help with the sgh-1727r (rogers canada version of skyrocket) - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Hi, I just got a S2 LtE rogers version sgh-1727r
I looked for a while and maybe you can help me quicker.
I am on GB and wonder what a good rom is for this ? ( i need otg, and other features, but like stable)
How can I root this on a mac (the easiest way) and is it the same as the ATT version ?
Thanks everyone ! I hope I am not cluttering up the board as i am sure the answers are there somewhere but my slow internet is bluetooth over a blackberry so as you imagine i am kind of having a hard time.
I am a noob to this

Use kies to upgrade to ics. Then read the stickies in the i957 development section. That'll get you started.

Hi blendobass!
The correct model # is SGH-i727r. CyanogenMod 10 has USB OTG and is stable.
Read this thread for how to get CWM which you will need to flash CyanogenMod.
Or you could do as jd1639 says, update to ICS over kies. However i don't know if stock ICS has USB OTG enabled or not. The model he is referring to (i957) is nonexistant so i don't really know what he's talking about. Reading the stickies in the i727 forum won't hurt though.
Good Luck!

My mistake on the i957 (it's att tab 8.9) meant the i727 in my post. I have both devices.

note: if someone can post a step by step guide to install cwm/twrp with a mac so i can put it in the 1stop sticky, that would be appreciated

Hi, thanks for asking.. I flashed cw 5.0.26
Does it matter what kernal i have or anything else ? I am a noob thanks

You need to flash gapps if you're using cm base Roms
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2

Are you using vincom's superlite rom? If so you probably need to flash the gapps package to get Google and play. Did you back up anything before you installed cm10 and of so what did you use.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app

No I just flashed CM10 and it is so smooth, I am comparing with a NExus 4 right beside it and it is almost as just as responsive pretty stoked about it, glad i upgraded this and it feels like the vanilla android everyone talks about.
I don't think i can restore from backup as i messed up a bit flashing the rom (didn't clear the cache and stuff in the right ordeer so I think my last rom on there might have GB but I would hate to go back and mess with everything now, maybe I will just dig around for a good package to flash with all the google apps, just not sure what one to trust or if it will give me all the new google features (athough I don't like google now)
thanks guys and if any noobs are totally clueless like me about how to get your Rogers LTE S2 from old GB to unlocked and JB with Cm-10 I don't mind helping you out, it is confusing but once you do it, it all makes sense and I could now prob do it in a half hour while having a beer.

Dude, you have a pretty phone that doesn't do anything. You need to flash a gapps package for it do anything more than make phone calls whether you like Google or not. Before you do anything else read vincom's stickies in the development section. If you read them close enough you might find the gapps package you need. After you do the reading and if you have questions then ask.

how do you know you dont like google now, if you were coming for gb you never tried it, its the best app google has ever made, imho, its really not confusing if you read a few of the "updated stickies", but looking at your profile you should at least know of gapps, i didnt list the gapps packages because each dev has there own preference for their rom, and team chopsticks still recommends the 0726 on their website

CM 10 install abort on SGH-I727R from Rogers
I have a SGH-I727R from Rogers (Samsung Galaxy II S LTE). Thanks to the great information I've found from some of you, I successfully installed CWM 5.8.1.3 using Odin and rooted so I could back up with Titanium backup.
When I tried to install the Skyrocket zip for Cyanogen mod 10.0.0, the install (from CWM) was aborted. It seems to check for SGH-I727 but not with the extra R. So I'm stuck at the moment.
I'm digging and digging through the forums as someone has to have run into this before me. Just in case anyone notices my post and doesn't mind pointing me in the right direction, I would be grateful. Thank you.

If it aborted, the likely culpret is that you didn't do an MD5 hash check on your rom download.
Check vincom's stickies, you'll find a md5 checker in there. The site you got it from will have the hash # on that page. Download, and check it twice. Once on your computer and again once you have transfered it to your device. "Dev-Host" is notorious for borking downloads.

Not the m5sum

Thank you for the quick reply. Unfortunately that isn't it. md5sums match website/computer/sd card on phone.
The error I see during install seems pretty clear. It shows the installer checking build properties and device properties. It looks to be checking for various device strings like skyrocket and SGH-I727. My device from Rogers is SGH-I727R so doesn't match causing the install abort.

