make this the actual UI for an app drawer, rather than just a transitional effect. In my opinion, this could be a versatile and modern interface, not to mention it being very classy in appearance. Thank you in advance for any help you guys may be able to offer.
Here is a link to a quick video I made, demonstrating how GO Launcher EX's sphere app can be rotated fully (the launcher is free on the market if you want to experiment with it on your own). Shouldn't this be able to be ported into a standalone app that STAYS a sphere? (Sadly this is my first post, so using a picture of the link as a workaround will have to do for now... Sorry!)
What he said.
No one has any idea how to get this option without Go Launcher? I'm surprised I've been trying to find any way to do this on my Nova pro launcher and can't find anything anywhere even about it really. I guess it must not be possible. It would be the nicest look though for sure.

modifying app to become a home launcher?

hi guys.
i remember reading a bit about this possibility a few years back, but i can't seem to find any useful info on it now.
i am looking to mod the XBMC apk for myself and a few friends, by turning it into a home launcher.
i know this can be done with certain apps from the play store, but i would prefer to do it this way.
anyone has some good tips on how to do it ?
bump?
