How to move apps 2 sd card? - General Questions and Answers

Hello everyone,
I have a serious problem here. Before factory reset everything was just fine (except that my phone won't connect to my google account, but i already fixed that) Now after factory reset i can't move some apps/games to my sd card! It's annoying because i have just 160MB internal storage, and now its just less than 50MB free. I heard about all those app2sd apps and so on, but they say that it's can't be movable to sd card, when i was able to do so before the factory reset. And this is a little bit tricky because before factory reset i had this option in my settings->application setting menu, a "preferred install location" and when i pressed that it opened a menu with 3 options:
1.Removable SD card
2.Let the system decide
3.Internal memory.
When i selected external SD card it allowed me to move almost every app (except updates to the pre-installed apps like maps, youtube, facebook etc.) But now there is no option "preferred install location"... So the question is: what i should do, to make this option available again?
My phone is Huawei U8650 sonic with stock-fresh android 2.3.5
I was googling for this problem for 2 days and no answer. I also posted this problem on 2 other forums but nobody knows the answer Please can somebody here help me? I would really appreciate that.
English is not my native language - sorry for mistakes and have a good day!

You could try the app - Link2SD - this app can move almost everything because it replaces the original app with a link.
Apart from that, have u tried to boot into recovery and run repair permissions and cleanded dalvik cache?
Hope I could help.

Really, Im not advanced enough in android to understand what you mean, but i think I'll try to do what you said, and i will reply if it worked or not. Oh yeah does this method need root?
EDIT: so i entered the recovery menu and all I got is;
Reboot system now
apply update from sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
wipe misc partition
touchscreen firmware update
I wiped the misc and cache partition, gonna try now.
EDIT 2: no luck, wiping cache and misc didn't helped...

Link2SD is an app you can dowload from the play store - yes I think it needs root - but it is simple as simple to use like any app 2 sd - just give it a try :fingers-crossed:

S2E is good one

[GUIDE] Titanium Backup Move app data 2 sd

Hi guys,
Titanium backup is a great root tool. Apart from creating and restoring backups Titanium Backup can also move app data to sd.
[ ROOT REQUIRED ]
I tried it and faced a few problems.
"NO DATA 2 SD DIRECTORY DETECTED"
After searching for answers and not getting any i decided to create a answer my self.
So this is a step by step method to move app data to sd using Titanium Backup
(BASICALLY FOR NOOBS BUT OTHERS CAN PARTICIPATE TOO)..
1. Root your device following the tutorial for your device
2. Create 2 Ext Partition (if you have already done so please move to no. 3)
a. switch of your device and take out your sd card.
b. use a card reader to plug it in your pc ( DO NOT USE YOUR DEVICE TO ACCESS THE CARD)
c. download Mini Tool Partition Wizard
d. create to ext 2 or 3 or 4 partition..Make sure the partition are primary and not logical and the partition size b/w 1GB to 2GB
e. After partitioning insert your card in the device and reboot the device.
3. Download Titanium Backup
4. Open Titanium Backup and open the Backup and Restore Tab.
5. select a SINGLE APP and long press.
6. Select "move app data to sd". A popup will open asking to create a data 2 sd directory.
7. Select Yes.
8. Batch select all apps and move app data to sd.
9. Viola see how your internal memory jumps up..
10. Have fun :good:
PS- If anybody finds any error in the guide then please tell me.
PS- Moderators if you find this post has been discussed earlier then please close this thread.
And REMEMBER TO SAY THANKS..

I don't use link2sd..I use a2sdgui..but with whatever knowledge I have I don't think that should affect titanium backup..try reinstalling titanium backup and wiping dalvik cache...

hey mate
sorted it out..
the answer was actually in the titanium backup website in the faq page !
for any1 with the same prob(for CM& based roms):
had to create a folder called "app" in the sd-ext partition
then relaunch titanium backup and then u see the sd-ext part in the home screen of titanium.
in backup/restore long click, as nilot said, long press on an app, now theres an option to move app data to sd !
select and it asks you if you want to create a /data2 folder ! do that, and thats it!
thanks for the help nilot!

