[Q] Post-flash data Loss

Hi, i've been a noob-lurker at this forum since joining the android community in december, but this is my first post so i'd like to start off by saying hello to everyone. As i mentioned before, my knowledge of this OS is fairly limited, so i may occasionally need for things to be a little dumbed down for me to understand.
That all being said, i recently decided to try flashing the Eagle Blood ROM (a T-Mobile based ROM) on my ATT skyrocket using CWM. The process was completed without my phone being connected to my computer, as i decided to flash a ROM available through CWM itself.
Before i flashed the ROM, the phone was rooted, had superuser, Titanium backup, etc. I believe CWM had a fairly recent backup of all my stuff as well. Once the phone booted into the new ROM, i noticed that i had none of my apps present, none of my data (contacts, messages, pictures, etc), was no longer rooted, and could no longer connect to the data network (my internet will not run without wifi). I do remember that at some point in the reboot process the log showed that it had not recognized my external SD card. I'm not sure but it might be that all my apps were on the card and none of the info loaded because of that. Additionally, because i am running on a mac and have not yet been able to reliably connect my phone to the computer, i do not have any of the more valuable data stored there either.
Essentially i'd like to know if i can recover any or all of the data (either through finding some backup buried in the system) or through pulling the contacts, etc. from the google cloud i assume they are in, and then lastly if someone could point to what exactly i did wrong in the process -- it would be nice to continue flashing ROMs and what not. If i left out any important pieces of information, please let me know.

Restore your backup. And ya, you either wiped data before flash or the rom did it for you. You can backup apps+data in tibu but you have to restore them after flash. That will restore app data. Not att data. Chances are your T-Mobile rom had T-Mobile apn's...ect. try the T-Mobile conversion zip. Its in the skyrocket dev section.

I'm not sure where i would find those backups -- they were all on the apps themselves and (unless titanium or CWM automatically pushes the backups to another server). Both of those are not on the phone any more (or at least not in the application folder).
I will look into the T mobile conversion, that should be a good first step.
And, a quick update, all my pictures are still on the phone. Contacts, etc. are still missing.

Did youake a cwm backup before flashing?

Yes and no. I downloaded CWM a while back and decided to make a backup right off the bat. Functionally speaking it would have all my stuff on it, but i also did not understand flashing recovery mode at that point, so i'm not sure it would have worked.
But no, not right before i flashed the ROM

Boot into recovery, go to backup and restore, go to restore. See if there is a file available. I'm kinda confused. Did you or didn't you make a cwm backup?

When flashing any TMobile t989 ROM, you must also flash the conversion package as well. It contains the kernel and other files that are required. You can find that conversion package from the t989 dev thread. I strongly recommend performing a full wipe, flash the rom again, then flash conversion package BEFORE you reboot.
You may also need to manually input the correct APN settings.

I just tried booting into recovery: the phone powers down and then just buzzes in 3 second intervals until i let go.
The only thing about performing a full wipe and working from there is that it would need a computer, which i am still currently unable to connect the phone with...

With the Skyrocket, press and hold volume +&- and power, once you see the Samsung splash, then release the power button (continue holding volume) m, wait a few seconds and it should load recovery. You don't need a computer to perform a full wipe. Ypu can download Darkside Super Wipe Script. That will completly wipe your phone (won't wipe sd or emmc memory).

Okay, i was able to boot into recovery (sorry about the confusion, for a second i forgot that it was possible to get into recovery outside of the app).
I found the backup i had made a while back (accidentally made another, current backup while doing this) and have tried loading it twice, but it throws up "Error while formatting /system!"

sorry, a closer yields the full text as...
"E:format_volume: no MTD partition "/dev/block/mmcblk0p24"
Error while formatting /systems!"

Just tried to boot back into the system and now i have a message saying
"warning
A custom OS can cause critical problems in phone and installed applications"
i can either boot into the custom anyways or "restart phone".
Restart? Or would that mean i would have to get it reactivated?

