No it made no smell or sound. I was moving widgets around and book it vibrated and shut off and wont come back on it just vibrates when i turn it on but the screen never comes on.
I have galaxy mod universal rls15 on it. Is this the infamous sudden death crap that has been happening?
Hate to ask but is it dead. I have had mine shut off on me at like 20% but it was actually dead. Charged it up some and it fired right up.

Almost same exact thing happened to me, except with 10% battery. Charged it up and ran battery calibration. No issues since.

Hmmm battery was around 30% but its never done that before. Although my friends iphone just started shutting off at 40% lol maybe there are phone gnomes at play.
edit: Whelp i guess it is the battery it did seem to be draining very fast. Its dead and ive been using it since 10am barely. Maybe this rom is not doing so good on my battery. But still it shouldnt turn off at 30% and not come back on.

It could be a rogue app running in the background. I am running the same ROM and it is doing absolutely perfect!

Using the program here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1835791
I tried to unlock my bootloader. Everything seemed to go fine until the program said the phone was rebooting.
The display went dark as if rebooting but never came back on. Since that moment I can't get the phone to power up at all. I can't get into recovery or download mode. The screen doesn't seem to even try to come on. The phone acts as if it has no battery installed even though the battery is there.
Anyone have any suggestions or do I have a legit brick?

sounds like a 100% legit brick. Does it show up as a device when you plug it into a windows computer?

Yes but only for about 5 minutes or so. I can try longer if you think it might help.

Could be a major detail that some might overlook. That'd for sure do it. I got rid of my OG few weeks ago n I'm still stock so I wouldn't know this, but doesn't the process only take like 10 seconds if that? The actual flashing that's taking place. So it'd have to be quite the odds to lose juice in the middle of flashing. But wouldn't it be charging if its plugged in usb? I hope that my man who posted this gets it powered back up. Would be a major bummer otherwise.

That's pretty strange see if when you take your battery out of the phone if you can plug into the wall and boot.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
Yes I have tried it without the battery. Right now I'm letting it sit without any battery or power to it to allow all components to discharge. I'll try it again in a couple of minutes.
I'm beginning to think I've got a real live or rather dead brick.

Just to make sure you read and followed all steps right? This one seemed crucial
**** IF YOU HAVE ANY PROGRAMS THAT SYNC WITH YOUR PHONE THEY NEED TO BE UNINSTALLED OR NOT RUNNING BECAUSE THEY CAN CAUSE BRICKS, Pdanet, easytether, droid explorer, kies, etc., etc., on down the line. I repeat if you have a program on your computer that syncs with your phone, it is NOT COOL TO HAVE THAT RUNNING! ****
Just trying to narrow down what the hell could cause the device not to power back up, also how long did you leave the device plugged before disconnecting or pulling the battery. Did oden stop responding or say anything other then rebooting ?

Or instead of paying shipping plus not having a phone for a week or so, you could file an insurance claim... Haha. Last I checked Asurion was still giving new phones due to lack of refurbs.
I had to run out quickly earlier to get a new sim for my Thunderbolt so I can have a phone to use in the meantime. The sim I had for it didn't work.
Some good suggestions. Thanks everyone. I'll have to ponder my options few as they are.

Yeah but when Vzw gets it back do they then discover it was rooted and then charge me for breaking warranty? I've always wondered how much they could tell in a situation like this.

They don't have to get it. Say you dropped it off a boat and you couldn't save it. They don't need it for insurance.

I had this happen on an HTC phone one-time. No joke, but to fix it, I think it ended up holding down power + volume down or up and then put the battery in. I tried a bunch of combinations like that until it booted. Same thing when taking the battery out. Does the red light show when the phone is plugged in?
Hello all,
So I'm a noob when it comes to rooting, but I got through it fairly simply on my first go. All I've really done since is disable the annoying wifi available notification in the pull down bar. I've noticed however, that the phone has been getting pretty hot since then. Not sure if this is the right place to post, but any help would be appreciated.
Don't understand why just rooting would do that myself. Are you charging it when it gets hot? I know my old bionic would get wicked hot if i was tethering off of it and charging it. But just charging it along only slightly. It was using massive amounts oof battery, like tethering, while charging that induced the heat.
On the other hand though I still tether 5 or 6 people at a time on my S3 a night while charging and my phone barely gets warm. Pushing almost a gig of data a night. Maybe your battery is getting fried? What apps are you using most when it gets hot?

