[Q] Confused Newbie: Which guide to root/unlock S3 with OTA 4.1.1 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi all: There seem to be 2 Guides in the developer section for rooting/S3 with OTA jelly bean, both by same developer. They are titled as below:
Root, Custom Recovery, and Unlocked Bootloader for Jelly Bean OTA
Stock Jelly Bean Factory Images with Root, Custom Recovery, Unlocked Bootloader and No Data Wipe
I just want to root/unlock my stock phone, leaving data intact. The two guides are different. One is updated 12/12, the other 12/25. One has a single download for recovery + stock image, other they are separate. Not sure which one to use. Thanks.

The second one is for those who want to flash rooted stock ROM via Odin. Either one will do.

[Q] ICS downgrade from JB

Is it safe to downgrade from stock jelly bean to stock ICS?
There reason I'm asking is that I wasn't able to get the Jelly Bean OTA to work so I manually flashed the Jelly Bean OTA using Odin. The one I flashed came pre-rooted and pre-loaded with a custom recovery. I want to have a completely untouched stock version of Jelly Bean, something I haven't been able to find here or elsewhere (I would get this by doing an OTA update to Jelly Bean from the stock ICS rom that I flash).
I'm thinking that the reason that I couldn't get the OTA to flash (it gave me an update fail notification every time) was because I wasn't completely stock on the previous ICS version, even though I had unrooted, relocked the bootloader, thawed bloat, etc.
If anyone could answer the first question, and the others I've raised, that would be great.
(I know that it is probably OK, but I wanted to double check since it was a major no-no to downgrade when I had a Droid Razr Maxx).
Yes, you can safely downgrade in order to take the OTAs.
Yes, your past OTA attempt probably failed because you weren't fully stock in some way. There is an error log stored on your phone that you could have checked for the exact cause. As a general note, OTAs require you to be on stock recovery, but not necessarily Unrooted.
You mention that you are unable to find a stock image file for the JellyBean update. This file is readily available here at XDA, and can be downloaded from the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974114
Performing only Step 1 from that thread would leave you with a fully stock, unrooted, locked bootloader JellyBean ROM.

upgrading from 4.03 to jellybean

I currently have 4.0.3 on my nexus s device and it is rooted with a unlocked bootloader. If i want to upgrade to jellybean do I have to unroot and lock the bootloader again? thanks
have you flashed custom recovery image like clockworkmod recovery? if not then do so... there are tutorials in the dev section and you can also search them up on google if you want to flash a custom rom otherwise you want an official update then i have no ideas lol :highfive:

[Q] Best guide to set up my replacement GS3.

Hey guys just got a replacement it's still on 4.1.1. Should I follow this guide that I used when I first received the phone? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974114. If so, how do I make sure I'm updated 4.1.2? Thanks!
You need to update it via OTA. The factory image for the 4.1.2 is still not available.

Will I have a problem unlocking it and flashing a custom rom after I do that?

[Q] Updating your bootloader

I'm currently on Android 4.1.2 using Baked 6 and I want to upgrade to Baked 8, or anything on 4.2 for that matter. If I update a ROM, does this also mean it updates my bootloader? If not how to I properly update my bootloader without bricking my tablet? I've been reading around but there's so much data on the forums that I feel like I'm going to accidentally make a mistake

No flashing a custom rom will not upgrade your bootloader, only the stock asus firmwares will do this or a custom made blob file.
There are several methods to upgrade your bootloader to a JB 4.2 bootloader which can be found here or here. I prefer using the fastboot method for upgrading but up to you. Just make sure that once you've upgraded your bootloader to a 4.2 bootloader that you flash a -4.2 version of twrp or you will brick. I would suggest upgrading to JB 4.2 - 10.6.1.15.3 & twrp 2.5.0.0-4.2 as I find this more stable than 10.6.1.8 & twrp 2.4.4.0-4.2
If using the fastboot method and you need any help with any step just let me know.

Download this full stock firmware http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23134718111254196 then use Odin to flash, once done take the OTA and it should be fine. BTW, once upgrade to 4.3 your bootloader will be locked permanently meaning you can't flash custom firmware (rom/kernel/recovery), the only thing you can do is root with saferoot. can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758

If you still want to install custom firmware then DO NOT TAKE THE 4.3 OTA UPGRADE. If you decided to flash custom rom then after flash stock MF1, you need to unlock bootloader, root, flash recovery then flash custom rom (most custom rom already rooted so you probably don't need to root). Your phone status will be CUSTOM.

Haviing only used Odin when I initially rooted my phone a year ago, I need to ask some specifics on your instructions.
1. Do I boot the phone into Download mode when flashing?
2. Do I flash it by selecting the PDA box and selecting the file there?
3. This will make my phone basically "out of the box" and back to stock recovery, correct?
Thanks in advance.

The stock root rom is probably the most stable one. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2591895 just follow the instruction on this link.