[Q] Jelly Bean update done but now hangs on boot

I've just done the JB update on my TF700, and it's now dead... :crying:
Update downloaded OK, went into the update process. Seemed to go fine. Did the "Optimising applications" bit, rebooted, and stuck on the boot screen with the spinnywheel.
I let that run for half-an-hour (tablet was getting very warm) then did a paper-clip reset (no response to buttons). Same thing, won't boot.
It's an unmodded device apart from being rooted. I've encrypted the storage; I've set the default browser to Dolphin. I have Titanium installed, but not frozen any apps.
Suggestions for how to recver from this gratefully received ....

try booting into bootloader and selecting the "wipe data" option. This will delete all your files on the devices but will also mean you can use it again

To recover from that just wait until Asus post the full JB update on their site and use that to do a Factory Restore with stock recovery (follow the how-to guide in my signature for more details).

It shouldn't wipe the sdcard, only the Wipe Data option from the stock recovery should do that.

A newbie question, though (I'm a Windows dev, and Android is quite new to me) - what would happen if did this with the .30 ICS firmware with the device in this state?

You can try to do that,but i guess it will just fail to install...You could also try the "Wipe Data" thing from the recovery ,but i don't think it will work.

I have the same exact problem.
Most probably, it's because of the encryption.
Perhaps ASUS thought that nobody would use Android encryption ...

i have exactly the same problem, was stock and only rooted. i did a backup with titanium backup and one of my internal sdcard via the dock sdcard and adb now but i'm still trying to find a way to boot without wiping because i fear that i will lose root and so goes my titanium backup..
anyways, it seems i've got adb access (no root because su crashes) during this neverending spinning wheel. i've dumped logcat during the boot process. maybe someone has a suggestion what's wrong here? i have a good understanding of linux but not the logcat output or android boot phase. it seems many services can't find files and many things fail (wifi, gps, tethering, ...), no idea if that's also the case for a valid boot, and then after some time nearly all services die.

i also tried to wipe cache via fastboot, but it didn't help.
i also think it has to do with encryption because it says something like:

Does this imply that it's not possible to recover from this without completely resetting the SD card? Does a Wipe Data do that?
Two extra things I've thought of here: I changed the encryption password from screen lock PIN to something else with EncPasswdChange; however, the "enter encryption password" screen accepted the correct password and rejected anything else. I also have BusyBox installed.
Personally I'm not bothered about having to reset everything - I'm sure JB will be rootable soon, and I have no data I care about. Very annoying for those that do have valuable stuff, though.

Downloaded from asus, renamed to 'EP201_768_SDUPDATE.zip' in microsd card,and succesfully unbriked, without loosing any data :victory:

Updated fine. Rebooted fine.
Stock, locked and rooted. Supersu+voodoo, unencrypted.
After update I had extreme laggyness only after a sleep. Cold boot seems to have fixed that.
I would like to encrypt. Has anyone successfully encrypted AFTER updating?

I've managed to unbrick mine too
However I had to do a Wipe Data - trying without gave me the dead android with the red triangle as soon as the upgrade started.
Never mind, it's back and running JB. There wasn't any data on it I cared about, so apart from losing root I'm happy.

i've also tried to fix the problem in recovery by using the zip file posted on the asus servers. it did something, had some blue progress bar, then it rebooted, had to enter my encryption password and.. it did not work :crying: still spinning wheel and it hangs. i can still use adb, my old su binary is gone, but i'm stuck as i don't want to wipe my data. i need root for using titanium backup again. and yeah, i don't want to unlock for now too :/
did it work for anyone who has their tablet encrypted?

i've tried to downgrade to ICS .30 firmware via recovery method and it worked (although i'm not unlocked). it did wipe my whole data though and the tablet is not encrypted anymore. at least i can root again now, upgrade to JB and then encrypt (i hope..)

yes, i placed the (extracted & renamed) zip from asus to my external microsd card and used stock recovery (volume down).
i've already installed JB now with root and i'm currently restoring my apps with titanium backup

[Q] Wiping Data wont wipe data.

