Painting my Nexus One ((in progress))

Well I got seriously bored of the Battery cover and bottom piece. I was just never a fan of the bronze like tint to it.
I initially started with the Ol Touch Pro battery cover method using Rit Dye.
The results were great but it started running leaving my hands tinted =-(.
I placed an order for paint which arrived but was the wrong finish so Im awaiting the return shipment.
In the meantime I went ahead and started on the Battery Cover/Bottom panel with some left over paint I already had.
Im using Krylon Fusion but I may regret not switching to Duplicolor as there bonding is to plastics may be better. Im worried that the teflon coating of the pieces may mess up the finish.
Removing the bottom panel is a PAIN unless you have a pry tool. I highly suggest going to Ifixit.com and order a few of there tools if you make a habit of pryin open phones/electronics. They help out a bunch.

This is what I used for bottom panel.
Second problem was the little metal contacts. Fortunately I have no intention of getting a dock. They are too small to duct tape and was worried about removing them. If they are removable I may just do it after as scraping the paint off copper shouldnt be a big deal.
Masking the camera is a pain as the metal circle doesnt give one an indent to xacto blade smoothly. It was a bit of trial and error but definitely doable.
Anyways pics of coat one below. I wont continue until I get the right sandpaper and paint finish. Still tossed up between gloss and matte.

I really like the black covers and the way it now matches the front paneling. I may not rip the rest apart to paint it white just yet.

Much prefer stock compared to that to be honest.
I know you're not done but the finish doesn't look to great.

Yeah the finish is nowhere near done. But the contrast the black creates is just alot better.
Already had someone ask me what phone I'm using ... in 11 months that's only happened twice.
Hopefully it'll look the way I intend it to.

dont be afraid to wet sand the clear coat either...its necessary to keep it glossy with out any orange peel

lol Same thing was said about my G1.
After I changed it to all white I sold it for 50$ more than I paid.
I was REALLY bored. With Gingerbread not around yet I figured why not.

Thanks for tip about the clear coat.
Already ran into some trouble as the paint doesnt seem to adhere as good as I thought. I went at it without adhesion promoter..may have to hit the do over if it doesnt settle well.

Did you sand the pieces before painting?
Your paint is going to fall off if you didn't.
It's the entire idea behind teflon coatings.

A little painters trick. Next time don't try to tape off the contacts (or any small area) just get a toothpick and some Vaseline. Put the Vaseline on the contacts then paint. After you are done just wipe clean.
Also watch your flash time between coats. Believe it to not wet paint doesn't bond to dry paint that well. You first coat should still be a little tacky when applying your second coat.

Only a light sanding. I did the same with the G1 and had zero issues (I did use adhesion promoter with that one though). Nexus one must have super super teflon.

Great tip.
I actually tried that with Elmers but vaseline would be MUCH easier for the tiny spots.
I may have let it dry too long. I normally have only painted in warm weather months so I can let it sit longer. With the cold weather it seems I have to reduce time between coats.

BTW
How many coats of clear coat is recommended ?
I only had my G1 a few months after painting when I sold it. If I plan to keep the N1 for longer ((no trackball or leds on Nexus S *sigh* Im looking for more durability.))
I recall reading on another forum where someone skipped clear coat altogether and put a zagg/BSE ever on top and it looked great after over a year of usage.

I would prefer spending $15 on full back black available on ebay rather than painting, it doesnt look smooth and highly finished.

Anyways..
Had to go back and sand everything off to get all the teflon removed.
What a pain.
I did the bottom piece over much improved. Battery cover will have to wait till after turkey day.

There's a couple of people selling black battery covers/antenna bottoms on ebay. With htc/google logo and all.

heres some pics of my painted nexus.. decided to paint it while waiting for replacement digitizer and lcd came in.. one coat primer -> lite sanding -> 2 coats rustoleum flat white -> lite wet sand (just to knock off some of the orange peel) -> 2 coat clear matte rustoleum (not a fan of glossy finishes) -> wet sand.. was going to do the battery/bottom, but am not sold on paint holding up well to that rubber.. will probably end up buying the black ones of ebay later on..

thanks man, will do.. it was a frustrating process lol.. i first tried a gloss enamel gloss paint, but the cure times where a pain (48 hours), and im all thumbs (dropped it a couple times while it was still drying, or wet sanded it to far down exposing the aluminum, forcing me to start over).. eventually just went w/a normal paint, im hoping w/the clear it'll hold up

[Q] Minor scratches on screen, will toothpaste help?