The pro version just unlocks additional functionality in the free version. You have to install the free version as well as the pro version.
EDIT: Anyway, I also can't find the option to move app data to SD. I guess I'd need to create the "apps" folder on my sd-ext partition (although my SD card's 2nd partition is FAT32, would that stop it working?). This would be great if I could figure out how to do it though.

I think you're right, I am using FAT32 because I use Link2SD on stock ROM, and my stock ROM doesn't support ext partitions. It'd be a bit much hassle for me to change things just for this, I'll leave it as it is for now.

i think 2nd partition needs to be ext3 or ext4. theres a guide in this forum how to do that. you need a pc with an sd card reader tho.
after that just follow the steps on this thread
How to add the APP folder
Ok ,, this sounds so noobish, but how can I add the folder 'app' to my 2nd partition of my SD card (which is formatted to EXT4) ...
Can't read the EXT4 folder on the SD card when plugged into the PC, and I've tried using a browser on the phone, but can't see the option where to view the EXT4 partition either ?!
EDIT: Nevermind, changed to a different ROM and S2EXT works fine now
I used NextApp's FX program with the Root Module installed (I'm sure Root Explorer would also work). I then used the "Filesystem Manager" tool and navigated all the way to the bottom looking for "Other Filesystems". I found one named "/data/sdext2" which appears to be my ext2 partition.
I think this may be my problem because I still cannot see the external partition even after adding the "app" folder. I did some digging in TB's FAQ and found the mentioned requirements for Data2SD:
http://www.titaniumtrack.com/kb/titanium-backup-kb/titanium-backup-technical-faq.html#requirements-for-using-move-app-data-to-sd
20. What are the requirements for using the “Move app data to SD card” (Data2SD) feature?
Our Apps2SD scheme creates symbolic links (one per app) at /data/data/com.x.y that will point to somewhere within an ext2/3/4 partition on the SD card.
The supported mount points for the ext2/3/4 partition are:
/system/sd/ (“classic” sd-ext)
/sd-ext/ (“Cyanogen” sd-ext)
/data/sd/ (“MIUI” sd-ext)
So for Data2SD to work, you’ll need to ensure that your ext2/3/4 partition is mounted at one of these locations. Then create an “app” directory at that location in case it doesn’t exist. Once it’s done, you’ll see a free space gauge for it in the Titanium Backup welcome screen, and you can then long-click on an app in the list and hit the “Move app data to SD” button. Once you do that:
First, Titanium Backup will look for existing symbolic links in /data/data/ and attempt to re-use the same target location, if it lies within the ext2/3/4 partition.
If it finds no existing (or no suitable) destination, it will propose to create a “data2″ folder within the ext2/3/4 partition, and will then move the app’s data inside it.
So by default, you’ll get: /data/data/com.x.y => /system/sd/data2/com.x.y (in the “classic” sd-ext case).

I'm guessing that because my partition appears to be mounted at "/data/sdext2" instead of "/data/sd", that this is why TB cannot see it. However, as far as I'm aware, this was created by Link2SD without any intervention on my part. Does anyone know how I might be able to go about changing this? Or could I somehow put in a link to it elsewhere?
Thanks for any help that you can provide!

It seems I have the same problem. I tried to rename the directory using Root Browser Lite (the only free root file manager I was able to find) from "/data/sdext2" to "/data/sd" but the operation failed (I'm not sure but probably the first time I partitioned my SD I called the Ext2 partition labelling it sdext2).
Thanks in advance to anybody who can help me with this issue!

Did you try rebooting the phone or recreating the links after you renamed it?
I've emailed both the developer of Link2SD and support for Titanium Backup. I haven't heard back from anyone at Titanium Backup yet, but the developer of Link2SD was rather informative. He said that the main reason this isn't yet supported is because app private data must maintain the ownership data from the app that it goes to because of the way that Android sandboxes apps. This isn't possible on FAT/FAT32 partitions. Only ext2/3/4 supports it. This is probably why it only works for these filesystems with Titanium Backup.