So I am going to type out my story so that nothing is missed. I really wanna fix my phone.
*I started out a regular user. Saw TWEAKED 3.0BETA and give it a try. When the final release came out I put it on no problem.
*YESTERDAY My phone tried to update facebook, got an error like "wrong file size" or something stupid, it crashed and I could care less.
*THIS MORNING I wake up and I had a text message from my GF with a picture attached, I couldn't see the picture like normal and downloading it downloaded a blank file!
*SO, I decided to BOOT into CWM and erase everything. Wipe Data. Wipe Cache. Wipe Delvik. Then proceeded to put in Tweaked 3.1 which came out not to long ago.
*After doing so, the phone would boot into where it normally would, but then the "first start wizard" would crash and force close, along with every other process on the phone looping their crashes over and over etc.
*SO, this time I tried using ODIN to flash back to 4D. Set it up just like IMNUTS post said to, including the PIT file, did it, and booted up. SAME THING. Every process would crash including the new user wizard.
After letting it crash loop for while it finally got silent enough for me to skip the wizard and see whats on the phone. ALL MY OLD APPS ARE STILL THERE. Pandora, and all my other apps, still installed, and apparently, CRASHING upon its boot use or whatever.
What do I need to do. Ive tried to ODIN flash every stock version of the charge rom and my apps are still there. Still kicking.
Worst part is months ago my mother (who I share the family plan with) had to cancel the warranty because we are all low on cash, and even worse I lost my job 2 weeks ago so I can't get a new phone.

have you tried mounting /data & /system before you did a full format?
also you should try to re-partition when you ODIN back... that FORCES
a partition format and then re-installs the OS

mounting /data & /system would change it to say "unmount?"
but as far as odin goes, I checked the box that said re-partition. I followed IMNUTS post down to the letter, all my apps are still there.

yes, make sure it says "unmount" after you choose those options...
CWM for the charge sometimes has troubles and need a little help
get going. did you have a *.pit when you selected re-partition? it
wont do anything unless you have a *.pit file...

yeah i got the pit file, its actually link in the xda forums "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111486"
so when in CWM, make both data and system say "unmount" then go back in the menu and erase data? im just making sure better safe then sorry.

yes. I know on the EVO you needed to format a couple of times to make sure that CWM actually formatted correctly.
So you might wanna try that. also did you try going to
Privacy -> Factory data restore option?
mind you I think you do need the stock recovery option to do that but I know that works well.
Just ODIN a stock recovery.. it shouldn't touch any custom items you might have.

I can't get into the phone, it wont get past the setup wizard. all the applications force close over and over and over again. i did however use the factory recovery mode to wipe and that did nothing either....
I just set it to "unmount" on both the data and system and now im wiping. I remember when I first started with this after wiping once with CWM the next few times wouldn't take long at all because there was nothing to wipe....

so i did as you said with the data and system, wiped it, and nothing, damn crap still there.
it literally wont erase it

can you find a "clean" stock ROM and flash it and then wipe data through CWM and then go into the OS and wipe?
let me see if i cannot come up with something to wipe for you

ive pretty much done that, using IMNUTS quide, i flashed via odin EP4D or whatever the name is with the charge.pit file and reset data and all data still there.....

you MUST install an OS after you use this or you will boot loop into recovery.
this purges everything in the phone. (Non-recursively deletes)
I haven't tried this on mine as I am beta testing... but what can it hurt for yours?

Flash that in CWM (I assume it's a CWM zip? Didn't bother to check) and flash Tweaked 3.1 full CWM afterwards. Have both on the card ready to go.
Edit: oops I meant 3.2 not 1
Edit 2: nope, definitely meant 1. What am I doing this morning?

flash the wiper and then install the OS

haven't tried yet. i was given samsung pst so im trying that atm. afterwards as a last resort ill use what you mentioned.

okay, so i did it. put on cwm, both tweaked 3.1 rom and that wipe all file on the sd card. booted it up. ran the wipe file. then ran tweaked. booted up, and it stuck at the samsung logo. then i figured it was wiped, so i went and hooked it up for odin and put EP4D on it again so i can get fresh, and as soon as i got in all my apps were there, and everything was crashing one process after another.
i think the phone is borked and non recoverable.

