Hi, I had not used my xoom for a few days and the battery completely drained. After I charged it, it started asking me for a password on boot. I never had entered a password or encrypted anything. I am running rooted 3.2 and can get into clockwork recovery (v3.0.2.8). I did a data wipe/factory reset and on reboot it still asked for a password. I tried calling Motorola for support but they aren't helpful because I am not running the stock recovery/rom. I saw other threads closed with this question because people thought the xoom was stolen so I took a screen capture of my google account with the xoom under it (attached). I can upload my receipt if necessary. Please let me know if you have any suggestions on how I can completely wipe the xoom? I hate to think the xoom is "bricked" just because I cant get the password off.
After a bit more work it seems that I can mount and format everything but the data. Is there a way to force the data to wipe?

If you get the xoom to boot up into a screen but its asking you for a password why would you think to say its bricked. Bricked is up until a lil while ago something you dont come back from. Although there are methods for our Xoom to recover from even a near fatal collapse.
Ok now to try and help. Did you try and load up a recovery all over again. See if you can get to your sd card and put clockwork on there and try again. Also is it possible to get into your fastboot. If so you may need to find the images for your Xoom and using Fastboot restore all images back to stock.
I would recommend fastboot erase userdata & fastboot erase cache.

There is a fastboot command to wipe but I don't remember what it is.
Good luck.
on edit: what bwcorvus said.
wipe
Thanks for the advice. I was able to boot in fastboot and erase userdate and cache but it didnt solve the problem. Is there a place I can find the specific image to flash? I am using a US WIFI only Xoom running 3.2. Thanks!
still having problems
I did some research and found the image files for my xoom. I followed the directions to flash a new image on the xoom using the following commands:
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem lock
The xoom is still asking for a password. I am completely out of ideas on what to do. Please let me know if you have anything else I can try. Thanks!
Then maybe the rom you used has a password. Or like my stepson did put one of those stupid apps that pretends to scan your finger print! There are apps that use a password and you don't even know it! It may be asking for one of your passwords for an account you have. Try all your passwords and see if it works. Even if it was stolen it would be easy to wipe. Most people already know that. You may just have to redo your root from scratch.

I have tried every password I use for anything. I even tried all my wife's passwords and the usual default passwords. I took a look at all the recently installed apps using my google account and there is nothing I see that should require a password (I can post the list here if that would help). When I reboot the xoom displays a green outline of the andriod guy with a zigzag line cutting him in half, does anyone know if this is caused by a program or the xoom encryption feature? I thought that what I did with fastboot would completely wipe everything. Is there another method I can use that will provide a more thorough wipe?
Thanks!
Sounds like it's encrypted. If you didn't do it, well then your out of luck. It won't encrypt on it's own though. I would take it to wherever you bought it from. If it's stock and not rooted motorola would fix it.
Sent from my ADR6400L using xda premium
It is rooted and using CWM, so I don't think I can get moto to fix it. Is there anyway I can get it to stock while its encrypted so I can get them to fix it? I am just so confused with how this happened. I know that I did not encrypt and I have no idea how it could of happened.
Any luck with this?

One time bigrushdog offered to fix anyone's xoom for a hundred bucks. I'd take him up on the offer.
I am helping a buddy with his Infuse 4G, and his USB port is broken. He has a stock rom on it, but it's still rooted. He needs to replace it for a CLNR replacement phone but we gotta unroot first. How can this be done without ODIN? In the stock recovery it has a flash package option, can it be done that way? If so where can I find the file? The only problem is that SuperUser won't go away lol
Are u going thru att to get the phone replaced if so i sent mine back with root still on it with no problems so to speak but see this thread for further info and see if its something that will help u out at least deleting the system files. Just an idea
I figured it won't be too big of a deal as long as it looks stock with no special boot animations or something, I had a friend return a phone to T mobile that had root but nothing otherwise, stock recovery, etc. But my friend is quite worried because it can be an insane .
won't doing a factory reset from settings > privacy unroot it? it wipes your SD card, so this should be all that you have to do...

I dont think that unroots it...i think there is a master crazy dialer code that might. i was undery the impression that factory reset is just the same as wiping data

I am running cm10 with CWM recovery. I am looking to make my phone secure in the case it gets stolen. Pretty much everything is accessible through the recovery what can be done about it? Can we put a password on the recovery? Can i go back to stock recovery using cm10?
I know there is no such thing as fool proof but i would atleast want it to be a little difficult for a thief to get into my phone.

Have you tried looking at the encryption option? I think once enabled you will need a password even before getting into recovery.

I did.
It says it needs an hour to complete and that one cannot go back. Does it have any drawbacks to the user itself? Or is it just whenever you reboot the phone that it needs a password?

Put pin, password or pattern and relock bootloader. That's the only real secure way. With an unlocked bootloader there's always a way.

Have already put pattern but locking the bootloader seems too much no? Is it even possible with CM10?
And I keep USB debugging off so no one can use adb.

Even if you keep the bootloader locked if you got a custom recovery, it is not safe. The only way to make it real safe is to flash stock recovery, lock bootloader and then put a pin or pattern password.

