Just FYI for anyone who will buy a cell phone or tablet from a wireless company in the US, regardless of brand. Tmonews .com has an article about a new law that takes effect on the 26th making it illegal to unlock your devices and then use them on other networks.
I don't know if the Transformer line have cellular models in the US yet. It may also depend if Asus sells them directly to customers carrier unlocked (like Apple or Google does) and you just pop a simcard or through cell companies. I can see how it would be nice to have 3g/4g signal on a tablet instead of turning on hotspot from the phone.
I hope this gets turned down fast as yet again they are telling us what we can and can't do with a product we buy in this law.
This is a SIM unlock matter with US carrier branded devices.
It was announced last year. So this is not really "news" at this point.
IF you buy a carrier branded device that is SIM locked for a specific carrier network, "legally" you'll only be able to get the SIM unlock code from the carrier. And given how carriers have rules for giving up the unlock code, that favors them.
Anyone who buys an unlocked device has nothing to worry about. Our Infinities are not locked to any carrier and no US carrier has a branded Infinity. So this is not a concern for us.
Personally I'm with a pre-pay carrier and intend to buy unlocked devices going forward anyway.

The rational for the most recent decision is this. Someone signs up for a 2 year carrier contract and gets a phone free. (Or they get it at a price much lower than the actual cost of the device.) They then unlock that phone via 3rd party means and then leave the carrier. The EFT fee they may pay ends up being less than the cost of the device they obtained for free. So the carrier ends up losing a customer and losing money overall. The ruling is to thwart that kind of thing, or at least that's the position being taken.
People who pay full price for a device should still be able to get the unlock code and people who obtain a subsidized device should be able to get the unlock code after they've either paid off the device or meet other obligations as determined by their contract. They will need to get that code from the carrier, but they should be granted it. (I must say, I asked T-Mobile USA for unlock codes before I left them and they didn't send them to me in the timeframe they promised. I waited a week and got nothing. I ended up SIM unlocking on my own via a utility on this site.)
Anyone who buys an unlocked (International) device can do as they please and its already SIM unlocked anyway with no carrier ties.
Bottom line, don't buy things with the carrier's brand on them. Things with their brand are subject to their rules.
I've left the full service carriers and I'm not looking back.

They should just adjust the contracts. In Switzerland you have to pay a lot if you want to buy out of a contract.
Or you quit it but you can't do that before the end of the period written in the contract. This way I can unlock my phone as I want but the carrier still gets his money.
I don't understand why America needs a law for that.

Here in Quebec (Canada), they passed Bill 60 not far from three years ago, they basically take the rebate they gave you, divided by 36 months (3 year contracts). It repays slowly each month, if you wanna break the contract you pay what's left to pay. Let's say a 600$ phone you got free (so 600$ rebate), you pay 300$ to cancel after a year and a half. Carriers still are the winners in this, but it's not too bad if you got a good plan and you're a bit lucky. Before, we had to pay 20$ per month remaining on contract + variable cancellation fee (depending on the carrier), minimum 100$ and pretty much no maximum (I think it was 600$). Back then, I had to pay over 250$ to break a 1 year remaining contract with Rogers with a crappy Samsung sliding-keyboard phone).
How are early cancellation fees calculated in US? I'd love to see how in hell can someone pay his phone cheaper by going with a plan and cancelling out immediately.

I think that T-mobile price is off contract, not unlocked. Please correct me if I am wrong as i too am looking to pick one up, but live in another country so must get it unlocked as well.

Word around the campfire is that T-Mobile isn't selling this phone to non-contracted customers, and if you contact them with the device and request a code they'll deny it. It's a t-mobile exclusive phone in the US, and they won't offer up unlock codes unless you're a customer and wait the 90 days, or the phone is no longer exclusive.
This is all rumor so far, but here was a T-Mo sales rep in another thread that said they were given new directives regarding selling off contract phones to non-Tmo customers.

So your telling me, since I am no longer under contract with T-Mobile, I can't walk into there store and purchase the device for $499 retail even though I am a T-Mobile customer?
I would hold off on buying this for AT&T (or other providers) until we get clarification on what bands it supports and how to enable them if needed.

I also called T-Mobile and told them I was interested in buying a G2x off contract but only if I were able to get a unlock code for it right away. They said it wouldn't be a problem. They did it for me and my Vibrant back in July and I wasn't on contract. Did you word this wrong because if you purchase a phone through a upgrade and are under a contract they will not give you a unlock code since you do not own the device. If you aren't under contract and you purchase the device at retail price then it's all yours and they will give you a unlock code. Whether or not you have to be a T-Mobile customer is a different story.
If you have to be a customer then just purchase the phone retail and sign up for the cheapest plan possible. Ask for a unlock code which you will get within 3 days and then just cancel your account.
I did not word this wrong. I was very explicit about wanting to buy the phone, without contract, and that I am NOT a customer of T-Mobile. Every answer I received was very candid about the fact that their policy is to not give out codes and that they do have a SIM subsidy program for those who are T-Mobile customers. I will add with a grain of salt one might get lucky when they call up customer support and find a representative who does not know the current policy and unlocks your phone. Not likely.
I am going to take a chance and go through a website and pay $14.99 for it.