Did you happen to mount the /system and /data first as previously mentioned?
That should have forcefully removed everything. Also on a normal basis (if not using a PIT) it won't erase /data ... it never has for me anyways.
How much time does it give you when you get the FC's until it happens again (the FC) can you try
To manually uninstall? ( Applications -> Manage Applications and then deleting then one by one? Or take titanium backup and run a batch to delete the applications in one go....

Also have you tried a non rooted ODIN? With a PIT?

tf700 Major, strange problem after update!

Everyone help! I just updated my tf700 to the newest update which was supposed to be minor. Everything went smooth but upon boot up everything went wrong. Every single app force closes upon unlocking the lock screen. I get a pop up for just about every single app that's trying to start saying sorry the app has closed. Oddly, any app that was originally on the device works OK. I did a normal reboot and then again I saw the upgrading message and another message saying optimizing apps and it counts through the apps its optimizing. Then again when I reboot fully it does the same thing. I did a cold reboot and it seemed a little smoother but then again I had the same force closes and error messages. And still only the stock apps will function, anything and everything else force closes upon opening.
I've never even heard of errors or problems such as this. I have no idea what to do and I have lots of data on the device I don't want to lose and can't lose. By the way I am rooted and I did not uninstall any stock apps. Just froze a couple. Build # now 10.6.1.14.10-20130801
Please any and all suggestions!

Sorry mate, but I can't help myself - attention everyone, here comes a rant:
I cannot believe how many people do not backup the data on their tablets! This is the second time in as many days that I read: "Something unexpected went wrong and I cannot loose my data".
If you did not back it up the question is not if you loose it, the question is WHEN!
This is a portable device! Pre-destined to be lost, stolen, dropped, submerged, spilled upon, run over by trucks - and those are everyday scenarios which are LIKELY. Don't even want to get into freak accidents... It's so easy to protect your data now-a-days! There's Dropbox in conjunction with Dropsync, there's Google Drive and a host of other solutions. There is no excuse for having only one copy of important data...... End of rant
To your problem. Before you apply a stock update you have to replace/unfreeze all stock apps. Usually the update just fails if you have frozen system apps - I do not know what went wrong in your case.
How did you update? OTA or manually?
It sounds as if your data partition is corrupted since the stock apps (installed in /system) work, but your user apps (installed in /data) do not. But that your system apps work is the good news! At least you didn't brick your tablet.
One of the stock apps is the file browser. See if you can copy your precious data to a microSD. And I'm only talking about data like pictures, files, video, projects. Don't worry about your apps.
If the file browser cannot see your data you're gonna have to get into the area of data recovery tools - lots of research ahead of you there.....
Another possibility may be - if you can access your tablet from your PC through USB - to ADB pull files off your tablet, check if your computer recognizes your tablet.
Once you have your data safe (or given up on it) you can perform a factory reset and possibly have to reflash the firmware.
BTW, if you did not protect root with Voodoo Rootkeeper before the update or if you flashed the full firmware (as opposed to doing an OTA update) you also lost root. And Asus plugged the hole Motochopper used in the latest firmware version. At this point 10.6.1.14.10 is not rootable without unlocking.

I would just wipe and start over, even if you get it functional again you could end up with problems.

Hmmm - I too think you are going to lose your data here as I can't see how you can recover without wiping if everything is force closing now.
BTW don't worry about the kernel version being cancer that is Asus naming convention. They have been using planets and have now run out so they are now using astrology instead of astronomy which is rather odd but there you go.
Previously we had mercury, venus, jupiter, uranus etc now we have aquarius and cancer......

What don't make sense and I can't accept, I've updated this device 4 times now total and never had a problem like this. Also, I've updated a few devices with frozen apps and had no problems. Are frozen apps really the cause? I can't see it.
And if I do have to wipe, and I really don't want to, will I still be rooted after wiping and is there a way to back up things since I can't use 3rd party apps? (Also, I used voodoo)
It just seems like something went wrong with the update, say something initializing or cache problem, and im sure there's an easy fix.
Please, keep the ideas coming...

I guess, I just need to clerify , stock bootloader, stock ROM, but rooted??