That may have been it. I restarted the phone after bad let it charge that night. Today it hasn't happened to me yet. I'll keep this updated though.

Let me take a wild-arse guess: you're running the VRLHD radio? If so: known problem - it's always hot.
How do I find out?

Settings > About phone > Baseband version. FWIW IDK how well known of a problem this is. I'm running the VRLHD radio and my phone is never hot. Asked a few others who frequent d2vzw discussion and they were also unfamiliar. If you want to know for sure, grab a different radio from invisiblek's modem thread and try that.

i was in recovery and fixed permissons for whatever reason.... and my phone would only boot up to the samsung logo. i was going to do the "HOW-TO unbrick your soft bricked gs3" downloaded everything but now my phone wont turn on at all. it was low battery, but it wont charge now. , to even get it to show a sign of life, i plug my phone into the computer or outlet without the battery, put the battery in and it flashes the battery logo for about 2 seconds, and the loading circle does not spin. then it just goes black.
any idea?

Just let your battery charge for an hour or two. I know there are no signs us charging, but I've seen this a couple times on the threads here and after charging anyways works. Assuming you didn't flash an international ROM

Ya do what kintwofan said, it happened to me once where it seemed like it wasnt charging but it was. If you leave it on the charger for like a hour and it still wont boot then try and boot it into recovery then in that menu goto reboot now.
still 0 power
wow seems like a lot of people are having this issue lately! maybe the mayans were wrong about the world ending and it was samsung s3's that were supposed to perish?

no hence the 0 power. took it to verizon today and their mailing me a new one.
this morning my alarm went off a couple times, and I snoozed it - I woke up shortly later and noticed my phone was just vibrating every few seconds (it was plugged in charging). I pulled the battery and repeated and it happen again. I have a wireless charging mod so I pulled the strips that connect to the phone to see if that fixed it and it didn't.
I have a spare battery (I was using ANKER 2200 Mah at the time) and put it in (this is a stock battery) and it booted fine. this is strange, because not even 10 minutes the phone was working fine with that battery.
I'm running the latest cleanrom, and have been for the past couple months with basically no issues. Any Ideas?
Hmm the only idea I have is do a full wipe and reflash. Do a backup before

I recently had an issue like this. My phone would randomly shut down. I found it persisted across ROMs so I knew it wasn't that. It ended up being my battery. Bought one off of Amazon and it has been like new ever since.
So my answer .. check the battery if you can. I was lucky enough to know some one with the same phone and was able to swap batteries for a bit to confirm it.
Take the battery and place it on something flat. If it spins easily (swollen). That's a good sign that it is on the way out.
Yeah... the battery seems a tad swollen! Thank you!!

Even the best batteries can go bad. I've even seen the iPhone split apart from a bad battery swelling up inside.
I've been using an Andida(?) 2300 mAh battery in my GS4G without issue. My HTC G1 has pretty much only been used with random eBay batteries (as the original HTC battery swelled up and stopped working years ago).
I've had some cheap batteries last a long time, and I've had OEM batteries crap out on me.
It's all kinda random.
So... About six and a half hours ago decide to check out that Xylon Ultimatum ROM (still haven't bought a new battery) was runnin P.A.C. All In One, and my phone has not shut off once. over 6 hours now! Could that have been a ROM issue? i thought for sure it was battery cause i been using that P.A.C. ROM for awhile now. and it just started this shutting off thing. i havn't seen anyone post anything with this issue running PAC All In One.
I'm thinking my battery is all good! It's been over 24 hours now and the battery is holding a great charge! Could the pac rom have that issue?
i messed with my voltages with SETCPU app the same way i did with the PAC ROM, and my phone shut off the first time i shut off screen! i subtracted 25 to 50 on all MHz levels. i changed them back and everything seems proper! could this be the cause of my shut down issue???
Thank you!!
