Hey guys, my contract expires in a month and I am looking at a couple of new phones to buy. I currently own a Droid Incredible, and I absolutely love it. The only thing that I don't like about it is that it has poor battery life, and it's kind of slow. Things that I do like about it are that I have a plethora of roms to choose from and it has great development support. Some phones that I am looking to buy are the Droid Razr Maxx HD, Samsung Galaxy S3, and the Google Nexus. Can you tell me about the pros and cons of the Maxx HD? Is the battery life really that good? I appreciate any help!
Droid Razr Maxx HD
Pro-Battery life, decent screen, battery life, S4 cpu, battery life, doesn't have an overly cluttered skin, battery life
Cons-1gb of RAM (not horrible but not that great for a device this new. 2gb is quickly becoming the standard)

How great is the battery life exactly? I'm jot worried about 1gb ram. My current phone has that and its fine.

This is how good the battery life is. The phone is in another class in this area. Best phone on verizon lineup; in my book.

Almost non-existant. The phone is amazing, but it has less Dev support than almost any phone I have owned. However, the stock JB ROM is quite good.

Agreed. The development for the Razr HDs, like most of Moto's recent phones, is practically non-existent. Battery life outstrips every other phone on the market though.

I know what you mean. I'm coming from a popular HTC phone where there are like 127 pages of roms to choose from. I think that is the only downside to this phone.
I upgraded to the RAZR MAXX HD from the original Droid Incredible just before Thanksgiving. Was waiting for the next great HTC phone but the DNA with 16g non-expandable storage (11g usable) and the small size battery was a big disappointment. I never gave a second thought to Motorola phones before, frankly because all the early ones were ugly.
But I couldn't be happier with the RM HD. Nice looking phone, battery life is incredible, beautiful screen, great signal strength on both voice and data, sound quality (streaming bluetooth) is excellent. Great build quality. The UI is pretty much stock android and very nice. I though I would miss Sense but not at all. And to me it's the perfect size, although a tad on the heavy side. New phones like the Note 2 and DNA are just too big in my opinion. 2g of ram would have been nice but other than that I can't think of anything this phone is lacking. Many reviews say the camera is inferior but it's fine for my needs. Coming from the Incredible, this camera was an improvement.
I played around with the S3 but it just seemed like the build quality of the MAXX was far better and from what I've read it has signal strength issues with the radios. IMO the Maxx HD is the best android phone on the market right now.

I also just got the razr maxx hd. So far I've been off the charger for 25 hours with 3 hours 6 minutes of on screen time and I still have 51 percent battery left. This phone is amazing.
I just wish we could root. I'm coming from a Galaxy Nexus so yeah... I miss CM. But I'll take signal and battery reliability over flashing ROM's any day. That phone had massive signal and battery problems.
woohoo
Just got my Droid Razr HD yesterday I had the Razr Maxx and decided to sell it and upgrade to the HD thought about the HD Maxx but thought if the battery can last all day on this it would be fine and well further more I stand to make more money in my pocket in the end! So far from turning on I made it down to 47% battery with the normal use of my Maxx I beleive this phone has as good a battery life as the original Maxx the only question is will they make a battery replacement for this one to give it a Maxx battery later on! Also That is From 1:00 P.M. yesterday till 8:30 A.M. this mornning 3hrs screen on time and everything else on!!!
Looking at the above post for his Maxx My battery Is lasting just as long as the Maxx 22 Hours on 3 Hours Screen on 47%!!! WooHoo!!!
Excellent phone, but the camera (especially video) is a dud

Why is it so difficult to get roms on this phone? Is the bootloader locked?

I didn't know that. All I would really want is root privileges in the stock ROM to run wifi tether, that's pretty much it.

Thinking of taking the plunge to the Razr HD but not sure what to get. Would you get the RAZR HD Dev edition or the Maxx? I will be paying outright to keep my unlim data with Verizon. The unlocked edition is tempting to mod it but so is the extended battery life of the Maxx. I'm a fairly heavy user coming from the Galaxy Nexus that wasn't cutting it in the battery department.
I was torn with the decision too (coming from a Thunderbolt), but ultimately I went with the Razr Maxx HD. I am confident enough that with fastboot and kexec (once a Razr HD hack is available), that needing an officially unlocked bootloader is not required to satisfy my power-user needs.
Loving the Maxx thus far. Rooted it within the first 10-minutes of powering it up. It just "feels" like a good phone. Great build quality (doesn't feel cheap/plasticy like Samsung phones) and the weight isn't much different than my T-Bolt. And I am really looking forward to experiencing what multi-day battery life feels like. I rocked the Rezound battery in my Thunderbolt, and for the phone got good battery life, but I would never go overnight without charging since it would be at 20-30 by the time I would head to bed.
Looking forward to what the dev community has in store for this phone!
I just bit the bullet and paid for the dev... although the above poster is accurate I just like knowing that my device will be unlocked from day 1... the battery is still miles above older phones.