I created a primary ext3 partition that is 1.2GB. I do not have the option to move app to sd or move app data to sd, any idea why?
Edit: I can't locate the ext3 partition via root explorer...does gingerbread not support apps2sd? or is my issue due to the fact that this is a stock GB ROM?

How do I wipe EVERYTHING on my internal SD card?

Hi guys.
I want to start from scratch regarding my internal SD card (not using external) because I have a lot of junk that just needs to be gone.
I'm running Synergy's latest nightly and am going to flash a Jelly Bean ROM (don't know which yet) right after wiping everything.
So my question is, what do I do to make sure everything is wiped, and my phone still boots? I'm kind of lost.
I usually use CWM to flash, so what do I press in order to do this?
Thanks a lot.
You have to format the internal card with a filw explorer or in a recovery

Understood, but what happens when I try to reboot back into the phone; will it boot normally?
I ditto this question. I'm also curious about formatting my internal card and starting from scratch. I know factory reset from cwm recovery doesn't do it. I'm afraid to just start doing things and bricking this thing. Even though I was told by my cousin who has flashed many phone its very hard to hard brick a Samsung.

In all honesty I'm not sure if it will erase settings as well. I don't believe it will but some app settings are stored on the SD card so you may have to sign back into some things.
If you choose to factory reset at the same time then yes you will have to reset everything up.
One thing to keep in mind if you make your backups without selecting external SD card they will ask be erased so you will have no backups

Quick question, I just went into cwm recover then mounts and storage and the options are
Format /cache
Format /system
Format /data
Format /preload
Format /sdcard
Would sdcard be the internal sd card?
It sounds like that wipes everything (rom and all) and not just internal sd?

You just want to wipe internal? if you want to be safe, take out your external sdcard, then do format /sdcard . This will wipe your internal sdcard.

Question...

Hi all,
for some odd reason on my Tab, I am being stopped from doing any downloads. I was looking at my storage and i noticed that the download folder only has 192mb used with 10.15gb free. but it almost looks like that download folder can only hold 192mb of data. Is there a way to change this or do i constantly need to monitor the folder and move items as it fill towards that 192mb?
this is happening on both stock (previous install) and CM10 (currently installed). I just think its a little wierd...
thanks for the help in advance
May be try another browser and check setting/storage to see if the internal sd card ( not external) has space
Also in cm10 try to delete cash and dalvik cash no factory reset ( not to lose your apps) and fix permissions
Also try to delete data and cash of your browser and any app which is called download from setting/apps
If this does not work try format internal sd ( have not tried it) or try factory reset( will lose data) and clean install

Everything has plenty of space, it just won't save in the downloads folder. I used dolphin browser and it allowed me to select a different place to save and it worked fine. Now I am also noticing that i am being stopped from installing apps via amazon app store. I thing it may be due to this mystical "space Limit" that i seem to be experiencing... how would i go about formatting the internal sd card if needed?
I think found in mounts and storage in cwm but have not tried it afraid may cause serious problems
Or use stock firmware from www.samfirmware.com which has a pit file and check repartition in odin setting before flash (do not check if no pit file put in odin) but afraid may cause serious problems if done incorrectly
Use as last resort and read before applying may brick the tab permanently if done incorrectly
Try clearing cash from setting/apps for Amazon store and try also fix permissions and delete cash and dalvik from cwm (no or less risk)

If you cannot install from Google Play store, then the problem could not be related to phisical free space.
This is a way to get over with installation problem:
1) You need to be rooted
2) You need a root explorer, such as the one in Rom toolbox pro by Jrummy
3) Go to the "data/data" dir at the root of Adnroid filesystem
3) Locate the reference to the app you cannot download
4) Delete it
5) Search XDA forums for more detailed info
At this point you should be able - at least - to install
[edited] Look for instance at this thread, where a similar problem is discussed (cannot add link, remove spaces from URL)

Error 492 Google Play

Hey guys i am trying to solve this error for last 4 days but it looks to be imposible. I did read here on the forum and i tried this :
- format cache and dalvik cache
- format micro sd card
- reinstall rom
- clear cache and data from google play and google framework and google services
- reinstall like 3 ROMS , 1 is energy`s rom, 1 was rayman`s rom and another one. Now i am running energy`s last rom.
I can download app from google play but the ones that require wifi , the big ones like : Dungeon Hunter 3, Heroes and Chaos, Zombiewood, NFL Pro 2013, Brother in Arms and so on...
I dont know what else should i do, i did read all forum topics and tried everything. If anyone can help me please do it. Tyvm and have a nice day.
It might be internal sdcard related. Try deleting .android secure directory or back up your Rom and stuff from internal card and format it.