They have always unlocked devices for me but I guess it's because I am a T-Mobile customer, just not locked into a contract with them. My Vibrant being my most recent device I got unlocked. Just called customer service and they emailed me the unlock code 2 to 3 days later.
Thats kind of childish on there part. There not losing any money by giving you the code since you paid for the device in full. They may have made a little bit of money off you actually. I'm sure they didn't have to pay LG $499. Like you said, your best bet is to pay a 3rd party $15 for a unlock code.

So I'm thinking of buying the G2x and than buy a phone on contract with AT&T that has good resale value and sell it, and in a way AT&T is subsidizing my G2x.

If you don't currently have a contract with AT&T, one has to ask. Why the hell would you want to go into one? If your in a area where T-Mobile has service, they have less dropped calls and faster download speeds. Every phone I get through T-Mobile has been better call wise and data wise than my Wifes iPhone with AT&T. We live North of Baltimore.

I stated nothing as fact... bro... I was merely stating that in another of the AT&T threads, someone who said they worked for T-Mo was told just what I wrote. It seems very location specific. Some people are being told they will sell them one, some are saying that they'll sell it, but not give them the code, and some are saying they're not being offered either. So, there you go... bro...

It has always been T-Mobile's policy to only give unlock codes to current customers who have been with them for at least 90 days and have a good pay history. This is something new if they now allow non customers to buy a device and obtain a lock code. Since the unlock codes must come from LG, I highly doubt anyone would be provided with a unlock code on the day they buy the phone.
Could be some CS reps looking to up their quotas by giving less than accurate information. Get it in writing before you buy.

This is not a surprise. Itbis not locking down the OS just the SIM lock and nice you pay off the contract you will be able to unlock it. Or if you pay full retail price for it. Either way they have the right until you pay for it in full. Most Americans think they own the device when they get a new contract but this is not true. They don't own it till the contract is up.

This I do understand, but whenever I upgrade through T-Mobile, I never actually use the phone I upgrade to. IE: I upgraded to a HTC Marvel I never took out of the box and currently use a SGS2 T989 which I rooted and unlocked. I only unlocked it for resale value. Anyone who thinks they 'bought' a phone for $1 with a two year service agreement is a fool, yet just the prospect of criminal charges for someone who bought an unlocked phone from Ebay worth $400+ for only $150 aggravates me to no end...
Just another reason I should consider going contract free. Unless you are grandfathered into some unlimited plan, you can get Straight Talk (GSM on At&t/T-Mobile) with unlimited text calls and ~2GB data for $45 a month. I am currently with Verizon but am growing tired of how carriers think they own your device and lock it down. Hopefully the Nexus 4 will set a trend of making more phones available without a contract at an affordable price.
I made this petition to accomplish the goal of allowing all consumers to choose a their carrier while keeping the phone they already have with another. This could enable greater competition between carriers and therefore fairer terms and lower prices. I would appreciate your support.

Let me explain something us Brits learned a long time ago. Some may have realised this but i constantly see people calling phones a $200 phone. ITS NOT
PHONES ARENT SUBSIDIZED - A Subsidy implies that Carriers are giving you a "subsidy" or "Discount" on the phone when you take out your 2 year plan with them. - THIS ISNT TRUE.
You pay 200$ for the Phone and XX per month which is actually significantly higher than the UK pays even with our 20% VAT taken into account.
The Price of a Nexus 4 is $349 Retail and $549 from Tmobile USA - Plus you have to take out a $90 a month plan which gives you unlimited calls and data and texts.
A sim only deal is $69 per month so you save $20 a month which is $480..... (not sure how long contract this is, its not clear)
So HOLD ON! You pay $200 + $480 = $680 Extra to get the Phone included in your deal?
$680 for a Phone which Retails for $349 from Google? or $680 for a phone which retails from Them! at $549
So basically these are called CARRIER SUBSIDIES because YOU are subsidizing the carrier! AND they want to lock YOUR phone so you cant take it elsewhere????

I was just reading an Engadget post about how unlocking a carrier locked phone is illegal now, in the US anyway. It was long, but really didn't answer the question I had. I am on T-mobile with no contract and like to switch phones every few months. My most frequent stop for phones is eBay, although recently I've gotten unlocked phones from Amazon and Newegg as well. On eBay, I usually buy a locked carrier version (usually At&t) because they are usually cheaper than straight unlocked ones (carrier branded) and much cheaper than international unlocked ones. Then I buy an unlock code from eBay for a few bucks and voila. For some phones that are carrier exclusive or have no international variant yet, this is the only way to get them.
Does this new rule apply to me? I'm thinking no since it is second hand after all and I'm not the one who signed the contract, but they are vague about second-hand unlocking. I also sell my phone on eBay once I'm done using it.
I think of you as you are to unlock the phone which actually was first locked.
This is my opinion, now expect others to comment on

As i know in europe and maybe also in US it is not illegal to unlock your phone - if you have no contract anymore with any provider !
Because it's "YOUR PHONE" and if you make the choice to cut it in small slices - why not - it is yours (when paid) !
But one decision - you have to unlock yourself - as i know it is not allowed by companies in US !