Update cwm to sk8's newer one or use twrp
if using cm10 for skyrocket, it will install on att and rogers phones without problems

The brick bug Stock ICS

Does the new ICS for the att version of the skyrocket have a safe kernal or is it still at risk of having the emmc corrupted?
Update: it seems the brick bug is in the stock ics 4.0.4 , use caution when wiping back to factory. Entropy512 has informed me that the att rom has the mmc_cap_erase command in a host file where rogers does not. I will update as soon as more info becomes available to me.

You are incorrect as from what I understood from your original post you were on a rooted gb rom and flashed back to stock in order to update via kies. 1st off, gb kernels aren't an issue and 2nd, Odin is a safe work around the brick bug issue.
No where in here do u say that u went into the settings on ics and performed a factory reset. That will be the true test
Edit: I revisited your post and see youbdidnt specify gb vs ics but even if u were on ics and went back to stock this wouldn't be a problem through Odin

I didn't read anything offensive. I was just trying to wrap my head around what u were talking about. I understand now. As I stated in my previous post though the gb kernels were not affected.

[Q] Q: How do I flash a Kernel with CWM embedded?

Hey guys.
Sorry for asking this, but Ive looked everywhere and tried 2 different kernels flashing with both heimdall 1.3.1 and 1.3.2, as well as odin 1.85, and I just cant seem to find the right kernel that will flash properly through either flash tool. All I want is to be able to put a new rom on this cappy I JUST picked up.
I have a motorola atrix and a samsung s2 skyrocket, and change roms like theyre underwear, lol. But with no official CWM that can be easily flashed through rom manager, Im having trouble figuring out how to get CWM on this thing. Im not a noob, troll, or whatever else people hate, lol. Its just that there arent any new threads in the cappy section about this, and all the instructions Ive found are at least a year old, and havent worked for me.
I just need to be pointed or guided in the right direction so I can start having fun with this bad boy!!
Thanks guys!!

I had problems too, i just figured everything out and this worked for me.
To do this successfully, you need to be running gingerbread on your cappy.
1.) go to goo.gl/4vmPj
2.) read EVERYTHING and make sure you understand it.
3.) Download the Odin and Kernel they provide. I suggest the kernel v.7.05 that it recommends too because other versions gave me problems this version worked the best for me.
4.) follow all the steps there, it will give you cwm recovery AND root.
5.) Now you can flash any rom from the captivate android development section like normal but this first time when going from stock to a custom rom, DO NOT wipe data/factory rest in cwm!!
6.) Enjoy :good:
Appreciate the help fellas!
I followed your link anwarkhan and corn kernel worked perfect! Just complete my first backup of stock, so now its time to play!! lol
But my ACTUAL problem turned out to be odin not recognizing the device. I didnt realize it wasnt seeing it.
Turns out I just needed to update the samsung drivers on my computer. I thought I had done that through heimdall, but aparantly not.
Just went in and manually updated them and voila!
Thanks again guys
Yeah, Heimdall installs it's own drivers, and those specific drivers are only installed to the one usb port that u r connected to with ur phone at the time of the install.
Odin uses the drivers from samsung.

Not sure why that was posted. Because when flashing a Developer's Rom it will be a full wipe rom anyway, usually.
And ur apps and other stuff u should have backed up before flashing.

No problem, I'm glad everything is now working for you. && you aren't supposed to do a factory reset when coming from stock because if you do, when you flash the rom and kernel and reboot, your cappy will directly boot into recovery and recovery only and wont boot into the rom. That's the problem I had a few days ago which took me a while to figure out.

Galaxy s blaze root

Hello guys im really getting sick of the bloatware on Blaze and want to get rid of it and i also want to root my phone. But im literally terrified to do so cause i heard it could possibly brick and i seriously do not have the money to buy another phone and also this is my first time rooting. My blaze is currently running 4.0.4 ics with Baseband version T769UVMB1. It would be a great help if someone could shed some light on the possibilitiy of bricking or destroying my phone, also it would also be great if someone could give me a root guid that is compatible with my Blaze and its baseband version

Hello, I am new to this forum and just got my blaze 3 weeks ago. I know the phone is kind of old but I like it. Any way when I get a new phone the first thing I do is root it and get rid of the bloatware, but after 3 weeks searching and following 2 tuts from other sources I managed to softbrick my phone. All is good there and I managed to un-brick the phone both times. My question here, is there any tuts out there that can help me root my phone? I will post the specs below and hopefully someone can direct me to the right info.
Any help is greatly appreciated and If I missed sonething I apologise as I am in the U.S Army and usually very busy. Thanks guys!

