[Q] Really low cell signal in ViperROM XL 3.1.0 [Solved] - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hey guys, I managed to completely root and unlock my bootloader and even install a custom Rom all on my own without asking a single question and I'm pretty proud Lol. Thanks to the awesome All in one Tool.
So I installed ViperRom XL 3.1.0 with Jellybean and I really love it, the creators did an amazing job so props to them. But ever since I flashed it, I have had horrible cell phone signal compared to stock, I would always have 4 to 5 bars in my house, now I only get 1 to 3, no matter where I go.
People have tried calling me a few times and said it goes straight to voicemail sometimes, and another weird thing I noticed is that as soon as I make a call or answer a call, the bars jump to full signal.
Do I need to flash a new radio or kernal to fix this? I have the at&t version of the One X currently, but any help would be GREATLY appretiated. I don't want to go back to stock anytime soon.

Try checking your VPN settings. They mentioned this problem for AT&T customers.

Solved
I tried both methods, including the 152 thing and it didn't work
BUT, I managed to fix it on my own without having to flash a radio thankfully.
The problem was that during the Aroma installer, I picked "Stock" at the status bar icon selector while flashing ViperRomXL
Since I have AT&T, it must of calculated how many bars I have left incorrectly on the signal icon, so I factory wiped, and reinstalled ViperXL, this time making sure I chose the AT&T set of 4G/3G icons, and bam, perfect signal again.
But thanks a lot you guys for trying to help, I appretiate it.

Huge Network Issues (TMO)

I just recently completed a move from Vegas to Phoenix. Upon arriving i saw that my mobile network just constantly bounced from edge to none to 4g to 3g and nothing ever above 2 bars. no matter where i go, thats the way it is. even when other people with TMO are right next to me and have perfect service. i finally bit the bullet and went into the tmo store and basically the guy told me that i had to get a new phone. My current rom is paranoid android but it does the same on AOSP MIUI and sense 4 viper rom. havent tried any others because i figure i have most of my bases covered there. ive flashed every combination of radio and RIL possible and it does the same thing. when i went in, they gave me a new sim card because they said my sim card was "2G" but seemed to pick up 4g just fine in vegas with 0 issues.
did my phone just really magically break while driving i guess?
another note: it seems worst when sending text messages, like ill recieve one with 2 bars of 3g, type it out, hit send, right after i hit send it just drops the service and says message cannot be delivered. i just have to keep getting it sent back and send it again until it finally goes through. this issue is very very frustrating. thanks for any help you guys can give me, i do want to get a new phone but need this one to work until i can afford it. oh yeah, newest firmware if that matters but i hadnt even updated it before i got out here, it was just one of things i tried to fix it. NOTHING has worked or even helped a little bit.
You and I live in different ends of the US but we seem to have the same issue. My wife has a Sensation also and has good signal most places when I can be right beside her and have no signal, just like right now, I will be lucky to get this to send. I too have tried several radios and RIL's also. I got some advice from mf2112 a short while back. I am just now going to look into it further. Check the pins that make connection to the back cover and make sure they all are making good connection. I am checking mine as soon as I get home, I am sick of not having signal when I know I should.
Hey guys i have an advice the same happened with me and i installed the official ruu with european radio and ril and it just went fine from there and after that i installed many roms(i lost the count anyway)it worked fine 4me try it out bestof luck

I just checked my connections and even lightly cleaned the dust off of them to see if maybe that was the issue. actually seems like it helped a little but not enough to solve the issue. it was definitely worth a shot though. might be placebo effect tho...

are you talking about flashing the actual RUU that says "mod edit: do not flash" or are you talking about the 3.33 firmware from europe? i flashed this firmware and it didnt help my issues. im wondering if i shouldnt try to go back to 100% stock or something this is very frustrating. the guy at the store told me "you know, when you flash things over and over sometimes stuff just breaks" which doesnt make any sense to me. every phone ive ever had i could flash as i please. and i wasnt even heavily flashing anything on this one until i started having this issue.
I have done exactly what the poster has done.
I have done everything... here's what I know
The issue is only from cm9 and aokp.. try flashog hyper nonsense and you shouldn't have issues.. problem is u lose all the aokp settings
It seems.like the issues flux in out.. one day it will work.. one day it wont.. sometimes I.wonder if the tower you are connected to.makes a difference
No,.it.doesn't break from.flashing it.over and over.. the storage is flash so it doesn't have a limit

Random disconnects, HTC One S

My new HTC One S randomly disconnects very often. It will have the bars there, show 4G connectivity, but it won't go to any websites, all outgoing calls stay stuck on dialing, and incoming calls do not work.
I'll reboot the phone twice, and it will work. This happens consistently in locations where a Galaxy S 4G and an HTC Sensation have worked flawlessly.
I have read about this issue on the forum for the HTC One X, but not for the S. This is really disappointing. My HTC Sensation dropped wifi often and the bluetooth range was unusable if you put the phone in your pocket and wear a bluetooth. This phone worked on wi-fi great, and the bluetooth was on par with my old Samsung phones, but this is of no use when it can drop service and not even tell me.
Has anyone else had this problem? I got the phone brand new at a dirt cheap steal price. If this is one of those "yeah that will be fixed in a future update" problems I'd like to know so I can dump it on eBay and get something good before its price depreciates.
I haven't seen that as an issue for most people. Esp the way you describe it. Where did you buy it. Maybe a lemon unloaded on you. You could root and see how it goes. LeeDroid/TrickDroid/Axiom good roms.