Too much? It takes someone knowledgeable 5 minutes to destroy a password, pattern lock or pin if the bootloader isn't locked.
Say you flash back to stock recovery. That's fine, but with an unlocked bootloader I can flash back to a custom recovery, get full adb access, mount your SD card, peruse your stuff, remove the lock and boot the phone if I want to. If you lock the bootloader, I can't flash a custom recovery.
The downside is pretty evident. With a locked bootloader + a stock recovery, you can't update your custom ROM, not without unlocking the bootloader. And if you do that, you wipe your stuff.
I'm with polo on this. Like he said, someone with a minimal amount of skills can do whatever. If your phone gets stolen, the phone would get blacklisted and if it's gsm it might work on another carrier. If you had lookout, you can find the phone through gps on their site and remotely wipe it.

I know the not being able to flash anything without reset is the bummer but i will still be able to update the cm rom through ota right?

Your better off not doing it, is just to much hassle for what? A thief doesn't care about your data so it doesn't matter to them about passwords etc. They'll just wipe the phone and sell it.

I guess you guys are right I might be taking this too seriously. I dont keep any confidential pictures on my phone and I unlinked my google account from my phone with a simple change of password from the desktop just to check if it really works. So all my accounts will be protected. Whatsapp will be taken care of by blocking the sim.
Thanks anyways everyone.

Depends what kind of data you have. It's not about the thief and if that person cares about your data. It's about if YOU care about your data. Some people have critical information on work projects or similar on their phone, and the worst thing that could happen is for that information to get published/shared.
Personally, I keep nothing too important on my phone, I have a remote wipe installed, pattern lock, but my bootloader is unlocked and i have a custom recovery. It's good enough for my needs, but I understand it's not the ultimate security either.
Ultimate solution I've found. I have a small amount of c4 inside the battery compartment linked to my unlock code. Wrong code.... BOOM!

The only really personal thing on my phone is my convo with my girlfriend but i am no celebrity so i am sure it won't be published.
And i have always been very particular about not keeping compromising photos or videos on my phone or pretty much anywhere. See them once on the big screen and then destroy the SD card if you know what i mean.

Install any secure app like lookout so that you can wipe remotely. Also, record your IMEI so that if your phone gets stolen, you can call your carrier and block it.

I went into stock recovery yesterday, after purchasing the phone to wipe cache.
I like to do this with all my new phones first.
When I pressed on wipe cache, it brought me to a menu that asked Mr what package to install, and was showing me my SD card.
I then tried to data factory reset, which from my experience with other phones acted as though it was wiping cache??
It seems the recovery has 1 to many install from SD card options, and is throwing the menu off.
Can anyone else confirm this?
From what I can see only an update would fix this.

Can confirm that selecting "wipe cache partition" shows SD content. Don't want to try the factory reset though.
Reflashed stock recovery twice, it seems broken by design
This issue has to be reported to Motorola.

same here , the listing in recovery just isnt acurate to the job it performs ! - crazy slip up from Moto on this one i think .
My People! I have come for you!
Yes it is buggy, however totally operable!
"What? What did you say Ehsan? What knowledge do you have to bestow upon us, oh learned man of the great metropolis?"
Simple really. Whatever you want to select, just select the option above. Wipe cache is Wipe Data/Factory Reset, and Wipe Data/Factory Reset is Apply update via ADB.
So while I sit here and bask in the rays of my awesomeness, you should go and spread the word.
Excuse my overtly conceited bragging. I only got there coz of you lot anyway

HELP
Yesterday i got 4.4.4 ota and downloaded it. but since i was on twrp, i tried moto tool to flash stock recovery.. but now when i open recovery it shows an android with warning sign.. whats wrong?? where can i get the stock recovery?
try flash your fone using fastboot and not a twrp recovery
I'm RMA my nexus so I tried to flash stock thru wugfresh kit but it gets stuck and won't do it . so I remember I did a back up as soon as I rooted my phone so I restored that . I unrooted thru the superuser app its self , I went thru advance options on the root kit and flashed stock recovery and then relocked my phone.
My question is if that's enough to send it back? Will they be able to tell I rooted ? After I relocked it it said it reset the flag as well so I guess that's good .
The reason I use tool kits because its easier and I'm nervous to try it without a tool kit.
Thanks

If you're on stock rom, kernel, recovery with a locked bootloader and "false" tamper flag, you're good to go!
Can't help you out with the toolkit problem as I don't use them and I feel it does more bad then good! :silly: You yourself aren't able to make out what part went wrong with wug's toolkit whereas if you have downloaded the stock factory images and did it manually, we could help you out with the error on that particular step!

Yes, you can but make sure you don't restore the EFS.. If you do. Then your new phone is SCREWED! That's why I never recommend anyone restoring backups of different phones!

Yes, everything looks peachy!
If you're not sure whether the tamper flag is reset or not.. Head over to bootloader and use this command : fastboot oem device-info
If the tamper flag is set to "true" then you haven't reset it correctly. If it's "false" then it's all good!
BTW, why are you RMA'ing the device?
