[Q] Help please - phone does not recognize charger or usb cable - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am expieriencing a strange and very annoying problem with my Nexus s lately. For some days now, the device does not activly recognize a plugged in usb cable (and charger there for).
This results in me not being able to transfer files from or to my phone or access adb / fastboot. However charging works - without the phone displaying, that it is being charged.
I had a spare battery at home, which I didnt need until now, so I unboxed the battery and put it in, to no avail. The device is per se usable, but does not communicate out of the usb port.
Can you please help me troubleshoot / solve this problem?
/edit: some additional information:
If the phone is turned off and I plug in the usb cable, which is connected to the charger or my pc, it immediatly turns on and boots up.

what rom do You use? I had a problem with USB connection on SlimBeam. Flashing different rom helped, just download and flash it through your device, without using PC.

maybe You should try reflashing rom, or flash different one with full wipe. if it won't help it might be a hardware issue.

I am afraid it is indeed an hardware issue. I just reflashed Rascarlos rom, which I had on my sd card. I wiped system cache dalvik + factory reset for good messure.
Well, I still got my Nexus 7 3G as my device for daily use. Guess no more flashing and developing on my good old Nexus S. It will serve as a classic phone as long as it still charges its battery.
What a shame ... such a great device. Didn't let me down once until these days

USB problems

Hey. My captivate has been working beautifully with these new GB roms until about a week ago when my computer won't even recognize my phone. and all the phone shows that it charging but no notification about USB connection? ive tried different ports and reinstalling drivers all that good stuff and restarting my computer and turning on and off usb debugging and the cable still works with other devices so can anyone help?
Also can you tell me if samsung will replace my phone with a custom ROM on it? im thinking of doing this because i cant flash back to stock without the USB working!
Are you sure the cable is 100% functional? What other devices?
Try plugging it in to another computer as well

I have had that problem on a few gb roms too. Go into USB settings and change them to kies and then plug your phone into the computer using your USB cable. Just leave it plugged in for a few seconds, you don't have to wait for your phone to be detected. After unplugging the cable, restart your computer and phone. Once both are running again, go back into USB setting and change them back to USB storage and then plug your phone back into your computer, making sure you use a USB port directly connected to your motherboard. Works for me everytime.
Edit: If you suspect that your USB cable is not working, see if Odin will detect your phone in download mode. Don't flash anything, just see if it says connected in Odin.

it didnt work if i just go to samsung and give them the phone with the custom rom on it what would they do?
Download kies and see if your computer will detect your phone in kies mode. You could always get an SD card and put all the files on the card then move them to your internal SD. If you have a custom rom installed you can flash stock using cwm. Did you try connecting your phone in download mode to your computer running Odin??? If it doesn't detect it then your USB port is not working or your USB cable is broken. If it is working flash stock and start again. It could be a bad flash.
i have had the same problem a couple days ago, plugged in another captivate into my computer it recognized it. then plugged in my phone and everything was working fine again.
try plugging in anothe android phone running froyo or whatever version you have
Can you get your phone into download mode?

Sounds like it could be, try plugging it into the back of the computer and see if that helps.

The USB drivers for download mode are in the bootloaders and has nothing to do with the USB drivers for the rom. Even if you had a bad flash and the USB portion of the rom was corrupt, your computer would still be able to detect your phone in download mode. See if you can plug your phone into a different computer either at a friends house or at work to see if they can detect your phone with your cable. If not, you will need a new cable.

So what if that didn't work and nothing was wrong with the cable? Would it be my USB port on the phone because the cable wiggles when I put it in.

Computer won't recognize friends ns4g but does mine?

I wanted to root my friends ns4g but my of won't recognize it. He had a galaxy s 2 as well and it was the same issue.
I installed pdanet, Samsung drivers, different USB cords, nothing!
When I plug it in nothing happens, then about 5 mins later, USB not recognized. I manually tried to put the .inf file through the windows 7 wizard and still nothing.
Like I said my ns4g works perfectly fine, when I plug his in nothing works at all. I don't understand this at all. I have a 64bit system and made sure everything was for that. Can anyone help me out?

Can you mount usb in either recovery (if applicable) and android? Have you tried with usb debugging enabled? Also, does it show you no android device is connected in device manager?

in device manager it only shows unknown usb device with "!" symbol. Yes for debugging, and cant boot into recovery, there is no recovery as its not rooted.
help someone please! lol
There was something i read about the fast charge widget messing up the ability of the nexus to properly connect to the computer and a fix. Part of its design is to block USB file transfer when connected to a computer. There were several phones that couldn't connect after loading the widget.
Before i go and waste a bunch of time researching and digging for this. I would like to know if your friend has installed the fastcharge widget on his phone.