Correct, stock rom rooted. No interest in custom roms. I know there's gotta be something simple, maybe even a chkdsk in linux or something. I just hate to wipe n start over. My files seem to be intact and non stock apps start to open for a split second then they force close.

Any responses guys? Would really appreciate any help.

I think you will have to wipe mate as said. Painful but can't see any other way around it.

Yea, wipe, and no you won't keep root on a stock rom wipe. As I said previously even if you managed to "fix" the problem you would be creating potential for lockups/forced reboots. Your also not the first to have issues when upgrading with sys apps frozen, look around the forum, its been discussed before. Sucks, but there it is.

I have the same issue, and I can't remember freezing any apps. I don't have any critical data that I can't loose though. Still it sucks to have to wipe if there's another way.
Stock, locked bootloader, rooted. Temp unrooted using OTA Rootkeeper and did the OTA. Then upon the next reboot, all apps FC. All earlier updates has worked flawless. :/

boy, i can't believe how close i was to actually going forward with this OTA when it "pooped" up in the notification area. good thing i had just been reading xda forums and i saw a couple posts bout ppl losing root and whatnot with said update.
now i am a happy camper on Cromi-x =D
best bet as a few already said is to try to extract your data from the thingy, and wipe it out, if you wanna take a n00b advice, if you're close to the end of your warranty period, go ahead and unlock it then proceed to cromi-x it. i was of the same position as you back when i bought it, not interested in custom roms and whatnot, just root...... but since my warranty was expiring next month anyways, and it had grown considerably sloppy and laggy, i figured out, why not? and i gotta tell you, it was the right thing to do.

I wiped and downgraded to .8 and will happily stay there for now. Maybe until I unlock the bootloader in the future.

If you don't have it download Titanium Backup, hit Menu and wipe Dalvic cache. Reboot. The reboot will take a while because the Dalvic has to be rebuild - so don't panic
If that doesn't do it, I'm fresh out of ideas.

I tried to wipe via the stock recovery, but all the FC's was still there, and what's worse was that because of the FC's I couldn't finish (or quit) the "Set up your tablet" thingie. I always crashed on setting up a gmail account. Didn't matter if I was connected to the internet or not, or if I declined setting it up. So I had to do everything from the stock recovery.
Downloaded the .8 firwmare, unpacked the first .zip file, renamed the second .zip (to EP201_768_SDUPDATE.zip) and put it on an empty micro SD, made sure the SD-card was FAT32, booted to recovery (Power Vol down for 5 sec) and installed it via RCK, Android stock recovery.
Thanks for the tip, though. It might have worked. I don't know.

So I'm S-off, Firewater, SuperSU, CWM, stock software, I have not loaded a ROM, fastboot flashed the nohbootimg firmware update, added the HTC browser, and flashed the OTA-killer.
Can I do a Factory reset without it messing something up? I'm having 3 issues that I want to see if a reset will fix, one is my alarm clock keeps turning itself off, another issue is that when I turn the phone on it seems to take a long time to "Prepare Sim card" , and the last issue is that I get a email "login failed" notice which is poping up before the phone starts seeing the data connection.

If you are simply stock and rooted... you can factory reset using CWM without any issue.
Worst case scenario if you are backed up...

Since you have not installed a ROM I would think a factory reset would be a good first step. You will probably lose some if the customization you have done, but I wouldn't think you would lose root or anything like that. I believe a reset will just wipe the data partition ( maybe dakvik and cache as well).

Thanks! Just curious, I'm trying to learn as fast as I can , how does CWM reset differ from the the stock one?
And do you think that the CWM reset could help with the issues?

They both typically wipe the same partitions however the stock recover also resets some radio elements which is why you will always see me suggest to someone with radio issues to do a factory reset from stock recovery.

Well the alarm is staying on so far and I'm not getting the email login failure but I think I lost my CWM, guess I'd better reload it.

Interesting, I can't seem to get into my hboot mode? hmmmm
nevermind, I'm a dolt, forgot to turn off fast boot and I Still have CWM but when I select reboot I get a message "Root access possibly lost. Fix?" Anyone know what this could mean? Should I Pick "Yes - Fix Root" . I'd assume so, what the heck lets see what happens. lol