OK, so today I threw my Incredible (AMOLED if it matters at all) into my backpack and some keys in there scratched it a little bit. The scratches are not too deep, and you can't feel them or anything, so I was hoping there might be a way to fix it. I looked around a little bit and saw that toothpaste can help for getting scratches out of things like CD's and such. Has anyone tried this on their phone? I don't think anything bad would happen, but I don't really know...
Also, I know that I should have bought a screen protector, so please don't remind me about that.

'Getting scratches out' sounds like a bit of a oxymoron. You don't have something IN your screen, a scratch is more like a bit of surface screen missing.
I can't see why toothpaste would harm the screen. Just don't get the phone wet, turn it off, clean up afterwards, etc.
Really can't see how it would help either...

I have never heard of using toothpaste to fix scratches, but since the scratches are not to deep I try this product that has done wonders it is called apple sauce and was originally made to fix iPod scratches. Look it up on amazon.

Yes! It works well, rub it in tiny little circles starting in the center of the screen and working your way out. BUT BE CAREFUL. don't push hard ar all, and don't do the same part more than 2 or 3 little "circles" or you may destroy the screen. if you do it right though, it should work fine.

What do you mean "destroy the screen"? How easily can I accidentally do this? I don't want it to get worse!

They say you can do it on CD's it acts like a polish. I think it all depends on the surface of the screen and what kind of metirial it is made up of.

Mustard works better than toothpaste. It turns into glass when you use it to remove scratches on your phones screen. If you rub it on your face every night before going to bed you'll grow a proper manly beard too. Really, there's no limit to the things you can do with mustard with it's amazing properties.*
*All of the above is patently untrue in the same way that turning lead into gold is pure fiction. Toothpaste contains mild abrasives. Would you use sandpaper on your screen?

Nice! I tried the mustard, and it looks like it worked! My screen looks brand new! Also, I think I can already see stubble after just one night!!! The only problem is now my pillow is stained yellow...
Anyways, I thought that the toothpaste helped because of the slight abrasiveness of it...?

There are products here in the UK made under the Duraglit brand as Brasso and Silvo. These are metal polishes, but are also available as a cotton wad roll impregnated with the stuff. I do not know if they are sold in the USA, but there may be something similar from US manufacturers. As their name suggests they are made to clean and polish brassware and silverware.
It is a very fine abrasive suspension, but it also contains ammonia to remove any tarnish, and white spirit to act as a lubricant. They are quite good at removing scratches from watch glasses etc., by gently cutting into the surface, down to the level of the scratch.
On touch screen devices, the touch screen sensitive layer lives above the screen glass, but under a plastic protective layer. It will be this top layer that you have scratched. The product above or something similar may work, but check that the white spirit does not attack the protective plastic layer.
As mentioned above small, circular movements, a little at a time may work. If you cut through the protective layer, you are in trouble.

Nice to see people getting into the spirit of things Anyway, i hope you find a solution that works. I personally might be tempted to ask the manufacturer to replace the digitizer, as long as the cost wasn't too prohibitive. I tried changing one myself on an old phone and it didn't work out too well

Am not sure about what kind of display cover your phone has. But, if it's capacitive or IR and the top layer is glass, take it to the local wrist-watch merchant/repair center and they could fix it for you using H2SO4 and some filler.
Alternatively, you can have the top layer of the touch panel replaced.
And, next time, do use a screen protector. =D

I am not sure if toothpaste would help the screen scratches, its not a tooth scratch.. LMAO

Is it true that tooth paste works like sand paper on glass, does that mean that it contain something harder than glass? I don't have scratch just want to remove paint between my screen protector. Want to know if tooth paste actually micro scratch the glass.

As with basically all my other cellphones I convinced myself that I would not drop my Desire S on the road or other killer surfaces, so now that this has happened like 3 times at least, I am left with a few pretty nasty scratches on the aluminium body at the back. Besides dents and scratches not looking all too nice on their own, in this phone's case it looks even worse because it reveals the silver aluminium colour under the paint.
So does anybody know of a way to somehow kinda cover up these aluminium rends ?

put in a case, hide it in your pocket or go for the other extreme and scratch all the remaining paint off!