First, you should never look at "other sources". XDA is the best and you should have started here
Second, wrong thread. Questions belong in the General section.
Third, if you look there is a [GUIDE][ICS]How to root stock just a few posts down.
Lastly, this phone has never been on 4.0.3 lol. There was a recent baseband update to UVMB1 but it is still 4.0.4 just as UVLH5 was 4.0.4.
Hope that helps

It seems they want us using the guide for UVLH5 although I followed it precisely (twice) and was unsuccessful.
you can disable bloatware apps with ics
you'd be able to permanently remove them with root
From what I've read on here, the Blaze is pretty hard to brick and if you do, fairly easy to fix. There's a thread on here by beastmode that lays out the exact process in rooting our phone running ICS. I'd never done it before, either, but followed the guide, Googled the info I didn't know, and it went seamlessly.

I believe the Beastmode thread you mentioned is the one I linked, and followed twice, unsuccessfully
It lays out instructions for rooting our ICS Blaze on firmware UVLH5. I (and the op) have firmware UVMB1. They are both ICS 4.0.4, I wouldn't think the process would be any different, and I don't know why it didn't work for me, but it didn't.
In that thread, there are a couple people using that version of ICS that rooted just fine. Odd it didn't work for you. Did you place the zip on your internal or external sd card?

I tried a few more times today, and in combination with a separate root toolkit app, allowing "save root," I've gotten it settled.

Trying to install CM10.1. Issue on intallation. Now what!?

I rooted my phone with out issues. Then I installed CWMR without issues. I wiped data/factory reset, then wiped the partition. When I tried to install the ,zip, I got an:
getprop("ro.build.product") == "
skyrocket"
E:Error in /emmc/cm-10.1-2013072
1-NIGHTLY-skyrocket.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
It is still sitting here in recovery mode, as I'm afraid to reboot it. What should I do?
Thanks!
Courtney (Mr.)
how did u root before you installed cwm
are you sure you have a skyrocket model # i727
Well I tried it again, this time using the latest stable version instead of the latest nightly. Same results. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.
Courtney
Yes, I have an i727 Skyrocket.
Here's what I did to obtain root:
http://droidnoob.com/how-to-root-galaxy-s2-sgh-i727quick-guide.html/2
I downloaded Titanium backup afterward and it said I have root.

Goomanager > twrp 2.5 > cm10.1.
Need more info than that, read stickies
I already have CWM on the phone, although it is obviously an older version. Can I use the .zip file on this page to update CWM by installing it in CWM recovery? I read the stickie, but it did not mention this specifically. I would prefer CWM over TWRP snce I'm unfamiliar with TWRP.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2264240
IS THIS even the latest version? I found the link in the stickie, so I assume.

I installed the latest CWM recovery, then I got another abort trying to flash CM. This time it is telling me that I need a newer radio. I read through the stickies, but nothing was listed. Here's what I found in the Development forum:
5: RADIOS/MODEMS
Quote:
RADIO aka MODEM aka BASEBAND=Amss.bin & Mdm.bin.
The Radio Does Not Get Wiped During A Cwm/twrp Wiping Process.
The Radio Does Not Get Backed Up By Cwm/twrp Backup(nandroid) Method.
For Custom Roms The Radio Is A Seperate Flashable File Unless The Rom Dev Includes It In Their Rom.
What Ever Radio You Had Before Flashing A Rom Will Still Be Your Radio.
What Ever Radio You Had Before Restoring A Backup Will Still Be Your Radio.
Flashing A Full Stock Firmware W/Odin Will Replace Your Existing Radio (Amss.bin & Mdm.bin) And Ril/Csc Files.
Ril And Csc Files Do Get Backed Up & Restored Through Recovery.
Some Flashable Radio Zip Files Come With Ril And/or Csc Files - Since They Are Restored And As Such May Improve<>Impede Functionality Of A New and/or Existing Radio When Restoring A Backup.
Afaik Mohan_kr's Radios Do Not Include Ril/Csc Files.
Roger's radios are RAT Unlocked, which means the Network Mode in settings will work.
ATT radios are RAT Locked, Network Mode changes will have NO effect.
Flash Radio Twice W/out Cable Plugged In
WHAT IS RIL: A Radio Interface Layer (RIL) is a layer in an operating system which provides an interface to the hardware's radio and modem.
WHAT IS CSC: the consumer software customisation and is specific to geographical region and carriers. It contains the software packages specific to that region, carrier branding and also APN settings for data connection, MMS etc for your service provider. CSC has nothing to do with what languages the firmware supports and it will not add keyboard language support.

