Which recovery is most popular or recommended? - Asus Transformer TF700

I've read a few threads regarding root and recovery. I have unlocked my device and am very close to the next step, recovery installation. What is the consensus on which recovery to use? Clockworkmod or TWRP? Is there an advantage to one over the other?
I am running an ASUS updated 4.1.1, unlocked successfully using the unlock (UnLock_Device_App_V7.apk).

TWRP 2.3.3.0

My vote is for TWRP. It has more options and is a bit more user friendly.
My real answer to this sort of question is that you need to try both yourself and see which works best for you. A lot of people will disagree with me and give legitimate reasons why CWM is better. Plus I'm sure that you didn't end up on xda because you like other people telling you what to do otherwise you would be running locked stock

For us, TWRP, the best version is not the latest but the 2.3.1.0 (the latest is 2.3.3.0), very stable and works everytime, specially with CleanRom. The interface is very user friendly.

TWRP 2.3.3.0 here.
No problems with it yet.
I don't see a difference with it from the previous version.

New TF300T few questions on rooting etc

Hi all,
After much debate between the Infinity, Prime and TF300 I settled on getting a TF300T. It's new out of the box and is charging up right this minute.
I am coming from a Motorola Xoom which I had rooted running EOS JB ROM and TWRP Recovery.
I've been having a look through the TF300T forums and I see that the general advice seems to be not to be not to upgrade OTA until I have rooted and unlocked, is this correct?
I have seen SparkyRoot but was wondering lso what is the best and easiest method for rooting ? I am in the UK so I guess I have to make sure I find instructions etc for the UK version?
I am not looking to install any custom ROMs yet, I want to see how the stock goes for now. I am interested in getting it rooted though because I have apps like Titanium, Sixaxis Controller which need root privileges.
I guess you guys in this corner of the forum will be seeing more of me now that I have a TF300T. I will see how I get on with this tablet for a week or two before I finally ditch and sell my trusty old Xoom.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm assuming you have not taken the jb update. Here's what happened to me...
I was on ICS. I rooted using the debugfs method, in the Dev section. I took the jb update and thanks to ota rootkeeper I was able to restore root with no issue. I had to wipe data shortly after to resolve a problem. That caused me to lose root permission, and I couldn't get it back without unlocking and using step 3 of the jb root guide, in the general section.
I'm now on stock jbwith an unlocked bootloader, twrp recovery, root, and a couple of tiny mods from the Dev section. I consider having twrp much better than maintaining the warranty because you can easily do full backups, and flash things like mods and root. Hope this helps you.

I have rooted my TF300 first then I was on ICS.
I have used [ROOT][TOOL]Debugfs automated root v1.9 - update 7/2/2012 - Prime & TF300t by sparkym3
and after I have backuped my root with OTA rootkeeper - free version.
I have checked my root with Root Checker-Free version.
I have updated my device on JB by OTA without problem.
Restored my root with OTA rootkeeper.
And finally, I have unlocked my TF300 with Asus tool: UnLock_Device_App_V7.apk
Restored my root with OTA Rootkeeper.
Installed TWRP Recovery, which is for my part, the recovery which is more stable
And actually, I'm on [ROM] Asus Custom Rom - JB Overclock Edition V01
If you want to know more, click on my sig and go to see the index for TF300
Awesome thanks guys
It's finished charging now, I've turned it on but disabled wifi so I don't get any OTA updates.
Looking at my build number it says: IML7K.WW-epad-9.4.3.26-20120416
I seen some guides where the build number was important, I'll go back and double check.
I'll check out those links Phil. Going to make sure I read everything properly as I don't want to end up bricking my new toy

Seeing as my build number said 9.4.3.26 do I have to update my tab first?
Just want to make sure I don't balls this thing up so early lol

Do I just do an OTA update to get it up to 9.4.3.29? I guess there will be a succession of small updates and as long as I stop on that one?
Sorry for having so many questions.. don't mean to be a nag lol

So, you can stop the OTA updates at v9.4.3.30
Thanks Philos64 shall do it now... will report back later with the results.
Big thank you coming your way