I have a grey Desire S which I dropped on a tile floor (ouch), left side first. Now it has two 1mm white dots where the metal paint chipped off, so I was looking for a silver permanent marker to maybe cover the white dots.
Have you tried the Edding marker? Does it wear off by taking the phone in and out of the pocket all the time?
If you've used this marker I'm looking forward to your feedback.

I have some lovely scratches and dents on mine. Somehow managed to take off a 1cm patch on the back under the logo; it's not too pretty. Even one of the dents is painful to touch as it is so sharp.
I'm afraid permanent marker will only make worse the current situation of my handset! In the case it goes and stays until it's needed!

Just put it in a case and convince yourself it never happened

Sorry, I have a Black Desire S, and yeah, Edding marker works. Just try to find the smallest you can, since the marker on top of the original paint will be noticeable under sunlight. try to stick to the white dots, and good luck!

lol whats the chances of finding this thread, i've always kept mine in a rubber case to try an prevent chips etc, but i removed it the other day to flash another rom and noticed the dust/dirt that had got into the case had made a right mess on the back, so i htought what could i do to fix it,, i chose to just put it back in the case an forget about it but im defo gonna try the black paint pen,, thanks man

Perhaps an oil based enamel paint... you may be able to get a small tin from a hobby shop.

Metal paint
Guys, please allow me to brag about how I fixed the two tiny paint chips on my Desire S. :laugh:
As suggested by TatoValverde, at first I wanted to buy a paint marker, but since I have the gray Desire S this became a bit complicated. It turns out paint markers are not really easy to find (in Romania at least), much less if they're silver/gray and it becomes almost impossible to find a gray paint marker with a 0,8 mm tip.
After searching for 2 weeks I gave up the paint marker idea, went to the closest DIY store and bought a 750ml paint can + one thin brush. DIY stores are great because you can find a lot of colors and different shades. And by the way, a paint can costs about as much as a thin paint marker.
Although I tried to pick the closest shade of gray, even the smallest paint dot is noticeable on the phone so I had to put just a tiny amount, let it dry for some minutes, then very gently wipe off some of the excess paint. Then apply again a tiny bit of paint and wipe the whole area, over and over again until I couldn't really notice with the naked eye where the initial chips were.
The good thing is this paint seems to be pretty durable (as I've noticed when trying to clean some stains.. ) and it's water and UV resistant.

Nillkin Fresh: Review

Hey everybody, got a new case review. This one is the infamous Nillkin Fresh, which is Nillkin's second generation of flip covers. To be honest, I got this case because it works with the iloome ScreenMate tempered glass protector I got, which didn't work with any of my other cases.
I got the yellow color, and it looks very nice. The flip has a darker yellow than the snap on part, which looks perfectly fine to me. The flip doesn't stay down for the first few days, and it doesn't have a lock mechanism. But, with a few days use, the flap does stay down on itself. Now, at first it wasn't working with my tempered glass protector, so I just kept stretching the fake leather out, and eventually it stays. I just clamped it so it stayed stretched. This is a very simple case, and if you don't drop your phone a lot (like me) this is a really nice case, it has a soft lining on the inside of the flip, almost like micro-fiber, and it helps keep fingerprints away. I do like this case, but it's not perfect. You can also use it as a stand, just fold it back and slide it into the slot. I absolutely HATE this feature, as the slot sticks out from the back of the case, so I can't use it with the Orb Charger. I forgot to take pictures of it, but it is REALLY annoying. Overall, aside from that one thing, it's a really nice case. :laugh:

Just to add on to OP, mine's the light blue one, a really sweet colour.
Has a microfiber (or whatever you call that) lining, prevents the screen from getting scratched.
The thickness. When paired with apps like Proximity AutoLock. you simply flip the cover and BAM, the phone locks itself. (Disclaimer: The app takes up quite a lot of battery though.)
Thickness again.
Thickness compared to a bumper. (if you haven't realized yet, I like blue )
The back plastic has got this pearly, glittery effect, too subtle to notice unless you're staring at it.
The front is a leathery kind of texture. Not real leather, of course.
It does destroy the edge swiping experience, with the exception the left hand side center (shown in the pic). May cause full screen SPs to bubble up too, but I have no idea, I don't use full screen ones.
How it looks. Mine has yet to become seasoned, so it'll topple if I don't support it. It has a hook that'll hook the front cover.
The headphone jack.
Those with a dbrand skin might want to take note, it kinda leaves a mark on the skin, but if you don't use the case for long enough, the mark'll go away.
I'd recommend it 8/10 overall as it makes it hard to use the phone using your left hand with the front flap, also, it makes my phone feel like a tank. But the front protection is great if you're not using a screen protector. But be careful of oil stains, they're almost impossible to remove from the inner lining. Washed it once, dried it and it feels like new again.