The One S and all DC-HSPA+ phones have latency issues when you first use the connection after a long period of no data activity. Latency during that time can be upwards of a second as they negotiate from a sleep state back to DC-HSPA+.

I'm talking 10-15 minutes of waiting before rebooting the phone due to no connectivity. I'll try another ROM & rooting and see what happens.
That length of time is not something I have seen posted anywhere before
Good luck--
Probablt an outdated radio?you could try to supercid, install a newer rom with newer radio..

Try TrickDroid 7.0 or S e n s e i s s i m O, they are on 4.0.4. Are you S4 or S3, it matters.
You don't need Super CID to flash new radio if your HBoot is earlier than .13, just flash thru recovery--ck md5 if provided

So HBOOT 1.09 is good to flash radio? Do I need TWRP or can I flash with CWM
T-MobileUS HTC One S
Yes, .09 ok to flash
I like twrp and you can flash thru recovery. With cwm I would use fastboot. Although fastboot is recommended for all radio flashing.
I have exactly the same problem. I constantly put it in and out of airplane mode to "reset" the radios. If its really bad, I end up rebooting several times. There is another thread that's sort of like this. I'm extremely frustrated with this and have tried 4 or 5 different roms and radios. Nothing seems to be working. Thinking about calling it quits on the one s and coughing up the cash for a Nexus.
I've tried several different ROMs & radios to no avail. Same connectivity problem. I'm on S4 so I have a better selection of ROMs. I tried every radio, not simply the newest radio.
My experience with HTC has been a rocky one. First I had the MyTouch 4G on T-Mobile, which was the slowest phone I've used outside the BlackBerry Storm. I had two separate HTC Sensation 4G phones, which were interesting. Some phones connect to wi-fi networks. These two begrudgingly hung off wi-fi networks with 1 or 2 fingers until the wind blew the wrong way and caused them to fall off. The bluetooth signal on both was abysmal - excellent off a desk, but put the phone in your pocket and static would ensue in a manner no Motorola or Samsung device I've used would. Now, the next natural step, no mobile network connectivity without turning airplane on & off.
I love the way HTC devices feel, I love the way HTC Sense works, but at the end of the day, the issues I encounter are just not for me. I dislike the plasticy fingerprint laden back of a Samsung device, and the less impressive UI, but I need these things to functionally work properly all the time - speed, wireless connectivity, mobile network and all. Reading the forums and finding so many complaints on One X connectivity, combined with my past HTC experience, I have a feeling replacing this with another One S isn't going to solve my problem.
Thank you very much for your suggestions, opinions, and input. I highly appreciate it. Should any of my last ditch efforts result in success, I will happily post precisely what I did to make it work. I am rooting for it because it is such a cool damn phone. If nothing works, I am confident HTC will be just fine without a whiny malcontent like myself as a customer.
Thanks again!

New radio has done wonders for me so far.
T-MobileUS HTC One S
Having same issue with tmo one s.
Data randomly not working
4g shows good signal
Wait >1 minute with no improvement or change
Airplane mode on/off....doesn't recover
Menu >>Settings>>mobile network on/off.....doesn't recover
Menu >>Settings>>more>>usage>>mobile network on/off.......recovers/data ok
OR
Reboot phone.... ..recovers/data ok
Stockunrooted
Software ver 1.84.531.2 710RD (CL63329)
Baseband 0.16.31501S.16_2_10.22.31501S.10L
Contacted HTC and they said they are looking into it with a few others and will call me back.
Will post if I get useful info.
ALSO
Wi-fi is much better...but is still pretty wonky. I have almost stopped using my phone for data. 4G is pretty much useless at this point. Out of town all last week with no wifi available and couldn't use phone because data was always out. Uses all battery as it fails to load page....continues wearing down battery if you give up and let screen turn off. When it happens you almost have to stop the browser or background sync to keep it from wearing down battery.

Yeah, you are going to be stuck with that until T-Mobile releases an update. I flashed the radio from recent European update and it seems to have fixed that issue for me so far.

Thanks for letting us now that the newer radio helps with this problem. I have to restart my phone twice a day most of the time, sometimes three times and it's really annoying. I keep thinking I should just get rid of the phone and get a different one, but then I think, well.... that's more money and they might actually release an update, maybe....

Can you let us know if the new radio you put on fixes the problem? I'm still browsing for a new phone, but if this one works in the meantime, I have an excuse to save myself some hassle.