How should i do that ? ... Ty
Format card? Well plug your tablet to your computer. Backup everything you need from internal card. Reboot into recovery and backup your Rom, Obviously to external card. After everything is backed up then you can format your internal card from recovery. Option should be under mounts and storage.

i dont have option to format sd card ... only to partition it. If i whipe to factory reset, sd card wont get format ? Because i did this factory reset and it still dosent work , same error 492 , i am loosing my mind
try a cache cleaning app from the playstore.
if you cant download any then someone recommended the following.....
cache cleaner pro
if its classed as warez then feel free to have it removed and apologise in advance.
Tyvm for ur advice but its still dosent working , i was about to sell my tablet because of this error... Its allmost imposible to fix it or it is really imposible ?
What recovery are you using? Format card option should be under mounts and storage.
You can also find nv flash files in development section and nvflash. That will format your card and everything else. Make sure to read and make a backup of all your stuff.

This is my first post in XDA but I've been a regular reader as a guest. I've developed an app(Apps2SD) to move/link apps from internal storage to external SD card with lots of other cool features.
Apps2SD has evolved from being an app which moves app data to sd card to an all in one app with many cool features.

Prerequisites:
Device needs to be rooted
Root permission should be granted to Apps2SD
2 partitions on external SD card (use Apps2SD partition tool to create 2nd partition). 1st partition should be FAT/exFat partition, this is your standard SD card storage. The second partition is used as the internal storage for linked application files and can be ext2, ext3, ext4 or f2fs.

HI Vicky,
let me first congratulate you on making such a useful app which has so many features .Does this app has any device limitations .
thanks , Rahul
Thank you Rahul,
There is no device restriction apart from Android version. The app is supported on android 2.3+.
The app won't partition my 32gb card on a Galaxy Tab 4. It keeps instructing me to reboot. Once I do, the app auto-starts, attempts to partition, then fails. Again, it instructs me to reboot. I never make it past this point. I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have. Thanks for the app and your time.

Hi Cablespider,
Do you have busybox installed? can you check if fdisk is available in your busybox version.

The partition tool should work now. I've updated the apk in google play. It should be available after 3-4 hours.
Thanks,
Vicky

Thanks for the information.I tried it on my Samsung S5 and it works .The interface and visualizations provided to showcase the space used by different files are really impressive and easy to handle.
good app.
link2sd and apps2sd when used together have conflicts.
App needs stability. every reboot asks for another soft reboot to mount partition.

Please let me know your device name and android version. Ideally Link2SD and Apps2SD should not be used together. Any app linked by Link2SD will be detected by Apps2SD. If you still want to use them together make sure to deselect auto linking in Link2SD or Apps2SD settings.
As for the post reboot issue. Can you recreate the mount script from Apps2SD, reboot and try again. If the problem still persist send me the content of /system/etc/install-recovery.sh file.
running moto e 5.1.1
using only apps2sd solved the issue. and mount scripts were done from apps2sd itself

Great. Please rate and review on google play if you like the app.
but every restart forced a soft reboot to make it work.
jus fix that, it'll be great.

Can you send me the Android version. Also are you able to Link/Move apps manually? Also do you mean after selecting all the options in auto link option, newly installed apps are not being moved to SD card?
Please note that Auto link Settings is for newly installed applications. To link existing apps select the app and link individually or use Multi select to link in batch.

It still running it original android version of 4.0.2. Yes, the newly installed apps are not being moved to the SD card. Everytimes I install new apps my internal storage decreases. I will try further more to see....
Thanks