Just a basic question, no trolling. Just wondering what issues people have, and wondering who's leaving it for something else.
Im still intended on keeping this, but if that HTC DNA comes out writing my return period (45 days)I might have to consider that instead.
What issues are people having?
Returning. Camera is terrible. Will either go back to my s3 or wait for the HTC DNA.
If you want a camera, go buy a camera its a phone not a Nikon. Keep that in mind.
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using xda app-developers app
It seems like the camera issues are mainly software so I assume they will be fixed. Pocket now did a video sample and it came out great!
Even if the camera gets an update it still won't be as good as the s3, but the large battery makes up for it imho.

Are the developers that are working on the RAZR HD on a different forum or just silent for now?
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk 2
Apparently TWRP from the RAZR M works fine for this (not scaled for an HD screen).
Devs are currently silent, but i suggest you saunter on over to the Dev forum on XDA and check out the JB leak thread.
After 7 days of use, I am on the fence.
With the "Smart Actions" application, I am lasting a day plus on battery alone.
The build quality is solid and like Deus_eps_machina said, it feels good in the palm of your hand.
Although intermittent, I am finding that the radio drops completely when I have full LTE to a red triangle.
With Jellybean around the corner (they're are leaks already), I am hoping that my signal issues are addressed.
If so, I will hold on to this until the next glut of "flagship" devices arrive.
I've never experienced the signal issue, but have been reading about it. Try doing an exchange?
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk 2
Perhaps with the upcoming update a new radio firmware will improve the signal quality? My Razr has been doing great.
Anyway, I'm keeping this girl. I'm on 1d and 15hrs usage with over 4 hours of screen time. My old g-nex wouldn't have been able to touch 1/2 of that battery performance. the only major issue with this phone, as others have pointed out, is the lousy camera. the camera sucks but it isn't a deal breaker.

Its so close to AOSP that I dont think you will be that saddened (at least in the visual sense). With Nova launcher and the stock jelly bean icons, you would be pretty happy IMHO.
its tough for me cuz I have the S3, so its about which one do I want more. Had I not used the s3 I'd think this phone was insane. But I know first hand the camera is well below. And with cm10 and razr m launcher the S3 is basically the same ui.

I would vote this one. 200mAh more, smaller screen and no touchwiz. Spec wise, the note 2 blows this out of the water in every category other than battery size and durability. Reception probably is better on the RAZR too.

Which should I pick up(Verizon)? I feel like it's hardware vs software (why can't I have both? ). The build quality on this phone looks stellar and the kevlar looks boss, but it's lacking atm in development. On the other hand the GSIII has a GIANT following, dozens of ROMs, an extra gig of RAM, and just seems to be cared about/getting software attention.... but it looks like a kids toy... Will the Razr pick up speed? Opinions?
Go for the RAZR HD. Software can change, hardware not so much.

Hasn't this topic been beaten to death already in other threads? Pick up whatever one you want. A bunch of thread-posters aren't going to change your mind if you're decided on one already. They're both very good devices capable of doing a lot of the same stuff. It's going to depend on your personality and how you plan to use the phone.

2G of RAM and quadcore kick ass,
check out the benchmark score and also i couldn't stand the speed of RAZR HD after i install all my apps
(restoring from back up online/cloud)
so does this means... the phone seems quick but only when it's new and empty (app-wise)
soon i load with 2 anti-virus, 4 chat apps, CPU&RAM monitor, Battery Widget, Netspeed monitor, App Protector...
and i thought i hate my HTC ONE X enough to love whatever phone next to it.
but... no, i changed it back to ONE X until i got my hands on S3 LTE version.
(this is only my point of view after using the phone *my way*)
cheers.:good:
Maybe it's just me, but even when playing with the two phones at a store, SG3 seemed more responsive and less laggy. Hopefully JB helps HD in that department.
I also think phones these days should come with two gigs of ram given how cheap ram is.
Overall, I am still undecided. Both are great phones, both have strong and weak points, which have been documented extensively by now.
It sounds like if you live in an area with weak signal, need long battery life and don't use the camera much, HD is your phone. If, on the other hand, you like slightly stronger specs and need a good camera, you are probably better off with SG3. Also, I like physical buttons (personal preference) and development is probably going to be stronger for SG3.

Comments like this make me worry :/ I have heard many things about this phone lagging more than other flagship devices running 4.04(from sleep, lots of apps, laggy camera, b/c less ram?). Can this prominent lag experience be tweaked out and/or does jelly bean fix it? :/ I like my butter....