Yeah I have no idea what some of you people are talking about. Or understand the Engrish. The phone is sold to an end user and the software is also licensed to them. This is the relationship between the carrier and the user entering a contract. However, I don't buy direct from the carrier or sign any contracts. Thus, I am not a license holder at all. Furthermore, the ruling allows for "legacy" devices to be unlocked and sold. Legacy device would be loosely understood as second hand, basically what I am buying and unlocking.

Basically whatever the normal price plan is for the phone you add 1/20th of the phones price to that normal plan pricing. After 12 months minimum but before 20 months you can choose to trade in your old phone and get a new one. There are no down payments for either phone so there is that, you can get an iphone 5 64GB for no money down if you have good credit XD. BUT you would then pay an extra 40 some per month to make up for it. The average installments would be $20 with smartphones usually costing about 400 or more so after 12 months you would have paid $280 or more and if you sold your old phone you could buy a new one.
POINT: This is a blatant rip off, save up your money those months and sell the phone you save money, the price you pay for this simply gives ATT a larger profit, they will then resell the old phones you turn in which by the way have to be in perfect shape or there will be an additional charge for repairs. Interesting... I called this when T-mobile started this. It is almost better to pay full price for phones now... If you sell your current phone 300-450 and put the rest on a credit card you will still be saving money or just pay it up front. But the cancel at any time is pretty cool idea
But this may lead us to buy unlocked devices and not deal with locked bootloaders....

some quick calculations
S4 is $32/month. Would have paid $384 in a year.
If I just bought a Galaxy S4 for $629. I could sell it in a year for ~$400, so $229.
or
use your upgrade. $149 is what I spent on my Galaxy S4. Sell it for $450 in the Fall, pick up GNote3 on CL, etc. $500-550. Only out about ~$100-150. Sell GNote3 in the Spring for $450-500 for GS5.

I would really like them to do what US Cellular did. They brought back Unlimited Data, but it's ONLY valid for the 2 year contract length. After that, it's gone. If you try to break your contract, the ETF is $$$$. Let them charge $40/month for it. Still worth it over Sprint/TMobile, IMO

I would really like them to do what US Cellular did. They brought back Unlimited Data, but it's ONLY valid for the 2 year contract length. After that, it's gone. If you try to break your contract, the ETF is $$$$. Let them charge $40/month for it. Still worth it over Sprint/TMobile, IMO

I think it's nice for it to be an option. Myself, I just buy out of contract if given a choice. It's nice to offer this and the traditional plan so some people who cant afford a phone outright can get one.
All the carriers new deals are all including trading in smartphones as of late. Usually you get ripped off as you can sell it yourself for more $. Selling my year and a half old iPhone 4S almost paid for my S4 in full out of contract..
20 month = same as unlocked upfront
12 month and upgrade to newer phone = 60% of cost one year lease... what a ripoff

AT&T users better read the fine print before rejoicing. You’re still paying the same high monthly contract price for your no-contract plan. AT&T is double dipping into your wallet when those contract monthly plans has a subsidized phone calculated into them but you’re paying full price for the phone.

Absolutely. Repost, Facebook, Tweet, Link, +1, etc. Maybe this will cause a Xbox One-like backlash.
What I hate the most is that the majority of the people on this forum are stuck with AT&T until 2015 :crying:
You guys do realize this is an OPTION right? They are not forcing you to take this deal. Verizon also has a deal starting like this one as well. At least att is not forcing those with unlimited data to lose it when they want an upgrade like big red does. Att has always given OPTIONS unlike other carriers who force things down your throat. Remember that when you start typing your rant about how att sucks.
Also when was anything perfect at launch? I'm sure as time goes on and voices are heard, this plan will get made to make more sense.

While it is an option, for now at least, so many people will fall for this scheme. People like my iPhone loving mother who is persuaded by "as seen on TV" adds will probably fall for this no matter what I say. Or teenage girls who beg their parents for the latest and greatest.
All they have to say is "NEW DEVICE EVERY YEAR". That's it. People will be overjoyed and they will make billions. Only our small subset of users will actually do the math.
Yeah att is simply bartering...if your selling something at a garage sale you always start with a high price and slowly lower until you reach an agrrement...att wants to make as much money as possible so they will start high and hopefully lower to find a price they still make profit and that people will go for...and as stated this plan is only a choice, we arent being forced to use the next plan

I have a $285 etf right now
Say I early upgrade to a s3 mini at $12/mo ($250 full price) with the next promo. I can just pay off the $250 and leave with no penalty? Cheaper than paying my etf and I can sell those phones as new because I wouldn't keep them.
