[Q] Can install a custom rom on a carrier locked phone ? - General Questions and Answers

Hey guys I bought a new phone running gingerbread and it is carrier locked.
I can and have rooted it but just wanted to know can I install a custom rom like cyanogen mod without unlocking ?
(I don't mind if it still remains carrier locked)
Any help would be extremely appreciate

Yes you can as custom ROM has nothing to do with having to be unlocked pore not.

It works even if you root your phone first.

Rooting is not a problem for unlocking. You cannot be on a custom rom unless it was derived from an official rom release. If you are on an AOSP custom rom such as Cyanogen or MIUI you cannot unlock the phone until you flash back to an official rom or derivative thereof.

And in addition to that, after unlocking it you can go to an AOSP rom and you'll still be unlocked.

If I'm not mistaken, once you unlock your phone, it's a permanent unlock for the device.
Wouldn't matter what ROM you were on afterwards.

Not true at all. You can unlock while running CM. I've done it a few times, with a few different phones.

Have you unlocked it? When you rooted, what process did you use? Since you said you're running JB on a Verizon SGS3, I would put money on your bootloader already being unlocked...

Flash rom without root?

Is it possible to flash a custom rom without root? If so, where can I find one?
Thanks for your help!

No. No custom roms unless you're rooted and unlocked. The closest you'll get are flashing Verizon factory stock roms via Odin, but those are not rooted.

What is your purpose to use custom rom without root?? Custom rom, by default required root for all the modded apps to work.

Umm, why?
I'm new and just trying to learn, that's all. I come from I phone. The S3 un-rooted can already do more than a jailbroken iphone. Almost like learning a new language with the Android and rooting.