The only thing on verizon i would trade for is the droid DNA because of the quad core cpu and 1080p display.
I did exactly that last month. Haven't looked back. But at the same time if I had stuck with the s3 I don't think i would have regretted that either. Razr HD has the great build of aluminum and kevlar, the cool led notification bar under the logo and a nice aosp-ish software build, plus battery life is better. However, run the Razr HD launcher on CM10 on the s3 and thats basically the speed experience you get on the razr. Software stutter included, scrolling left to the quick settings stutters the first time you do it after each unlock, and the camera isn't terrible but is noticeably worse. A little annoying. I'm actually debating going back to the Galaxy nexus for some pure 4.2

GS3 or GN2, anything else is a downgrade!
Maybe you have never owned a Moto. I always have until I bought this GS3 because I vowed to dump them for their locked bootloader BS! I was very sick and tired of the inability to load a custom kernel. Do you want to overclock? Do you want alot of development for your phone? I'm not saying there isn't development for moto, but it's a difficult and time consuming process. You may be looking many many months before you can just overclock. Everything is a pain because you have to work around their kernel which can't be touched. Kexec is still fairly new for Moto and last I checked there was only one custom kernel that could be side loaded for the Razr and devs couldn't figure out how to get the second core to work on the CPU. Obviously this is a hot subject with me lol. My last Moto was the "red headed step child"(BIONIC). Bionic..."The machine of all machines" Motorola's Flagship". Then 2 or 3 weeks later the Razr comes out and claim that the flagship! That was strike one and it continued from there through development struggling. The only thing thats good about Moto is there decent build quality, radios, and when something good finally gets developed for it you just about poop yourself!

i have both in my hands right now....traded my galaxy nexus for the razr HD...i love the build quality of the razr, battery life and the motorola radios..however it lacks the developer support that the s3 has...only a few roms out there....both feel about as fluid and fast as the other...so the main question is are you a crackflasher or not.....thats what it boils down to me....plus the amount of accessories for the s3 compared to the razr
The battery isn't a problem for the GS3 because of the fact you can put in a new battery or extended. The Razr line does have nice build quality but ugly design. To me, I think Samsung does a better job with their software and the camera is a lot better vs Motorola. I haven't notice any worst when it comes to wireless radio going from a Maxx to a GS3. The Wi-Fi is better on my GS3. Even though the newer Motorola phones have that "stock Android" look & feel it doesn't feel optimized yet. It lags from time to time. And the Samsung development is way better. The developers have done awesome work and pretty much negated the locked boot loader. Motorola's development is a joke. There's no reason to get a Motorola phone any time soon in my opinion. They haven't stepped anything up in the last few years except for battery life.
So with taxes I'm looking to spend about $350 on a phone with no contact. I WAS thinking the nexus 4 but people on craigslist are retarded asking $500+ because people bought out the play store with the intentions of reselling and ripping people off. So other than that I was thinking of getting an s3 or a note 1, possibly a one x.
My questions are, which carrier version, and which one should I get. I want one that I could use on family mobile with better speeds, maybe simple mobile or something. I'm into rooting and roms and overall best specs out there. So which phone should I get in that price range, and which carrier version? Processor and ppi as well as camera is most important to me.

I honestly would go for a razr Maxx hd.... Or an s3. The hd doesn't have as much rom support but it will once the price drops. Plus my battery lasts all day with super heavy data usage!

Personally, the Note is a little on the large side for a phone, however, some people like it. Would suggest that you get some extended hands on time with it out before buying. S3 has good feedback except for the build materials (i.e. drop and chip) and is roughly the form factor that I would be comfortable with and there is quite a bit of ROM development for it. A friend uses a Note 1 and swears by it, connects it up as a laptop at home with keyboard, mouse and monitor (his portable office). Haven't had a chance to test out the OneX but what I have read on the forums are that it has good battery life, solid performance and since it is basically stock, updates are quick. Just got WP8 as a xmas gift, from an SGS2. Don't recommend it, until they fix some pretty fundamental missing features but the camera is by far the best I have seen so far.

I really like the note, just hate that the bigger screen lowers the ppi. Plus I kinda feel like it's an s2, but bigger. Someone tell me it's more than just an s2 lol.

I've had nothing but good experiences with Samsung phones. Have a GS2 skyrocket and it's an awesome phone. ROM support is strong, and definitely affordable on your budget.
i would buy the htc one x+. i really like the htc os. a few years ago i bought the htc desire hd and i've never regretted it. so why not switching to another phone by htc
HTC One X looks very cute. But I heard about screen problems. I am most interested in Nexus 4, however it's not available in my country, but I would recommend it. I love that Nexus 4 has stock Android.
HTC one xl owner here....absolutely no screen problems. Gorgeous screen, great ROMs with great devs, great camera and battery life and you will find some at a very nice price. Only downside is storage and no external SD slot.
Funny u mention screen problems as I've heard the nexus 4 has some.
This phone is really good, not cheaply build like the s3 and personally I feel its better (hence why I chose it over the s3)
Oh and BTW our phones are pretty much unbrickable, flashing ROMs is a breeze and rooting can be done with a downloadable script. And they do t suffer from gs3 problems which they seem to be having plenty of.

Well, at the time of release, that was the feeling wasn't it . A 18% (I think off hand) increase in screen with a 25% increase in battery. So yea, it is basically an S2. 0.2GHz more and most everything else is the same.
I think you should go with all new Galaxy Note II has a 5.5-inch HD Super Amoled touchscreen display that supports 1280x720 pixel resolution natively which runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