All so far so good...rooted and all backed up, just waiting for the JB update to download now.
Just one more thing? I was looking at TWRP and I was wondering how to install it? I know that on my xoom I already had CWM installed and just ran the file from recovery which gave me TWRP but how can I do that with the TF300T? On the TWRP website it says about 2 options:
Install Fastboot Method & Install ADB / Terminal method...both of which I have never done before. Is it easy to do as long as I follow the instructions?
Thanks again
Well everything went well, I got root access which confirmed with root checker, done a backup of my root and installed the Jelly Bean update but then Root backup lost my backup

Then you'll need to unlock the bootloader and follow the guide in the general section to get it back. For twrp, go find links to the twrp site in the Dev section. They have install instructions on the twrp site. Again, you must unlock the bootloader to install it.

That is brilliant news! After reading the forums here i thought that now I was on Jellybean I had lost the ability to root. I guess a lot of people don't want to void their warranty by unlocking their bootloader. I had to do the same thing with my xoom.
I will give this a try sometime this week

Installing CLEANROM on a TF700

Recently traded in my iPad for the TF700 and I can say I am indeed pleased with my decision, however I am new to the community and have been recently searching for a method to install CleanROM to make my user experience even better, or as it so claims. So far after reading through a couple of guides I have been able to unlock and permanently void my ASUS warranty, which I am okay with. I'm not sure if I'm rooted or not (lol) but I tried running SuperSU and it said something about not being able to write into the binary files so I guess I'm not. Anyways heres a quick breakdown of what I've done and what I'm hoping to accomplish.
TF700 32 GB
I got the OTA update for JellyBean 4.1.1
I didn't do anything until now so I guess you could say I got the tablet with Jellybean installed on it vanilla.
Unlocked Successfully.
Flashed CWM recovery but for some reason when I try to enter from the boot loader menu the screen just flashes on and off. I've transferred the clean rom zip into the root of my device already. anyone know the problem? Thanks!

I think I know where the little confusion comes from: you need root access to install TWRP from GooManager, but not for flashing anything from recovery.
So, if you've unlocked the bootloader and flashed CWM already, you're all set to flash CleanROM. As you should know, you will end up with a pre-rooted OS, so there's no need to follow through with anything other than customizing to your liking in-OS.

What is the current version of CleanROM
I have done a little research and CleanROM appears to be recognized as fast, stable, and not having issues with assorted features (i.e. GPS, camera, etc.). I have had a hard time finding what the most current version is, what Android version it is based on (i.e. 4.1.1, 4.1.2, 4.2.1, etc.). Is there an offcial site, including downloads someone can point me towards? Thanks.

Hi,

Unlocked bootloader and installed TWRP, I first installed the wrong version of TWRP which had no touch input and had to force a reboot, this is the one that works for me:
http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/tf300t/openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-tf300t-4.2.blob
Thanks for being a good test bunny for me
Backing up my Smart Tab now and will see if any of the roms work.
*Update*
Tested the CM 10.1 experimental and the CROMi-Xenogenesus 4.4.1.
CM 10.1 boots and all but touch input is weird, the "Show touches circle" is persistent and input is like using a mouse; I have to drag the circle around and double click for a single click. I tried the latest two versions and had the same issues.
CROMi boots and doesn't suffer from the touch weirdness, but WiFi and Bluetooth are not working. I suspect if I were to pull libs from the ME301T stock I will be able to get them to work in this rom but I'm done testing for now.

I want to start building some CM10.1 and other TF300 ports. But I cannot seem to find out how to get a system dump that is needed for the porting. I can copy /system to my computer, but it seems like there should be more needed than just pulling that in order to do a proper port.
Maybe it is just a matter of copying /system for the needed dump, but if anyone can shed some light on that for me it'd be a great help!
To simplify this process for everyone I wrapped up all the the necessary tools, images, drivers, etc for getting your ME301T unlocked in a single rar file. This works as of 5-13-2013, I'll update it as needed when people report problems with any of the included stuff.
I cannot stress enough that I am not personally responsible for any of this work, I simply combined it for simplicity. Please follow the links below to thank the dev's that did all of the hard work for their time!
The rar file contains:
*Contains drivers for ME301T for Windows (From Asus)
*Contains motochopper, root solution for ME301T (from djrbliss, http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/15208-root-motochopper-yet-another-android-root-exploit-412/)
*Contains necessary files and brief instructions for bootloader unlock (from philos64, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1697227)
*Contains boot image for TWRP (from eyeballer, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1672108)
Again please thank the original devs!

Rooting a 4.2.1 tf300t

Now that I'm looking in to rooting this thing I'm starting to feel like this was a mistake as I'm not seeing any info on how to root with the new firmware. Should I downgrade to an older firmware? How exactly would I go about doing this? Also, are there any good guides to rooting out there?

OK things have changed since the last answer here. Do the following...
Go to the Asus site and download v8 of the unlock tool in utilities then use it to unlock your bootloader.
Once unlocked download twrp 2.4.4.0 recovery and flash it in. See the Dev section for site and instructions.
Locate the root guide in the general section and dow unload superuser.zip from it and flash it in using twrp recovery to get root.
Go to the market and get supersu, install it and let that manage your su binary.
Hope this helps.

[Q] Flashing AOKP 4.2.2 Full Functionality - Wanna make sure I'm doing this write

HI all,
I'm not new to the flashing game, but this asus device seems to be high maintenance.
I wanna install the AOKP 4.2.2 Full Functionality custom rom on my device. Here is how I plan to do it. Can someone verify that this procedure will work as I don't wanna ruin my tablet.
1. I'm gonna root my device using Unlock_v8.apk to unlock bootloader then recovery-jb.img to root.
2. I wanna use GooManager to flash the following files in this order
a) Aokp_R05.zip

1. I'm gonna root my device using Unlock_v8.apk to unlock bootloader then recovery-jb.img to root.

Be careful, which bootloader do you have installed now?
If it is 4.2, recovery-jb.img may brick your device.
If it is 4.1, I think you need to use Unlock_V7.apk.
Also make sure, which bootloader is supported by the ROM you want to install.
That it has version 4.2 does not mean it will work with the Asus 4.2 bootloader.
There are several threads on upgrading/downgrading the bootloader.
Please read carefully!

Ok dumb question: How do I check the bootloader version. I am currently running JB 4.2.1. Does this mean I have boatloader 4.2?

Not a dumb question!
Yes, if you are running Asus 4.2 stock ROM, you have bootloader 4.2.
Make sure to read the respective threads carefully. It is not well supported yet and many users bricked their devices by not reading carefully enough.
Specifically: keep away from CWM (recovery*.img) and use only the TWRP version patched specifically for BL 4.2.

All roms out except based on stock 4.2.1
Require old bootloader. You need to downgrade

Ok thank you all so much. You've been very helpful. I don't think I'm gonna root my tablet anymore. If i have to downgrade boatloader, then flash it.. It just sounds like its high maintenance. I'll just tolerate it for now. I may revisit this option at another time. Is downgrading boatloader a pain in the butt? Thank u for letting know about my boatloafer version, which recovery to root & about the downgrading of boatloaders. You've all been so very helpful. Thank you.

Thank you Kaos420. I actually am interested in flashing AOKP 4.2.2. Judging on what you've said, that custom rom should be ok with my boatloader. Is that correct?

Judging from your other comments, you have the new boot loader 4.2, right?
Sorry, but then AOKP 4.2.2 is not for you without downgrading.
For installing TWRP and/or downgrading, use this thread as a starting point; it links to others.
Of course you can skip the part about upgrading to 4.2 boot loader, scroll down a little!
[GUIDE] Update/Recovery/Root/Downgrade Android 4.2.1 on Unlocked/Locked Devices
If you don't want to downgrade, this thread lists the two ROMs that are currently compatible with your bootloader:
[WARINING] DO NOT install a recovery from 4.1 on a 4.2 tablet!
Or you might want to just wait a little. Seems Asus finally released the new kernel source code, so there should soon be more ROMs supporting the new 4.2 boot loader.
Thank u f69m again youve been so very helpful. I really dont like the latest update on the tablet. My tab seems to be very slow. I think i will downgrade the boatloader and install aokp 4.2.2..
If i could just ask though, how on earth do u guyz check boatloader versions?