I have this case too, just never got around to finish writing my review. Mine is mint green (though some product pictures may appear turquoise).
Having a front cover in addition to the case is definitely nice, as I can drop it into my bag without worrying about what is going to hit against the front screen. Also very handy when talking on the phone with the flap covering the screen.
It's not slim as a ringke slim but not thick either, and the phone looks nice in it. I liked that it didn't have an actual lock to keep the cover on because it was easier to flip open.

It's so annoying when your holding it open. No comfortable way to do it.

Tbh it's quite hard. And trying to take a screenshot with both buttons is a nightmare. But I don't take that many screenshots anyway and the power button is not really that hard to press, it's just that their opening hole for the power button is a tad too small.

I can see the volume rocker is exposed when you open the case. The power button looks a bit hard. In my current case(looks like the ringke slim) i had to cut off the bar at the top to gain easy access to power button.

I got this case last week, black one. The plastic base is super cheap, there are at least two defects and the frame around the power button is simply bent. Although my flip cover actually rests perfectly on the screen, the plastic part makes noises everytime a little pressure is applied to the sides.
Went straight to the litter bin, I'd rather use my phone naked than inside this thing.
Just my two cents.

i have a full adhesive tempered glass screen protector

So my idea worked and i now have a full adhesive screen protector. Covers from edge to edge and there is no halo effect. The protector is on good and does not peel/pop out. I am using a unicorn beetle pro full body case and no problems. Before the case would pop out the protector but not anymore.

What exactly was your idea?
How did you manage this? (For the people that haven't been keeping up with your posts, such as myself.)

Did you use LOCA or OCA film?

One of his older posts discussed using LOCA. If you use LOCA, how do you get it off if you ever want to remove the screen protector?

Yes I used LOCA glue. To take it off you just heat it. It should be easier to remove than when replacing the digitizer.

I got a couple air bubbles though but id rather have that than a scratched up screen lol

I was just thinking about if this was a solution two days ago, but this is exciting news that its worked. My question is, is the LOCA a problem to handle, because i could see using too much might have some go into the speakers or just seep from the borders. when originally applied. and is there a way to make sure we don't get bubbles?

My question is, is the LOCA a problem to handle, because i could see using too much might have some go into the speakers or just seep from the borders. when originally applied. and is there a way to make sure we don't get bubbles?

Yea i got a little on the speaker but you just have to be care full and as it seeps kut clean it with a rag. The good thing is that it wont dry until you put the black light on it. The part you have to be the most carefull with is the home button. Loca will make it sticky and a little harder to press. I also reccoment you get a protector that is completely clear as the one i got has black on the top and bottom and it prevents the black light from drying the glue under those areas. Clean the screen good. To avoid bubbles look at youtube and see how they apply it. Basically a stick figure but instead of a head it is a y shape. Carefully place the protector and let is slowly spread on its own. Once it stoos spreading then you could slowly press down on it and remove the remaining bubbles. I lined uo thw home and back buttons first and made sure the cut outs were aligned for the camera and sesors. Then i applied the black light on the bottom half furst so that it would align properly. I did this while pressing down on it because the air bubbles kept coming up. I also covered up the top half so that wouldnt dry up. Oncw i got the bottom i got rid of any air bubbles on the top half and did the same. After that i put the phone in a box., close it up, do a cut out for the black light to fit and let it sit for a couple minutes to dry more. Then i cleaned and dried the edges. Make sure not to leave too much of the loca in between the screen and protector so you wont get touch senaitivity issues. And do it where there is no dust. I oly got 1 small air bubble but some like white spots that appear to be dust. And again clean the speaker, home button, sensors, and camera before drying. You could also just scrape it off with a plastic blade that the loca came with. And make sure to use liquid version and not the film.