[Q] How/why are Sprint ported roms getting better data reception

I flashed the Goodness and the Wicked Sprint ports after hearing that they bump up dBm by -10 I was very sceptical thinking maybe it was just measuring incorrectly or differently giving scued numbers. While running Wicked yesterday I went to a restaurant and a local store were I struggle to get 3g and drop often. I had a bar of 4g ! and no drops I was going to restore a CWR nandroid of Beans7 to see if it was the Rom but I recently switched to TWRP and didn't have time to fool with it. Anyone know how this would be possible? I've flashed a lot of roms and never noticed any difference in dBm even though they were said to be tweaked.

Yep running the Verizon blk3 modem and rpm, for anyone who doesn't know Sprint modems will do nasty things to your phone never flash them (any modems other than Verizons for that matter). I went back to CWR so the next time I get back to the restaurant or the hardware store I'll restore back to Beans and get some screen shots for comparisson. I'd run some speed tests but they always end up being all over the place I don't think it would prove much. Post my shots once I get them, there is supposed to be a new Goodness rom out tonight so I know what I'll be doing later Flashhhh Aaaaahhhh God I love this phone
[Edit] screenshots first two Beans 7 second two Wicked Sensation port. Taken from exact same spot in the store, Wicked kept 2-3 bars of 4g through out the store Beans 7 never got 3g and dropped completely twice had to airplane to regain signal.
Noticed 10dB listed increase in signal on Wicked Sensations compared to CleanRom. Don't know if it's just the way the signal is reported or real boost!

S3 dropping call

Ok im starting to go crazy now. I had a galaxy nexus that was rooted and started getting dropped calls after 30min on the dot. I thought it was something i did to the phone so i went and got an S3. rooted with liquid smooth (stable) ROM and nothing else. Now im having the same problems. Got a new sim card and still having dropped calls after 30 min. Someone please help with this I am getting so frustrated with this. Im going to activate my untouched thunderbolt and see if it follows. I really dont wanna go back to a stock ROM on the S3 cuz i do not like the layout. Again any help would be great. Thanks.

I think is a Samsung Radio issue... I don't use my SIII anymore because of it.
The S 3 radio isn't the best your location can compound the problem. I haven't experienced drop calls other than in the obvious dead zones.
I have heard the radio wasnt the greatest but 30 min exactly every time? Thats gotta be something different. Could the way i unlocked have caused this or the ROM that was installed caused this? When i had my nexus rooted, i didnt have any issues till i messed with the radio. The S3 i didnt touch the radio unless it was built into the ROM. Liquid smooth (stable).
AOSP ROMs isn't as good signal wise as the Touchwiz ROMs with few exceptions. You can test out other AOSP ROMs to see if you are having the same problems.
That was one of the reasons I went way from Liquid (and bluetooth). I'm on CleanRom 6 now, and have pretty good call quality and signal with the VRBLK3 radio. For some reason, the latest radio from 4.1.2 didn't play nice with my phone or location. If you want better signal, TW is the way to go.
So you also had 30 min dropped calls or close to it from Liquid?

No, not exactly at 30 minutes. I would experience dropped calls in specific areas, like when I was driving. I also experienced more chopping sound quality with the latest radio. Flashed back to LK3 and it is much better.
Is it 30 minutes no matter what you are doing or where you are? If that is the case, I'd do a clean install of a TW rom with the radio and rpm of your choice and see if that helps.

[Q] Quick question, quick answer

Gentlemen,
As the title suggests, I won't be taking long, I only have a quick question to make which I do hope it has a short and fast answer by you.
I'm no total ignorant when it comes to flashing, kernels , custom roms etc etc, I do know my way around. But I seem to have come to a dead end.
Just bought a Galaxy s3 , courtesy of verizon , second handed. The thing is, I plan on using it in Greece,
I've been reading a couple hundred posts about issues with GSM , data connections and whatever comes with it.I myself had a problem with being stuck at roaming after flashing cm 10.2 just tonight. I had to go back to stock 4.1.2 verizon to get signal back.
I hope you understand where im trying to land over here. Imagine this scenarion: Me, phone, Greece,non-stock based custom rom . Phone/text/data issues? What do you suggest? I come very confused...

For roaming on AOSP, see here if it happens again. You'll probably want to edit your APN settings for data if you already have the local sim for Greece. I don't know much more than that but you should be good there. Popping the sim in and selecting GSM should be enough for calls. Keep a TW rom on your phone in case you have issues cuz that will help you in a jam. If you aren't confident that your AOSP rom is 100% stable, which they usually aren't in some way, having a touchwiz rom like Cleanrom or Bonestock could be your alternative rom.
Almost got to the bottom of this, flashing a TW based rom is working perfectly as expected.
Thing is with AOSP based roms i only get verizon wireless as a carrier and a constant -120 dbm signal power.ALthough i can make calls, i cant text or get data.