Its soo strange. I plug my phone all good, I plug his NS4G, no detection. It's strange.
Same thing happened when i was trying to root his tmobile gs2. No driver worked.
did you install tbe drivers by booting into bootloader while pluged in?
Sent from my LS670 using XDA
yeah, didnt work. Factory Reset the phone too.
Try a different USB port on PC and pull the battery for a min.

Try drivers from Samsung support page. It took me a bit. But usually the pdanet drivers work. You could try another pc that does not have the drivers for the nexus.

I have completely lost connection with my computer. It does not detect the phone at all during standard usb to phone connection nor does odin recognize a phone being hooked up. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help.

Try deleting the Samsung drivers on your computer and let Windows find them for you or switch usb ports or check out your Device manager and see if there are any problems in there... Assuming that you are running windows? Hope this helps...:good:
Options
1.try another computer
2. Dont use a usb hub
3.try a different usb port... stay a way from usb 3.0
4. It might be a bad usb cable
5. Uninstall the driver then reinstall them(install if youb dont have it)

Thanks for the advice guys. I tried a different cable, USB and deleting the drivers. It doesn't detect my phone at all after this.
I'm pretty sure it is an issue with my phone. I plugged my wife's s3 in and instant detection. I'm gonna call vzw and have a replacement sent.
Thanks again for the help.

Be sure debugging is off, or the drivers will not automatically download. Switch back on when you start using Odin

USB connection Problem

Hey guys, I have a usb connection problem with my galaxy r. I haven't found a similar thread in this forum here yet so I hope you guys can help me with that.
If I plug my phone to the PC (Windows 7 x64) I hear the typical response tone that it is connected. Just a second after that the tone for successful disconnection comes up and nothing except for charging happens. Then I unplug the cable and put it back again and all the sudden it has been recognized. I can normally go to internal and external sd card. Sometimes copying files from the phone to PC fail too. I have no idea for this weird behavior.
My phone is on stock 4.0.4 rooted and on 3.1.10 titanium.s-rc-2 kernel
USB debugging is on
I already tried to clean the micro usb port with a tutorial of telmosousa but it didn't work for me so maybe it could be a software problem but I have no idea.

First this belong to Q/A thread.

it is compatible with 64bit windows 8 also.
I suggest you take a backup of your current rom using CWM, Flash any gingerbread stock rom and check if it problem persists. If it does then you have a hardware issue, if not, then it's definitely a software thing. Also, do check your drivers installed in the PC as they do play a role in communicating with your phone. I had a similar issue once and it turned out that the rom was absolutely fine and my drivers were having issues. I sorted it out and my problem was solved
Happens to me when I connect the phone with capdase (ignore the spelling ) case on. Try connecting to the PC without case.

Usb problem...

Hey all,
I recently got a set up to get my HDD contected to my note. (with y cable for power suply) However when i plug it in it just says usb connecter connected and after a few seconds it tells me that mass storage is savely removed? this happens while the cable is still plugged in and im just waiting without touching any cable etc. Any idea what could cause this problem?

I had read about this somewhere. Cant remember.
I think its an issue with the driver. Just to confirm try another PC.
Or else the usb port or cable is screwed.
Hey thanks for responding . A pc isn't the problem. I'm currently one step further which is that the note 10.1 does see that a usb device is connected but doesn't recognize it as a mass storage device. Any ideas what could solve this?

Ums does not work with stock roms

I'm not using a stock rom though...
I'm not on stock and I had to use a USB OTG app to mount my drive. I used USB OTG Helper but there are others out there that work too.
Will try that but in case it doesn't, what rom are you using?
Thanks again

I'm not sure if my drive is NTFS or exFAT, that might make a difference. I'm also using a powered USB hub but have been able to mount the drives using the USB OTG helper app that I mentioned. USB seems flaky to me tough... sometimes it works without a hitch, sometimes I have to mess around to get things to connect properly.

I was connecting fine over USB before installing AR and now it reboots the tablet whenever connected to the computer. Strange issue. And a frustrating one because I like to use USB a lot for transferring music and other files.
Installed AR 8.0 because from the description it sounded very "stock" but runs a lot better. It appears it isn't as stock as I had hoped.