Next, I'm unclear (yes, UNCLEAR as I'm NOT as experienced as many of you are) as to his instructions:
* Upload to your device.
* Check md5sum (download link has the md5sum)
* Usual flashing precautions should be taken.
* Choose zip from CWM.

Again, I've read the stickies. About 8 times now. In fact, I read though all of them again before posting to be sure the radio issue wasn't covered in the sticky, because if it was, I knew I'd get some condescending response.
Back in October, I bought my first Android phone. It was an i897 Captivate. I liked it very much but was not pleased with the fact that GB 2.3.5 was the best I would every get in an OS. I found this site, registered on the forum, and began researching custom ROMs. The members of the Captivate forum were welcoming and helpful. I was able to flash my phone with their help. The first flash resulted in some corrupt files, but they were able to work me through those as well. Since then, I've been running a stable version of CM10.1 without any problems.
I enjoyed the process of flashing the OS. I'd been thinking of an upgraded phone, so I found a new i727 on eBay. Last week, before buying it, I read through the sticky for the first time. It seemed like it would be as straight forward as the i897. Well, it is an entirely different animal. I asked a few questions that I thought I'd get clarification on before flashing. Yes, I jumped into the CWM/stock 4.1.2 question without going back to research it in the sticky, but it just popped in my head and I threw it out there. Sorry. So to answer your question; no, I don't know what I'm doing. However, I am wiling to give it a shot. If you're unwilling help, why not just skip my post? Some one who is willing to help will come along.
As for bricking my phone, that is what I'm trying every hard NOT to do! If at some point in the past, some one has become angry with you or other forum members because they locked their phone, I'm not that kind of individual. I understand the risk I'm taking, but at the same time, it is just a phone! My goal here was to get the instruction necessary to successfully flash a new OS. That is what this forum is intended to provide, correct? So far, the members a have been the exact opposite of the i897 forum. Did they roll their eyes as they typed in the messages that helped me get a stable OS on my Cappy? Maybe. But they were still willing to help me through the process.
This is my last post. Thanks to 'holeindalip' for the only friendly response I was given on this forum! To everyone else; I'm out of your hair now. I mean you no ill will. Farewell.
The 727 and 897 aren't that different
Both use Odin to flash stock firmwares
The kernel contains the recovery on the 897 and on the 727 the kernel and recovery are on seperate partitions
Besides the partition differences its very similar the way you flash everything

[Q] Most Recent Methods?

I just acquired a Samsung Infuse so am entirely new to this phone, have rooted it so far via SuperOneClick, but am not having issues determining the best method of acquiring CWM so as to flash some new ROMS.
there are a number of threads i found through searching the forums but all of them seem to be quite old (2011). one of them i tried and it did not work, i got an e-signature failed error of some kind and couldn't find any solid information about how to get around that.
for someone who is brand new to this phone and disgruntled with the performance of 2.3.3, what would be the best method to utilize to get CWM to get a good ROM on this thing?
Thanks in advance

thanks alot fellas, i appreciate the generous replies. i hadn't seen this one anywhere yet and it looks to be pretty straight forward so i'll try it out and let you know if i have any other questions! cheers
You guys are lifesavers. Is there a ROM any of you would recommend to load straight on the phone easily now that I have rooted GB 2.3.6 with the red CWM??
Looking forward to not having to deal with the brutal battery life and laggy response of 2.3.3!
Yeah u can flash all the ROM over 2.3.6 thru CWM, But just keep in mind if u want JB then u have to flash ICS first the JB.
There are many many good GB roms with good battery life i will not name them just flash and see which suits u the most.

well i figured id update here as everyone's been such a big help and i really went through a heck of a process trying to get things back to a working state.
from CM9 i attempted to flash SlimBean and then got stuck in a boot loop. from there, i made the terrible mistake of panicking and trying to flash back to CM9, which seemed like it worked until i got stuck in a boot loop again. i panicked further and tried to flash all the way back to stock GB 2.3.6 which just messed everything up and i bricked it. could not get into download mode, nothing. i realize how stupid all of my mistakes were but thats what learning is about LOL.
finally today i uninstalled all versions of KIES, reinstalled latest version of java, used a different (non-front panel) usb port, with a brand new usb cable (one of my quality ones from a branded charger vs. the cheap one i was using previously). finally got ODIN to recognize my phone and flashed tue UCLB3 Unbrick w/ Root and it worked like a charm.
so i'm going to start again and try to work my way more carefully up to the top haha. thanks again for all the help guys, really appreciate the great infuse community here :good:
